Stopped by Ken's Artisan Bakery before we hiked and went to the Japanese Tea Garden. We paid for street parking and walked over. The inside is cozy and I love that you can view the kitchen with the staff making all the baked goods! We got the chai latte, jambon sandwich, and the vegetable quiche. Prices were reasonable. Jambon sandwich 5/5 - tastes exactly like the one we had in Paris. Bread was crispy; butter, cheese and ham tasted good together. It was the best item we got here. Vegetable quiche 3/5 - it was really affordable at $6, however the taste was a bit disappointing. The salt was lacking so it didn't taste like much. Chai latte 3/5 - the drink wasn't that creamy and tasted more on the watery side. I wasn't too impressed with this drink. Overall, the jambon was the real winner. The other items I got were disappointing, but I would come back to try more items.

There is no designated parking for this bakery but there are 2 hour paid parking on the street and 4 hour paid parking on the other street. On a Saturday morning (Valentine's) there is a lot of foot traffic and activity in this store. By the time we left at 10:30 there was a line through the door. The amount of pastries offered gave me some choice paralysis but knowing that we were headed to another bakery after this, we settled for a Mango Escargot. This was our first time having escargot and according to the place card it's made using croissant dough. Since it has a layer of mango icing on top?, it wasn't crisp but it did have the airiness characteristics of a croissant. The mango tasted typical of mango flavored powder (used in some bubble tea drinks) so it was on the sweeter side. Love the ambiance and the selection here! You can see the bakers in the back making fresh batches constantly and there were a couple of patrons who purchased baguettes.

Ken's is a popular local PDX bakery well known for their delicious baked goods. Definitely get here early before their selection is gone! To get here, street parking will be your best bet. Inside, they have a cozy setup with some tables for seating. Wifey and I ended up grabbing a Brownie and a Ham, Thyme & Gruyère Croissant. Both items were delicious! All of the staff are very friendly and welcoming here. There is a reason why this spot has over 1,000+ positive reviews!

Ken's artisan bakery was recommended by the hotel staff where I was staying. So I made it a point to go and check some of the places they recommended. This bakery was actually pretty busy inside. The pastries looked really good! The taste was amazing and yes I would say come to this spot. The macarons were delicious and so was the Oregon croissant.

Absolutely was dynamite , the dough was thin, crispy, flavor was definitely there. The pepperoni and sausage complimented each other very well & the salad was amazing, fresh & delightful. Btw I can tell they make their own croutons. Ugh!

Cute bakery with great quality pastries and sandwiches. It gets really busy in the mornings as this spot is quite popular so I'd recommend either going early or going late so that you can get seating indoors. Their pastry options seem to a bit different day to day. I really like their fruit tarts and their tuna salad sandwich.

Came here 45 minutes before closing and there wasn't much left, so I got three macarons (the only flavors they had left) and one apple tart for $17.25, what a deal! The staff were friendly and helpful. We Seattleites have been gaslighted so much in the Seattle bakery world, smh. The raspberry macaron was my favorite. It was a bit moist on the inside, and the best part was that it wasn't too sweet compared to the other two flavors. I liked the subtle sourness of it. The salted caramel one was rich! It tasted kind of like a decent tiramisu. Pumpkin spice was my least favorite, but note that I do have a relatively Asian palate when it comes to dessert. If you're a PSL fan, go for it. The apple tart was good too. After reheating it, the almond flakes were super fragrant and crunchy, and the crust itself had a strong creamy, milky flavor.

Order: 12 ounce vanilla latte, hot, and almond croissant. Pros: the vanilla latte is really really good. There's no need to add any additional sugar because it is made perfectly. The almond croissant is a little crunchy yet soft and flaky really good pairing. Service was nice and the ambience reminds me of being in a small little bakery. It was packed which signals how good it is or rather how good they are. Cons: no

This is one of my favorite bakeries in Portland! There is almost always a line out the door, for good reason, but it usually moves pretty quickly. All of their croissants and pastries are wonderful and today we tried the croque monsieur, which did not disappoint.

here we eat just to eat. put it in pill form and i would feel the same about the sandwiches. BUT the oregon croissant i loved enough to not wait for the rest of the table to get their food before eating and i promise you im a polite nice girl and i always wait. but again sweets are my weaknesses so is it really the oregon croissant or is it me?

Pretty disappointed with this French-inspired bakery that was pretty popular for Portland tourists to try. I came in on an early Monday holiday and it was decently packed. The interior was standard with the displayed pastries up front. However, the lighting was a bit dim and depressing. Ther service was great though and the bakers explained the different pastries to us nicely. They even placed the pastries we ordered on plates and delivered them to our table. My friend and I ended up ordering the Oregon Croissant and the Strawberry Rhubarb Galette. Both of the pastries didn't seem fresh, they felt like they have been outside for a while. I also wish they were warmed. The Oregon Croissant was decent, it was not too sweet, but again I wish it was fresher. I wish it was buttery and flaky. For the galette, the berries in it were way too sour. It was not very pleasant eating it. The crust was also decent. Overall, this place was a let down and I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but would eat the pastries if they were given to me.

