Fiddle enjoying the view in Cambridge!

It can be a long process and being flexible with timing (since folks have daytime jobs they are holding while trying to help these animals) and following listed instructions is very necessary. This is a labor of love for the folks who do this and they clearly prioritize the wellbeing and fit on the cat's side which I believe in. We couldn't be happier with our pet (formerly Max now Fiddle!) that we adopted in 2021.

I used to foster cats for this organization and I mostly interacted with Roy. Some of the cats needed medical treatment during their time at my place, I've seen how expensive those medical bills were and when I do the math I see that the adoption fee can hardly cover the medical expenses incurred. They have very reasonable adoption fee to facilitate the adoption, and they make sure that the cats fully recover from any known health condition before they get adopted - one pair of cats stayed with me for two months because one of them had an upset stomach. We took the time to figure out the problem and find the food that he can tolerate. Roy is indeed a very busy person. From what I know he works two jobs in addition to running the rescue business - which itself seems like a full time job to me - and he probably is heavily subsidizing the rescue thing out of his own pocket. So if he is not that responsive, please be considerate and simply try to contact him again. All the cats rescued here have foster parents, so I would suggest talking to them to get to know more about the cats. The adoption process is simple - well it could seem to happen too quick for some people, but if you need some more time to think, just ask! I really enjoyed this fostering experience. I had to end the fostering because I need to leave Boston, but I ended up adopting one of the cats I fostered and took her with me all the way to California! She is an amazingly friendly and calm cat who does not mind traveling with me and adapts to her new home pretty quickly.

I've read almost all other reviews about Melrose Humane Society and Roy. I'm sure it's case by case, but my experience talking/working with Roy on the cat adoption was absolutely smooth and pleasant. As a first-time cat owner, I keep throwing questions to Roy and he was always there and very patiently explaining what I need to do for the cat. I truly admire his dedication and efforts he put on rescuing & caring for cats. I adopted a 8-months female calico cat, and she is absolutely gorgeous and sweet . I would highly recommend Melrose Humane Society and Roy!

    Maggi

I've had my cat for almost a year that I adopted from MHS. Roy was very helpful with the adoption process and responded promptly! Maggi (FKA Xanadu) was well taken care of by the foster parent and Roy provided her medical records along with the application. I'm happy to have found my angel kitty from MHS, she's been a blessing. The only thing I would wish is that for skittish cats like Maggi, MHS let the cats stay only with experienced foster parents. Maggi's neurological tendencies were dismissed as pain from matter by the foster parent, it was only their first time fostering a cat so I don't blame them for it.

I have been wanting a cat for years, and a few weeks ago my roommates agreed to let me start applying to foster a cat. I initially spoke with Roy, who told me about a bonded pair he thought could work. That evening (yesterday) I spoke with Roy and discussed the details of the foster. After our call, however, my roommates decided they weren't comfortable with it after all, particularly due to limited space in our apartment (3 bedrooms, 5 people, and a dog). When I told Roy today that I was sorry but I wouldn't be able to foster after all, he got incredibly rude with me and attempted to guilt and shame me into fostering anyways. I explained that I just wasn't the best person, or house, and I didn't want to be unfair to the cats by not properly providing for them. At this point Roy attempted to persuade me to foster just one cat, which I would have loved to do, but was not an option since my roommates had vetoed the idea. I tried to explain this to Roy but he essentially blamed me for these two cats potentially dying (wtf?) and did not respect my answer that it was not only up to me. After I confirmed that I definitely wasn't going to foster, he told me to "don't bother messaging me again", and that any other texts I sent would be blocked. I had planned on reaching out again at a later point when I was actually confident I could properly foster, but I highly doubt I'm going to try to do so for MHS. I was spoken to like I was the most horrible person in the world for not wanting to be irresponsible! Roy was pushy, rude, and refused to understand my situation at all. I still plan on fostering in the future, but if this is how MHS treats people who aren't sure and actually want to give animals the best care, then I don't think I'll be involved with them. It still baffles me that Roy would try to SHAME me into fostering, even when I said I didn't think I could provide the proper care these animals needed! I understand the stress and difficulty of finding homes for animals, but this was NOT the right way to make it easier.

I felt that the staff did an excellent job the three (yes, three) different times that I went in - especially the girl with blonde hair and glasses. She actually remembered me and was very friendly and talkative. She did not put any pressure on me to purchase the dog by any means and I could tell that she genuinely loved and cared for the animals. (Side note dog was a hefty $1600.00 - but for an AKC pure bred puppy, it's at least somewhat in the ballpark). The girl allowed me to spend as much time with the dog as I wanted (store policy is that you are not allowed to pick them up, you can pet them all that you would like in one of the viewing areas). Obviously a staff member would need to stand about a foot away from me when I was interacting with the dog, but it's for security and most likely liability under their insurance I am sure - and this didn't bother me at all and I didn't find it out of the ordinary. She informed me of all of the offers that were available should I decide to purchase: $100.00 worth of items for free, warrantees for health/wellness, first vet visit was free, etc. But this employee also gave me the backstory on the business, and it doesn't sound as bad as some people are making it out to be (unless she was completely bs-ing me). The dog I was interested in looked healthy and was active - I could tell that it was being well cared for. I am hoping that he gets a deserving home and lives a long healthy life.

Basic labs were drawn, revealing a high T4 level, and so Dr. Alizaine recommended starting methimazole for hyperthyroidism. When I asked about if it could be falsely high because of her illness or if it's possible the sample wasn't handled properly (since warm samples can cause elevated T4 in bloodwork) Dr. Alizaine brushed me off completely. I asked about re-testing when she was less acutely ill and he essentially told me that to wait longer to treat was to want my cat to get sicker and sicker. And so we started treatment. A week later on a Thursday we brought kitty back in because her food intake had gone down (but still eating half her normal) and asked for more bloodwork. He said no, it's the UTI and she got bloodwork last week, sent us home. Saturday morning I wake up and kitty is YELLOW. Rushed her to the emergency vet to find her AST/ALT (liver values) are so high they can't even quantify them. A feeding tube for a month, many tears, antibiotics, and repeated inpatient hospital stays later, I'm out $17,000 and armed with the knowledge that methimazole can cause these liver damage and failure in 1-2% of cats, not that Dr. Alizaine ever mentioned this. I was quiet at this point. Medication adverse effects are a risk we have to take to treat disease. However, the last couple months we have been looking to radioactive iodine therapy for kitty's hyperthyroidism. We took her off the methimazole for labs as instructed and surprise, surprise - two entire months after being off the meds, and kitty's thyroid levels are perfect. The thyroid experts say it was probably a one-off value, maybe a lab error or a swapped sample, but not something we'll ever know. Regardless, kitty does NOT have hyperthyroidism, and good amount of my heartache and pain from last year could have been avoided or improved if Dr. Alizaine had just ordered repeat bloodwork or listened to our concerns before kitty went jaundiced. Overall, Dr. Alizaine genuinely seems to care for your pet and their health. But he does not listen to reasonable requests from the pet parents and bulldozes them into following his treatment plan without making sure it's right. Thankfully I've moved at this point, but it's safe to say I would not recommend Dr. Alizaine as a vet to anyone.
