Staff were very helpful and super nice. As soon as I entered I was asked if I needed help. Another later asked what I was looking for and then took me to where it was and gave me good details on the options there. As I was heading to check out, there was about 4 people in line at the 1 check out. Someone promptly came out and apologized for any wait and opened another check out which was hardly necessary. Very nice as I was checking out. Honestly the best service I've ever found at any store. Awesome staff. I drove an hour and 45 minutes from Point Arena to get supplies. When I got there, the supplies that they said that they had were not in stock. Came here to do a rewire of our washing machine. Employee showed us all that we would need and exactly how to do it, you don't get that at the big box hardware place. I don't normally go to Mendo Mill for anything but I had to stop in and grab a much needed item for work. I was greeted by the 4 employees I passed on my trip through the store. One gave me directions to the item I needed and one I passed further in actually walked me to the item I needed. I was very impressed by the friendliness and helpful attitude of the employees. The store selection is slightly limited and the prices are a little higher but I will go back because of the positive treatment I received. read more

Mendo Mill is the kind of hardware store my soul yearns for - mostly. They have a surprisingly large and really great selection, not just wood and nails, and general construction materials, but they also carry a wide range of household goods ranging from brooms to pots and pans and beyond. Their selection of adhesives is the best in the valley. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like many of the employees there are very happy. The older ones look like alcoholics or have shrill, stressed voices, and the younger ones look like they're getting the short end of the stick. So, while I prefer going there to, say, Home Depot, where there isn't the slightest possibility of having my questions answered, it does make me uncomfortable to go in there, and I prefer to go to Ukiah Valley Lumber if what I need is in their inventory. read more

I want to like this store, really I do. But I'm disappointed every time I shop there. Mendo Mill has 'special sales' all the time. Every other weekend or so there will be a 20% discount off of some department within the store. Unfortunately the discount is almost always wrong at checkout. The receipt they print doesn't show the regular price, just the discounted price. The cashiers are clueless and do not understand when you explain that you've been overcharged. They just keep repeating 'that's the price in the computer and there's nothing I can do'. Even with a discount, the identical item is still less $$$ at Home Depot in Ukiah. Out of convenience/laziness I attempted to purchase a couple of items this afternoon. There were three registers open with four people in line ahead of me. One of the registers was handling a return or something else that was confusing to the cashier. One of the other two cashiers abruptly closed her register - even after a manager/supervisor asked her to stay open until the 'rush' was over. That was enough for me, I left my items behind and drove the mile or so to Home Depot where I found both better and cheaper replacements - and no line to checkout. read more

I like the convenience, but am put off by the incompetence and lack of customer service that is evident in other local building supplies. the hours of operation are nowhere to be found on the official website. my dealings with returns have been time-consuming (all experienced by homeowners, especially if you are the contractor), and frustrating. They try to be streamlined with headsets and the such, but it doesn't beat having real-time info from the internet and adjustment from every employee that is currently working. So this is strictly for the Lakeport store: my husband has physical limitations, which is made clear if you observe him walking even just a foot or two. He asks Casey (employee) where the Round up is. Casey points in the general direction but does not offer to help him locate it. My husband is resourceful and finds what he is looking for. Goes up to the cash register and stands in line with several other people for like 20 minutes while he watches several employees chit chat. One woman bypasses the check out line and goes to customer service where they proceed to check her out. No one says anything to the several people in line. Then when it's finally my husband's turn to check out, he asks for a raincheck on the sale item for the Roundup, which was supposed to be buy 1, get 1 free and he got the last container. The checker calls Casey who doesn't come and doesn't come and doesn't come because he's still chit chatting with another employee, looking my husband and the checker in the eye as he stands there talking. Finally he comes and says no raincheck because he has to call the warehouse first to make sure they still have some to sell. I've never heard of that before and all of the other Mendo Mill stores have always issued rainchecks on sale items when they sell out. Apparently not Lakeport. Casey says it's going to take at least 5 minutes to figure this out. My husband is now in pain from standing so long so he says no thank you and I promise you I will not be returning to this store. Casey says "Fine then, don't!". Wow, really? I know in my heart of hearts that general and store management would not be happy to know this occurred and someone needs to have a conversation with Casey about customer service. read more

I prefer to shop local, so I do support Mendo Mill, but I miss the Ukiah Valley lumber operation. Mendo is far better then Friedman's.

My go-to hardware store. Employees are always willing to help with my oddball requests. Nice local business!

I have shopped at Mendo Mill for over 30 years, They have always given me there best. If I need anything they are right there, I really do not know why anyone would go any were else. read more
