I have had food from all over the world and my mom is Costa Rican, so imagine my surprise when they advertise Mofongo. A delicious dish that I had never even heard of let alone tried. It was worth the wait and what a wait. About 25 minutes to place your order and then 45 minutes to get your order. I was so confused as to what is going on here. We're in a line to order food but there is a separate line for the baker items and after we order and are told to go sit, there is a third line: for the lunch buffet. They charge by the pound at the buffet. After 45 minutes, they called my name and I went up to get my wife's Mofongo and my breakfast special. My breakfast was so delicious. the bread was awesome, it tasted like Hawaiian bread. Eggs, ham all on top of plantains. For like $6. The coffee is NOT a drip but an expresso turned into an Americano. I ordered the media noche sandwhich and thought it was ok. Also tried a couple of pastelillos, a pizza and chicken and were good. Typically the tripleta is something I order at every Puerto Rican sub establishment. I was excited knowing that this is not a chain and locally owned. We had to wait a bit for the order as well, so I figured it would be hot and/or fresh. We had ordered three subs, only one of them was hot. The meat in the tripleta was thick and a bit tough to chew through. I couldn't taste anything other than the pernil and tomato. The medianoche was the only hot sub where we could properly taste all the ingredients on. We ended up getting an Oreo cheesecake as well, but it tasted like something was off about the whipped cream. Haven't visited Melao in a long time and decided to go for breakfast. When we first arrived it wasn't too busy and shortly after got very busy. I like that you can order at the counter or at a kiosk. But the initial thought as you walk in is the old and outdated. Definitely needs some renovations to the location. As for staff the interaction with the lady at register taking orders was good but the lady at the pick up counter, Ileana, was very rude. She was yelling at everyone including customers. As for food it was good but I've had better. The major disappointment was I ordered a quesito and it was cold as if they just took it out of the refrigerator so it was horrible. I should've gone back to return it but it was busy so just took it home and warmed it up. Also the toast with butter barely had any butter making super dry and hard to eat. This bakery is very Puerto Rican bakery, and while I don't visit often due to mixed reviews, this was only my second time coming back, and unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. The positives: the food options are fantastic, and the pastries are excellent. I tried some of the lunch offerings this time, and everything I ate was truly delicious. The owners clearly have a great product. Where things really fell short, though, was in the service. If you're running a business with the values and principles you advertise, your staff should reflect that. The lady that served us was wonderful, attentive and friendly. However, another employee (Irish, I believe was her name) was the opposite experience. She seemed far more interested in chatting with a coworker than serving customers. At one point, she called out "NEXT!" and when the young woman behind us didn't react within two seconds, she abruptly said "OK!" turned her back, and went right back to her conversation. I had to step in and point out the customer she left waiting at the register. Even then, she barely acknowledged her, clearly annoyed that she had to stop talking (Second lady talking to her was Maritza). Again, this lady had a terrible attitude. Meanwhile, other team members were hustling , but it was frustrating to watch these two stand around talking instead of helping. As a customer, this left a really negative impression. I may give this place another try in the future, but it's been 4-5 years since my last visit for a reason. Most of the dishes all look delicious including their prepared meals which you can get a take home full meal. Busiest times seem to after 12noon, but the service was quick. We each had also a shake of passion fruit which was amazing, but next time I would like to try their nutella coffee sounds like heaven. Breakfast is also served in addition to lunch both range in prices between 8.99 to 22.00 with 22.00 being a full meal. The place is pretty big for seating enough people without feeling overwhelmed. Why oh why did I not know about this place year's ago?! I needed this in my life 10 years ago! When i went it was packed! I realized that it wasn't just a bakery when i forst parked my car. So I decided that since i was there for doughnuts i would just buy a few. And come back with my husband to try the food. Their doughnuts they sell here are sinfully delicious! The pillowy soft texture when you bite into these are the perfect dessert and will make your day. They have a variety and so far all the ones I've tried are amazing! Creme filled one, chocolate covered ones, glazed, chocolate vanilla, dulce de leche etc.... These donuts are not normal size either they are pretty big! I couldn't finish either of the ones I've started after buying them. I ended up finishing the rest of of it later on in the day or the next day. This place is a must in my life! They have 2 options, premade dishes and a la carte; we chose a la carte. Such simple dishes full of flavor, everything was delicious. Today I had a great experience trying out traditional Puerto Rican food in Orlando that made me regret not getting in touch with my roots sooner.
