Employee declined carrying halal meat when I called to inquire. I made a phone call to confirm they had halal meat and the woman denied having halal meat in a harsh tone. I was very confused by this as my cousin has purchased meat from here for our family previously under the impression that it was halal. Found the butcher online while working in Concord today. My thanksgiving family tradition is cooking turkey wings. When I asked the woman if her business sold turkey wings her reply "you've called here asking that many times before. No we do not sell here" This was actually my first time calling. Turkey wings are an African American staple. To clump all of the request for turkey wings into one person is absolutely rude and culturally insensitive. I used to recommend this Indian / Pakistani grocery store to everyone especially for their fresh meats. They cut the meat for you. But lately every time I go their customer service is not good. It's run by husband /wife, they're not friendly , don't even greet you. I asked for goat meat for curry, last three times I bought from them, meat quality is no good. Last time meat was so rubbery, yesterday and other time we bought he sold me mostly ribs and fat , no actual meat. Family was complaining. He had a tray that he had already cut , I specifically asked him , please give from the front corner , he said "no I can't pick and choose", and ofcourse I came home with mostly fat, ribs , barely any meat , 4 lbs for $65, $14 per lb you're paying and that's what I got. We have been getting our fresh meat (especially goat) from here for years!!! We go probably once a month. Always great and highly recommend if buying fresh meat is what you're looking for. Terrible quality of goat meat. Went in to get 5 lbs of goat meat, and he just piled up these pre cut pieces into a bag. I asked if there was any leg pieces, he said they were mixed in. All I got was $70 worth of stale, rib pieces full of tendon and fat, hardly any meat. There was NO leg pieces. Worst experience ever, and will stick to Sunnyvale Market from here on out. read more

This is an absolute gem in the East Bay Area!! Finding a quality butcher can be tough these days especially with grass fed meats and on top of everything, Halal meat. It is a small family owned shop and I've tried everything from goat to lamb to ribeye veal and ground beef... All of which have been extremely high-quality and delicious. Have been to this place couple times, their customer care is horrible, if you are a south Asian woman, butcher will not even turn around , will talk to you turning his back pretending he is busy. The guy before and the old guy now both are the same. They might need some lessons of how to respect people, specially women. I felt like that they don't want to sell me anything. When I asked for leg meat he was very grumpy and said he can't give leg meat unless I buy 4lb or more. So I got mixed goat 2lb, all he had given me is 80% of cut ribs, no meat.. very disappointed!! Cuisine is only as good as the quality of the ingredients. MK has the freshest chicken available in the area coupled with great customer service. What a great place to get your fresh meat, both Nasser and Rakesh are extremely helpful and will go the extra mile to ensure you get top quality meat and meat cuts. I always wait and get my meat cut or dressed as I want, for chicken curry I always get full chicken and cut the pieces at home on my own like I want. The best way to get your best meat takes an effort on your side as well, find out when do they receive their meat supply, and go get your meat the next day. I've never been given old meat, both gentlemen have shown me whatever I needed, and I made the choice of either getting it or not. Dont go there at the 11th hour and expect a miracle. Mera Khana is a HFSAA certified establishment. I have been coming to Mera Khana to purchase halal and fresh quality meat and poultry for about two years now. The meat and poultry is always fresh. I have been trying to find a real butcher that carries fresh Lamb meat, as I have been watching Jamie Oliver cook for quite some time, and he makes amazing things with lamb. I walked into the store expecting the normal assortment of mess and clutter, with a dirty meat counter. Boy, was I surprised: 1) This place is CLEAN and clutterfree. 2) Great assortment of _fresh_ meats (chicken, goat, lamb, veal). 3) The two owners are fantastically nice and very helpful. They informed me that they would be getting a fresh lamb carcass on Tuesday last (4/17), and upon my request agreed to hold the loin for me. When I arrived to pick up the meat on Tuesday afternoon, they showed me that they had left the whole back-section (with the sides) completely untouched, so they could cut it the way I wanted it cut. I looked at it, and then had them trim some parts away, and walked out with a good ~4 lbs section for ~$25. At home I cooked it up, and it was absolutely great! Super tender, very wonderful and subtle flavor: a definite winner. Now, all I have left are a few bits of meat and ribs in the freezer, to be cooked into a stew or something else later. We have found our favorite butcher, and we will be back very shortly for more. read more

