Ok the only reason this wasn't 5 star was: 1. Fried chicken batter a bit too salty, but the chicken itself was good 2. Asked for yams as a side and didn't get it 3. Y'all, I had to come back and this time I brought my mom with me. Came EARLY at opening (11am) so we could make sure we'd be able to choose from the whole menu before they sell out of something (because they will). Spoke to Patrick (Pat), the owner and he said that Pat's Place has been in the works since 2018. He wanted to bring a restaurant to San Bernardino (in the hood) that would showcase the good and beautiful that the city has to offer. Just look at the beautiful building and landscaping. He did that and I'm so here for it all. This time I got those Oxtails everyone was buying up the last time I was here, with sides of Mac n cheese and green beans. I was also offered rice under the oxtails which sopped up that delicious gravy from the oxtails. Yes, it was all 10/10. Only small issue was the green beans still had the strings in them, but I'm not complaining. My second plate (cuz I'm greedy), I couldn't decide between the meatloaf and the smothered turkey leg. Patrick (owner) was kind and gave me a piece to try. It was delicious, but I figured I already had beef with the oxtails and so I'd go with the turkey. Smothered Turkey Leg I ordered with sides of greens and black eyed peas. This man cooks each dish with precision and just the right amount of flavor. I have NOT had one bad thing here. Even the cornbread is . My mom got the smothered turkey leg also and she devoured it! She said it was so good. She's already thinking ahead to Thanksgiving and wondering if Pat's Place will be catering. She also ordered a plate of just sides: black eyed peas, green beans, cabbage, and collard greens. I didn't event get a picture of her plate cuz it was gone before I knew it. We got a side of the peach cobbler. It was warm and for all you crust people...yes, it had a top and bottom pie crust! Tried them for the first time on Juneteenth, and it was everything I was looking for in an establishment when celebrating Juneteenth and finding a well-run establishment! For me, traditionally, it's catfish, watermelon and red soda water to commemorate; they had two of the three (catfish and red soda - strawberry) so that was a plus! But, the food was substantially better than I had expected. They offer dinners exclusively on their menu, but I asked for a catering size portion of catfish while ordering two of their dinners plates. Each plate comes with two sides (not including the rice or mashed potatoes that pair with the protein). I order the smothered pork chops and oxtail dinners. For the sides, because I was dumb and impatient (probably should have waited for the sautéed cabage, too), I ordered two sides of greens, sweet potatoes, and black-eyed peas. Let me go back for a second, I was greeted, as they opened, by Ms. Lori at the front. She was still setting up and asked us politely to wait while she finished before serving. The dinners are served Cafeteria style, so it's usually one person preparing your meal. When she got to me, she was able to answer my questions, and gave me her suggestions on what is good (errthang!!!) and she was right!!!!!! Because I wanted catering portions the owner Pat came out and asked if it was my first time visiting, and I told him it was. He then proceeded to have me sample every single side offering and a portion of the oxtails. Now back to the Sides!!! I have not eaten black-eyed peas in my adult life. My family cooks delicious soul food and such, and theirs are probably good, but I ain't ate them because I didn't like them as a kid. But, being kind and adventurous I figured why not? Let's just say I'll be ordering those errtime I go back! The sweet potatoes were just like I like them, not overly sweet or spiced, but tender and tasty; and the greens (they looked meatless) were solid as well! Pat and Lori seemed pretty confident in the food that was served, and based on my assessment, they both were spot on! I'm looking forward to coming back and trying the fried chicken, but I'd re-do the catfish, oxtails, and pork chops ERRTIME if I had to and wouldn't blink an eye. Service was awesome, it can it getting busy closer to lunch hours, and might require some patience, but nothing good comes from anything easy and they seem to get customers who don't make catering orders on the spot in and out quickly! When you walked in it was very clean and nice. They had a nice menu to choose from. The food was very good and the service was great. We drove into an immaculate parking lot adorned with beautiful plants and easy access to the entrance. When we walked in, we were greeted with a warm hello and bright smile from Lori. There were so many tasty-looking food items to select from, we had a hard time choosing. We ordered fried chicken (very nicely seasoned ), smothered pork chops over rice (was served two sizable and delicious pork chops ann gravy over a large portion of rice), collard greens, cabbage, macaroni and cheese (absolutely delicious and seasoned to perfection), with cornbread and drinks. We had hoped to save room to get an order of fried catfish, but we were stuffed. We dug into our meals so quickly that we forgot to take pictures, but every item was served piping hot. There were a number of side items to select from, so it was hard to narrow it down to two sides. We felt really special when the staff, including the owner, came out to give us a thank you for our patronage. Pat, the owner, was