Since it sits at the intersection of two major roads, getting in and out can be a bit challenging if you're going against the flow of traffic. Service - Every time I've visited, I've been in and out within minutes because the staff knows exactly what they're doing. As with any bakery, the selection becomes more limited later in the day. Flavor - I usually go with some type of pineapple bun, and I appreciate that it isn't overly sweet. If I had one suggestion, it would be a little more filling, such as taro. This is the best cake I've ever had in Portland, so much better than any other cake shop I've tried. It's a very down-to-earth little bakery, and you might never be drawn in by the storefront while passing by. I ordered a durian cake with extra durian, and I even got to choose the color of the frosting. My family couldn't help but laugh when they saw the vibrant colors I chose. It felt incredibly personal for a once a year occasion and it didn't look like one of those generic cakes you can get anywhere. The cake itself was scrumptious. Their english over the phone wasnt as good as in person, but they are very friendly and they love what they do! $45 for a durian 8 person cake and they finished in less than 2 hours on late notice. This bakery reminds me of the Asian bakeries I used to visit as a kid growing up in Los Angeles. American bakeries smell like sugar and butter. Asian bakeries have an added savory smell that brings back all kinds of feels. It's like that scene from Ratatouille when Anton Ego bites into a piece of his ratatouille dish and has a flashback of his childhood. That's how I feel when I bite into a pork bun or a custard bun from Mei Sum. We ordered several things to take back to Central Oregon where none of this emotionally goodness exists. The entire order that fit into a bakery box and two pastries that sat shotgun for the ride out cost less than $20. Definitely worth it! Came in the afternoon and there was some selection left. We got the egg tart, Taiwan pineapple bun, and the meat pie. It was only $5 for three items, so super affordable, and everything ended up being so delicious. The egg tart crust was super flaky and the meat pie had the same flakiness and tasted like a pork bun! This is the best Asian bakery I've found in the Portland area so far. I was hoping to find a bakery where I could find a few assorted rolls I like without breaking the bank (like the kind of place I could find in the Florin Pocket in Sac, or in Chinatown SF), and this was it. Since I arrived early, they didn't have everything out yet, but I was still able to order a corn bun, a green onion bun, and a curry beef puff. The curry beef puff was my favorite. I probably could have eaten five of them. The green onion bun was a little greasy, but the flavor made this forgivable. The corn bun was as good as the ones from my favorite Korean market back home. They had lots of other flavors I'd like to try in the future, like taro and pineapple. But I only ever get a few at a time, because they're so much better fresh than they are after sitting around a few days. These buns were everything I was looking for. This is a quaint Chinese bakery that has affordable and wide selection of funds and other tasty treats. Buns range from your standard pineapple bun with different fillings, coffee buns, savory buns like your classic char siu bao. In my opinion, a dozen of these buns are way better than a dozen of donuts any day. Would come in the morning because most of their buns will run out by around noon or 1 o'clock. They do have a minimum $10 charge if you are going to pay with a card but I promise you it's easy to blast through it with the amount of options. They have the one thing I do recommend is not ask to heat up the buns because they will just put it in a microwave. If you want them a little warm it's easier to put them in a toaster oven at 250° for a few minutes and they'll be nice and warm. I've bought a couple cakes from here before which are OK. They are your standard Asian style cakes with pandan, durian and others. Reasonable price but I don't go here for the cakes. The buns are so much better. Overall: very much worth it to go for the wide selection of buns. A more homey 85 degrees. I don't care for the cakes as much. read more

Very solid bakery. The egg tarts were by far the best. I could've eaten 30 of them. If you go here, definitely get some egg tarts. The pineapple bun was also very good as were the red bean buns. I thought the moon cake was okay, I probably wouldn't get it again but totally personal preference there. Service was great and very friendly! I stopped by around 11am on a weekday, worried they'd be low on stuff. Not so. Of course, I don't know what I may have missed but there was plenty to choose from! I got some old favorites that I knew I would like as well as some things that just looked good. I don't remember the exact numbers but I think I got 6 items for like $11. It was less than I expected! I enjoyed everything I got! I'm not an expert in Asian baked goods so you may be a harsher critic than I. This bakery is a classic bakery/coffee shop layout with a glass case of baked goods and counter. They serve a variety of baos with either sweet or savory filling. I especially enjoyed the flavor and texture of their baked coconut baos, however the filling was noticeably under-filled. They have stiff competition with better known bakeries nearby, and could improve their service. While I love Chinese bakeries and especially coconut baos, I don't plan on returning here. read more

