If I could give it 6 stars I would... it's literally a HIDDEN gem! Even though I followed google maps... it led to an empty street (so I'm going to post the beautiful courtyard where it's tucked away - it's a left turn from the Main Street in downtown going towards Mudhouse coffee) After I took my first bite... I was like... why wasn't there a line out the door and around the street... then I started getting a little mad that this man wasn't receding the hype that he should be getting! Where is Keith Lee when you need him. La Bodega might the greatest $5 sandwich I've ever had... simple ham and cheese on a crisp focaccia... but Oh the ingredients are so fresh! The Wichburger is 2 patty American Wagyu smash burger on a potato bun with a special sweet sauce... nothing fancy... but it all perfectly comes together! We arrived around noon on a Monday in early August. The counter-service restaurant is located in the Downtown Mall across from the (back end) of the CODE building. Parking can be tricky. We were not able to find any available street parking. We ended up parking in the Staples lot off Ridge McIntire Road and walking the short distance. The name of the restaurant is in small writing on the door so keep your eyes peeled. The inside is basically a counter with a small kiosk where you place your order. Behind the counter is the kitchen. There is no interaction with the staff which is a bit impersonal. We were in and out of there in no more than 5 minutes. There is no seating inside but there is a common courtyard outside with some tables. We took our order to a nearby winery that allows outside food. Win, win - beautiful day, wine and yummy sandwich. We ordered the Turkey No Wolf to split and a package of potato chips. It was the perfect size for us. The sandwich had plenty of inside goodies, and the bread was delicious. I walked in and started looking through the touchscreen menu. I wasn't greeted in but was bluntly asked "know what you want". I responded "no not yet" and continued looking at the menu. I was looking for a cold sub. Some of the sandwiches featured hot ingredients so i asked the man (the owner) "which of the sandwiches are cold?" he stared at me with a confused look on his face. So i repeated myself. "Are any of the sandwiches cold?" Again all i got was a confused glare. So, after several seconds of awkward silence, I rephrased again (thinking maybe it threw him off? maybe they are all cold subs?) "Are any of the subs hot?" i asked. Once again, nothing but a look of confusion from the owner of a sub shop being asked which of his sandwiches are cold or hot. I then asked "is that a weird question?" Finally, with a rude attitude, he managed to utter words and said he was confused because i asked him two different questions and that he "wasnt trying to be a "d!@k head but his brain just doesnt work that way". I only rephrased my question because he was awkwardly staring at me confused for several seconds before doing so. He then after all of that still did not provide any clarification to my question and left me standing there looking at the menu now confused and irritated. At least he admitted he was in fact acting like a "d!@k head" wether it was intentional or not. I turned around and left. Went here recently and asked if they could substitute in turkey (which they have for another sandwich) for roast beef on one of their six $15 sandwich options. I explained it was because I can't eat red meat, and the owner refused because "it's a brand integrity thing" and how he "runs his business." With that kind of attitude, the sandwich better be a flawless work of art, I guess. It was not. Although it was pretty tasty and creative (charred broccolini with potato chips mixed in), the sandwich was also very difficult to eat without a fork and a lot of napkins because of the bread choice and looseness of the ingredients--the kind of sandwich that is better for Instagram than for actually eating. I wish I could comment on any of the other sandwich options, but they all had some form of red meat (either beef or bacon). Overall, seems like a place more concerned with image than with customers actually enjoying their meal. With so many better, cheaper, and friendlier options on DTM, i will not be going here again. read more

My two brothers were visiting from CA and I brought them here for lunch. The owner and his son were embarrassingly rude - I'm glad my siblings had positive Charlottesville interactions everywhere else throughout their weeklong stay, because this interaction was absent of C'Ville hospitality - and all because my brother asked for mayo on his sandwich. If the owner doesn't want to accommodate customer requests, he should consider putting up a sign that says "We think our sandwiches are perfection, so please, no changes." That way, instead of the owner and his son being the only ones in the know, we would all know. Seems absurd to have a brand that doesn't allow changes to the menu . . . not inform your clientele prior to ordering . . . then get angry when they ask for mayo. As a tourist in Charlottesville, I went to "The Wich Lab" as they're apparently known for their smash burgers. When we arrived we were disappointed to find they were sold out. So we decided to order sandwiches off the menu instead. I asked for their Turkey Wolf sandwich. I'm not a fan of pimento cheese, pickled peppers or sprouts, so I asked to have them removed and add mayo instead. I was told by the young man at the register that I couldn't add mayo to my sandwich because the shop doesn't make substitutions. At that point, I no longer wanted to eat here and admittedly, I expressed my frustration by saying "no thanks, I'd rather not eat here and started to leave. The owner overheard our conversation, came out from the kitchen and asked how he could rectify the matter. I thanked him and asked for the sandwich with mayo. We went outside and sat on the patio to wait for our order. When we returned to pickup our sandwiches, the shopkeeper was clearly upset and was angrily making our sandwiches and throwing things around in the kitchen (I think to let us know he was angry). As we were walking out the door, my sister said to the owner that she really didn't appreciate her food being prepared with so much anger. The owner got angrier and insisted on refunding our money. The owner explained that a famous chef named Peter Chan or Chang refused to make changes and if I didn't like the way he prepares his food, don't eat there. If that's the way he feels, then why not post a sign for those of us who might not know that no substitutions are allowed. I wouldn't have gone in the first place. We sat back down on the public patio to explain what happened to our group. The young man came back out with a plastic bag and unceremoniously dumped the sandwiches (which we weren't going to eat) on our table and turned tail. I told him we weren't taking the sandwiches but he wouldn't stop walking. We decided to take the four sandwiches anyway and gave them to the homeless on the mall. Absolutely amazing!!! I was looking for somewhere to eat a good sandwich (simple not so simple mission) and thankfully I found the perfect place. If I get this spelling right, Aris runs this place and does an amazing job. There is a beautiful courtyard to enjoy the food outside and he's very lovely to talk to. I will be returning to and bringing all my friends so they can experience what I did. What makes all the difference is seeing someone making good food with passion and love.
