Between September 30, 2025 and November 22, 2025 I spent a total of 23 days in hospital with three different admissions. My first admission was for a surgical procedure, my second was for a saddle pulmonary embolism and my third was for an UTI. I have had a number of procedures through the years at numerous hospitals, and I have to say that Sutter Memorial Modesto was one of the better experiences I've had with any of them. The staff was extremely professional and very compassionate. My time was spent divided between stays in the surgical unit 5th floor North Tower, ICU and telemetry. My surgeon was awesome (Dr. Corin). All of the hospitalists that I encountered were very professional and compassionate and the nursing staff was very competent and caring. Both the physical therapy personnel and the respiratory therapy personnel were very kind and patient with me during my recovery from the pulmonary embolism and pneumonia. The only thing that kept me from giving Sutter Memorial Modesto, a five star rating is the food. Maybe I was just there too long, but I realized quickly that the rotation of offerings to the patients was very limited as I began seeing the same dishes again and again and many of them were not very good. I was recently admitted to Sutter Memorial after an ER visit for a broken leg. Surgery was required to properly set the bone. I want to begin by saying that the medical teams who treated my injury were exceptional--ER staff, the surgeon, anesthesiologist, surgical team, and floor nurses all provided excellent care and bedside manner. Unfortunately, the case management and administrative follow‑up were the opposite: disorganized, dismissive, and lacking compassion. After the case manager's third visit, I requested reassignment because of repeated issues. During her first visit--less than a day after surgery and my first PT session--she abruptly announced she was ordering equipment. I had already discussed choosing a wheelchair with PT (insurance covers only one item), but when I tried to explain this, she cut me off and repeated, "Insurance will only cover one." When I attempted to tell her about the steps at my home and the need for a ramp, she again interrupted and said, "Insurance won't cover that, you're on your own," offering no resources or guidance. Later, while I was on the phone trying to locate a ramp myself, she stood in my room sighing and rolling her eyes. She then told me I had been discharged--even though my nurse had just started an IV for low vitamin levels, I still had two doses left, the equipment she ordered hadn't arrived, and I still had no safe way to enter my home. When she asked if I had walked yet, I reminded her I was non‑weight‑bearing for at least two months. She then asked if I had Medicare, which I do not--another sign she hadn't reviewed my chart. I told her directly that her approach felt rude, rushed, and unsafe, and asked for a different case manager. Hours later, I learned the pharmacy couldn't fill my medication because it required prior authorization. When I called the operator asking for a patient advocate, I was transferred to a non‑working extension. After calling back and explaining the urgency, I was sent to the second case manager. She cut me off immediately, said she had "just received the information," and submitted the authorization but refused to follow up to ensure it went through. When I mentioned that home health also lacked prior authorization, she admitted it hadn't been done yet. She did not address my concerns about the first case manager and abruptly ended the call. In the days since, I have repeatedly tried to reach a patient advocate. Neither the hospital operator nor the main Sutter line could provide a working number. When the operator attempted to transfer me to her manager, the call went to voicemail and disconnected mid‑message. The medical teams make Sutter look excellent, but case management and administrative systems make patients feel abandoned. These failures matter--especially when patients are in pain, scared, and relying on the hospital to ensure safe discharge planning. When healthcare systems make it this difficult to advocate for ourselves, it discourages people from seeking care at all. Sutter needs to do better. Kaiser, in my experience, is far ahead in efficiency and patient support. As one example, I was told it would take five months to see an endocrinologist for a serious genetic condition--whereas with Kaiser, specialist appointments took only a few days. read more

I don't know why that lady is even working at this hospital. she doesn't care at All for her patient. she did not care for my wife at all, and seemed bothered every time I asked her for care for my wife. read more

I am 4 days post op and passed out at home my doctor told me to go to sutter emergency room so they could see results. I have been dizzy and lightheaded and have had a horrible headache 2 days now. I have been sitting in there waiting room for 6 hours now waiting to see the doctor and was told there is still 10 people ahead of me. Nurse said they would get me Tylenol to keep up with my pain management for post care and it's been 3 hrs since may alarm went off for it. I'm supposed to pay a $150 co pay for what???? Being neglected and just left to sit and be in pain. Seeing tons of people go before me that where after me. I have open wounds on my abdomen and I'm left feeling pain and weak. I normally don't leave reviews, but this really concerned me. I've been to the Sutter ER three days in a row and each visit I notified staff/security that there was visible dried blood on the women's restroom door. Three days later it was still there. For a hospital -- especially one caring for pregnant and postpartum patients -- that's not just unpleasant, it's a sanitation and infection-control issue. The medical staff I interacted with were polite, but the cleanliness and follow-through were honestly disappointing. I hope management addresses housekeeping and patient safety concerns because this shouldn't require multiple reports from patients to get cleaned. read more

