    Chicken wings and Chicken Gizzards
    Brittany D.

A great option for those that love BBQ and are looking for something new to try. Our favorite meat was the lamb skewers and chicken wings. The spicy rice cakes with cheese were our favorite side dish. We enjoyed the green beans, shrimp fried rice, pork fried rice, beef skewers and cucumbers. It is a cozy restaurant but can fit groups of 6 and 8. The servers show you how to properly cook your food if you're a first timer.

I first heard about this restaurant as a suggestion when discussing what to eat. We went as neither of us ever tried Mongolian BBQ before so the attention was grabbed by that. The food was just okay. None of it was bad, but not much has me mouth watering for more. We got a mix of beef, lamb, and chicken skewers. My favorite was definitely the beef as it was well seasoned and cooked well on the rolling conveyor belt they had set up. I might just not be a BBQ fan as I just got tired of eating the meats. You should also order rice or some other entree to eat with your skewered meat. I would say the service was very comforting. I went on a not so busy day, where no one else was in the restaurant. It was just the cook who I didn't see and the old lady waiting on the tables. Very kind and not invasive with asking if you need anything. It's hard to rate a restaurant like this because I wasn't crazy about eating here but also the people running it are good people. I say consider it, maybe you'll like it more than I did. If I was to describe this to anyone, the word pleasant comes to mind.

My friends and I decided to scour Edison's asian restaurants everytime we have a catch up session. We are happy to have found this little gem! Meng Gao Yang is a small restaurant in Edison and the ambiance feels very homey instead of commercial. I think it's because it's easy to tell it is being managed by a small family. But let's talk about the food because we were blown away by the options in the menu. We decided to order different meat skewers to bbq and a few appetizers. We tried the pork intestines, gizzards, pork skewers, beef skewers and they were all so good. My favorite was the Spicy fried rice cake. The flavor has the perfect balance of sweetness and spice! I can't wait to go back just for this alone! I highly recommend this place!

Definitely the best skewer place you'll find around central Jersey! Unexpectedly, the sweet and sour pork is definitely the star dish in the restaurant, especially if you are a fan of crispy batter and just the right bite of pork~ It's a very clean set up in the restaurant and the skewers are definitely well seasoned. I don't always get the lamb in case the meat is gamey, but these lamb skewers were delicious.

Love that they have a vent right above the grill so you don't smell like BBQ when you leave!

Definitely not much to the ambience and a bit hidden behind a car shop but if you're craving good Mongolian BBQ check this place out! All the dishes we had were excellent and it's BYOB. I love that they have a vent right above the grill so you don't smell like BBQ when you leave! Downside is it was pretty cold and wasn't the nicest inside. Also the service is not the friendliest but the food makes this place worth it for me.

Meng Gao Yang is a no-frills, Northern Chinese skewer place off of Rt 27. Easily missed, it's tucked next to a tire shop, away from the H-Mart Plaza crowds, so seating is easy to get on a Saturday evening, compared to busy nearby skewer restaurant, Tonight Kabab. What makes Meng Gao Yang stand out among other restaurants serving Chinese skewers is their grilling mechanism on every table, which automatically cooks and rotates your skewers over charcoals in front of you, allowing an even grill. We loved the ability to take our skewers off when we wanted, so that the meat was cooked to our preferred level of doneness. The seasoning on the skewers themselves was okay, nothing spectacular, but they make up for it by also giving you a plate of their delicious cumin spice mix to dip your food in. There were a few communication issues, as the employee who served us didn't speak much English. It's understandable-- much of their customer base seemed to speak Chinese, and anyway I find that some of the best Chinese restaurants in this area are the ones that aren't English friendly! Plus their menu had pictures for everything so we just pointed to what we wanted. However, I wish we could comment on their other food, but when we came and tried to order some vegetables and other hot dishes, the employee told us that nothing else was available but the skewers. This eliminated half of their menu! I was shocked and pretty disappointed, considering we came at a peak dinner time-- 7pm on a Saturday evening. Also looking around us, we saw other customers with some non-skewer dishes, but I would like to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and believe that they just ran out of those right before we got there... Still, Meng Gao Yang merits another visit, as we did prefer our perfectly cooked skewers compared to the often overdone skewers of their nearby competitors. We hope that on our next visit the rest of their menu will be ready to order, so that we can give their other dishes a shot.

