The closest to true indo Chinese...not like the indo Chinese in India but close. They even have the "American Chopsuey" done the food cart style. First timer .. it's pretty close to where we live but have never tried it here. From outside it doesn't look that fancy . Even the inside look is average. Very few chairs and mostly take out now . Few parking in the front but many at the rear.. Seeing Calcutta in the name , I really thought it was an undo Chinese restaurant but it ain't. It's a pure Chinese restaurant .. Very quick service 10-15 mins and the dish is ready. Tried spicy wings and they were awesome ! Also ordered chilly chicken with rice . Asked them to make spicy and yeah.. it was spicy:) had soy sauce and Chinese flavor but was spicy. Rice was sumptuous. They give a little bit of hot sauce. All for 12$.. not bad .. "ok place, not so great..." heard about this Indian-Chinese place from some friends, though it would be worth to go from Morristown to Edison. but this place is not that great. it more like 'to go' place. Taste is good but not like authentic Indian (i heard it is, but not). we tried momos, chicken chilli, egg role, schewzan rice, Hakka noodles, schewzan chicken. Fast casual at a great price. The lunch specials fill you up and then some. Definitely go for the more Indo-chinese dishes rather than you're usual. They're familiar but not exactly like you expect in the best kind of way. Drove past this place without really noticing it was there until a friends recommended this little hole in the wall. She says this is where she go if she wants home cooked indo-chinese good. Overall fantastic food! Loved the Manchurian cauliflower! We also got the chicken pakora, corn soup, chilli chicken, some kind of fried rice, and stir fried noodles with beef. All super delicious. The owner was super nice and friendly. Very accommodating to our group. Your can sit there and eat but it's more a take out place. Price is extremely reasonable. I am very very disappointed. I was soooo looking forward to eating here after I saw a review for it in a food magazine. I couldn't wait to eat their Manchurian chicken and boy was I disappointed. Nothing is worse than eating Chinese food where the chicken is all fatty and breaded and you cant even tell that you are eating Chinese... The brown rice was not good. I love sauce on my Chinese food but this was ridiculous. It was a boat load of sauce and it didn't even look fresh... My friend got the sesame chicken and she said that was alright... Oh man, Calcutta. For above-average quality Indo-Chinese food at way, way below-average prices, this is the go-to. There are definitely better Indo-Chinese restaurants around with a fancier ambiance, but none of them can beat a $5-6 lunch special with an entree, rice, and soup. Each time I now come back to Edison from the city, I can't believe that deals at that good of a price point can still exist. The service is excellent. I'll frequently order from here with a quoted wait time of 10-15 minutes. In other words, your food is ready by the time you drive here to pick it up (and yes, they deliver too). When dining in-house, the staff are friendly and responsive. The venue itself is not super trendy or upscale at all, obviously, but it's clean, homey, and well-maintained, with ample parking. It's hard to go wrong with any of the food options here; I've yet to have something I haven't liked. That being said, if you're into spicier food, the baseline heat here is already pretty good, and (at request) they're happy to add on even more to suit your preferences. Calcutta is a definite 3 for quality, +0.5 for a high quality-to-cost ratio, and another +0.5 for the nostalgia of all the times we cut 12th period in high school to pig out here. Drove 40 minutes just to eat the crab Rangoon and all the other fresh dishes made here! This is a family owned restaurant that serves delicious, reasonably priced food. They have a large variety of food that isn't super greasy. The mix of Indian and Chinese cuisine is so different from typical restarautns in the area. Plus I don't love Chinese food because loaded salt but this place doesn't do that at all. It's perfectly seasoned. Servers are very nice. Atmosphere is great for a quiet meal out. Definitely recommend crab rangoon, Chile chicken, fried rice (full of flavor)... and basically everything on the menu. We have ordered catering from here too. The food always satisfies our guest. The name has nothing too do with the kind of Chinese food they serve, I have had better Chinese in regular neighborhood chinese take out places.Please don't expect Tangra Chinese food there. The chicken dumplings tasted like uncooked flour balls, hardly had any chicken, tastes bleh! The chilly chicken was made of thick chicken skin coated in corn flour and fried and put in a gravy from the jarand had no chilly. The broccoli chicken was mediocre same bland sauce from the jar. The chicken lo mein was so so. The only good thing about the take out was the nice lady at the counter, everything else is way below standard. I went to Calcutta and ordered the lunch special.. I looked at the menu online prior to ordering. When I went to pick up the price was much more than what their online menu said, the lady who is the owner acted like she didn't speak English..then she eventually said to me "we haven't updated that menu in 5 years". Never going back, I'm surprised how they are still running with this kind of attitude. It's real savory and the flavors are intense. The sauce has a real kick to it, and if you add the soy sauce on top it makes it all sharper. This is a hole in the wall joint that will blow you away. I am not a big fan of typical chinese american dishes but once I tried the Beef Manchurian, I was hooked. The broth of the Beef Manchurian is incredible. From ginger to sour to sweet, your mouth explores a beautiful combination of flavor. The beef is tender and chewy almost like candy. Updated review So I think management has changed or reshuffled but luckily the food has not. I love how they still have lunch specials everyday from 11-3pm, including weekends. Food is tasty and they are good about taking special requests and making your food the way you ordered it, which sometimes can get difficult at other take out chinese joints. The interior decor is the same as in my previous review, spacious but not a place to sit and have a relaxing meal- this is definitely a more take out kinda place. For cleanliness, I would rate it as above average compared to similar restaurants. Calcutta, India (now Kolkata) has its very own Chinatown called Tangra and the owners of Calcutta Chinese are from there so you know its the real deal. Szechuan Lamb (3/5) - It was a little too sweet for my taste, but the lamb was very tender and there was a lot of it Chili Shrimp (4/5) - Simple, but delicious. Battered shrimp smothered with onions and chili peppers Manchurian chicken (4/5) - The flavor and the gravy were both very good! the only complaint I have is that the chicken seemed the slightest bit overcooked. I've been coming here for years and they serve up the best Indian Chinese food, hands down, on par with Nanking, but with cheaper prices. The manchurian dishes are my favs, especially the manchurian cauliflower and vegetable balls, un-frikkin believable!!! They recently started making the chicken dishes halal as well. The hot and spicy soup is incredible and loaded with veggies. Call ahead and place an order for pick up. It's a tiny restaurant with a take out vibe but, it's not cramped and they're clean.
