Everything about this place was so solid. The 10-20 homemade bbq sauces, the smoked wings made everybody at the table look for their jaw on the floor. All the smoked meats we had were great. We might even skip our planned fish fry to come back here tomorrow. Then the staff was just fantastic, and were very personable and able to make our entire experience very enjoyable. My husband and I stayed a night in Lebanon and were pleasantly surprised by this spot. The service was friendly and great! We only ate appetizers, but they were fresh and very good. The rest of the menu also looked good. Everyone who walked in seemed to know each other. All were happy and friendly. Definitely recommend. Despite the reviews a buddy and I tried this place while out on a motorcycle ride. First impressions were good, as we were greeted by a very friendly waitress upon entering the cool interior. There were plenty of places to sit and it wasn't crowded. The AC worked well which was greatly appreciated after several hours on a bike. The service was fast, and the food was very good. I had the cheddar bacon burger which came with some very tasty bacon on it. My buddy had the same thing, with a fried egg on top which was done correctly. We also had cheese curds to start. I am typically not a big fan of cheese curds as they tend to be a bit greasier than I like, but these were light and fluffy and I found myself snarfing them with enthusiasm. Drink refills were frequent without our needed to ask for them. On a side note. They offer a $50 burger. This isn't reflective of their prices overall, but I'd have loved to see what a $50 burger looked like! Unfortunately nobody ordered one while I was there, but it's got to be amazing at that price! read more

This was the second time dining here. The first time was excellent service and food! Server was on point and so friendly and suggested great items to try. 5-star experience. We came again today -- about a week later -- for a business lunch. Service and food very lacking. Our guest did not even eat half his burger and my husbands's chili looked old and crusty on top. Was served with no spoon and took a bit to get the necessary utensil. And to top it off, they added a credit card charge of about 5%! No way are they paying that for cc and it should be baked in as a cost of doing business. Offensive. Add the cost to the price and if you want to give a cash discount, go for it. We were the only customers at noon, so that should tell you something. The fries were great, pulled pork was ok, salad was pretty wilted & ranch dressing was like water. Husband said the same on salad & fries, his tri tip was ok. The place was clean, but the flies about carried our food off before we could eat, awful. We felt the meal was over priced for what we got. Wanted to try this place for a while. The staff was super on top of everything and very friendly. It was clean and enjoyable atmosphere. Beer and wine options are aways nice. The burger came out covered in fennel seeds which made the burger pretty much unedible. The server was not happy but without asking did take a portion off. I do plan to go back but will not order this again. Also, side note, the Chile they use comes from Colorado and not New Mexico the Chile capital. read more

My husband and I have eaten at Mel's twice in the past several weeks, and as admitted BBQ snobs from Kansas City, found the food to be pretty good. Both times, the salads were fresh, the ribs tender, the burgers juicy, and fries crisp. And both times, the service was mediocre...not bad, just not good...and almost all due to issues better training and better overall management could prevent. For example, both times our server gave us way too much info about her personal life. She complained repeatedly about how busy the restaurant was and how many customers were there. We were called "honey" and "hun" repeated by servers less than a quarter of our age (68 and not feeble!). At both visits, we requested our salads be served well in advance of our entrees. Both times our entrees were served within 3 minutes of our salads, leaving us to decide whether to allow our entrees to get cold or our salads to grow soggy. When we requested a couple of extra napkins, were handed a wad of damp, restroom-esque paper towels. (The restaurant uses cloth napkins.) And, my #1 pet peeve - servers asking "Have we decided what we're having?" or "Do we need anything else?" as if the server is part of our party. The food at Mel's on Madison is good enough that we'll probably return, but the service is irritating enough that it won't be our first choice. read more

First time to try it. Don't waste your money. Messed up my wife's meal twice. Second round, burger was still raw on a medium well request. Expected to take it home and finish it off in the oven with the meal removed from the bill. My poor wife and the other 10 people in our party had already suffered enough due to the delay of two messed up preparations. After two failures, was still told to surrender the burger or I had to pay for it. Most places would have been offering a free meal, to go bag if I wanted it and probably some more free stuff.
