While I enjoy this store overall, this particular review pertains to the bakery specifically. I have bought many birthday cakes in my day, ranging from a special ordered one from a boutique bakery to everyday grocery store-bought to Mexican bakeries. Today was my daughter's sixth birthday party and there was a lot of planning put into it, yet somehow I had completely forgotten to order the darn cake. So last night we went on a mad hunt for a cake, trying to figure out something. In a last-ditch effort we stopped at the bakery at Meijer and asked if, out of the kindness in their hearts, we could place an order. The lady behind the counter informed us that the cake decorators had gone home but she asked another bakery associate if it was okay. She told us that usually they need 24 hours but they would make it work. I ordered a basic marble sheet cake with chocolate frosting. On the order form I added that if they wanted they could decorate as they liked, to get creative, and gave a basic idea of our theme and colors. I honestly wasn't expecting much, figuring they would have to fit it into the schedule. What I got was simply outstanding. The cake was gorgeous and tasted great to top it off! I wish I could've thanked the person myself but I wasn't the one that picked it up. I highly recommend this bakery and wouldn't hesitate to go back. read more

Went to Wal-Mart in Johnsburg on September 15, 2017 at around noon to pick up an xBox game that came out on this date (at midnight) so I was assuming the shelves would be stocked and ready to sell. Nope! I asked if they had the game and the service rep said yes, but they are in the back, we haven't stocked them yet (with no offer to get one), then walked away. Since Meijer is nearby I headed over there to see if I would have better luck. As luck would have it, Meijer did not have time to stock the shelves of this new release game either but they were far more eager to make a sale so they offered to go in the back and get one if I didn't mind waiting. 5 minutes later they had the game ready for purchase and I was out the door. So, lesson learned. Some stores hire better customer service representatives that are actually there to HELP the customers and some stores hire people that cannot be bothered. In the defense of each individual, it is very possible Wal-Mart doesn't treat their employees well and that could be the reason they respond in this manner but I've never worked there so I cannot say this is a fact. This place is GREAT! The produce selection here is better than anyplace else that I have ever shopped. Also, the staff are friendly, the prices are better than Wal-Mart, and the lines are shorter. I can't figure out why Meijer isn't a nationwide chain. If all the stores are even half as good as this one, it's like shopping at Wal-mart but cheaper, with better products and selection, and without the guilt that come from giving Wal-mart money and, by proxy, making the world a worse place. read more

The only reason they are not getting the 4 stars they deserve is because of the lack of knowledge and customer service in their pharmacy! On 3 separate occasions we have tried to fill 3 different prescriptions and none were filled successfully nor filled at ALL! They continuously have excuses why they can't fill our scripts, after waiting hours we were finally told the script was out of stock. Then it was an insurance issue (per their pharmacist) insurance companies aren't 'open' on Sunday's. Apparently they do not have Internet access such as Walgreens or CVS. Please, if you need a prescription filled ASAP, go down the street to the Walgreens on 31 & 120 or even the Jewel-Osco on 120. I bet Walmart near Johnsburg is quicker too! read more

My family just ate the best tenderloin steak from the meat dept. This is the 2nd batch we had that was great. I have not bought beef very much in the last 10yrs due to the poor quality, but now I am hooked.. read more

This Meijer is OK- good selection and Walmart-esqe. However, despite the previous posters review, Meijers prices are NOT better then Walmart. That's just a fact- compare for yourself. Also, while the produce section may be adequate, DONT even consider buying the raw chicken breasts. Every single time I had in the past, the smell was somethingI can't even type hear, and I will NEVER do it again... not quite sure what that's all about. Just bought a video game there last night as well, got home- and it was not in there! Lol. So what have we learned? Meijer is fine, if you aren't buying video games or raw chicken. read more

When Meijer first came to McHenry, it WAS pretty good. Now it's not so great. Produce isn't good quality, you can find moldy or old produce on the shelves. Seems like no one is in that dept, and if there is, they're just stockers. Bathrooms are always nasty. The hot foods in the deli area has gotten me sick several times. Cashier operated registers open is usually around 2 on weeknights and a few more on weekends. Prices aren't that great either. MPerks is stupid too. read more

Visited today for supplies. Trash everywhere between the two entrances. Paper, garage, debris, it just looked like a garbage truck dumped in the front of the story. Very disgusting. Mentioned the situation to two Meijer employees but when I left the store NO ONE was outside cleaning up the mess. What a bad reflection on Meijer McHenry. Makes it look like businesses don't care about the community only profits. McHenry is just not a very pretty city. read more

Though I love the selection and it's a one-stop-shop kind of place, the checkout lines are mind numbing long. It truly doesn't matter what time of day you go, the lines are slow and long. I know they are trying to keep people with 100 items out of the 12 items of less line but I've seen plenty abusing that lane and it drives me crazy when I only have 5 items. We don't have a lot of close options in Lakemoor (Meijer and Jewel). I may need to drive further but I guess, grocery stores will always have lines. I don't think there is a win situation in our area. read more

