The owner knew sign language which is easier for us to communicate. I did not expect that the cafe was super busy. My friend and I decided to go there because we used to go to Starry Cafe before it became Matilda Cafe. We wanted to see how food and drinks taste like. We were in awe of their food and it was so delicious!!! We were tempting to order more breakfast burritos with their homemade salsa verde. I'm glad that we went there and it is all worth it stopping by and they also offer wines and beers. It's not very common for cafes to serve alcohol. Breakfast sandwich and a pumpkin latte. That's what I ordered for my first time eating at Matilda. The breakfast sandwich is tasty. Egg and bacon with arugula and I believe some sort of a hot sauce (I can't remember) that gives it a fantastic flavor. The English muffin is multigrain I believe. Heavy enough to leave you full. Very tasty. The lattes here are some of the creamiest lattes I've ever had. They're so tasty. I'm not a big latte drinker but when I want one I want a good one. This will always be at the top of my choice list. Matilda is new and fantastic. You should totally check them out! read more

I had to downgrade a bit, although I maintain that the banh mi was excellent...The BLT tried was a pretty wonky composition...due mainly to the fridge cold salsa-like spread they use to make it spicy. Just threw everything off. The sandwich further barely had a strip of bacon in it. I still enjoyed their uber greasy bread, but the BLT was not an enjoyable contender here. $17 for a latte and this particular BLT didn't leave me satisfied. read more

This is the first time we ventured out to a coffee house since last March. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting Matilda's. What a great little spot on University with plenty of street parking. The coffee was good and the service was great. There was plenty of seating available with outlets to plug in and stay for a while. We both had work to do, so we started off with coffee and 2 hours later transitioned to adult beverages. So In my mind, they offer the best of both worlds! We'll definitely be back. read more

Such a cute spot in the flatiron building for a quick meal! I came on a Sunday around noon and it was busy but the line wasn't long, we were able to find seats, and food still came out pretty quickly. I got the short stack of pancakes while my friends got the avocado toast and breakfast sandwich. Pretty interior and I look forward to coming back when it's warm out to eat outdoors! A great spot to check out! We stopped by for lunch today and sat on the patio to enjoy the beautiful weather. The iced vanilla latte was one of the best ones I've had! It was very smooth, not too sweet or watered down. I enjoyed it with their veggie sandwich which was delish! I also ordered my 3 year old their Belgian waffle which was topped with fresh fruit and peanut butter powder. The only reason why I didn't give them 5 stars is because there wasn't a lot of food options as far as kids go. I ordered him the only option he would like which was the waffle. It's a nice place on a warm day or when ever the weather is sunny and not too hot. They have good breakfast options. I got the breakfast sandwich. It was filling and tasted pretty good. Had to add some hot sauce to spice a bit. I also got a salted Carmel iced latte. Was also good too. They have indoor and outdoor seating. You king of pick where you want to sit. The Chai though!!!!! So yummy and comforting. I love how they spice the top and the design is beautiful. I got the egg BLT and it was just perfect. The tomato jam they use really topped it off. The most unique thing about it was the bread. The description said an English muffin but it was much thinner and lighter than an English muffin. So happy with this redo of starry Nites... Was skeptical at first as I have loved start nights eclectic funky vibe but after visiting Matilda I'm in love with the clean lines the fresh interior and the re- organized interior. This place absolutely lives up to the hype! I miss Starry Night, but this new spot is so fun and cool... I'm happy it was replaced by something so awesome. First off, Matilda calls itself an "Australian" coffee shop, so of course the drinks are bomb. I had a glass of champagne and some unsweetened iced tea, and both were solid. To eat, I had a warm Cuban sandwich, and my friend had the chicken sandwich. Both were like comfort food to eat... super savory and satisfying. I think my favorite part about this place is the outdoor seating. It really feels like you're hanging out at a French café when you're there. There's also a fair amount of indoor seating, but seats do get taken quickly since a lot of people sit and work on their laptops... so be prepared to wait for a seat if it's really busy. It's just not ready for prime time. Matilda's seems to be out of place in NOTA. It's pretty, clean, and bright, but lacks the warmth and casual ease of the neighborhood. I haven't spoken to any neighbor who has been delighted with their experience. My own experience with Matilda's includes calling to order ahead so I would have time to grab lunch and support a neighborhood business but being told they can't deal with takeout. Going to Matilda's later that day to sit and read the paper and have a bit of dinner, but dinner (a sandwich) took 20 minutes, I had to leave my table to go get it, leaving my belongings out on the patio unattended, having no salt or pepper, and afterward, there was no convenient place to put dishes. The sandwich was okay, but not worth the price. read more

The restaurant is a bright spot, but I was not comfortable sitting inside. Several stools allow you to sit at counter areas but you wind up sitting too close to others. As far as table seating inside, three tables were taken up with one individual each doing other than drinking or eating. One woman had taken one long table at which at least three could sit and spread her work out. All occupied the tables for much longer than we were there, so I hope the individuals taking up a whole table for a long time are buying enough for the owner to make a profit. The worst was that we bought a croissant filled with apple and I was stunned to have it refrigerator cold. I've never had a cold croissant, which turns it soggy and chewy. When I mentioned it to the owner, he thought it was great that the croissants were refrigerated. Has he never eaten one? We will not be going there again. read more

What a cute cafe! It's so open and bright. The food was delicious. We ordered a pastry which was from ancient grains and delicious as well as they're breakfast sandwich. I really like the Sriracha ranch sauce, it gave it just enough spice and the arugula was a really nice addition as well. Not sure where the biscuits came from, but they were also very tasty. A great little coffee spot in the city. I had a maple sweet cream cold brew and a breakfast sandwich. The coffee was delicious with just the right amount of sweetness. When I am at a coffee shop I want to feel cozy. I want to feel like the coffee shop envelops me in a welcoming atmosphere. That is definitely not what I get at Matilda. The space is sterile, sparse, and echoing. It's definitely possible they have more comfortable seating normally. Additionally, the beverage menu is very slim, and they don't have anything except for half-and-half for you to add to your coffee on the sideboard. read more

Matilda'a has become a weekly (if not more often) stop for me and my pup on our walks. The staff are extremely friendly and allow you to come in with your pup when you order. When I'm not with my pup I often meet a friend for coffee and sit inside or out and enjoy a nice cup of coffee and something off the food menu. I love the avocado toast on sourdough- the sourdough is something out of this world and tastes so fresh. They also offer wine and beer in addition to local kombucha. The vibe at Matilda is friendly, relaxed, and come as you are which I love. I am SO happy they opened and happy I found them when I moved back to the area. read more

Been here a few times. The food is ok but the quality is hit and miss, sometimes it's good sometimes it's greasy. My biggest complaint is that you can only order in person- no online orders despite advertising it on their website- can't even call in an order- I tried bc I figured maybe their website was down and they would be accommodating. Rather, they fed me some excuse about having only one register and therefore they don't take call in orders and then abruptly hung up the phone on me. Having been in food service for 20+ years I've never heard anything more ridiculous or been treated more rudely. Especially while still exercising social distance practices in their store. Will not be going back for the overpriced food or coffee. Going here is on par with going hungry as far as I'm concerned. read more