I've been looking for a Halal grocer who not just has a halal certificate on the wall, but also takes the time to follow through with checking out the actual farms which raise & breed the animals to make sure they are free range & cage free, & this is the place. The quality of their meat is excellent, the owners are very friendly and helpful, & not to mention they also have a halal deli section on the way. I've been frequenting Mera Khana for close to 3 years now. I worked for a local butcher in high school and was looking for a similar customer experience that I remember giving in the butcher shop. The meat was delicious and the service was great! There's since been an ownership change without a drop in quality of meat or service (The opposite, in fact!). I came here specifically for grass-fed, halal beef. Problem is, they don't have grass-fed beef, despite their claims to the contrary, on their website, on the phone, and in person. Read on, if you'd like to understand why. According to https://web.archive.org/web/20160324041020/http://merakhana.com/freshmeat.html their "meat comes only from grass fed animals." Just to make sure, I called. The woman who answered said yes, it was 100% grass-fed. I responded: "Are you sure? Can you tell me what farm the meat comes from?" She said she didn't know the farm, but she'd call the owner, to confirm that it was grass-fed, and find out the name of the farm from which it comes--and call me back. An hour later, I hadn't heard back, so I called again. The guy who picked up the phone said he confirmed with the supplier that the beef was, in fact, 100% grass-fed, but they wouldn't disclose the farm the meat came from. So I drove out to Mera Khana, and spoke to the butchers, who confirmed that the meat was, in fact, 100% grass-fed. I then bought one fresh veal t-bone steak ($9.99/lb; arrives fresh every Wednesday), one frozen beef New York strip steak ($9.99/lb), and one frozen beef ribeye steak ($10.99). I then went home, thawed the frozen steaks, and threw everything on the grill, unseasoned. The veal and the NY steak were delicious. The ribeye, by contrast, had a spongy texture, and bland flavor--not worth buying again. Since I enjoyed the veal and the NY steak, I was interested in buying them again, from Mera Khana. However, I was suspicious of their repeated claims that their veal and beef are grass-fed, because (a) the woman who answered the phone, initially, expressed uncertainty about whether the meat was grass-fed, and couldn't tell me the name of the farm from which it comes; (b) the prices seemed too good to be true (I've seen grass-fed beef and veal sell for more than twice these prices); and (c) the meat looked more fatty than grass-fed beef tends to be. When I bought the meat, I asked for the name of the supplier. The butcher said the supplier was called CalPak, and was located in Sacramento. So I Googled CalPak Sacramento, and found, by comparing addresses, that CalPak LLC is the wholesale division of East West Foods and East West Junction, a side-by-side market and restaurant, respectively, in Sacramento (https://www.yelp.com/biz/east-west-foods-sacramento-3 ). So I called East West Foods, and pressed 3 for the meat counter. I asked the butcher whether the meat was 100% grass-fed. He said it was. I asked whether he was certain. He said he wasn't certain, but his boss would know, so he transferred me to his boss, Shamsur Khan. I left Mr. Khan a voicemail. By the next day, I hadn't heard back from Mr. Khan, so I called again. This time, another worker told me that Mr. Khan is in Pakistan right now, but I should call back in a few hours, and ask for Nasir. I did so. Nasir informed me that their beef comes from two or three sources, including Harris Ranch, and a local, 100% grass-fed farm. He said they sell the Harris Ranch and grass-fed beef in their store, while they deliver only the grass-fed beef and veal to retailers like Mera Khana. I asked whether he was certain of this, or whether he could tell me the name of the local farm that provided the grass-fed meat. He said no, he wasn't certain, and he couldn't tell me the name of the farm, but the owner, Abdul Khan, would be able to tell me for certain, and tell me the name of the farm. He transferred me to Abdul Khan, for whom I left a voicemail. This Mr. Khan called me back a few hours later, and told me that, in fact, none of their beef or veal was grass-fed. All of it was fed hay and grain. He said he could order grass-fed beef from New Zealand, upon request, but it's not something he normally does. Now, to be clear, I doubt that the very nice people who work at Mera Khana are intentionally deceiving anyone. I also doubt that the very nice people at East West Foods are intentionally deceiving anyone. It sounds to me like a number of people are just making assumptions/assertions about their meat being grass-fed, when they don't know for certain--and are being misled by others who are doing the same. If I thought I had been intentionally deceived, I would give this place one star. However, because I am giving them the benefit of the doubt, and assuming it was an honest mistake, I am giving it two stars. If you want tasty, affordable, halal veal t-bones and beef New York strip steaks--and other halal items--then you will likely be quite happy with this place. However, if you're looking for *grass-fed* halal beef or veal--as they advertise on their website, and confirm repeatedly on the phone and in person--then it seems to me that you'll need to look elsewhere. read more

They are wonderful people at Mera Khana and my children are always happy to accompany me there. I don't mind paying 10 cents more for fresh superb quality.
