Was in a jam after an intense workout and usually skip on sandwiches due to a food/gluten allergy. But one of my favorite culinary cultures came to the rescue with a twist on good old "meat and potatoes." The Boriquan platter was a surprise hit in my book. The beef was braised to be like pot roast and had a nice mix of aromatics (garlic and onion being dominant). The fries were skin on, golden and perfectly seasoned. As an oddity, the salad was fresh and had a delicious chimichurri dressing that I ate with each bite of steak. The sandwiches are legendary, but there is more going on under the hood. I stopped by the Florida Mall location of Meson Sandwiches on Saturday, December 31, 2022. The Puerto Rican based chain has four locations in the Orlando area as of December, 2022. The locations are currently the only restaurants the fast-casual chain has outside of Puerto Rico. I opted for a Combination Meal which included one of their Signature Sandwiches, the Montecristo, along with French Fries and a Bottled Water. Unlike the traditional Monte Cristo sandwich which is an egg-dipped or batter-dipped ham and cheese sandwich which is either pan-fried or deep-fried, their variation included Turkey, Virginia Ham, Swiss Cheese, Lettuce and Mayonnaise on Toasted Criollo Bread. I thought the sandwich was good but, not anything that gave me a reason to choose this menu item again in the future. Likewise, the French Fries were OK as a complement to the sandwich but, again nothing special in terms of taste. I found the cashier and the other employees friendly even though the location had a steady stream of customers during the lunch hour. That being said, as a heads-up there may be a wait to receive your food as the location seems to be short-staffed, which is a problem for many restaurants at this time. read more

Yo soy hungry. Necesito food. I was in the mall and I was hungry. I didn't want to wait in line. Everyplace had a line. So had a few friends go one way I went the other and looked for something that wasn't "regular" mall food. I snap up the mall and this place and a friend from St. Croix tells, "aww man get a Coquito Latte for me" :-D I was ready! I enter that LONG AF line just to learn most people were waiting on food!? Those confused faces that I thought were undecided on what they want - were actually frustrated about the wait. A few friends get out of line and go to some other places. I still wait my turn. Get to the front to order and assistant holds back and laugh when she hears me say ask about coquito. They don't offer that! :-( Vegetarian sandwiches normally look pretty dry and super basic at the mall. That's what I would have said UNTIL I had soy salami for the first time. It tasted so good it made me wantto have meat.So if I've been pranked into eating real meat - never tell me! Tastiest veggie sandwich I've ever gotten. And to complete my meal - quesito. I only got one :-( I LOVE QUESITOS! So while I'm at the table snapping and eatting my friends were still in line. They see my food :-) They eat their common mall food and are still hungry. OK, so here's my first impression of Meson. Super super busy - had to wait a bit, but not super long! Definitely the busiest place in the food court at 12pm on a Friday. The cashier was rude rude rude. I could barely hear her because of the blasting techno music in the food court and she seemed annoyed by that fact. The lady that served my food was also kinda rude. I asked her for some extra ketchup for my fries and she said she had already put some in the bag, which I found out was two packets. The food itself was very average for the price. My combo came out to $11.84 and included fries and a drink. The sandwich was good, but nothing that I would seek out. I have had better Cuban sandwiches at smaller mom and pop places. So it was odd to order a Cuban and have to ask for those things to be left off. The sandwich itself wasn't bad, but it was rather dry. It came with no mustard on it, and the bread was toasted to the point where it was a bit chalky. Again, it's a food court sandwich so it's not like I was expecting the world here, but I think it's fair to be objective about it. I'd most likely give it another shot someday, but I'd probably ask for a few things to be added to it (mustard, butter, etc) to make sure I get a more classic Cuban. read more

We have been going to the Meson location in Lee Vista on and off since they opened some years ago. Our visit today April 18 for lunch was horrible. We ordered a medianoche combo with fries, a yuca soup and corn fritters. The medianoche took almost 20 minutes to be ready. In the meanwhile the soup, the fries and the fritters were getting cold in a plate waiting for the medianoche. I said to the attendant that the soup was going to be cold and her answer in a mad manner was there was no choice because there was no more soup. So take or leave it. My reaction was simply saying that was mot the most proper answer and comment. She apparently did not liked what I said. She said more or less the same to my wife when she finally pick up the whole order. When we left, we were looking for the garbage can in the front but could not find it. The attendant in the area indicated to us not in the best manner that the can was in the opposite site, but never offered to take the garbage from us. Needless to say we are never going back to Meson. It is sad for us because Meson is a business from our Puerto Rico. We hate to see businesses like Meson going south in service and quality of food like they are doing. They seem to be having management and supervisory problems. read more

If you like authentic delicious Puerto Rican sandwiches at very reasonable prices this is the place to go. I also got the vibe that they want to rethink typical fast food. They are a counter service type of restaurant in the mall food court but the cashier tried to connect with me as a person and not just as another customer. They don't just say next and take your order and give you a little welcome line. I feel like they are trying to add a little touch of hospitality and connect you to their family. Then it feels like a Burger King because the cashier calls out your order on a microphone. Anyway, its $5.75 for special sandwiches including the meson special so that is a great enough price to keep me coming back to the Meson family. The Criollo bread was great. Think of a cuban and this is the type of bread you would want. They sell cubans too. If you don't get a pressed sandwich expect a fluffy and light bread with the right amount of crunch. Its not like eating your typical bread. Sometimes bread is heavy and dense and it feels like you are just eating bread. Even though the bread looks big, it is not like that when you bite in. This bread had the right amount of butter and crunch and really seems more like a complement rather than overpowering the meat and toppings. A small latte was $1.15 which was delicious and a great value considering you are at the Florida Mall. Overall the whole meal was a great value though and the atmosphere of the new dining pavilion is very nice. I am glad everything here is new and there are a lot of new restaurants because it really breathes new life into the mall. Since this is the only Meson outside of Puerto Rico, it will certainly be a stop on many of our shopping trips to the mall. When I was in Puerto Rico I remember eating a lot of plantains. They offer a wide variety of Puerto Rican favorites )specialties are sandwiches) and they have a big vegetarian menu, which is hard to find in fast food restaurants. Had a craving for a Philly. Haven't had one since I left El Paso. Saw this place and decided to try it. Saw Charley's nearby and I knew what their sandwiches were like. Charley's is good but I figured why not try something different. I should've gone with what I know. We got a Philly and a Reuben. Both sandwiches were mediocre in size and taste. We got drinks and fries with both and the total came out to $20 or so. The meat on the Philly was flat and tasteless. Looked like it belonged on a cold cut sandwich. It wasn't ribeye beef cut into slices and put on the grill as you'd expect a Philly to be. No melted cheese on it. Reuben was slightly better but lacked meat though there were 3 slices of bread on the sandwich. When the meat-bread ratio is that wrong, I don't feel you get value with your sandwich. Fries weren't bad but weren't good. Really bland and forgettable. They were hot, though. Definitely would not eat here again. High price, low food quality and quantity will keep me away. There are too many other choices in the food court to settle for this place. This place gets 2 stars for nice service.
