We were visiting my son at Hofstra and we decided to take him and a couple of his friends out to dinner. We've taught him how to use Yelp to see pics and reviews and he chose here. First impressions weren't great to be honest. The lady behind the bar originally told us they were closed but then they switched their tune. Anyway even though we speak Spanish fluently there was some confusion ordering but we straightened all of that out. I had the roast pork which was really good. A couple of the kids had mafungo which looked amazing and got good reviews. The wife had pepper chicken which was great. We had wind empanadas sweet plantains and drinks. Yikes. As much as I enjoyed my food, delivery service was horrible. Needs a lot of improvement. Waited over an hour for my food to be delivered, only to find out that my order never went through their system. My food was already payed for too. They couldn't have called me to let me know about this ? I was expecting my food to come within the hour it said it would, but I had to wait an additional hour for the food to come. Also had to call the restaurant twice in order to get everything sorted out. Person who answered the phone the second time around had a rude attitude. Empanadas were also a bit dry. Common theme here. Indifferent, ignorant staff, shitty food, dirty place. That is a common theme throughout all the poor reviews for this poor place. The place always seems filthy to me. Look at the photo of the ketchup bottle. It was exactly that way a year ago when I last came here. They ignore you when you walk in. You have to find your own booth, walk around to someone to get some menus from, and you have to keep getting up and looking for the waitress throughout your stay. Then they only had two menus for a table of four. And there was only one other table occupied! You have to ask for your beverages three times over twenty minutes. The salt shaker is so filthy, it slips out of your hand because of the grime and grease on it. The waitresses's stomach hangs out of a ridiculously tight shirt. They bring out three orders, and ten minutes later I had to go to the counter to ask about the fourth. She goes in the back, comes out and says "oh, so sorry, they probably forget you, ha ha". I had to wash my hands after handling the menu, it was so greasy. This is the worst restaurant of any type, especially Dominican, that I have ever been in. Notice how the owner doesn't even bother to reply to any of these poor reviews any more. He's probably just trying to squeeze every nickel out of the dwindling local customer base, realizing that he is in way over his head. I ordered Breakfast and dinner via uber eats the breakfast was delicious salami fried cheese and mangu with egg but the ribs did not taste fresh and had no BBQ sauce the rice also did not taste fresh beans had no flavor. I ordered desert tres leches cake and they gave me flan. I called to rectify and the guy said there was no flan. I said you should have called me to see if I wanted flan because I hate flan. He said to call back for delivery of tres leches cake between 1pm and 3pm. I called at around 4pm they said send my address. I didn't get cake until 6pm due to owner not using Google maps to find my address which was 9 minutes from the restaurant. I was frustrated and disappointed but the cake was delicious. read more

I had an order delivered on 10.27.16 for lunch with 4 other coworkers. We ordered the lunch specials; fried fish, 3 grilled chicken breasts, and an order of pernil The food arrived and everyone began eating, but, to my dismay, half way through my order of pernil I almost ate a large bug. It looked similar to a roach or waterbug. It didn't seem like it had just fallen into the plate as it was stuck to the pork. I called the restaurant requesting a refund and was hung up on by a very nasty waitress named Iris. I told Iris that the restaurant has a dirty kitchen and that I was furious, her response was that I need to watch what I say and that their kitchen isn't dirty but the restaurant is in a dirty building. Like that is supposed to justify me almost eating an insect.  Not only was Iris incredibly rude but she didn't want to give a refund for the whole order, as the bug "was only in the pernil." I called back and spoke to Anabelle, who was much more helpful and apologetic. The delivery man did not return with my money for over an hour and a half, in between that time I called the restaurant three times. Twice I spoke to Anabelle who stated that the delivery man got stuck taking an order and she asked that I wait patiently. The third time I called, I had the luck of speaking to Iris again. When I asked where my money was she informed me that the delivery man has "better things to do than to bring me my money" Apparently there is no manager there to handle any issues and the staff isn't trained properly in dealing with anything. Finally, when the delivery man arrived he had no knowledge of what happened because he asked what was going on and didn't even know how much the refund was supposed to be for. His poor excuse for why there was a critter in my lunch was that it could have come in a box that was delivered but "that's life" I will NEVER order from that restaurant again as they have poor hygiene, whether it be in their kitchen or the building; and the food is mediocre. read more