such a delight!! He came out to chat with us, asked about our dining experience (it was great), and thanked us for selecting Pat's Place. We also had the best peach cobbler we've had in decades. Our only regret is that we are just passing through. Otherwise, we'd dine here often. As I walked in, I could see all the food freshly prepared and ready to be ordered. The atmosphere felt welcoming right away. I noticed the owner, Pat, engaging in friendly conversation with customers who were already enjoying their meals. When he saw me, he warmly welcomed me and came straight over to assist me. We've tried a lot of Soul Food spots and most have their own take on soul food. We saw this spot passing by and decided to U-turn so we could add it to our list of whether to return or avoid. We plan on returning!! We ordered the fried catfish plate which came with a corn bread muffin and choice of two sides, we went with green beans and mac & cheese. We also ordered a side of collard greens to try along with every desert they had to offer except for the sweet potato pie. The fried catfish was fresh and very good (definitely recommend)! The green beans were delicious, the mac & cheese was also good. The greens were good to me, but my kids think it's an acquired taste in order to enjoy it (whatever), it was still good. I would've loved to give Pat's Soul Food 5 stars, but the deserts were what prevented that. The cheesecake, chocolate cake, and lemon cake tasted like something you'd buy at the store. The peach cobbler was delicious, would've went great if it were topped with whipped cream or came with ice cream. Other than that, this place is worth the stop if you're craving soul food. Staff is very friendly and helpful. It was our first time to try this place. The gentleman gave us free samples. We tried pretty much everything in their menu. I have came here before when it first opened and remember the greens being good and the Mac and cheese lacking flavor but figured it just needed some salt maybe. Well, the Mac and cheese got worse. I got the pot roast which was super watered down and worse than hospital food. The meat was so bland , couldn't even finish it . The greens were just ok. For Mac and cheese , even when it's not great it's usually still edible but not here , they use bagged cheese that isn't even melted and just tastes bad. Even the corn bread was too dry to eat. My little family and I had a wonderful dinner here tonight! I went for the pot roast, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, and collard greens--and, of course, a piece of fried chicken. Every bite was amazing and delicious. The only things missing were a little honey for the fried chicken (I usually love Louisiana-style hot sauce, but this bird just needed a touch of sweetness!) and maybe a slice of cornbread--I'll definitely be checking the menu for that next time, which will be very soon! Ambience When you first walk into Pat's Place, the atmosphere doesn't quite pull you in the way you'd hope. The first thing that hits you isn't the smell of home-cooked food, but something that smells chemical--really bleachy almost like degreaser acetone, or cleaning spray. From a chef's perspective, it reminds me of a kitchen right after it's been sanitized with too many chemicals,which can be off-putting for guests expecting the comforting aroma of fresh soul food. Service The service was okay; polite, but not engaging. I would've appreciated a little more personality or connection, especially since it was my first time there. Even something small, like a complimentary drink for first-time visitors, would go a long way toward making the experience feel more welcoming. Food Now onto the most important part--the food. They have a large hot line, though usually only half of it is full. For a new restaurant, I'd love to see them put more energy into presentation and consistency. The Hits: * The collard greens, cabbage, cornbread, and surprisingly, the catfish fillets; these stood out in a good way. * The oxtails are the star of the menu, and I definitely recommend trying them; if you can get past that initial smell at the entrance. The Misses: * The white rice, red beans, and black-eyed peas were disappointing. These sides tasted watered down, which tells me they're probably being held too long on low heat. Traditionally, these dishes can hold for a few hours, but after that, the quality drops fast. * The fried chicken missed the mark. It's not as good as KFC or Church's, and for a soul food spot, it really should be. Great fried chicken needs time; letting the marinated chicken rest in flour for about 10 minutes before frying helps create that thick, crunchy crust that people love. From a chef's perspective, I'd also suggest using Three Ladies jasmine rice instead of Uncle Ben's; it's higher quality, cooks faster, and uses less water. And for those red beans, a solid base starts with 3-4 smoked turkey legs sautéed with onion and bell pepper; that foundation brings real depth of flavor. Final Thoughts I've eaten here twice now. The first visit was great; the second was less impressive; the meatloaf fell short. Still, I'll come back for the oxtails, even though they're the priciest item on the menu, because they're one of the few things done right. One last note: the fried chicken tastes burnt, likely because the oil isn't being changed often enough. I'm not sure if the staff has experience in an industrial kitchen, but keeping the oil fresh is key. Despite the rough spots, I genuinely hope Pat's Place succeeds.
