Before going, I checked the menu online and did not see anything clearly stating that there was a 20-skewer minimum in order to order skewers. When I tried to order 10, the server abruptly told me there was a 20-skewer minimum, which was surprising and frustrating as a solo diner. The bigger issue was the actual dining experience. Since this is a grill-your-own place, I wanted to cook the skewers at my own pace. The server repeatedly told me to put more skewers on the grill, and at one point put skewers on the grill herself. I understand she seemed busy and overwhelmed since it looked like only she and a trainee were working, but it still felt invasive and stressful. I did not want everything cooking at the same time, and I would have preferred to be left alone to manage my own food. The payment experience was also awkward. The tip screen options were 18%, 21%, or no tip, with no 15% option, and I felt rushed without much time to calculate my own amount. My first experience with Mongolian food. We entered the restaurant and they switched on the heat. Probably we were the first customers of the day. It was 10 degrees Fahrenheit outside. We kept on our jackets. They served some peanuts and lukewarm green tea. Frankly we could not understand the menu and the waiters did not understand English. But anyway we managed to order Mala chicken, cumin lamb and garlic beans. Truth be told they all tasted good. Probably will try some Mongolian food again in a warmer atmosphere. read more

Meng Gao Yang is a no-frills, Northern Chinese skewer place off of Rt 27. Easily missed, it's tucked next to a tire shop, away from the H-Mart Plaza crowds, so seating is easy to get on a Saturday evening, compared to busy nearby skewer restaurant, Tonight Kabab. What makes Meng Gao Yang stand out among other restaurants serving Chinese skewers is their grilling mechanism on every table, which automatically cooks and rotates your skewers over charcoals in front of you, allowing an even grill. We loved the ability to take our skewers off when we wanted, so that the meat was cooked to our preferred level of doneness. The seasoning on the skewers themselves was okay, nothing spectacular, but they make up for it by also giving you a plate of their delicious cumin spice mix to dip your food in. There were a few communication issues, as the employee who served us didn't speak much English. It's understandable-- much of their customer base seemed to speak Chinese, and anyway I find that some of the best Chinese restaurants in this area are the ones that aren't English friendly! Plus their menu had pictures for everything so we just pointed to what we wanted. However, I wish we could comment on their other food, but when we came and tried to order some vegetables and other hot dishes, the employee told us that nothing else was available but the skewers. This eliminated half of their menu! I was shocked and pretty disappointed, considering we came at a peak dinner time-- 7pm on a Saturday evening. Also looking around us, we saw other customers with some non-skewer dishes, but I would like to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and believe that they just ran out of those right before we got there... Still, Meng Gao Yang merits another visit, as we did prefer our perfectly cooked skewers compared to the often overdone skewers of their nearby competitors. She also refilled our spice mix regularly, which is one of my favorite parts about eating here. My only complaint is that the tea canisters get REALLY hot. We started with a glass noodle salad, which is served cold and vinegary. We always order the signature lamb skewers and the xinjiang lamb skewers, but we can never agree on which one we like more! I ordered a good amount of skewers and although some were "spicy", they were actually very mildly spicy. Also, the seasoning is so so good (fyi It's not that spicy at all). The meat cooked nicely and evenly (because they rotate), and you can take them off the grill depending on how cooked you want your meats to be. Located next door to a tire shop, Meng Gao Yang is definitely an "if you know, you know type of place" It's a no frills place where the food is really reasonable for the price and absolutely delicious. I love Chinese skewers, but never had them where I bbq'd it myself. Order whatever you like and they'll come up and fill the rectangular hole with some water. Next, wait for them to bring a box of charcoal that they'll put over the water. Put your skewers on and voila, you should have tasty meat in minutes. I loved the lamb skewers the most and topped with the spicy dry rub, it is the most heavenly taste ever. I'm drooling just thinking about it lol. We also ordered the lamb and fish tofu skewers. I came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon with a group of 5 people. The place had more seating than I expected. You could bring large groups here. We ordered a bunch of meat skewers: signature lamb, Xinjiang lamb, beef tripe, beef tendon, and pork intestine. We also ordered the sweet and sour crispy pork and the potato pancakes. The skewers were delicious and I really liked that the grill automatically rotated the skewers. You can also add as much spices to the skewers and cook it to your liking. A fun little place for Northeastern Chinese/Korean food. The skewers were good, the grilled squid was delicious, and the 夫妻肺片 was my favorite! The potato pancakes were good too but they were even tastier after dipping them in the grilled squid sauce. Such a cool experience, shows that this place has great potential. The location is pretty cool, the method of cooking is amazing. But the service is what throws it all off. The staff is not really helpful in terms of translations or assisting with what to order. WOW I wish I discovered this place sooner! Arrived around 5pm thinking I was just going to get a couple skewers and only give the place a "try" BUT fell in love with how tender the meat is!! The lady running the place is super kind, comes around often to check how you're doing and help you with the meats in case it's your first time and can't tell if they are done (oops). Portions "seem" big with 10 skewers per order, but the size of the actual skewers are pretty small. If I had come when I was hungrier, I could see the price of the meal rising fairly quickly. What to order? You can't go wrong with the Lamb and Beef skewers - so delicious!! They come with a sort of dry seasoning that you can dip, or you can choose to eat them as-is. Check in on Yelp and receive free little dessert buns drizzled with condensed milk (childhood favorite)!! Also loved the little grilling contraption that you use during the meal! being chinese i grew up eating skewers! i LOVE skewers! 8th ave sunset park used to have the best ones! can't say that they're good anymore though after the unfortunate passing of the owner of the stand. this place has a good amount of options for skewers and comes with the spices on the side so you could add more to your skewers. the food itself is pretty good too. but be warned that almost everything is spicy so if you can't take spice then this place is probably not for you. (it's not even that spicy) - but my mom can't handle spice and she was dying 2 cons about this place: 1. the service. the service here lacks. it's 2 mandarin speaking ladies - so knowing mandarin helps. if not service is just not great. 2. the grill in my photo is how we cook the meats and it rotates it's so cool! but only the middle ones cook the ends don't but that cud be because the coal wasn't hot enough maybe? they only refilled it once. overall though i would come back for this unique experience and good food read more