My family and I have been here so many times, and we've loved every meal. It's always so much fun watching the meat rotate as the drippings hit the coals! The restaurant is very clean, and the server is also very kind. She was very knowledgeable about all the skewers and helped us choose an appropriate amount. She also refilled our spice mix regularly, which is one of my favorite parts about eating here. My only complaint is that the tea canisters get REALLY hot. We started with a glass noodle salad, which is served cold and vinegary. We always order the signature lamb skewers and the xinjiang lamb skewers, but we can never agree on which one we like more! The signature skewers are a little spicier, and we love how the freshness of the lamb comes through in the xinjiang skewers. We also usually get the pork intestine skewers (these are super fatty and delicious!). This is one of our favorite restaurants to eat at since everything is delicious and it's very interactive!

    Dry pot
    Angelo B.

Need to update my rating to 3 stars. The skewers are actually a bit worse than before. Still fairly tiny and meat quality mediocre. Minimal flavor. It's just not worth the current prices. Dry pot was extremely salty. I had to eat it with rice (which I usually avoid) just to offset the salt. The sauce had a semi weird flavor too. It seemed to have a lot more veggies than protein. Service is still just as slow if not slower than before.

Seasoning with the meat (not really spicy)
    Amanda L.

I lovedd the food and the experience at this restaurant! It is slightly hidden from view (behind an auto shop) but I'm so glad that I found it! I ordered a good amount of skewers and although some were "spicy", they were actually very mildly spicy. Also, the seasoning is so so good (fyi It's not that spicy at all). The meat cooked nicely and evenly (because they rotate), and you can take them off the grill depending on how cooked you want your meats to be. However, I don't think you will be full just by eating the skewers so I recommend either getting some rice or another dish!

Located next door to a tire shop, Meng Gao Yang is definitely an "if you know, you know type of place" It's a no frills place where the food is really reasonable for the price and absolutely delicious. I love Chinese skewers, but never had them where I bbq'd it myself. Order whatever you like and they'll come up and fill the rectangular hole with some water. Next, wait for them to bring a box of charcoal that they'll put over the water. Put your skewers on and voila, you should have tasty meat in minutes. I loved the lamb skewers the most and topped with the spicy dry rub, it is the most heavenly taste ever. I'm drooling just thinking about it lol. We also ordered the lamb and fish tofu skewers. I would pass on the fish tofu since it's not super flavorful. I highly recommend focusing on the skewers for a great experience. Would definitely come back here again!

    Lamb and beef skewers

The skewers are amazing! They are already seasoned but they also give you a different seasoning on a small plate. The sides are also great. I don't have a picture but the green beans are really good and I recommend. The standout of this restaurant is that you can cook the skewers yourself at the table. The machine rotates it back and forth so you don't have to babysit them and they cook evenly Pricing is also highly reasonable. They're 17.smth for 10 skewers, so it comes out to about $1.50 probably the biggest deal in the area Underrated edison W protect family owned places from gentrification

Came here after a whole day of outdoors climbing. The food in here is amazing. You order which set of skewers you want to self BBQ and DIY. A major disadvantage is the grill space is very small and it could only fit 8-10 skewers making the whole experience slow and tedious. I almost died of hunger The skewers were well made, but they were a bit tiny in terms of portion. We ordered lamb, chicken livers, intestine, tofu, beef, and other. The fried buns were delicious. The veggies dishes that we ordered were all delicious and awesome If I were the restaurant owner I would increase the size of the grill. This would definitely help out in cooking faster

Supposedly this is a Northeastern Chinese place, and I'm originally from that region. It's quite good, authentic. The interior also makes me feel like home. Been there a couple of times and it has ever really disappointed me. Recommended

Is this place still open? I went there two times last month but it was closed at both times. I also saw a fire department notice on the door.

Meng Gao Yang will officially be up and running as of 10/19/2018!

The service is very friendly and patient (and American friendly). The food comes out lightning fast. Everything is very reasonably priced. Best of all, it's all delicious. I tried stuff outside of my comfort zone and I loved it all. The golden lava buns were sweet and rich and perfect for dessert.

