My grandfather loves Meier's port wine, so my aunts and mom decided to surprise him with a trip to the winery, the oldest and largest wine producer in Ohio. I was thrilled to get to tag along ... except for one thing. I'm pregnant, which makes trips to wineries considerably less fun. So it was such a great surprise when the winery hostess at Meier told me they make juices and do juice tastings as well. At least I could participate in my own way. My grandfather, aunts and mom got two tastings each, which were $1 each. I smelled some of the wines they got (can't stop me from living vicariously through my nose, right?), and the tawny port and the spiced wine, which is served warm, smelled delectable. Meier specializes in sweet wines, much like other midwest wineries. For my sparkling juices, I got the Cold Duck (with a name like that, how could I not?!?) and Spumante. The Cold Duck is made with concord grapes, and the Spumante is made from Muscat grapes. Both were great, but like the description for the Spumante states, it is "practically identical to the alcoholic alternative." If you want to feel like you're drinking without, ya know, "drinking," this one is for you. I wish I would have grabbed a bottle when I was there. (And if you do decide to buy some bottles of juice or wine making supplies from their shop, be sure to check in via Yelp and use the $5 off $10+ purchase.) The interior of Meier is pretty dated, but again, it's the oldest winery in Ohio. It reminded me of my late great aunt's basement. There is a great outdoor area, though, and the shop is large and right next to the tasting room. If you want to eat while you're there, it is BYOF (bring your own food). You can buy cheese-and-cracker or chips-and-salsa plates or get some food delivered. If you like sweet wines with perhaps a bit of history, definitely give Meier's a try. read more

We stopped by Meier's late Friday afternoon as friend was celebrating her birthday and wanted to try their wines. We walked in were greeted right away by Stephanie, the store manager and made our way to the bar for tasting. They have large selection of wines, note mostly sweet with a few sparkling wines, which two are drier, for you to taste and each tasting is only $1 each. Lynn in the tasting room helped us with our selections as I'm mostly a drier wine drinker and my friend Tina will try anything. Tina tried a variety of fruit wines as well as sparkling. I stayed with 2 drier white wines, Walleye White and Meier's Sauterne and their 3 Reiem Sparkling wines, Extra Dry, Brut and Spumante. I felt the Extra Dry was the best. I also tried another sample adding one of the fruit wines per Lynn's suggestion, I selected Raspberry to the sparkling, getting as close as I could to a Kir Royale. The gift shop has all of the wines for you to purchase as well as a variety of wine themed gifts for you to take home. They also let you purchase a bottle open it to enjoy in the cellar and will cork it for you to take back home to finish, which Tina purchased a bottle of Spumante to take home and enjoy for mimosas the next day and you can bring food in from outside to enjoy with the wine, if you like. In the summer they have outside deck to enjoy, I would return on a warm summer day to enjoy one of the sweeter wines. Having just experienced a very cool event at Meier's (Yoga and Mimosa Saturdays!), I wanted give them a shout out and write a little review. I learned so much! It's has a pretty interesting history. For example, they were able to continue doing business during prohibition because they make juices and because, and this is pretty great, they made wine for communion and medicinal purposes. It's got underground cellars that are massive. It has a very cool patio area (where we did yoga). So, I can't wait to go back for the yoga and also for their other events. I have lived here for 11 years now and I have heard of Meier's Wine Cellars, but I have never been here before. They have wine tastings, a great selection of their own wines and a few others, they have t-shirts and other wine items as well. This is very much a sweet wine location and if you take the look of just the outside you probably would never even come in. I would recommend stopping in they are very inviting and have a great selection of wines to sample and buy on site. read more

