1st meal in Salem and Mercy Tavern casted a spell on the other restaurants and bars that no one would be better than Mercy herself. Started off with wings-perfectly cooked. With garlic parm as the rub there wasn't a lot of garlic parm flavor, but the wings were cooked so well, they still tasted amazing. Pumpkin ravioli- must try. I'm not big on pumpkin, but these are a new favorite for me. Steak tips- I always question steak at a restaurant that is not a high end steak house, but I am glad I tried them here. A fun and inviting tavern to visit while taking in the views and stories of historic Salem. The service was great, our server offered numerous suggestions and was very attentive. The cocktails are inventive and fulfilled their desired job, I especially enjoyed their beer selection. The burger was cooked well and very flavorful but the garlic fries stole the show. The fries are embedded with cloves of roasted/deep fried garlic. The aroma is intoxicating and the garlic flavor is unbelievable. The Falafel on Pita was well prepared and offered a healthier option, which was offset by those glorious fries. The Baked Mac and Cheese with Bacon could use a thinner pasta but that may just be a matter of preference. The flavor was there but it was just too heavy with the Rigatoni style pasta. I can't say enough about how fantastic this place was. I was on a 3 week road trip through New England and I had the best meal of my trip there. I was there on a busy Sat in October and before noon they were already poppin. I heard the hostess say the wait was over an hour, but I was by myself, so I asked about a solo seat at the bar. Well, she went above and beyond and got me my own little table! So nice, I was already impressed. I ordered a Room on the Broom (prosecco and apple cider with a cinnamon sugar rim), which was refreshing and delicious. Everything on the Mediterranean leaning menu sounded so incredible I could hardly decide, but I settled on the tzatziki fries and the pumpkin ravioli (a dish I order anytime I see it on a menu). The fries were terrific-- crispy, garlicy, salty, tangy perfection. The pumpkin ravioli, however, was downright mind blowing. Seriously, I've never had anything like it. I was so disappointed I only discovered this place on my last day in Salem. No joke, I will be going back just to eat here again (both the ravioli and everything else I didn't get to try). Yummy food and friendly service, went with my adult kids and they had the truffle fries and a burger, I had the ribs everything was great.

Food wasn't all that great and it was way out of the way from central Salem. It also was extremely small.

They had a line to get in my party got in line and I went to the front and asked the hostess inside how long of a wait because I have a bad foot and cannot stand long she said 1 hour for party of seven I said ok would it be alright if I had a seat somewhere until our party name is called she told me sorry no where for me to sit (really one person??) and she sees I have a cane and swollen ankle ??? How rude!! My grandson asked if they could unchain a chair from the picnic table area and she just ignored us and proceeded to sit others we left!!! read more

Waitress came over to our table maybe 3 times, and we didn't see her for most of the first half (sitting down, ordering and wait time). After waiting about 20 minutes we had to ask another waitress for a refill. Ambiance was great and the music was nice, not too loud or quiet. We started off with their specialty cocktails and MAN, we were impressed. We proceeded with an order of nachos with chili for an appetizer. Let me tell you, those were the best nachos I've ever had!! Usually nachos are unimpressive because the chip to toppings ratio is always terrible. Not with these bad boys. I ended up getting a burger with their garlic fries, ALSO YUMMM. I came to Mercy Tavern because my family and I was hungry after exploring Salem in our New England trip and we were told by a guide at the nearby House of the Seven Gables that the food here was good. We walked in and the place was pretty full, snagging the last available table. The bar was full and the restaurant was full. One two people working there in the front of the house and my family and I were worried if we would have enough time to enjoy our food before we had to go to the bus... so we were in a bit of time time crunch. We needed to get moving in 45 minutes to be able to get to our bus in time. We need not worry. The employees there were hustling, getting orders in and out. My brother and I both ordered some wings, the "hot and sweet" wings... we wanted something simple and easy to make. My mother bought the baked mac and cheese (a rigatoni with chorizo, caramelized onion, cheddar, jack, and ritz crumbs). The food was my first taste of food in the area and it was amazing! The wings were huge, I could slap someone across the face with one and do some damage... definitely not like those found in your regular Buffalo Wild Wings. The sauce was perfect. It really was the perfect balance of hot and sweet. I had to eat them all. I am a big wing fan, and I have to say these may be the best I have ever had. My brother agreed with my assessment. My mother was very happy with the baked Mac and cheese, and I had to try some. Melty, tasty and omg it had significant amounts of chorizo (I love chorizo) and it made the dish pop. We started with cocktails-Merciful Bloody Mary's & Jazzy's which were very good. The food was delicious. We chose Fish Tacos, a Salmon BLT (special), Mercy Benedict & another Sandwich (maybe with sausage on it). We were all satisfied with our selections. Mercy Tavern is the best kept food and ambiance secret of the area. Stopped by for a birthday dinner and was blown away by the baked Mac and cheese with bacon, grilled cheese, and steak tips. The steak was sublime - juicy cut, amazing seasoning, and generous portion. The Mac and cheese will make you believe in carbs and cheese for the rest of your life. My boyfriend and I picked this place for dinner & drinks & I am SO happy that we did. We initially sat at the bar and ordered drinks and an app while we waited for our table. We were seated quickly, and the bartender Darrell offered to keep us & serve us at the table. I was surprised because he was the only bartender and although the place was small, it was packed. I had no need to worry. He took great care of us and our drinks were never empty & our food came out fast. We ordered the buffalo cauliflower and truffle fries for appetizers. They were fantastic!! My boyfriend ordered the mac & cheese and I got the grilled cheese. The food was absolutely amazing! There was live music playing that night, so we stayed and enjoyed a few more cocktails while listening to the band. The craft cocktails were yummy. I also cannot stress enough how impressed I was with Darrell, he was like the Energizer Bunny, he was making & serving drinks, serving food, moving tables, it was crazy. When they first opened I thought that for a restaurant with the word "mercy" in the name there were not a lot of vegetarian options. I went back again recently and was pleasantly surprised to find that the vegetarian and vegan options had substantially increased! I've lived in Salem for a long time, and I know that the owner has a loyal staff that followed him from Howling Wolf to Mercy Tavern, so he must be doing something right. We all miss In a Pig's Eye, but if someone had to take over that spot he was probably the best person to do it. read more

We've lived in Salem, right around the corner from this location, for almost 5 years...but have only recently started visiting. The burger at Mercy is one of my favorites in all of Boston. The double patty, bacon jam, american cheese (don't act above it, you know its the best for a burger), aioli, plus a bit of lettuce for health....it is one of the all-time greats. I've had it a number of times and honestly am not sure I'll ever be able to try anything else. Plus if you get it on a Tuesday its only $6. WUT Oh and their garlic fries have chunks of creamy roasted garlic....cmonnn I want to come back to try their nachos and wings. Maybe one day.