Just coming here again to say that this is probably one of my top two favorite bakeries in Portland! My new favorites are the goat cheese and leek croissant and the regular butter croissant. And the MORNING BUN. Amazing. Go here. The line is worth it.

tl;dr the accolades and premium prices belie a mostly forgettable lineup of baked sweets The James Beard-nominated Ken Forkish is perhaps best known for his NYT best-seller baking guide, Flour Water Salt Yeast. But his longtime Portland bakery, Ken's Artisan Bakery, has purveyed baked goods since 2001. And, along the way, Ken's has garnered recognition as one of the best bakeries in America from outlets ranging from Food & Wine magazine to USA Today. Beyond the extensive bread list, one of his most popular sweet treats is the marionberry- and hazelnut-filled Oregon Croissant -- and I couldn't wait to give it a try. The bakery is located in Nob Hill, just north of West Burnside. The cream-and-golden sign pops against an otherwise plain, off-white storefront. Inside, the aqua walls and windows are a stark contrast to the adobe red bakery trim. The queue trails alongside the warmly lit bakery display. Behind the counter, countless baked treats sit on stainless-steel cooling racks and top-lit bakery shelves. Soft coffeehouse jazz plays around the room. My partner and I arrived specifically for Ken's special Oregon Croissant. Perhaps better described as a Danish than a croissant, the pastry wasn't markedly better than Costco brand, and the vaguely berry-flavored jam felt too skimpy. We also were enticed by the whimsical Tiramisu Macaron, which, in short, had too much going on; the espresso powder was too heavy-handed, and the cookie texture felt bogged down by the filling. Service was efficient, and our bill totalled nearly $10. After all of the hype, we were surprised to find Ken's baked treats so forgettable. While nothing was inherently wrong with the eats (they certainly are a step above Starbucks), nothing was particularly special about them, either. As such, I wouldn't advise anyone to spend $6 on the lackluster "croissant".

Can I get a gift certificate by text/email/any way not in person? I don't drive, but I have a scary appointment with Dever's Eye Clinic in mid January - they are not scary, I'm 72 and scared of glaucoma. I would love to treat my wife 34 yrs after?

Nothing on their website so I would call them but maybe during the week on an off time when they might not be so busy. They are usually very friendly so maybe will work something out with you.

Are there any sourdough items made with culture starter and long fermentation process instead of quick yeast?

I know they have sourdough items, but I'm not sure about all that as I've never asked but I recommend calling them or contacting them directly on their social media services.

Are there any gluten free options?

Yes, but I'm not sure which ones...

Still open for takeout?? The website says they're closed

    Yes wed-sun 8-3

New York and Chicago are still trying to catch up. But we are in the Pacific Northwest, nowhere near Loui's Pizza or Buddy's Pizza (Detroit pizza staples). So many times, what tries to pass off as "Detroit style" falls miles short. Then came "Ranch" where I stood outside and screwed up enough courage to try yet another Detroit style pizza. The interior was small, one wall lined with tomato sauce cans, the menu was bolted to a wall. The smell took me back and that gave me some hope. The pizza arrived at the table, the wife and I have varied tastes so we each ordered a quarter pizza. Mine was pepperoni, the wife had a veggie. The pizzas looked right, square, caramelized crispy edges, heavy toppings... and then on the side of the plate was this cup of ranch dressing. Duh! "Ranch" obviously has to have a good ranch, right? I dipped my pinky finger in the ranch and took a taste. You would not think one ranch can be so far ahead of the others, but ranch is the place for ranch, as well as pizza. My first bite brought a smile to my face, it was just, right in every way that a Detroit pie should be. I have been back to try their #4 pie with sausage and ricotta, and I am looking forward to more trips. Even better, prices are reasonable, and delivery is available. We had some delivered to our hotel, and it arrived almost as hot and tasty as we would have expected were we at a table near the ovens. I enjoy wood-fired pizza and don't mind a little char, but somehow this pizza tasted noticeably bitter despite having very little visible charring. Whether it was the lack of sauce, the sauce itself being quite bland, or simply an imbalance of flavors, the end result just wasn't pleasant. The biggest issue is the value. A $25 cheese pizza doesn't need to be life-changing, but it should at least taste better than Costco's. In this case, unfortunately, it didn't. The cheese and toppings tasted fresh, and I especially appreciated that they offer half slices, which made it easy for my husband and me to try a few different varieties without committing to full slices.