Meier's wines looked promising but didn't deliver for me. After checking out nearby businesses I saw the sign for wine and was so excited to go in and grab a glass. Perhaps, if I enjoyed it buy a a couple of bottles. After walking in I noticed the this place is beyond dated. And looked like this would have been a great hang out decades ago. They did have some kitschy signs that were pretty amusing. Also, to note that if you are a wine maker this might be a place for you; as they had what I can only assume are items to make your own wine. I walked around for a bit and decided on a tasting of 3 wines. I got their sparkling wine, Riesling, their red wine. The sparkling wine was flat and the only 2 were very underwhelming and tasted like the bottles have been open for a while. If you're a fan of sweet wines, Meier's is your Mecca. If you prefer yours dry, look elsewhere. Meier's Winery is Ohio's oldest wine producer, starting back in the late 1800s. The Meier family grew grapes on the land where the Kenwood Towne Center sits today. During Prohibition, the winery began selling sparkling juice, then began wine production again in 1933. With it's roots in the juice business, it's no surprise that Meier's wines are of the sweeter variety. Today, they still sell over a dozen kinds of sparkling juice in addition to their alcohol. The inside of the Meier Wine Cellar reminded me like a German beer hall: long wooden tables, lots of large log-style support beams. Only difference is that the woods were a dark brown color rather than traditional tan, which adds to the ambiance of the room. The rest of the building is a giant open store, with bottles stacked and organized. Outside, you'll notice rows of gigantic silver silos, where all the wine is created. I've got a palate for fruity tastes and always head straight to the dessert wines in a liquor store. Meier's bottles dozens of kind of sweet wines including imports from Germany. Cindy greeted me at the door and told me all about their wines. At the front counter, there is a sheet with the name, genre, and taste description of each wine Meier's sells. This is wonderful for helping people find exactly what they need. After contemplating a few flavors, Cindy invited me to have some samples at the bar. The German white wines were my favorite, as well as the Haut Sauternes; Meier's semi-sweet white. I asked Cindy what her favorite item in the store was. She presented a bottle of Spumante Champagne, which was crisp and bubbly. I also sampled the signature Ice Wine, which tastes like a sweet mead. It comes in a small, slender bottle and costs $30.00, but if you're looking for a dessert wine to impress, this is it. White wines are the strong suit of Meier's. I tasted a few reds and was turned off by each. The best-selling Porter reminded me of the marinade for an Italian veal dish; not something I'd like to drink a glass of. The award-winning House Red tasted like cherry cough syrup. Stick with the white wines and you'll be happy. Since everything is brewed and bottled on the Meier property, they keep costs low. Bottles average between $5.99 - $7.99, which allows customers to splurge on two bottles for the price of one at a liquor store. What a deal! As I checked out, Cindy bagged my purchases in a reusable wine bag which has dividers for six bottles of wine. It's a perfect caddy for the wine tasting party I'm attending! The wine here is VERY sweet, which I love but might not be everyone's cup of tea. The tasting was very enjoyable, definitely sit out on the patio. Staff was attentive and all wine was labeled which was fun. Cheese platter was average, just cheddar and Colby jack. Had a very nice experience here. read more

I'd rather drink Sutter Home, than drink their wine. Wanted to try this place twice before I gave a fair review. I got the red table wine which had an acidity taste. The second time i came back, thought I would try the sweeter wines. Taste like cough syrup. The staff was friendly but will not makeup the bad quality of their wines. read more

I noticed this place one day when I was visiting the Scratching Post cat shelter across the street and I thought to myself, 'yeah, I think combining wine with my love of rescue kitties is a good idea.' So naturally, I had to make plans to come back and check it out. My partner and I picked a day for the visit, and he kindly suggested that we visit the kitties first (he pretended it was because he was afraid I'd drunkenly adopt... but he's as weak to fluffy faces as I am, so...). We did, and then we moved the car across the street and headed in. From the outside, this place is not all that impressive looking. If there weren't signs for a tasting room, I'd have wondered if we were in the right place. But inside the old building is a large bar/tasting room, and a store filled with wine, so I was happy. Let me tell you - they offer a lot of wines. And one tasting includes a taste of ten of them. We played it safe and only did one tasting between the two of us (for driving related reasons, I was given to understand) and that was plenty. It was fun looking over the list and narrowing down what we wanted to try. The wines varied by quality, of course. Some were very good, some were indifferent. I was impressed with an imported white from Germany in particular. The dessert wines, not usually my cup of tea, were quite good. Or at least they didn't make me pucker up and shake my head in denial, so that's a good sign. The staff was friendly and helpful, the tasting room cozy. The shop had a wide variety to take home. Overall, a fun experience and I would absolutely go back, but I wasn't blown away by the wines or the ambience... and it was a bit of a drive from where I live, so it won't be a regular wine drinking rotation stop. read more

Took my fiancee here on a wine tasting on Wednesday. Charming place with delicious wine. The staff was prompt, kind, and attentive. The sherry#44 was especially delicious (the recently received a gold medal for it). Their gift shop is full of wine themed knick-knacks. Only drawbacks are that they close at 5pm and are not open on Sundays. read more

I had never heard of Meier's until a co-worker invited us out to hear her sing. Upon arrival I was a little unsure that this was the place I was meant to be- it looked a little too industrial. But once I got inside it was easy to tell I was in the right place. To be fair, I spent most of my time sipping wine slushies out on the patio (which is nice!), so I didn't get to spend a lot of time exploring. The wine slushy was delicious! Because it is a winery, there was a bit of a stinky smell outside as they were fermenting things. I'd definitely be up for going back and would reccommend checking it out at least once! read more

I bought the Meier Red Seedling wine from Meijer's grocery store in Columbus, Ohio. The wine is sweet and absolutely delicious! My only problem with it is that it contains high fructose corn syrup. Evidently most, if not all, sweet wines contain HFC. I only found one wine in the sweet section of the store that actually listed ingredients. None of the others listed ingredients. If I can find a sweet wine that contains real cane sugar, I will buy it. Until then, no more sweet wine for me! In the meantime, I'm going to have to dump the remainder of this yummy wine down the drain. read more

A quiet place - the girl working mentioned that sometimes it feels like "people don't know we're here". The store was pretty large, with lots of different wines and juices. They were all pretty cheap, also. I think since they lean toward the (much) sweeter side, if you really enjoy wine, this might not be the place for you. read more