We were second standing outdoors waiting in this big fat long line. Immediately upon opening for the day the line nearly forced entry near stampede and this cafe was immediately packed to full occupancy of patrons with free seating. The Yelp reviews are accurate and truthful. The food is great. This is a small cafe with only approximately eight tables. I do not recommend large parties of five and greater. It is no-frills, but not exactly "hole in the wall" type that lack in aesthetics for upscale lavish atmosphere but the deficiency is resolved in the food quality. There is one sole functioning restroom in the whole business, ergo, stand in line and wait. We entered hungry in a lugubrious sense of deep sorrow, but exited hunger pangs fulfilled. When exiting upon completion of our lunch meal, there was a line that quickly formed outdoors waiting. Unfortunately, access to this cafe in Edison, NJ is by car only and there is a free parking lot that is shared with neighboring businesses located in a small shopping complex. There are no business cards, and no takeout menus available. Customer service is efficient as the staff worked methodically hustling busy to take orders and fulfillment. Our male waiter was attentive to respond to our inquiries and make suggestions based on our desires. I was able to keep the sales receipt. Price is in the rationale realm of stagflation totaling $41.75. Nota Bene: No table hibernation as the table turnover is fast pace with a line overflowing outdoors which cannot interrupt the flow. My foodie synopsis: Pork steam soup dumplings, 6 pcs, siu2 lung4 baau1, 小籠包, $8.75 Very juicy, flavorful and great. It was served piping hot. This is my favorite default dish for every visit at any Shanghainese ethnic cuisine. However, there were no serving tongs provided for this particular appetizer which is industry standard. Preserved cabbage with pork noodle soup, syut3 coi3 juk6 si1 min6, 雪菜肉絲麵 $9.50 This is a satisfying Chinese comfort food. This noodle soup was abundant with noodles, pork and chopped vegetables. It provided warmth to my very broken heart. Shanghai chicken in wine sauce, zeoi3 gai1, 醉雞, $8.95 A traditional Chinese cold appetizer, aka Chinese Drunken chicken made with Chinese Shaoxing cooking wine. It has amazing flavor and texture to be deliciously enticing. Of course, the cooking wine brings flavor to this appetizer making you want more. Shanghai pan fried U-Don noodle, soeng6 hoi2 cou1 caau2 min6, 上海粗炒面, $11.95 Abundant noodles with good consistency and it not heavily filled with grease and oil.

We got the pork sticky rice shumai, pork in garlic sauce over rice, sautéed string beans and pepper corn chicken. Shumai was ok. The pork in garlic sauce had way too much sauce and was a tad sweet for our liking; it was drowning in sauce. The strings and pepper corn chicken were very good. Both had a slight touch of heat. I wish we ordered differently but overall the food was ok. Our server was very nice and attentive. We're debating coming back to try more of the menu but with so many Asian/Chinese restaurants to try in Edison, I think we'd try someplace else.

Plenty of original watercolors displayed and for sale on the walls. David the proprietor seemed to be handling most of the operation himself. We chose from both the lunch and regular menu, which were integrated seamlessly. Fried Pork Chop, Crispy Fried Intestine, Fish Fillets in Chili Sauce from the mains, and Orange Beef from the lunch list. I started with Hot &Sour Soup, which was flavorful and loaded with tofu, sprouts, pork slivers and potent vinegar. Loved it! The Pork Chop was deboned and pressed thin. The result was a crisp sliced Katsu-like cutlet with nice flavor and long crunchy chew. The Intestine was also crisp and filled with green beans that mixed well with the hardened shell and soft innards. Not my fave, but my lovely partner ate it enthusiastically. The Fish and Chili was very good, with tender lightly breaded white fish fillets and red chili sauce that included small pieces of celery, sprouts and cabbage, in a large bowl. Finally, the lunch sized Orange Beef was delicious with sweet and spicy amber sauce coating the pieces of lightly crisped beef. Ubiquitous broccoli sprigs added color to the dish. Service was friendly and accommodating. David was happy to interact and talk about his business there. Red Onion is a Five Star keeper.