Just moved to the area from the coast. I thought our old ER wait time was bad. Sutter tops it. Had chest pain and arm throbbing. Went to ER around 6:30PM waited in lobby till 5:45AM to be seen by a doctor. Never saw him. I left! Luckily felt a bit better. Plus was able to see my EKG results on the app. No issues that I could interpret. At least not heart related. While I was waiting I saw tons of people that looked extremely ill and waiting just as long to be seen. Felt more bad for them than me. There was a baby crying and kids just extremely fussy and tired. No different from other ERs but except for the wait. I am use to waiting 2-3 hours on a busy day but 6-9 hrs is excessive and dangerous. Can't say much of the care I received because it was hardly any. Definitely not coming here for any emergency needs. Prefer to drive 3 hrs back to the coast and be seen there. read more

Staff was very nice. There a lot of seats available. They separated those with flu like/rsv to one area and others to another area. They have masks available. It's a pretty packed place. My husband went in for a snowboarding accident and it took almost 7 hours to see the actual doctor. This was 7 hours after his CT scan. Thankfully nothing was wrong but we wished someone would have relayed that information to us quicker. We could see on his medical app that his scans were fine and of course we waited to see the doctor. The doctor was very kind and attentive. read more

The most aggressive and unprofessional rude doctors I've ever encountered!! Not long ago my grandmother had to get stitches and one of the doctors at the emergency room were asked by her if she could get bandages, the doctor literally just gave a dirty look and said "not my patient not my problem"!! Sadly not only that but she had been there again recently and the doctors tried to evade her case of medical assistance by just giving her the same medication that she had just gotten high blood pressure from without even analyzing her medical history to see what the problem is!! Refused to perform ligation on hemorrhoids that they discovered when I went in for an explanation as to why I kept bleeding every time I went to the bathroom. I DEMANDED this procedure multiple times and was told it was "too extreme" despite having informed the doctor that I was already experiencing a prolapse. Am now experiencing complications that I intend to address with a malpractice suit once my current doctor is able to fix me. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. My husband took me to the ER at Memorial Hospital around 12:30am and the waiting room was full I checked in for a severe migraine headache with nausea and vomiting and I had fallen a couple hours before that caused me to have a big hematoma on the right side of my head which caused my blood pressure to get elevated. We waited for almost 2 hours and still didn't even get triaged. Finally after 2 hours of waiting I asked a nurse about how much longer before I can atleast get triaged and he informed me that there's still atleast 6 people still waiting for atleast 3 plus hours just to get triaged and that's why I decided to just leave. I completely understand that it's the emergency room and serious issues are always coming in but that doesn't mean that the patients who are waiting to be triaged have to wait for multiple hours and then just leave before they even get a chance to see a doctor. I've worked as a nurse and fully understand and appreciate the hardship of the work environment but I think that if some of the nurses and doctors spent less time discussing their lives and weekend plans and maybe think about the patients that will help too. I keep saying that I'm never going to go back to memorial er but unfortunately and my bad luck that I ended up going. The care and concern really needs to change and when they say that they care about the patients and their wellbeing they prove it because right now it seems like that the higher ups in memorial hospital are just concerned about filling their pockets over patients and their lives. read more

11 hours in the ER! There are 25-30 nurses running around helping patients and not enough doctors in the ER ! First couple hours did blood work was told not to eat or drink anything in case doctor wants to do test after 6th hour blood pressure starts to drop nurse says I will let doctor know about this...by the 10th hour nurse said you are next and by the 11th hour nurse said now there is 6 patients in front of you ... I left and received medical assistance somewhere else with being severely dehydrated and finding out it was Nora virus so hopefully after puking and diarrhea nobody else in er was infected after 11 hours! read more

