    Halo Halo [$9]

Upon entering you can smell the sweet bake goods. The sumon was good. It's sticky rice and coconut milk mixed together. The halo halo was okay. The ube paste doesn't really go well as it was super thick and didn't mix well. Will come back again to try their empanadas.

It started out on a hunt for Halo Halo. It led my husband and I to this cute gem of Philippines bakery shop. We were visiting the nearby Art Museum and wanted a treat for Halo Halo in the abnormally cold Portland weather. My husband called the shop and ended up talking to the owner/baker. Just to let you guys know they are closed on Sunday. But the owner was so nice that he told us to stop by anyway. While being there we sampled their chicken and beef empanada, halo halo and chocolate mochi muffin. Empanandas are like small hand pies filled with different kinds of meats. I think they can be super delicious if we would have reheated in an oven. The halo halo (as we were told by the owner means mix mix) was good. The owner was super friendly and nice. He taught us that the way to enjoy a halo halo is to first eat the ice cream, then mix the filling and ice well before eating it. We have been doing all wrong for so long :-) The chocolate mochi muffin had an interesting texture. It was sprinkled with some taro powder on top. It was not too sweet and it was definitely unique. I highly recommend this bakery and would definitely go back again when they are open. Parking could be limited and you would need to pay for street parking around the shop.

Was exploring near the PSU campus and found this Filipino dessert bakery, and I'm glad I did! It's a small shop with no seating, so definitely just grab-and-go. They also had more than just desserts, such as adobo and empanadas if you wanted something savory. Honestly can't remember the exact name of the items I got, but one was an ube mochi chocolate bread and the other was similar to a cinnamon roll, but with ube mixed in and topped with a light frosting. Both were delicious - wasn't overly sweet or dense. The ube flavor really came through, and the mochi gave the bread a nice chewy texture. They had so many other items on their menu, but it seems like some things were currently sold out when we came by in the afternoon (there was a mango version of the cinnamon roll that I had wanted to try). Both the desserts I got were $3 each, and I thought they were well priced. The owner was super friendly and explained each dessert to us, and I would definitely come back to try their other items!

ube butter mochi and ube emsaymada

came here for my birthday cake (pleasant surprise) and it was an ube chiffon cake. Also dropped by their bakery section to try other goods. We got ube butter mochi and ube emsaymada (similar to cinnamon roll). Note: side street parking, cash is more preferred or else 4% credit card fee is using cards, and they also have some authentic filipino foods that is you can order and they cook it. We got only bakery goods today and we did go home to try the cake. Looks beautiful, it wasn't what i expected for flavor though. The cake to cream ratio is more cream than the cake itself. It is very beautiful and cake is well made, i just personally preferred more cake. Luckily it wasn't too sweet otherwise the flavor would not have matched the appearance of the cake. Others also thought there was too much cream frosting layers for a chiffon cake. This was disappointing unfortunately. 10/10 recommend their ube emsaymada- from what i asked the staff there, it is brioche bread with ube inside made similar to how cinnamon rolls are. sooo good!!! Ube butter mochi, wow sooooo chewy and moderately sweet with a lot of ube fragrance. If you've ever tried this from Hawaii, you would think this was from there. This bakery did an excellent job with these bakery goods and this earned them a star back!

This is a Filipino bakery, with their specialty being their ube ensaymada. As there were 4 of us, we decided to get one of each of the 4 types of ensaymadas - cheese, mango, ube, and original. The cheese ensaymada has a hint of sweetness with a little bit of cheese flavor. The mango ensaymada has subtle mango flavor with some sweetness on top. The ube ensaymada has ube crumbles on top and also some ube filling scattered inside the ensaymada. The original ensaymada has sprinkled sugar. The only ensaymada that I enjoyed was the ube as there is more even distribution of flavor and is softer. The other 3 did not have filling inside so it felt a little bit dry, and it was a little bit stale, so that was a slight miss. However, for $3 per ensaymada, the portions are good for the price.

A cozy little bakery off the highway. They had a couple of things on display earlier in the day: Ensaymadas, Ube Butter Mochi Cake, Sans Rival, and Pinoy Burrito. Seems like there were more being baked during that time so there might be more options later in the day. I got a box of each to sample everything and it's great! Super affordable too. The Ube Butter Mochi Cake stood out, chewy but soft at the same time. A very unique item. The Sans Rival was also like nothing I've had before, love the creamy cashew flavor. Burrito was filled with chinese sausage, white rice, eggs, and cheese. Again, pretty novel. Would go back to try other things and support a small local business!

It's the first time I've had Filipino food in Portland and I'm glad I was able to grab lunch here. I ordered the chicken adobo with came with a side of rice. Fair warning, call ahead for your order and ask what they have available because their entire menu may not be available for service. Pay with cash or there will be a 4% fee for credit cards. There's also very very limited street parking available. The chicken adobo was good and flavorful. The chicken was fall of the bone and very tender. The chicken adobo I've had before usually has a strong vinegar taste with it, but this one is on the lighter side. To finish the meal, I also got one of their pastries they had, the Ube butter mochi which was delicious. They have so many pastries available, can't wait to try more!

