I had one of the most unpleasant experiences at this restaurant. While the food and atmosphere seemed fine, the behavior of one staff member -- the male cashier/server -- was completely unacceptable. It took me less than three minutes to decide which soup I wanted, and when I politely asked to switch my cracker for bread (which was clearly one of the available options), he completely lost his temper. He actually threw the cracker on the floor and tossed the bread in front of me while yelling. The store was busy, but that's absolutely no excuse for that kind of behavior toward a customer. This place was a godsend on a chilly rainy day; first time visiting Salem and came across this place after seeing the Bewitched statue and stopping in the Black Cat Curiosity Shoppe (worth visiting, a lot of fun!). I sampled the clam chowder, chicken pot pie soup, and chicken vegetable soup before deciding to have the chicken vegetable soup with egg noodles and a matzo ball plus two sides of complimentary bread. I used to frequent a Jewish deli in my home state and when I tell you this was probably the best chicken and matzo ball soup I've ever had, I mean it. My friend got the same order I did after tasting it because she said it literally tasted like her bubbe's recipe. The broth was so rich and flavorful, and you could see how well seasoned the matzo ball was just by looking at it. The chicken and the vegetables were perfectly tender, and the egg noodles weren't overcooked in the least. Had a quick lunch in Salem and came here for the first time! Was welcomed by the employee (maybe owner) and he welcomed us. He then asked us if we are first timers and talked about the menu. I was between a roll up and a sandwich and he was kind to explain them both. I got an "Italian" sandwich, forgot what it was called. I would've been more satisfied had I went to Dunkin' Donuts at 3 pm and bought 3 stale doughnuts that had been sitting out since 7 in the morning. I would've enjoyed Walmart Subway more than this. My sandwich consisted of 3 paltry little rolled up slices of ham, a meager slice of cheddar cheese and some lettuce. These people don't even think you're good enough for an entire slice of cheese. It was like. A third of a slice of cheese. Just a slim piece you'd get from a charcuterie board at a holiday work party that would make you consider quitting on the spot. The actual size of the sandwich left me gobsmacked. Smaller than my hand - which is quite tiny to begin with. This sandwich couldn't even feed a family of four mice. They'd leave hungry and disgruntled. The salad was whatever, considering I don't think its even possible to mess up a salad. It was just equally pathetically sized for the price. A couple pieces of lettuce were rotten so I played Russian roulette while eating it. Maybe I'll wake up sick tomorrow. Who knows. This is NOT the same New England Soup Factory as the one in Newton MA. The samples that they are known for are a joke here (ridiculously small portion within a thimble of a plastic cup). Not even close to the variety either. The atmosphere is lacking and the service isn't the same either. The soups are NOT the same and the sandwiches are absolutely disgusting. Avoid at all costs. It was so bad I want to drive an hour to Newton to the real location to redeem my taste buds. Came in on a cold December night before our walking tour. Inside the incredibly steamy windows, you're greeted with the warmth of soup and bread. We weren't terribly hungry and just wanted something to warm up with. I tried a small bowl of their clam and corn chowder soup and my husband tried their chicken noodle soup. Each soup came with a little ciabatta roll to use for dipping. Both of our soups were delicious and best of all, not overly salted like other soups we've had.