I was transferred from my wonderful tracy location due do the procedure i needed. Tiny shared room, they let like 7 ppl in for the roomate i had no privacy. They finally fixed my drapes after 3 hours. Day nurses rock ! Very helpful. Night nurse horrible! Forgot everything always left lights on always left curtains open took forever to aswer call button . I will try to avoid coming here. We waited a total of 8 hours. Why? Because they didn't know why the lab was taking so long for my baby's results. Did they bother to check? No. I get it, it's ER, it was a full house when I came in with my baby. I work in the ER, I have patience. We were finally seen by the assisting nurse at the 4-hour mark, they did a swab, gave her Buprenorphine and then we waited another 2 hours until I asked if we could go home. The triage nurse asked me to wait to check with a doctor. And, finally, he said, the doctor will do the exam to make sure she's OK to go home. OK, but we waited another 1hr. At this point the lobby was clear, everyone behind me in line when I came in, was gone. When we finally saw the doctor, she said "Not sure why the lab is taking so long, should have been quick and called you up in line." Well, that wasn't the case. 8hrs though? And, we were skipped many times. I cried for my baby's pain and uncomfortably during that wait. I just moved to Modesto. I have been to the ER twice in my life. In August, family convinced me to go to the ER because I had some things going on. From check in to check out everything was a class act. Every single employee I encountered was efficient, friendly and explained everything thoroughly. I ended up having to go back a week later for a second blood transfusion and then had major surgery. Each return was even better than the first. I'm still impressed. So thank you to every staff member, Dr, nurse, phlebotomist.... You all saved my life and did it with the upmost of care and class. On Sep. 2, Thomas was admitted as a trauma patient in the hospital. Had a neck operation because of neck injury from the car accident. Someone took his wallet and now we are having a difficulty replacing the Medicare card, ssn card, medical card, other insurance card, and his ID. I finally had to call in to see if we could get a copy of his ID so we can get it replaced at DMV. At first Showanda said she will put me on hold to research then hanged up on me. Kath said she will help but indeed up saying we have to file a police report because they cannot give us a copy of the ID. The wallet was lost in the hospital and they do not want to give a copy of the ID so we cannot get Thomas narco rx and today he cannot have the x-ray because no ins and ID card. I reported a loss report with their security. I ask Kath to transfer me to a manager and she transferred me to billing instead and told me that Denise is the manager. Denise said she in billing. This is not a good hospital to be in when you have trauma because they will loss your belonging.​ read more

Staff are friendly, however, the wait time is beyond ridiculous. 8hrs in the waiting room. I was told 4 people were ahead of me and still waited 4 hours after. Unfortunately, I will not be back. They make sure they do vitals and bloodwork right away claim they provided service to your insurance although you may never be seen for the reason it recorded results. They provide norco and walk around checking vitals just to keep patient's distracted with the ridiculously long wait. read more

I had one of the absolute worst experiences of my life at this emergency room. I was taken by ambulance to the hospital due to a fall, dislocating my arm from my shoulder. For anyone who has had a dislocated shoulder, you know the excruciating pain this causes. I was given a bed in the ER, where I waited in horrific pain for six hours before a doctor redacted my arm, which took less than twenty minutes. After crying, begging and pleading for help, at hour six I was finally given some morphine, reluctantly, I might add. One nurse even implied that I dislocated my arm in order to get narcotics. At one point the doctor, Richard Jong Hyun came in the room, grabbed my arm and violently pushed and pulled on it. He said, "Yup, it's dislocated." This was before an xray which would have told him everything he needed to know without hurting me. I didn't see him again until he gave me propranolol and redacted my shoulder, as I said, hours later. Then the lousy nursing care. They act like their butts are glued to their chairs. With the exception of the last nurse they sent me, who couldn't quite grasp that I have multiple sclerosis and severe scoliosis which has caused me such severe weakness I'm classified as a hemiplaegic. She thought if she shouted at me loudly enough she could make me do things I wasn't capable of. I kept asking her to stop yelling at me, but she called herself a "proud daughter of a marine." The whole episode was like a scene from "The Cukoos Nest" seriously. (Think Nurse Ratchet). I have had bad experiences in ER's before, but if I were you, I would go anywhere but that Bedlam if I had a choice. This is lousy medical care, if you could call it that. Yikes!!! read more

I would avoid this ER at all costs - especially if you are pregnant. I would go anywhere else and drive further just to get somewhere else because the experience I had here was one of the worst experiences of my life. 1. I am an RNx20+ years, 14 in Cardiac ICU, 4 years as a Professor of Critical Care. 2. I didn't tell any of the staff of my work experience, I kept my mouth shut and let them do their jobs. I don't flash my badge around, looking for special treatment because that's lame AF. So I went in this AM for an outpatient scheduled Cardiac procedure with Dr. Dubey in the Interventional Radiology department. Everyone from the dude who patchly (is this a word idk?) shaved my chest (I don't mind that you completely ignored my right nipple bro) to every single one of the RNs and staff I encountered was top-shelf professional and adroit at their jobs. I have been on both ends of the stethoscope for many years now and honest talk you can tell what medical staff are just there for a paycheck and those that love what they do, helping and serving others. With masks on, you can see it in the eyes who has passion for what they do and who cares and to be honest it's an impossible job that looks easy but you people have no idea what goes into every single thing they do. I was very impressed with the care I received and admired their camaraderie' and compassion/empathy, always making sure my needs were met. They also fixed my cardiac issue, which is fkn awesome.