I've probably driven by this bakery hundreds of times before I realized what it was. And ever since I discovered it, I will usually make a stop! Their ensaymadas and Spanish bread are delicious, and definitely get the pandesal. If you've had pandesal at local Asian markets or events, it likely came from St Barbra Pinoy Bakery. They also have hot dishes that you can call ahead and order, such as adobo and pancit. Depending on what they have left, they also have hot dishes like Filipino breakfast burritos and empanadas in the case ready to buy. They're super nice here, and they make everything fresh. I can't wait to go back and try their other pastries! It's located on a very busy southbound through-street that connects SW Barbur Blvd and downtown Portland. There's street parking out front.

We were so excited to try this place after we saw the Korean Mama on Instagram try it out. We wanted to get the Ube cheesecake and the beef empanada. The cheesecake was probably the best cheesecake we've ever had! Ube works amazing in this dessert and they made it so well! Unfortunately, we took off a star because our empanada was mostly dough and not much filling, this was disappointing because we had heard so many good things about them, from reviews and the Korean Mama video. Maybe it was just an off day. The Ube cheesecake was 11/10 though!

I learned about this bakery from a friend and anything Filipino I'm down for! While in Portland, my friend and I drove to St. Barbra Pinoy Bakery and though they had a lot of different breads that were ready for take-out, I wasn't a fan of my halo-halo nor was the puto anything worth making a trek here for. When we first drove here, we realized that parking is kind of a bitch around this area. We attempted to park in the lot right across from the bakery until we saw that a car had its windows smashed and stuff was clearly taken out of the car. Sooo, that was scary. There is street parking right outside of the shop, but not a lot of it. We ended up parking on another side street, hoping no one would break into my car. (Fortunately, no one did.) The bakery is take-out only, as it's very small inside for where customers enter and order. They had racks of different breads that you could take, as well as some cases of other items, like puto and a menu with some savory food items, like adobo. My friend and I ordered puto and halo-halo. The halo-halo was super icy. There was hardly any condensed milk in it, which was unfortunate, since the milk would've helped liquify the ice. But no, the ice stayed intact since there was hardly any liquid to help melt it. It did come with a large scoop of ube ice cream on top, which was the best part. But other than that, it's not like I could enjoy the halo-halo since it was mostly ice. The puto was better. It was soft and tasted fine. But nothing special. I didn't taste any coconut, which you normally get a hint of with puto. This was far from the best Filipino bakery I've visited, and sadly, I would not come back here. Perhaps there's better luck with the other food items, but can't say much for the halo-halo or puto.

    Beef empanadas - delicious!

Do they serve Puto here? It's the colorful dessert type thing with coconut dipping sauce.

Mmm I love puto. Unfortunately I did not see any while I was there last. I also asked if they had ukoy and they do not. Apparently the business has only been open for about a year and a half and they are working on expanding their menu.

Walking in less than an hour before closing, we were surprised to see most of the items still in stock! We ended up picking four things to try: Vanilla Bean Kouign Amann ($7) - This pasty has a sweet yet salty exterior that's complementary in flavor rather than clashing. It's accentuated with a crunchy glazed and caramelized sugar layer that's on the sweeter side. The interior is interesting. There's a cavernous gap right in the center that's filled with a sickly sweet melted sugar syrup. It's unpleasantly sweet and very cloying. The puffed and filled area is large enough that it compresses the other layers so the kouign amann is dense. I've never had a kouign amann quite this sweet before. (3/5) Meyer Lemon Olive Oil Cake with Thyme ($5.50) - This cake is so moist and rich, thick and dense, fatty and rich, that it feels like I"m eating a slab of butter. I'm sure it has just as many calories too! It's quite sweet, although not nearly to the level of the kouign amann. Overall, it's just a really rich and decadent cake. (4/5) Blueberry + Vanilla Cream Brioche Donut w/ Earl Grey ($6) - The top of the pastry is dressed with a cream that has an unmistakably strong bergomot earl grey taste. I wish there was way more cream - there's essentially only a dab on top! The rest of the donut is filled with a custardy light blueberry and vanilla jam. It's not too sweet and has an excellent high quality blueberry fragrance, creating an exceptionally strong blueberry taste. The jam is not too thick and is somewhat syrupy from sugar. The donut itself is really soft and extremely airy. It's the fluffiest donut I've eaten in a long time. (5/5) Raspberry Rose Cruffin ($8.50) - This pastry has some fun dehydrated raspberries sprinkled right on top of a light and fluffy cream that's not too sweet. The cruffin base is buttery in taste and great lamination even when filled with the custard and rose/raspberry cream. This is a heavy cruffin that's very filling. (5/5) Twisted Croissant certainly does some some really delectable treats. It's one of my favorite bakeries in Portland!
