I have been wanting to go to The Mellow Mushroom for a while. I tend to prefer crazier types of pizza to your standard pepperoni or cheese, so after hearing someone mention the different types of pizza I made plans to visit with friends. We were not disappointed! We ordered two appetizers, garlic bread and pretzels. Both were good, but not out of this world. It took a while for the pizza to come out, but the waiter warned us ahead of time, which I really appreciated. And boy, was it worth it! I shared a small Mega-Veggie with a friend and we loved it. It was so good. Although I love Crooked Crust, also located in Denton, this one now shares a spot in my list of favorite places to get pizza in Denton. It is kind of pricey, but the food makes it worth it. I especially love the staff there is so friendly. Our waiter was very nice and accommodating. There were six of us and I imagine it was very difficult to split up our bill but he did it without complaint and was generally just a jolly guy. I wish I could remember his name. Last night I went with my family here and have never experienced that amount of disrespect that was shown while eating out. It took more than TWO HOURS to get pizzas out, while one never even coming out. FORTY FIVE minutes for drinks, which in my understanding takes five minutes to pour, no more than ten to get to the customer. After more than hour, our burnt pretzels arrived, and then thirty minutes later our silverware. My boyfriend who was with my family and I, have both worked in the restaurant environment. We were both shocked of how things were handled, for which we would have been fired for in my place of employment. After all of which, with my family not even receiving their pizza after two hours with a two year old starving, they walked out. The manager preceded to try and make them pay for their two beers and burnt pretzels, and we had to push that that was not happening. After being there for more than two hours, the worst customer service, and no empathy, they gave us only 20% off of our bill, which is unacceptable. If food is more than twenty minutes late where I work we offer to cover if they are upset, or offer free desert, etc. but maybe that is just because we actually care about keeping business. They do not care about you as a customer, but only your wallet. They did not care we had a two year old starving, our food was burnt, that their AC doesn't work in the damn state of Texas, and that we were obviously hungry. Working in the industry I understand COVID has brought lots of hardships. I know how it to feels to be understaffed and backed upped, but they don't know how to deal with it. All other restaurants I have been to lately, even with the hardships, at least know a common thing known as respect. The food wasn't even that much of a problem for me, it was the way they didn't care about us as people but just willing open wallets. Which is why if you take a further looks in the comments, the business owner responds to the ones he doesn't like by bashing us for speaking out about how he can't train waiters properly to deal with situations, is money craving, and butt hurt. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Not only would I recommend it for the food, but the atmosphere, beer selection, and service are fantastic! I had cheese pizza and it was to die for! Finally a pizza joint to give J&J's Pizza some competition. We had a few different types of pizza on our table and all of them were delicious. I had the House Special pizza which was awesome! They have a great draft beer selection and the beer was cold. The owners have really done a nice job designing the place to make it warm and inviting. It's hard to believe how they have transformed the building into such a cool place. The service was friendly and attentive. A lot of yelp complaints are about the service and delays in getting the pizza, but they (the Mellow Mushroom) may have worked out the kinks, because we had no problems. They do make the pizzas to order, so it does take a little longer than a fast food pizza franchise. I like everything about this place. If I want pizza it will either be the Mellow Mushroom or J&J's Pizza. read more

We love this location! Has more atmosphere and better vibe than the flower mound store. Something about being in a college town I guess. Pretzel appetizers a must - they take a bit but worth it with a cold beer. Which the selection is great by the way. I'm only giving two stars because of the service. The food is great and if you're willing to wait an hour + for your food then it's the spot for you. If you're expecting quick service do not eat here. I have been several times and each time it has taken no less than an hour for our pizza to come out. The last time that I was there it was not very busy (in fact less than half of the restaurant was full) and it took an hour and 15 min to get our pizza. My hubby and I love going to the Mellow Mushroom! They have the best bruschetta I've ever had and OMG, the pretzels and beer cheese.... YUM! I like the pizza but it isn't my favorite ever, it's the bruschetta and beer that we love. They have lots of local beers which the hubs loves. The atmosphere is cool and laid back, I definitely prefer the Denton MM to the one in Fort Worth just for the layout. read more

We're from out of town, and this place gets the highest praise for accommodating to our food allergies, diet preference and pickiness. To start off I love pizza, and any pizza restaurant I go to I always love it but my experience here was a little different. We waited about 5 minutes before we got our drinks after being there 10 minutes, and then things spiraled from there. It took about 25 to 30 minutes for our food to come out! We had 6 people at our table and the waiter brought out 1 order at a time. When one of the people at the table and I got our food the waiter gave us the wrong food, but we realized it too late. Other people at the table got the wrong food, so we finally got the manager to our table and explained. When we walked out we all said we're never coming back here. We had lunch at Mellow Mushroom before a UNT campus tour. We were pleasantly surprised. It was such good food, We all enjoyed our food! We all ordered lunch specials. They had wonderful salads, pizza and sandwiches. The only downfall I saw was all lunch special pizzas had red sauce. You had to have a pizza with red sauce:(, which is not what I wanted. LOVE "the shroom" as we affectionately call it. I'll be up front before I go on a pizza rave... The service is slow. Friendly, cheerful, helpful, and sooooper slow, but worth it - that's the ONLY reason it doesn't get 5 stars. When they first opened, I just thought maybe they had some kinks to work out service-wise, but turns out they're just really committed to the stoner persona. Food - Fantastic. Without a doubt it's in the upper echelon of Denton pizza, gracing the likes of J&J's, Napoli's, Palio's and of course the now-defunct Milano's (respect). They also have a very wide variety of styles and offerings, including some very creative and tasty combos. If you like tons of stuff on your pizza, the house combo is a good go-to (I think it's called The Classic). Last visit we had a pesto-based pizza that was awesome too. Atmosphere - pretty cool! Funky decoration, it's a cool space, has that one weird private booth, lots of good raised up booths (like an old school Italian restaurant), and then floor tables that have a nice view of Industrial and the corn kits building through the front window. Also has a less-used back patio that's cool for spring and fall. Bar - lots of craft brews, including many locals like Rahr, Deep Ellum, Armadillo, Franconia, etc. The actual bar isn't huge, just has a few stools. Overall, going to Mellow Mushroom is a positive experience. The food is tasty, there are plenty of menu options to meet the needs of everyone, and they are always happy to make adjustments if you ask them. However it is very pricey, and therefore not ideal for the average family to enjoy very often. Parking can be a bit of a challenge in the evenings, but if you get it to go then you can park on the street behind the restaurant and just cut through the alley to pick it up. We decided to ride the train to Denton and walk around for a while. While walking we saw the place and thought it looked like a fun place to eat. So happy we did. The place is a funky dive-looking kind of place. Waitstaff was perky and friendly. We ordered a half order of the pretzels with the beer cheese. Outstanding. Fresh and hand made, and the cheese was on point. A great feature of this restaurant is the fact that they let you do half-and-half on their specialty pizzas. We chose half meat and half philosopher. The meat was red sauced and loaded with succulent meats. The philosopher is an olive oil and garlic sauced masterpiece of steak, kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, and feta. We had this the first time in FL a couple years back, when we moved to Denton from Bartonville, we saw their was a MM ten minutes away! Even though the service was not top notch, (they were training a bartender), the food not as great as I remembered, but non-the less, delish! The toppings you can choose from are amazing from-applewood bacon to shitake mushroom, deli meats, and roasted garlic...other places use cheap ingredients, here I can have a delicious salad, or pizza with whatever toppings I desire.
