I stopped by Ken's Artisan Bakery close to 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon so many products in the display case had already sold out. I ended up getting a walnut roll ($2.50) and a jambon-beurre ($7.00). Although there weren't any ham sandwich in the display case, the woman at the register informed us that they'd be able to make one for us on the spot. The walnut roll had been sitting around in the case all day so the outside had developed a hardened crust that was a bit difficult to chew through. That said, the inside had plenty of walnuts, great flavor, and would have been really nice toasted up in an oven. The jambon-beurre here is as good as it gets: high quality butter on artisanal bread, with a simple piece of ham on top. The pickled onions and pickles on the side were a nice touch as well. I wish more places would offer a jambon-beurre, but sourcing high-quality bread and butter is probably the biggest challenge for businesses. If you're here to get one item, I'd highly recommend either a baguette, or the jambon-beurre. read more

Easiest 5 star review! It's all about the goods, baked goods. Breads. Treats. Sammies. Coffee and all the drinks are fine but everything in display was made by hand with quality ingredients. People line up until it's gone. Some days we've waited thirty people deep but in this day it was about a dozen. Service is quick and although there is seating, it's often full. We always go with the intention of eating somewhere else. The jamon sandwich, French pastries and especially the perfectly crunchy carmelly palmier are my faves. The Annex next door has a paired down list of options that often keeps the line from getting too long at the main store. We love both. Stopped by Ken's Artisan Bakery before we hiked and went to the Japanese Tea Garden. We paid for street parking and walked over. The inside is cozy and I love that you can view the kitchen with the staff making all the baked goods! We got the chai latte, jambon sandwich, and the vegetable quiche. Prices were reasonable. Jambon sandwich 5/5 - tastes exactly like the one we had in Paris. Bread was crispy; butter, cheese and ham tasted good together. It was the best item we got here. Vegetable quiche 3/5 - it was really affordable at $6, however the taste was a bit disappointing. The salt was lacking so it didn't taste like much. Chai latte 3/5 - the drink wasn't that creamy and tasted more on the watery side. I wasn't too impressed with this drink. Overall, the jambon was the real winner. There is no designated parking for this bakery but there are 2 hour paid parking on the street and 4 hour paid parking on the other street. On a Saturday morning (Valentine's) there is a lot of foot traffic and activity in this store. By the time we left at 10:30 there was a line through the door. The amount of pastries offered gave me some choice paralysis but knowing that we were headed to another bakery after this, we settled for a Mango Escargot. This was our first time having escargot and according to the place card it's made using croissant dough. Since it has a layer of mango icing on top?, it wasn't crisp but it did have the airiness characteristics of a croissant. The mango tasted typical of mango flavored powder (used in some bubble tea drinks) so it was on the sweeter side. Love the ambiance and the selection here! This was our first time visiting Ken's. We sought out the best bakery spot in Portland and this was not it. And neither were the rude and snobby local patrons who pushed their way through the crowds. We ordered the quiche, strawberry peach danish, ham sandwich, chai latte, and coffee. What we got was a somewhat warm quiche, an apricot danish (i hate apricot but the line was too long so didn't want to correct the wrong danish), a decent ham sandwich heavy on thyme, luke warm coffee and flavorless cold chai latte. Many of the items were burnt, temperatures ranged between way too hot or barely warm. This place is riding on Ken's name and last success. There were sparks of "this could be really good" but they need work on their production and consistency. Bummer. read more

The pastries themselves were absolutely delicious. We had the morning bun, chocolate croissant, and ham-and-cheese croissant, and all of them were excellent. The drip coffee was great, and the latte was creamy while still having a strong coffee flavor. The downside was the cleanliness of the seating area. We sat at a table facing the display, and after we finished eating, I noticed spider webs all over the walls(as you can see in the pictures). It made me wonder how a place with such a big reputation allows the establishment to get to this point. Please clean the establishment more thoroughly. Ken's Bakery is clearly a neighborhood favorite as you'll see by the line out there door at basically any hour of the day, but especially in the mornings. Come early because they do run out of pastries. Everything I've ordered has tasted great. The croissants are especially good. Very flavorful and buttery. Lots of unique flavors too, and in the macarons as well. The space itself is small with almost no seating and it's too crammed to form an appropriate line. You have to balance on small steps at some point. Not ideal. I would normally give this bakery 4-5 stars, but I think they deserve only two stars for my personal experiences. The staff has never been all that friendly, and on my last visit (and last for a while or ever) one woman was so rude to me I was so shocked I just stood there with my jaw hanging open until I finally regained my wits and just stepped away. I don't even know what caused her attitude, I had ordered and paid, but she didn't like how I was waiting for my bag of food, I guess. I don't know. But I won't be going back anytime soon even if I lived in Portland. Bummer because it's very tasty. read more

