I don't visit often as I live 1/2-mi from Target & Menards is 6-mi up the road, so I stay closer for convenience & slightly lower prices. I probably visit once every 3-mos. Pros: * Big selection of products, great quality. * Good deals on clearance items. Some are well hidden, like discounted rugs around the corner on end caps, so ensure you walk around the dept to check for discounted items. * Lots of parking, wider spots to accommodate trucks. Be careful as you'll always encounter guys loading their trucks & barreling through the parking lot with large dollies. Cons: * As with other stores, if you check a product online & find it's in stock, it may not be. I find that 100% of the time. * It's challenging to find an employee to help find an item & when I have found someone, they are annoyed that I asked. Why? It's your JOB. And, why is it that stockers always look so dang miserable? I used to work retail & liked stocking as a break from routine. Still, you chose the job, lose the attitude. Good to Know: * Some things are way too pricey (like furniture & seasonal items like Christmas trees), but the quality is good. With the food & personal care aisles, their prices are often more than grocery stores, so choose carefully. Their cleaning products are often better priced than other stores. * Returns are easy & right inside the door to the left, but there's usually a line, so if you're pressed for time, wait... don't plan on being in & out in 5-min. It's a good store but I just rarely find what I need. Then again, I'm not looking for Home Depot type building items, just household things. Great place to pick up Era cheap! Also has some decent deals on landscaping materials. We have purchased plenty of lumber from here to do several decks/stairs during remodeling. Some of the brands carried here are on the cheaper side. Definitely consider buying more well-known brands from Menards if you're interested in longevity and durability. If you're in the yard picking up items that are stored outside, be careful! Workers are helpful and offer to help get things from high spaces or new pallets. read more

Menards is a good place to shop 4 lots of different things in my case I look for their soil they have a great soil mix that includes Peat that I've been finding that's been very nice for the garden... They also have a great selection of inexpensive Rock that you can use in landscaping and coca leaves if you use such things for your garden... They have great tools at fair prices for home repair or projects. I really like the ones on Southwest 14th and have found that they have really some of the best customer service out of anyone that I've been to... I shop there for specific things and not for everything... At this time of year you can find incredible bargains for summer related projects as they begin to clear their summer stuff out for winter. I had an issue with a large order for a barn I am building which I bought materials for July last year (and am building this year). Love me some Menards! My go-to store for most household goods and gardening supplies. It's also becoming my choice of store for personal hygiene items, and sometimes even groceries, as well. The prices for those items at Menards are comparable to, and a lot of times beat, Walmart's prices. And you don't get the zoo-like atmosphere of Walmart. We go here for most, if not all, of our home improvement needs. They have competitive prices and plenty of selection. I LOVE the rebate program! I have and use a Menards Big Card for all my purchases to earn an extra 2% rebate on top of sale and rebate prices. The staff is always helpful. If you can't find something, they don't just tell you where it is, they walk WITH you and lead you right to what you're looking for. Nice extra effort that a lot of stores don't provide. Home Depot and Menards in my opinion are pretty interchangeable stores. Other than their interior decor, the products and staff are nearly the same. There are definitely products you may only find in one store or the other, but nothing that is significant enough to mention. This is only applies if you are looking for a specific item. The Home Depot and Menards in Des Moines and Ankeny are right next to each other, so if you are not satisfied with one you can go to the other with no hassle. the cheap prices are the only thing this store has going for it, however the lack of customer service has gotten to the point I will pay more and shop at Lowes. I had 10 1x4x8 foot boards in my arms and was setting them on one of the lumber carts, I didn't notice one of the rails on the cart was missing, all the board cascaded to the floor, an employee watched this happen and walked away as I was picking them up. another came by pointed and said something to the one walking away and they then bot walked away. This is the second incident, I tried to utilize Menards price match policy and was unsuccessful, they would only match the price on the appliances I was buying to the extent of adding back on the rebate amount. I had to also have the ads for the appliances, which clearly states on Menard's web site you don't need. I went and spent the $3600 for the stove and fridge at Home Depot instead. read more

I visited the store on SE 14th this morning to get help ordering some plumbing fixtures I need. I would have purchased them on-line but I wanted to use a rebate coupon. I am a senior citizen and have difficulty walking so I decided to stop at the customer service desk to see if they could help. I met Tracy S and explained my situation to her. She entered the items I needed (I had brought copies of the items with SKU and Model numbers from the on-line check out with me) and proceeded to get the items on order. She was also able to get me credit for the rebate coupons. I was able to get everything done with barely walking in the front door! I wish Menard's had a place on their website to write comments and reviews and I hope that someone in management at this store takes notice of this. This and Home Depot are the closest home improvement stores to my house. I prefer menards because of the constant sales and promotions they have. The staff is USUALLY very friendly. Love the paint team! I keep receipts for everything so making returns and price adjustments are easy. They allow 2 weeks for any price adjustment. A little frustrated about how the store credit system works but no complaints outside of that. read more

We are here just about every weekend! I love this place because any other menards you go in, 80% of the time, everything is in the same place. Gotta love the consistency. This is in regard to Menards rebate program, after months of waiting and phone calls to the store on why I had not received my rebate I got it. FYI the rebate looks like Junk mail, it has no reference to Menards on the post card size mailing. I would like to provide a picture of it but it does not appear yelp will allow that. It reads. MASTERCRAFT THE BEST DOORS MONEY CAN BUY! Open to Learn Why With a picture of a door. I think Menards does this to not pay them out knowing they will get treated as Junk mail. I would like to know how many rebate $$ get issued and how many $$ get redeemed. As this is an in store credit, they could issue a store credit gift card at the point of sale if they really waited the customer to have the rebate. read more

Well, I just scored two 29" walnut finished wooden bar stools for $25 each on sale. I picked up this Sunday paper and found this bargain which is rare in my experience. I usually go to Lowe's and Home Depot on the east coast so I didn't know how this would work out. Well, the Des Moines store is huge and I had to ask staff for help. The people here are great and very helpful. You need to go early in the morning because when I got there, there were only two bar stools in the style that I liked. There were also floor samples already assembled but I don't know if Menard's sell them (maybe a little extra). I went home and put it together which turned out fine. Just be gentle because some parts may fit a little tight while others are loose. There are 3 other locations in the Des Moines area. I tried the Ankeny store which is pretty much the same but further away from me. Also, you should try and avoid the mail-in rebates since it's a pain in the butt to go to customer service and find the right form on a wall with hundred different rebate forms. Plus, a huge hassle to wait for a rebate check in the mail for at least 1-2 months. Also, Menard's does not accept American Express but accept others- Discover, Visa, and Mastercard. read more

Then, he took me to another department where the employee couldn't seem to move to help me find my item. Between the 2 of them, they caused me to write a negative review. okay miss ma'am let me tell you something... theres a "back the blue" sign in the garden section. you cant back the blue, they're just people in uniforms. this is why home depot is better than you. maybe instead of back the blue you should make a blm matter sign because this is more important than keeping people safe that are in a uniform. like 40 hours a week. also a worker punched me and then threw me across the store. this is absolutely unacceptable and you guys should be ashamed. home depot is better. read more
