Mellow is consistently good, a cut-above most pizza places. My favorite pizza is the Kosmic Karma; I agree with the reviewer who said that it is in the same league as really good pizza, just towards the lower end. They have an excellent selection of draft beers. read more

This place is located in a great spot right on "the corner." It has a great decor with brightly painted walls. The food is pretty good. It's definately a college kind of place. If you're ever in that area it is worth a try. read more

I used to loooove Mellow Mushroom, even the gluten-free pizza was great. Now that the gluten-free pizza is also vegan, it's a train wreck. The pizza crust is bland and no longer has the great crunch or rich flavor of the original gluten-free recipe. This was the one place where my husband and I could eat pizza that was great-tasting, you know, like normal people do. People who are vegan are vegan by choice. The sane among those of us on gluten-free diets do it because we have to for medical reasons. There is a big difference, and it makes me really upset when restaurants lump us together with vegans for reasons that I will never understand. They made a lifestyle choice that they knew would most likely mean writing off pizza in restaurants. Let them eat something else, for goodness sake. PLEASE bring back the original gluten-free pizza dough recipe. I can't see going back for pizza again if the recipe stays the same. I hate to say it, but it's the honest truth. The pizza is pretty good, and the beer selection is terrific, but the atmosphere is terrible - very post-frat. I guess with a name like 'Mellow Mushroom"... The trivia is particularly avoidable - they only manage to ask twenty (daft) questions in THREE HOURS - a shameless ploy to sell more drinks and food, while not even keeping you minimally entertained. read more

It was a really great experience- I like the pizza slices (they're huge!). Easy to find walking around. Ate inside, wasn't a bad experience. Delivery pizza is also pretty good- big fan of the chicken BBQ and the plain slice. Aside from the size of the slice, nothing really stood out to me. read more

AwwAfter a long day of not being able to eat due to having a few procedures/tests done & then having to meet w/ my doctor; you could say that I was pretty much ready to eat anything/anywhere that was near the campus, so my parents & I chose "Mellow Mushroom" (which besides the fact that I was starving, I'd actually been wanting to eat there for quite some time). For it being early afternoon, I was kind of surprised that they weren't very busy at all (which made me happy though knowing I hopefully wouldn't have to wait long for my food!) Once seated, our server, who happened to be extremely tall, came right over & got our drink orders & then promptly returned w/ them. When it came time to order, she again quickly returned. I had ordered a side salad w/ balsamic to start & calzone w/ ricotta, mozzarella, spinach & mushrooms & my parents started w/ a bowl of their mushroom soup to share, & then my mom ordered some type of mushroom sandwich & my dad got the sausage sandwich. My salad was fine & the mushroom soup they had gotten was really really good! And then as far as our entrees go, they both enjoyed their sandwiches w/ no problem- but my calazone on the other hand was unfortunately not very good at all, which bummed me out because I absolutely love calzones & therefor its usually what I'll get if I see it on the menu. But so there were actually a few things that made it unjoyable- 1 was that it was pretty burned on the bottom which made the breading taste pretty bad, even with trying to just drench it in the marinara sauce (which i also wasnt that fond of), another thing was that they totally jipped me by hardly putting any of the "fillings"(the ricotta, mozzarella, spin & mush) in it & the small amount that was in there didnt really even have a taste, like, honestly you couldn't tell the difference of what you were eating- like usually you can taste the ricotta (most places will mix in whatever seasonings/spices to add their own spin on it- bc ricotta by itself doesn't have that much of a taste) & they'll also season & sautee the spin. & mush. bc again, they alone don't have much flavor you could say, so therefor to me, it seemed like they just kinda threw them all together (bc the spin nor the mush had been sauteed/cooked prior to them putting it in there)- so basically what I got was a very small amount, (like 20%)of tasteless spin, mush & cheese inside I'd say what was about like 80% bread, burnt bread.. And once we had gotten our food, it was like our server disappeared, she never came back to ask us how everything was, & nor could I find anyone else to ask if they could get her- so I just basically nibbled on my parents stuff haha. And after like 20+ min our server finally came & I really really hate to complain or be a pain in the butt, so I was hoping that she would've noticed that mine was hardly eaten & that it was burned, but just my luck, it didnt happen- & she didnt even ask if i wanted a box since it was hardly touched lol- but i finally got the guts to mention it & thankfully it was taken off the bill. Stopped at Mellow Mushroom while traveling back home from vacation. I ordered a small funky q chicken pizza without bacon and a coke zero. The Coke zero tasted weird and when I asked my server if it was coke zero he offered to bring another from their other fountain. The new glass still tasted weird. The pizza did not have the artistic BBQ swirl on top like I've had at all the other Mellow Mushroom locations but still tasted great. I love the flavor of the crust with Parmesan sprinkled on it. The server did a very good job of keeping my drink glass full and making sure I was happy. Only three stars because of the coke zero problem and parking is a hassle. read more

Busy place, with a real college-town feel. So many yummy options, and good service. This is a must visit, when we are in C-ville.