Meijer's is ok....really. It's nicer than a Wal-Mart supercenter and the prices are reasonable enough. Large selection and hey, they have ice wine! Bonus! The one down side is that they charge you almost $3 for a pineapple!!! Back home...I pay 49 cents. read more

DO NOT PLACE AN ONLINE ORDER AT THIS STORE!!! I placed an order on 3/31 that was supposed to be delivered on 4/1. At the time I placed the order ALL items were in stock. So, it's now 4/3, I received NO notification my order was finally being picked. Luckily, my bank let me know money was charged to my account!! Not even half of my order is available at this time. I refused delivery and the Shipt employee couldn't guarantee I would receive a refund. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Plus, my credit card was suspended due to too many improper attempts to charge items!!! So, I'm on hold for the 3rd time trying to speak to an actual person to get my money back. Yeah, no dice, continuous loop on voicemail and getting sent to the wrong department. I understand this is a difficult time for all of us but my husband has Parkinson's and I have COPD so we shouldn't be in the stores. Online orders are the only way we have to receive necessary food items. But I'm most upset about the nasty attitude of the employee of Shipt that didn't fulfill her job requirements and don't even try to contact them. They stink!! In the future I will no longer shop at Meijer because their lack of concern for customers is obvious due to not taking care of customers properly. I was also told there was no Manager on duty, I call BS on this!!! So to Meijer, Bye Felicia!!! Walmart is right down the street and so is Jewel, Woodman's isn't far also. read more

We love Meijer in this household. The produce selection is vast, prices are competitive and generally always looks really fresh. Also, if you have questions I have never had a problem asking any of the employees - they have always been helpful. The prices are competitive - many are better then other stores, you just have to know your prices. The mPerks program is fantastic - I love being able to save an extra 5% just beacuse, there is nothing special other than signing up you have to do to get the extra money. The employees are friendly and the prices are fantastic. I recommend Meijer over most all other local grocery stores. read more

Terrible customer service and policies. I returned some items today with gift receipts from Christmas. Things have been hectic for mW and I was unable to get to a meijer before today. (I don't live close by to one) Their 90 day return policy is inflexible and because they items were purchased 2 DAYS before the 90 day mark a credit that should've been $46 plus tax became $21. I WILL NEVER BUY GIFTS OR SHOP AT THIS STORE AGAIN. There are NO managers on duty to even discuss with! How can a store like this run without any type of manager on duty?!?! I'm not buying that!! BTW...it has NOT been 90 days since Christmas... If you expect people to want to use your store for holiday shopping you may want to permit times purchased after black Friday through December have an extended period for return. Many other places would've made exception because it was Christmas gifts. One item she only offered me $3 for! Forget that! I'd rather donate it to the needy than help them make a buck off another innocent shopper. I will not go back! read more

Overall, this store has some good prices, however, it can use a good cleaning. It has recently remodeled the apparel dept. if anyone really wants to shop there for clothing and the bakery dept has recently evolved into a decent bakery. But, the store should be cleaner, the floors waxed and the seafood dept deorderized. The deli dept limited and the deli associates less than helpful. The pharmacy, in general, if you are dropping off a prescription, you will get some assistance...If you need help finding something in the drug dept OTC...Good Luck. The associates behind the pharmacy window are totally non helpful or ever come out from behind their glass enclosed cages.....or call for any assistance for you....you need to wander the aisles alone in hopes of finding what you need....btw, that entire drug dept is disorganized. The check out lines are long as they cut back on their employees so waiting in line can be a frustrating 20 min experience while so many lanes remain closed. The self check out is a complete waste of time and should be eliminated altogether. Why would anyone want to spend time grocery shopping, adding items to their cart, then expect to Self Check Out themselves???? The express lane is rarely open making people check out themselves cause they have little choice.....then employees need to come over for assistance, coupons, etc.....this does not save time......it only adds more frustration for shoppers. ive shopped Meijer for years now; at first, it was just a Jewel alternative for some things.......now, i never shop at Jewel; I find Meijer's selection of organic foods in both fresh and otherwise to be growing. I just wish they'd stock their shelves better, at least for some of the things i look for. I think their produce department has improved alot!!!! and their organics in the produce department is also growing. There are a few things i cant find at Meijer and i do shop elsewhere, but generally speaking i like Meijer and they are open 24 hours i just found out! Its my go-to place for everyday shopping. PLUS now they are carrying chicken, whole and parts, that are air-dried, and a free-range organic!!!!! Keep up the work Meijer; it seems they do listen to what their customers want and what the trend is towards fresh food read more

This is a very good Meijer, but the one in Round Lake that just opened up is horrible. The McHenry Meijer has WAY friendlier and nicer and better Customer Service and I actually recommend the McHenry location. This is an Honest location. read more
