I was super excited to try the place out a few years ago (way before I knew yelp existed) and was neither disappointed or overly pleased with the pizza - hearth or brick oven pizzas weren't popular here in Columbia at the time... Mellow offers a WIDE array of toppings "unusual" (tofu/tempeh) which is appealing to many searching for an alternative to the standard delivery pizza joints. I can say that I was a fan of the Jerk Chicken Hoagie (had it over 5 yrs ago) - buuuuuut this week's visit and the Tempeh Hoagie... ehhhhh. I called in my order: Medium (which is HUGE btw) Holy Shiitake Medium House Special Medium Cheese add Pepperoni, Tomato, and Sausage Small Holy Shiitake (hold the garnish) Small Cheese Half Pepperoni Whole Tempeh Hoagie (with a side of chips - offered by the chick that took my order) $106 (before tip) The staff were VERY polite when we entered (cooks even bid us farewell upon our exit)... Bartender forgot the chips (chips that I didn't even know about, but were offered). Parking is kind of annoying on the weekends (there are 3 or 4 FREE designated spots at the back of the building) - you'll either have to do "Valet" for $5 or find an open meter. It is hard for me to write this review because I am instantly craving the amazing tastyness they create in the kitchen. My mouth is watering and can't wait to go back. We were promptly greeted upon entering the restaurant by the hostess. We were shown to our seat and waited to be served. The service was horrible to start, but the waitress didn't know we were in her section so she passed us up several times. So no harm no foul besides it gave us time to catch up. I ordered the meaty calzone. It came complete with marinara dipping sauce. This has to be one of the best pizza items I've ever had. The sauce meat and goodness is simply amazing. When it comes to pizza crust, Mellow Mushroom has one of my favorites! There is plenty of crust in the outer rim of their pizza and it is nicely seasoned, soft, and chewy - just how I like my pizza crust! On a Saturday night, we ordered a half buffalo chicken and other half white pizza for pick up. They told us it would be 35 minutes, but had to wait 10 more minutes after we arrived to get it. We didn't really mind waiting though because the atmosphere was fun and the staff was very friendly and talkative! A few things you should know about MM before you go: 1. This is not a good place to go if you want traditional or simple pizza. 2. This is in a college town so you will get collegiate servers. I waited on a takeout order for 30 minutes after the to-go employee offered to bring it up to the second floor when it was ready. After asking a second floor bartender about my food, he explained that it was ready on the first floor. Using very plain words, I asked why the to-go person did not bring my food up. This was one of the few restaurants open on 4 July. The food was excellent and our waitress was a rockstar trying to keep everyone happy. There were too few employees working for the number of customers. There wasn't a working soda fountain downstairs so drinks had too be brought down from the bar area upstairs. We recently visited Mellow Mushroom for the first time. I ordered the Holy Shittake pizza and my husband ordered something with a lot of meat on it. This was the best pizza we have ever had! The restaurant was clean and our server gave excellent service. We got a kick out of reading the titles of the "books" posted around the interior! Lol Mellow Mushroom is going on our list of regular places to eat and our only place to get pizza from now on. I did knock one star off my review due to limited free parking. We had to pay a guy $5 to park in a spot right behind the restaurant. It is also difficult to see the Mellow Mushroom name on the free spaces because they need to be repainted. Mushrooms everywhere! I was actually in South Carolina visiting a friend who went to school in the area and it was so awkward being the only Asians in... the entire town. The pizza here is awesome though! My favorite was the Gourmet White (olive oil, minced garlic, sun dried tomatoes, provolone, mozarella, fresh tomatoes & onions). I have always loved mellow mushroom. I came here for lunch with my mom. I like to sit at the bar upstairs, the downstairs "bar" area doesn't have all of the beers on tap. I got the stuffed mushrooms for the 1st time and I wasn't disappointed. any of the appetizers that have their balsamic glaze is probably a good bet.