The name is a little strange but get past that and you have yourself a good pizza joint. GREAT happy hour specials! The pizza is made on whole wheat crust and it's pretty good! The interior is comparable to a dimly lit zoo. They had a live band the night I came here which made the noise level even louder but it all added to the fun and lively atmosphere of this place. I always thought I hated this place. Every time I went in the evening, it was crowded and super-loud, and the pizza wasn't good enough to justify the annoying ambience. But then I went at four in the afternoon and sat outside. Our waiter was extra helpful and rearranged the patio tables for us. They have $10 pitchers of every beer on draft from 4 to 6, and our waiter gave us the deal even though we were a little early. One of my friends ordered hummus, which was not my style (too grainy and dry), but another got a white pizza and let me try a bite. It was awesome! Garlic, onions, mozzarella and feta, on a delicious pillowy crust. With that and my Magic Hat #9, I was a happy girl. Now I feel dumb for avoiding this place for the past three years. read more

I was here last Tuesday nite, and there was a line around the building. Keep in mind UVA is not even in session and it's not reunions. Went back on a Friday lunchtime, and the bar was deserted but for one other person. This is a chain, and all the MM I've been to have good draft beer selections. This one was no exception. There was a special seasonal food menu. I am a fan of molé, so I was pleased that they had a molé pizza. It was very good. They also had a molé chicken sub, which I did not try. The bartender was AWOL for quite a bit of the time. Whether she was smoking out back or had other duties in the restaurant I don't know. read more

For a mid week dinner stop it was perfect. Very fast service, our server was very friendly! Happy Hour from 3-6. Only knock is that they don't have flights as I was told some of the beers have high alcohol content. Solution: only offer certain beers for a flight. My sister and I split a custom medium pizza (three slices each) and a beer for $13 each, so the price wasn't as bad as it looked on the menu. There were some misunderstandings about the menu e.g. if cheese counted as a topping or not (I still can't tell you the answer), but we got through it. We ended up with a half vegan cheese and pineapple pizza and a half tempeh, artichoke heart, and banana pepper pizza with no cheese and a free Greek salad for checking in on Yelp, which we dumped on the pizza for extra toppings (ratchet I know). I enjoyed my vegan cheese and pineapple half, but my sister didn't because it was her first time eating vegan cheese, which has an acquired taste. The other half of the pizza was kind of bland-I expected the tempeh to be more favorable, which is why we got it, so that was kind of disappointing, but it wasn't as horrible as my sister made it out to be. We stayed for trivia, which turned out to be a good decision, but we totally could've gotten away with coming in a lot later to save a table. We went around 6:30, but there were still tables at 8:30. I love Mellow Mushroom pizza and their ridiculously addictive pretzels. Their beer menu is extensive and reasonably priced. HOWEVER, I docked two stars because 1) it is near impossible to get a table there --- UVa kids ruin everything ;) --- and the service is really slow and 2) it can be really noisy, not the kind of place I want to go to enjoy the company of my friends. read more

Went for lunch on a weekday. Service was prompt and friendly. The wings appetizer was nothing out of the ordinary. The wings were a bit on the soggy side and the blue cheese dip was runny. Had great pizza here the other night. Ordered a bbq chicken, cheese, and caramelized onion special, and it was delicious! The crust is what really makes it great. It seems to be wheat flour, but it's still light and airy with a nice chew. Tuesday nights are also pint night, where they have a great selection of craft beers for really reasonable prices. Not often in a city where I can get Mellow Mushroom so it's always good to grab a pie. Just grabbed carryout so I could get back to work but the place was packed full. Not sure how long the wait for a table would have been but it was tough to even make it back to the bar for pickup. Got the Kosmic Karma and as usual they did not disappoint.
