Loved the rustic decor, and the fact that it was almost completely lit by candles. The big windows with stained glass element made the space feel open. Too bad it looked out on to Hooters. Have plenty of creative cocktails. The rose garden was my fave. Saw many other guests ordering wine too. After a good start to the night though service deteriorated and we waited 20 minutes for the server to reappear in our corner so we could ask for the bill. This is the perfect bar for a nice date! The inside is dimly lit with string lights, music level is moderate so you can talk without shouting, location is central, and the bar has a kind of low key hidden vibe. They have happy hour from 5-7 with special discounts, including their cocktail on tap. I really like how they divide their cocktails in the menu based on taste preferences. Also, not sure why, but many of their drinks were gin based. I tried a gin and rose cocktail which tasted great! Would definitely recommend this place for a romantic date! read more

Melrose on Adelaide is a new cocktail bar, having taken over the spot at 270 Adelaide where the Corned Beef House used to reside. When I walked up the stone steps into the interior my immediate first impression of Melrose was twofold: dark and loud. Not loud with the booming music of so many bars, but with the lively conversation of people filling it (it was, after all Friday night). Much like Barchef, the space is very, very dark - and initially might feel almost comically so (I saw another table reading their menus by the light of their smartphones). However, once you get adjusted to both the volume level and lighting it's less noticeable and you feel you are in a space which is both lively and intimate. The interior is much unchanged from what it used to be when it was previously the restaurant, however is awash in white and there is quite a lot of decoration in a floral motif (which I found to be tasteful and not overstated). The bar isn't overly large is lined with wooden stools and strings of lights which add to the ambiance. We didn't try any of the food, but the cocktails were quite excellent and reasonably priced. 'Spirited Away' is a herbal concoction garnished with torched rosemary; its unique flavour takes a little getting used to at first but it is deliciously medicinal after that. 'Take Me Back' seems to be a variant of Penicillin which exists at most every cocktail bar these days; I didn't taste any of the mango the menu claimed was an ingredient, but the serrano chile is definitely noticeable by the end and kicks this cocktail quite a few notches in terms of spicy zip. The Old Fashioned was the genuine article, quite serviceable with nothing fancy or pretentious added. The service was excellent, both our server and anyone who brought a drink to our table was polite, helpful, and friendly (a welcome change from some hip places where the staff are more often than not a little stand-offish). All in all, Melrose is a beautiful, intimate space and a welcome addition to Adelaide and John Street area. I think it will last, and I highly recommend it as a new spot to check out for a date or some food, cocktails, and lively conversation between friends. read more

Average and overpriced. The wine and food were good, but service was unprofessional and the outdoor seats are very uncomfortable. If you are serving a $16 glass of wine, you should probably offer your guests a chair that costs more than that. When the food arrived, the plates we received were crusted with yellow food residue. At approximately 11pm, on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2023, my partner and I attended Melrose on Adelaide. Our table had a bench on one side facing into the establishment, and a chair facing a window/wall across from the bench. My partner sat beside me, sharing the bench side of our table, such that we could both enjoy the ambiance by looking into the venue. As we chatted awaiting a server (very slow service), the hostess came over and said "You have to sit across from each other, not beside each other". When I asked "Why"? I was told "No one wants to sit beside you because you're sitting together". This was contrary to the fact that the table to our right was chosen after our arrival/decision to sit together. The hostess was completely unprofessional. Perhaps saying something, such as "Can you please sit across from one another, it's against our venue policy to share the bench" might have been less personally insulting. My partner and I are both professionals. I teach. He is an executive. He often tips upwards of 30%...definitely not the case on this occasion. My partner also happens to have two, full sleeve tattoos, beautifully done, and exposed on this day as the temperature happened to be 30+ degrees. We both felt that the rude treatment we received might have been different had his tattoos been less visible. However, I can't speak to that fact with certainty, only speculation. What I do know: * This visit was both my first, and likely last visit to this establishment. * That we were made to feel personally insulted * That the service was slow (ordering, arrival of order AND after requesting the bill from the bartender when we didn't see any servers for an extended period of time). We ended up paying with cash when we were unable to get our bill. * That I will be sure to speak to my friends, family and colleagues about the negative experience in hopes they can avoid similar treatment * My partner has taken me to MANY high end venues in Toronto over the years and this is the first negative experience we've had to date * With so many options downtown, why would anyone receiving this type of treatment choose to return? * PLEASE do better Melrose. Came here on a wednesday after work for happy hour specials and let me tell you, wednesday's are the day to come! Their charcuterie boards are on special for $20 and are delicious, and their feature cocktail for $9 (pineapple bourbon sour) when we went was a steal! Make sure you get here before 6pm as this place is PACKED by then. And while they take walk-ins, I highly recommend making a reservation if you're a group of three or more. Atmosphere is dim and intimate, not too loud, and I love the use of real candles everywhere. We didn't get the greatest seats as we sat in front of the window facing hooters, but it didn't ruin the mood. BONUS - try the shareable dip platter for $12. It comes with veggies, a plethora of crackers and croustilles, and the dips are absolutely delicious. Ours ended up being a hummus, what seemed to be a tomato chutney, and a creamier cheesy dip. Drinks (5/5): the drinks are beautiful (a shame I couldn't get a good photo due to the dim lighting). The taste was also on point! Price (3/5): standard pricing for nice bars! Ambiance (4.5/5): really nice intimate bar, great for dates. The decor is romantic and noise level isn't too loud. The only downside is that each table has a real candle (which was actually a really nice touch) but I was so worried I would burn my menu or my hair haha! We sat at the bar and enjoyed some drinks. The bartender was very kind and knowable about the drinks. Everyone around seemed to be young, maybe just getting off work, and enjoying drinks. I have seen many pictures of this place on Instagram so I decided to try it out. My boyfriend and I went to the restaurant and they seated us within 5 minutes (we had a reservation). This place I known for cool cocktails. The presentation was so pretty bit I am disappointed at the taste of them. We ordered the melrose mule, which didn't taste like a regular Moscow mule since it's their own twist (my bf was not a fan). We also ordered the spicy margarita which was waaay too spicy which my bf also did not like. I ordered the permanent vacation which I did not enjoy. However, I also got the into the rose garden which was 10/10 for presentation and tasted good. As for food, we got many appetizers such as the bruschetta, edamame, the crispy cauliflower, shrimp ajillo and spicy octopus. The edamame and shrimp were our favourite- they were amazing! The service was great- our server was friendly and attentive. I would give it a 3.7/5 stars. For a cocktail bar, the drinks could have been much better. Cool and cozy describe this place. We met a friend there for drinks and food for 6:30. It wasn't overly busy (we wanted a quiet place) and it didn't disappoint. Our server recommended a whiskey for me - Bearface and I quite enjoyed it. Drinks were good and the food was very good. It started to pick up and get busier around 9:30, but we expected that. I came early when it was still light outside for a quick drink and was surprised by how dingy the place was :( - nothing like the reviews or pictures would suggest. It had a dive bar feel but trying to be elegant with fake flowers and dusty string lights. Maybe it was the sunlight that exposed all the flaws. The drinks were also very expensive. Stopped here on our last night in Toronto and we were not disappointed. This place has the ambience down and it is truly impressive. An A+ date spot, my wife and I had one of the most Instagram worthy experiences at this little joint. The charcuterie plates are an actual work.of art and the cocktails are low-key handcraft masterpieces. We can't wait to drop by again during future visits.