I have a thing for baked Asian goods. It reminds me of my mom and all the delicious things she would bake-- hot dog buns, beef curry puffs, milk bread... Living across the country from her has made these goods less accessible, and I've been looking for something that could provide me piece of home away from home Mei Sum bakery is the bakery I didn't know I needed to try. I was here at the UPS store in the connected plaza on the far corner, decided to drive through the plaza to get to my next destination and saw Mei Sum Walking in, it's very unassuming. There's a small counter with a case of baked goods. I wasn't sure what to get because everything looked delicious. Hearing the orders of those ahead of me, I knew the BBQ pork bun was a must get. I ended up getting 4 BBQ pork buns, a fried dumpling (ham sui gok), and a cheese hot dog bun. Of note, there is a $10 minimum for credit card, if under the minimum you can still use it with a 50 cent up charge. Everything I got here was amazing. I love the flavorful BBQ pork filling, and I love the dough. The dough here has just the slightest sweetness to it and the perfect texture where it's soft without being soggy. Also, the BBQ pork buns here are massive! The hot dog bun and fried dumpling are also delicious as well. The dumpling is filled with BBQ pork....Yum! Oh, Mei! The savory and sweet buns are scrumptious! From the first bite of the scallion, bacon & cheese bun, I was craving another bite and instantly regretted not buying more. Now that I have experienced their deliciousness, it can never be erased from my memory and I will be going back to Mei Sum. Often. For those that have never been to a Cantonese bakery, give it a try! Unlike American donut shops filled with uber sweet doughnuts topped with super sweet icing and filled with and then topped with even more sugary stuff, the sweet buns and cakes here are on the low end of the sweet spectrum. They have a hint of sweetness and the buns are very light, airy, even sponge like. Which is what I prefer. When I visit a doughnut shop I get the unglazed plain, to give perspective. This tiny store contains a lot of goodness. Sample several, at $1.00-$1.50 a bun, getting 6, 8 or even a dozen to share is totally affordable. Heck, American doughnut shops charge $3-4 or more per doughnut! For the savory, definitely get the popular baked pork bun (Char Siu Bao) which I prefer over the more common steamed version. With its golden yellow exterior, soft bread like interior and sweet minced bbq port filling, I'd have 2 of these for lunch any day of the week! The real show stopper is the scallion, chopped bacon & cheese bun, with the delicious combination piled on top. I selected one and couldn't even wait to get home to eat it, devouring it in the car while driving home. Almost made a u-turn to go back, then realized I could go back anytime, so released the irrational "scallion bun shortage fear" and continued driving. The hot dog buns, with and without cheddar cheese, are wonderful. The delightfully sweet dough encasing the savory hot dog, were reminiscent of the classic hot dogs wrapped in Pillsbury crescents that I used to make for the Super Bowl parties and other gatherings. Soooo good! For sweet, I tried the pineapple bun which is appropriately named because of the crisis cross pattern on top. Inside was a light and delicious cream. Since it was my first time at Mei Sum, I wasn't sure of the process and communication as a bit challenging. When I selected a bun the woman put it in a tray, and I thought she was going to heat it up and I tried to explain I wanted to heat it at home. All this conversation was unnecessary as they don't heat them up! They put your selection on a tray so they can then determine how best to package. Bring cash. Or spend at least $10 since that is the minimum to use a card. Surprisingly, unless you are buying buns for a few people, it's challenging to hit the $10 minimum. When does that ever happen? My selection of 2 pork buns, 1 scallion, 1 hotdog and 1 pineapple bun came to $6.50. That's crazy good! Located in the Powell Street Station strip mall on the corner of SE Powell and 82nd (with the Winco) this unassuming bakery needs to be on your list. I'm doubtful that I could ever drive down SE 82 without stopping in for a bun or several. Impossible to resist. read more

If you read this review, My favorite bread that I didn't take a picture of was the Cake Roll! Pork Floss! I've been looking to try out pork floss and it was amazing! The pork floss bread had no filling but it was very soft, it would be nice to pair with other foods or make a torta (Mexican sandwich) with this bread!!! The service: it was okay, it's a mom and pop shop, there is a language barrier; you can say. Only 1 person at the counter, I say she tried to get everyone in and out :) I will say I learned how to say thank you in Cantonese. Thank you to the lady up front she told me there was sweet and savory breads. Nothing was too sweet, which is amazing!! Very small place! Stopped by here because I was craving for some Hum Bao and met these two sweet and nice ladies there. We ended up getting (6) Hum Baos, (1) curry pastries, (2) chicken pastries, (2) bbq pork pastries, (1) cream horn. The hum baos were perfect like always... wished there was a bit more filling but the bread was delicious on its own. The curry pastry is the best out of the 3 and I would definitely get more of those next time. Filling to dough ratio was perfect. The chicken one also had like sweet rice in it too.. wasn't a big fan. The bbq was good but I like the bbq pork buns better. read more