Came here 45 minutes before closing and there wasn't much left, so I got three macarons (the only flavors they had left) and one apple tart for $17.25, what a deal! The staff were friendly and helpful. We Seattleites have been gaslighted so much in the Seattle bakery world, smh. The raspberry macaron was my favorite. It was a bit moist on the inside, and the best part was that it wasn't too sweet compared to the other two flavors. I liked the subtle sourness of it. The salted caramel one was rich! It tasted kind of like a decent tiramisu. Pumpkin spice was my least favorite, but note that I do have a relatively Asian palate when it comes to dessert. If you're a PSL fan, go for it. Pretty disappointed with this French-inspired bakery that was pretty popular for Portland tourists to try. I came in on an early Monday holiday and it was decently packed. The interior was standard with the displayed pastries up front. However, the lighting was a bit dim and depressing. Ther service was great though and the bakers explained the different pastries to us nicely. They even placed the pastries we ordered on plates and delivered them to our table. My friend and I ended up ordering the Oregon Croissant and the Strawberry Rhubarb Galette. Both of the pastries didn't seem fresh, they felt like they have been outside for a while. I also wish they were warmed. The Oregon Croissant was decent, it was not too sweet, but again I wish it was fresher. I wish it was buttery and flaky. For the galette, the berries in it were way too sour. It was not very pleasant eating it. The crust was also decent. Beyond the extensive bread list, one of his most popular sweet treats is the marionberry- and hazelnut-filled Oregon Croissant -- and I couldn't wait to give it a try. The bakery is located in Nob Hill, just north of West Burnside. The cream-and-golden sign pops against an otherwise plain, off-white storefront. Inside, the aqua walls and windows are a stark contrast to the adobe red bakery trim. The queue trails alongside the warmly lit bakery display. Behind the counter, countless baked treats sit on stainless-steel cooling racks and top-lit bakery shelves. Soft coffeehouse jazz plays around the room. My partner and I arrived specifically for Ken's special Oregon Croissant. Perhaps better described as a Danish than a croissant, the pastry wasn't markedly better than Costco brand, and the vaguely berry-flavored jam felt too skimpy. We also were enticed by the whimsical Tiramisu Macaron, which, in short, had too much going on; the espresso powder was too heavy-handed, and the cookie texture felt bogged down by the filling. Service was efficient, and our bill totalled nearly $10. After all of the hype, we were surprised to find Ken's baked treats so forgettable. While nothing was inherently wrong with the eats (they certainly are a step above Starbucks), nothing was particularly special about them, either. Kens is cute. I really liked the atmosphere of just a home town bakery and the wooden tables and open view of the baking area was nice. I love all the giant bread you can see for sale in the back. We got there early on a Saturday morning because places like this can get busy quickly and I'm pleased to say that the entire time we were there the line never got out of hand. Clearly this place is attuned not only to the baking but also the business and customer service. We tried a bunch of different things including the profiteroles, quiche, galette, and two tarts. The lemon tart was the favorite of everyone at the table and I added a picture of the tart display case becasue they all had edible flowers and were so cute! Amazing service and food to match! I ordered the Croque Madame and thought it was amazing. Perfect if you're especially hungry! It was a LOT of bread so i ate around it a bit and took off some of the cheese and ham and cheese alone, but it's definitely a hefty portion if you're having it with any accompaniments. The bread was delicious, don't get me wrong- only took a lot of it off because I had a pastry as well. My friend had the quiche and I thought it was delicious as well. It was vegetarian but somehow reminded me of the flavor in a chicken pot pie? Either way I was a fan of it, as was she. For pastries, I got the mini chocolate caramel croissant and thought it was the perfect flavor, texture, and amount of food. The croissant had the crispy outer layer and a rich, buttery, and soft inner layer. If you're getting something else or feeling peckish, I'd recommend this size over the standard size. My friend got the passion fruit swirl and although it was too tart for my liking, she was very happy with her choice. The coffees are great and we both opted for vanilla lattes because they make their vanilla in house- and you can tell. It's very good! Service is outstanding. The woman taking my order couldn't have been friendlier and let me pre order my lunch sandwich at 9:55 even though they are served after 10. The woman making the coffees heard me mention to my friend that i forgot to say iced when I was ordering the latte- and she kindly interrupted to tell me she can make it iced just in time! I don't usually leave negative reviews, but this experience was disappointing enough that I literally created a Yelp account just to post one. The bakery itself is cute, and the food LOOKS incredible. Unfortunately, the actual experience didn't come close to matching the presentation or the prices. Every employee we interacted with seemed openly annoyed that customers existed at all. Not a single smile, not a welcoming interaction, just scowls and curt responses throughout the visit. The moment that really summed it up was when I thanked the barista for my lukewarm, half-filled hot chocolate and got a flat "yeah" in response.
