This new Lounge Bar created by the person that owned Clarkwood when it was good really knocked it out of the park with this very sultry inspired Lounge. Luan is an amazing bartender and we will follow him everywhere and I even told him "You know this place feels like the ambiance I miss at Clarkwood" that's when I discovered the owner who created Clarkwood creared Melrose as well, I had the pleasure of enjoying 2 cocktails there, a Carajillo and Southside, for bites we had some truffle fries which were amazing and the sauces they serve with it are really good! Can't remember what it was but of course ketchup and mayo and if you know about that you know mixing that on fries tastes amazing! I was impressed with their Tuna Rice Cakes, I was skeptical at first but Luan knew it is Lent and suggested and he knew exactly what I needed! One of the waitresses there, Alejandra, was very sweet and accommodating, she allowed me and my friend to probably bore her ear to death with chatting her up but she was very graceful and a class act! It's needless to say Melrose did it right and was very particular about staff selections which I love! Everyone there was amazing and very welcoming! Top notch service if I may say so myself!! And the ambiance... breathtaking! I love this new rendition and I really think I found a spot I can finally frequent. Melrose is the newest cocktail lounge on the block inspired by the owners of Clarkwood, Concrete Cowboy and Clutch. Came here on a Saturday evening. They had just fully opened around Christmas. The cocktail bar was once La Grange, which was a Tex Mex bar. Across the street doesn't look like much with graffiti/fenced off buildings. The area is dark, but there's valet and street parking. The outside is a bit inconspicuous. If you're dressed like you're going to a cocktail bar, they don't really check IDs. I showed mine anyway. The doormen/bouncers were swanky and cool, dressed to the nines in black suits. The interior has a California cool vibe like Padres wine bar in The Heights. It also reminds me of Squable. There's cute seating with round tables, booth seating, and lounge couches. Later into the evening, people congregated around the bar area to mingle. Smaller inside. I can see how it can get crowded. Not sure if they'll turn part of the outdoor area into an outside patio. The food menu isn't fully set yet. Charcuterie is the only food item on the menu for $40. The speakeasy Aye Candy in Spring Branch is cheaper with better variety like macarons and Ferrero Rocher mixed with the meats & cheeses. I make charcuterie boards, and none of the ones I've seen at the cocktail bars are that fancy to pay $30-40. Word on the street is that the cocktail bites will be created by Michelin-star Tatemó's Chef Emmanuel Chavez. I can't wait to see what concepts he has! I liked Tatemó. The music is similar to Clarkwood and gets progressively louder as the night goes on. Kind of hard to hear, so you have to yell talk. Lol. It's nice that they're open till 2 am. Not many cocktail lounges are. The drinks are beautiful and carefully crafted. You can also order off menu as my friend did with The Suffering Bastard (bourbon, gin, lime juice, bitters, topped with mint). The others had the Espresso 'Tini, Old Fashioned (not pictured) and Detox Martini. The Detox Martini was refreshing. The servers explained it as a "green juice" and that it's seemingly healthier. Lol. I had the Aloe + Rose Gin n Tonic. So pretty! It was more on the sweet side, maybe because of the elderflower tonic water. Our server was nice and she and everyone else regularly checked on us. We all enjoyed our drinks. Water is extra, btw. Tap water is sink water if you dare. Lol. Restrooms are ok. It's dark in the women's restroom and has only about 4 stalls. There's still blue tape visible along the doorway. Doors lock weird. Press the tiny button. Could use automatic toilets like the sink, but it'll do. They mostly take walk ins, per website, but we got there at 8 pm, and people had reserved for 10 pm, so we basically got kicked out of our table. I didn't realize there was a time limit on how long we got to sit. We had enough time to fit in 2 cocktails and some water. Wish we got to stay there longer. All in all, we enjoyed the venue and might consider it for NYE. If not, we'll be back at some point! read more

I'm quite disappointed with my experience with this place. My friend & I were excited to come here after hearing about it thru TikTok so we wanted to come here after work for drinks. First of all, parking around here is awful, and to do valet is either $10 on the street or $20 in their parking lot. I arrived before her and it was already packed. So many seated areas had the "reserved" sign on it, which I didn't realize I needed to make reservations for. I saw a few seats opened and asked the girls sitting next to there and asked them if it was okay if I sat there and they told me that they would "kick" us out by 7 pm for the party that had reserved the area. So I sat there. No one came up to me for a while asking about drinks or anything but I also didn't want to let go of the seats. Finally when my friend arrived, a bartender came around and asked us what we wanted and we ordered two happy hour drinks and the charcuterie board. The drinks were strong as hell, but ok, and not sure if the charcuterie board was the happy hour size or if it's the regular size, but it was decent. We were anticipating to be told to leave the area by 6:50 but surprisingly the party didn't arrive yet. By the time my friend & I had decided to leave, which was around 7:10, that's when a bartender came to tell us to leave, which we were already doing so. So not to complain about having a good A/C BUT Melrose has some technical issues they need to workout. On a Wednesday evening celebrating my besties bday we decided to visit Melrose. It had popped into the feed and looked really nice. Inside is very nice and aesthetically pleasing but once you sit down be prepared to literally freeze. From the start to the end I was able to cool my drink with the frost that came out of my mouth. NO JOKE! We asked the waiter if they could adjust the temp and they said no. Others began to enter the restaurant and they also asked if the temp could be adjusted and they said no. Time after time of asking and temp in the room never changed. The food you order is instantly cold. Your drink doesn't melt which is a plus but what an uncomfortable position to be in just for drinks and charcuterie boards. I have no plans of going back because I was not impressed by any of it at all. The price point for drinks range from $14-$20 and food is about the same maybe a little bit more. Couples beware: this is not a date-night spot. After reading positive reviews, I made a reservation and was genuinely excited to try Melrose. Unfortunately, the experience was awkward and poorly managed, to the point that I was embarrassed for having spoken so