DO NOT!!! I mean, do not listen to anyone's taste buds when it comes to Melba's. I bought four different $10 plates with two sides for my adult kids to try. All plates come with one meat; add another for $5. Plate #1: Pork chop with gravy~bland; extra pork chop costs $5. Mac n cheese was terrible~overcooked, no cheese, no seasoning. You could see all the butter used. Yams {canned, not fresh} were dark brown and had a strange flavor I couldn't quite identify, maybe because I was too scared to taste them. Plate #2: Chicken wings had feathers and hair, looked like they came from a bargain bag. Mac n cheese and collard greens. Plate #3: Snapper~extra snapper costs $5. The one piece of fish looked like it was cut into three tiny strips. I felt ripped off. Mac n cheese was bad; yams again. Plate #4: Chicken Special~five drumsticks that looked like turkey legs, were flavorful and juicy, with greens and yams. ***The cornbread was $3 for just two bites, and that's it. The owner had the nerve to say it feeds two people, not adults! I sampled two items and was very disappointed. Never again! I tried Melba's Soul Food Kitchen in San Bernardino for lunch today after seeing their great Instagram page, and I'm glad I decided to stop by. My friend and I both ordered the chicken plate, which came with five large fried chicken legs and two sides. We both chose the yams and greens. The chicken was crispy and well-seasoned, and the five large pieces made it a very generous portion. The yams and greens were served in comfortable, standard portions and were both tasty. We both also ordered the peach cobbler, and it was really good. Most customers appeared to order their food to go. We were told the wait would be about 15 minutes, and that was accurate, even though they were fairly busy. The young lady working at the front counter was very friendly, engaging, and helpful when explaining the menu. They also have a clearly posted policy asking customers to check their orders, utensils, condiments, and everything else before leaving because food cannot be brought back inside afterward. I think that is a reasonable practice, especially with takeout orders. The meal was very filling, but I would have enjoyed having the option to add cornbread or another type of bread. Anyway, I ordered a ton of food because we wanted to try everything. We got the $10 chicken wing dinner with rice and gravy and potato salad. I got the catfish fillet with mac & cheese and candy yams. My husband got the sweetie fish with the greens and black eyed peas. We also got a side of baked beans. I really enjoyed the catfish and the fried chicken great flavor there. My husband loved his sweetie fish. People complain about the cheesiness of the mac, but I was OK with it. Sometimes mac & cheese doesn't have to be an overly cheesy mess. It was good. I would get it again. Now the candy yams were mushy and lacked the traditional sweetness, maybe I would get that again, but I guess they're good if you're watching your caloric intake, which is a bit of an oxymoron when talking about soul food. Baked beans and greens were both a thumbs up for me. I liked the rice and gravy also. The potato salad has mustard which I'm not a fan of, but my husband enjoyed it. I tried the Melba's world famous chicken with the collard greens and white rice . The chicken was really good and the collard greens were very flavorful. My husband got the red snapper , it was good just was a little small for a Man , but since my meal came with 5 drumsticks I was able to share my meal to even it out . My friend ordered the salmon , I tried a piece it was also really good . The young man at the register was very nice and courteous, even though it was packed in there with a lot of people he stayed professional and kind and polite . I highly recommend this place . My husband and I went to Melba's new location on Sterling on Sunday after church to have an early dinner. We had visited the first location and it was delicious! This second location was very disappointing. We got there and approached the counter. The guy at the register told us to wait while he was on the phone with a personal phone call and passing the phone around. That's was the first disappointment. When he finished his conversation he proceeded to just tell us "what did you want to order" we chose the $10 plate which consisted of 5 pieces of chicken and two sides. The guys told us it would be about 25 minutes. Here we were thinking it was going to fresh and hot but were we wrong. The food was already getting cold. We were also told they ran out of ice and all they had was warm bottled water! What kind of new establishment doesn't invest in an ice maker to make sure they have ice to serve their customers!? I feel if you're going to promote your business you should feel confident enough to know that you will have plenty of supplies especially if you are expecting a big crowd. The staff was very rude and there were lots of flies flying around. The restaurant wasn't even fully decorated and it was just a disaster. I will never go back. To top it all off my husband got diarrhea from what he ate. He reheated his chicken and there was a very foul smell as if the chicken was going bad! If someone is going to open a new business fist if all they need to make sure their staff is trained properly and that they have customer service experience not just hire family memes because they are cheap labor and don't know the business. Food is good for the price. They have more of a variety since they moved off of 5th street. There is seating in the new location. Some dishes can be better. They have kool aid too. Drinks need ice though I will say. If you want some cheap priced mom and pop home made food try them out. Some of the sides are not homemade but seasoned up right and decent for the price. read more

2 things made me not give this place a 5. One the mac and cheese was okay but it was a little dry and could have used a little more seasoning.