How lucky are we to have such a large Asian community in PDX with all of the food we'd only see on YouTube videos?! This bakery is amazing. Haven't had a sponge cake like theirs since my mom used to make her 7 layer cakes. Perfectly egg-y and fluffy, I ate myself sick... The filled pastries and buns are unique and delicious, sweet and savory, bbq or sweet cream cheese I wanted to try everything. Ended up with 6 different items and the total bill was $10.05! You would think people would come in to buy a few items, but it would seem that they get A LOT of items, which can hold up the line a bit. However, I don't blame the staff at Mei Sum Bakery. The items that they have on the daily is typically very tasty. I've been on the receiving end, so was the first time going into the bakery. I stopped into Mei Sum Bakery to pick up a birthday cake for my Mother-in-law's birthday. It was a Durian Birthday cake. I know...for some it can be off-putting, but it's VERY TASTY and well made. The staff at Mei Sum Bakery we're very nice to me, as I don't speak the same language, but they were quick to get the cake boxed up nicely. For many Asians, this is a good bakery to come to for their fix. So, if you are interested in trying out some delicious Asian buns and sweets, this is the place to try. The egg-y crust was packed tightly with scrumptious red bean fillings and it made the perfect snack for Autumn Festival. I walked into the bakery and looked at all of the delectable looking bread in the case. Immediately, I noticed how legit the bakery items looked and I instantly knew this place was legit and good. Of course, I had to get the pineapple bun. It was so soft and fluffy. It also had a pretty authentic flavor and texture. The pineapple bun was $1. You can't even find that price anywhere anymore! We also got the egg tart which looked flaky just like how an egg tart should be. I also saw some raisin bread and got a loaf for $2.50. I haven't really explored Chinese bakeries in the Portland area but I'm happy Mei Sum is here to satisfy my bakery needs! Not a negative reviewer, but this place is just bad. Service from the lady working was level 0. She just did not care one ounce and had such a rude attitude to her. Her tone, willingness to help, and approachability was just atrocious. She had her back turned to us the entire time we were browsing the case and shouted out if we want to get anything and when we replied, yes, she just ignored or acted like she didn't hear and carried about her business with her back turned. Made me not want to order anything from the bakery case at all, but decided to give the items a shot, why not. Disgustingly poor quality baked items. The almond cookie was just one giant dust crumble. No flavor and felt like I was just chomping on hard, expired/condensed dust. Didn't even want to finish it so I moved onto the next pastry which was supposed to be filled with cream, but they either skimped out or just flat out decided to create a dud because there was practically no filling at all, maybe a tiny dab or two. It was just tasteless bread that wasn't even enjoyable to the point where I couldn't even add my own peanut butter or something to it. Thinking third times the charm, but then thought about it again...I didn't even attempt to try the cornbread thing as it just couldn't be good. So three strikes and I was out. I will never return to this place again. The Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant next door is really good though. read more

Went here yesterday. Very small shop so only a few patrons fit at a time if everyone is practicing social distancing appropriately. But let's get to the snacks. This place is hands down one of my favorite bakeries. Everything is delicious. I especially enjoyed the rice ball this time. Not sure what's inside but the inside is dry and flaky and mixed with the glutinous rice ball surrounding it, it's a great textural mix. Everything here is on average about $1 - $1.50. Why haven't I been here sooner? This place is so great and their pastries are so affordable. I'm used to paying like $3-5 + dollars for my Asian goodies, but here they are all around $1. So clutch and incredible. I had the hotdog and cheddar bun and it was yummy. I would love if it was toasted there freshly, but all dreams can't come true. I'll bring my box home and do a few mins in the air fryer and boom, perfection. They also has an abundance of moon cakes which I was having a hard time finding for my dad. Great Chinese bakery! Everything is fresh, and regular-to-large sized. Most buns are $1-$1.30, so it's very easy on the wallet. Some of my favorites include the curry puff, which is filled with soft curry-seasoned ground beef. The puff pastry is a little sweet, which offers a nice balance of flavors. The char siu bun is large with a nice soft, slightly sweet dough. The pineapple custard bun is also yummy with a nice creamy texture to the custard filling. (FYI: the "pineapple" buns are not pineapple-flavored; it just refers to the appearance of the top of the bun) It's located in the same shopping center as Fred Meyer close to the 82nd side. Rating Mei Sum Bakery was easy. It was a piece of cake ... It's a bakery joke ... omfg guys ... whatevs ... your dad would LOVE this joke ... just roll with it, ok ... A slice of Sweet Cake was cute ... and a-ok ... meanwhile, a Red Bun Roll was also fairly average. Neither is a cake or roll I need again in my life, but I won't say no to either neither because I don't always make the best choices in life when I step into a bakery. Like, whenever I have to choose between Buns of Steel or Buns of Pineapple. Well, real buns aren't born, baby. They're bread. Bread with Cream. Bread with Red Bean. Bread with Pineapple. I said "YES" to all three Mei Sum Bakery buns. They were just alright, but life was better because it ain't no fun unless you've got buns, hun. To round out my Mei Sum selections, I added a sweetness-stuffed Cream Horn with Sugar and Sprinkles. The horn wasn't nearly as flaky or fresh as I like which meant the hole stuffed with cream was the only really awesome part ... proving that "the Hole was greater than the Mei Sum parts."