highly of it to my partner beforehand. We had a 7:45 PM reservation and were promptly seated on the patio. We immediately ordered a charcuterie board and two drinks. About an hour later, the same host who seated us came over and told us we needed to move to accommodate a larger party. This was confusing, as we were not walk-ins and had been there well under the stated two-hour limit. When I questioned this, I was told we were "allowed two hours," even though it was not yet 9:00 PM. Trying to be accommodating, we agreed to move, but declined being relocated to the bar and instead accepted another patio table. Even then, we were informed we would need to move again at 9:30. At that point, my partner was understandably frustrated. What was the point of a reservation if our table was effectively only guaranteed for a short window? The host involved (I believe her name was Erika) was dismissive and rude throughout the interaction. I don't understand why we were seated in an area intended for a larger party in the first place, only to have our experience repeatedly interrupted. We had also ordered additional items, burgers, fries, a spicy tuna small plate, and more drinks, but due to the table changes, the kitchen was no longer able to fulfill part of the order. By the time it was offered again, we declined because it felt clear we were no longer welcome. Our new server, Eliana, was kind and apologetic and let us know our tab had been prematurely closed out by the previous server. She offered us two shots, which was appreciated, but by that point the damage was done. This is a beautiful space, but the service and reservation management were shockingly poor. For a place that presents itself as upscale, the experience felt disorganized and pretentious rather than polished. I've been here multiple times over the past year without issue, which is why last weekend was especially disappointing. I reserved space months in advance for a group of about 30 people to celebrate my law school graduation, along with a few classmates. Unfortunately, the experience was chaotic, unprofessional, and felt racially discriminatory. Most of my group that came that night was Arab, Hispanic, and South East Asian origins. First, two members of my party (my classmate's father and brother) were denied entry for allegedly not meeting the dress code. This made no sense, there were men already inside dressed similarly. When I pointed out that the website states "smart casual" (not business casual), the female manager became argumentative and aggressive, claiming the dress code "changes after 9 PM," which is not stated anywhere online or communicated during the reservation process. Notably, white men dressed similarly were allowed inside, while these two Hispanic men were not. At one point, a male staff member told me to "calm down" even though I was calm, the manager was the one being rude and confrontational. Second, service was extremely disorganized. Our orders were repeatedly wrong, food and drinks were forgotten, or we were told we hadn't ordered items that we clearly had. Third, a male staff member told me I needed to make all my guests sit down because we were "in the waitresses' way." The reason many of us were standing was because the AC was blasting directly onto the seating area and it was freezing. He argued with me until another guest confirmed exactly what I had already explained. Eventually, they adjusted the AC, which I appreciated, but it's a bar, and people standing should not have been an issue to begin with. Fourth, while we were seated, staff began hanging decorative wreaths directly above us. This should have been done before opening or before guests arrived. Fifth, after a few hours, a waitress told one of my guests that the table I reserved months ago was being taken by another party. When I was brought into the conversation, I explained that I was never told there was a time limit on the reservation, despite extensive communication with management beforehand. The same female manager returned and aggressively stated there was "nothing she could do" because the other party was paying "$4,000." I told her this was ruining my graduation celebration and that I still had guests arriving. After arguing back and forth and her claiming she looked at the emails and saw they told me about the time limit (which is a lie), she finally moved us outside. Sixth, later that night when some of us went back inside to use the restroom, we noticed that the tables we had been forced to give up were not even being used. Seventh, another guest of mine, who is an Arab man, was initially denied entry for his outfit, even though he was dressed very well and better than most of the people inside already (button-down shirt, dress pants, and clean sneakers). He was only allowed in after stating he was part of my party. Given everything that had already happened, this felt race-based. Eighth, valet service was a mess. Several friends waited 45 minutes for their cars while people who arrived after them received their vehicles immediately. Ninth, one of my guests witnessed a Black man ahead of her in line being denied entry despite clearly meeting the dress code. Taken together, these incidents strongly suggest racially motivated and inconsistent enforcement of policies, along with extremely poor management and communication. This was meant to be a celebration of a major milestone for a bunch of new lawyers, and instead it was stressful, upsetting, and unprofessional. I will not be returning and would not recommend this place, especially for large groups or events. Management needs to chill out, this is Houston, not Monaco. read more

I have been here several times because I believe in things changing for the better after ownership sees the reviews people are posting! Nothing changes. I made the same review on Google and I still stand behind it! This place is gorgeous! Has so much potential to be a very inclusive nightlife vibe. But they have a hidden code of who to let in and who not to let in. And it seems very racially charged. The reviews above one star are pushing it. The whole reservation thing is bogus because I have never had a reservation here. It is pretentious, and you will be looked up and down, and they decide mentally whether they want to let you in or not. If you are an upscale, well dressed, elite. You will most likely get in if your skin is fair But anyone else especially black good luck! I brought my mom here on Mother's Day as I waited till the last minute and couldn't find reservations anywhere else. I did enjoy our brunch! I won't lie to you about that. Kaitlyn, our waitress was extremely kind. Thank you for giving my mom a good experience. That is the only reason that the three stars is here . The pancakes were really good. As far as me being the nightlife queen that I am, I don't know if I will ever come back here. I know what you do to people at the door and that is not right.