Merengue! Merengue has recently opened right down the street from work and so far we are all loving it. First and foremost, they deliver, which is almost a requirement in this area for any food establishment. Not only do they deliver, but they deliver when you ask them to have it there and everything is always hot and fresh. The food has been VERY good - every one of the wildebeests at the job are satisfied - and they are a notoriously picky crowd. The empanadas are big and perfectly cooked. They give you six choices and we haven't found a bad one yet. The mains are all tasty and delish -this place is really not going to help with my so-called diet. My real concern is the taste was like the pork chop was spoiled or old and saturated in oil and at first bite I spit it out. The beans were also horrible in texture of the sauce and flavor, and the plantains were just Burnt. I had to throw the whole thing away. I stopped in because a few years back someone I know ordered food from here and it was pretty good. Well if I could give them -10 I would but it isn't an option. I ordered Pollo Salteado (chicken with onions and peppers) white rice, beans and maduros , Pollo Al Horno (baked chicken)with tostones and a large Sopa de Pollo (chicken soup). The cost from their menu was as follows $13, $10 and $8, which would total $31 with tax should have been $34. Well they charged $45.85 WTF. You would think laced with gold, but hell no! The food was terrible, white rice was hard and tasteless, tostones old, the chicken with peppers and onions tasted more like vinegar which scares me because I have heard that's how you can stave off bad chicken/meat smells , the Maduros were hard and raw. How do they even survive!! Would never ever ever recommend not even if they offered their meals for $1.00!! read more

Even the guys had a little take out box! Price: Can't be Beat! Unfortunately I ordered Pollo Guisado (which is supposed to be chicken stew) It was roasted Extremely dried chicken on a tiny bit of sauce. Rice with gandules was Awful! Totally dried and old! I had an extra order of yuca ... well, it was not hot inside! Looks like they put it in the microwave and not even for enough time to heat the core :( :( :( Super disappointed! Well i passed by this place before so the next time I passed by I was craving some Dominican food and decided to go in, but before I checked yelp for the reviews and they didn't look too good. I went in and ordered the arroz con abichuelas, carne guisada and a potato salad. The service was alright she wasn't nasty but she wasn't the friendliest of waitress either, I tried my food and everything was delicious and fresh despite the bad reviews, she even included some maduros that I didn't order that went really well with the abichuelas.... anyway, over all the food was delicious, the service was alright or satisfactory. I can understand sometimes the food might come old, my guess is they throw nothing away and use some food from the day before... this is definitely not a 4 or 5 star restaurant so don't expect a lot. I give 4 stars mostly for the food although the service was alright it could have been better and the order of extra maduros was great for me, but if I didn't like it I wouldn't be so happy with them being there. read more

What I can I say about this place, what happened to the Dominican flavor. I'm no Dominican but am Latino and know a little about latin cuisine. The food was dry and flavorless. White rice tasted like Asian chino rice the sticky kind, the chicken wow it was dry, the beans had so much water that if I dunked the chicken in it gave it a wet look. And let me tell you about the PERNIL who puts onions and peppers on top of it. No real crunch and again lost of flavors. It's sad cause this place is the only Dominican spot around the area. There is a Colombian spot on bell but Dominican does have a little bit more of Sazon!!!! So this place needs to step up its game. I'll be going back to give it a second chance. I usually dont share bad reviews. I used to love this place. Not sure what happened. Now the food is mediocre, at best. I've ordered there 3 times over the past year. Each time the order was incorrect. Not to mention that the service is slow! Not sure why I went back. Maybe I was hopeful! So here I am at work waiting for dinner and I ordered the pernil special with Spanish rice, and a cheese empanada. What I received was Spanish rice with iceberg lettuce and some beans on the side. Pernil what pernil!!! Missing!!! So I called this restaurant and the careless attitude from the person who answered the phone chuckled and said sorry call door dash to reimburse you. Now why is it door dash problem when you the restaurant didn't prepare and plate the dish correctly. By the way the rice aside from missing the meat was dry and bland the beans way over seasoned. The sweet plantains burned. Never again will anyone I work with order from there and believe me I work for a huge company. Big mistake!!P.S. Finally the order come and its missing part of the order and the sandwich ordered was incorrect. I called and he said he was to busy to help me. I like this place and I've been here several times. The yelp reviews aren't great so I decided to post because we've always had a good experience. It's tasty, solid food. My husband loves the chicken stew. My girls love the pernil. The oxtail is delicious. It's not fancy. It looks like a bar and doesn't feel like place you should bring kids. Basically, I once gave this place 5 stars, but not so much anymore. They had been closed for about a month and, naturally, ALL I craved during that time was Dominican food from Merengue. We had driven and called (translation: stalked) the restaurant like three times a week waiting for them to reopen. Just when we thought they were shut down for good, by chance we went last night and all was well in the world....until... We got home to eat. We ordered the usual: chicharonnes, tostones, etc. We had no tostones in the bag when we got home and the chicharonnes tasted like fish. Disgusting. We called and the gentleman said we could come for the tostones and, when I asked what could be done about the chicharonnes, he said we could bring it back to exchange for what we want. (Note: when I brought it back, he fried a fresh piece of pork, picked the old pieces out of my takeout tray and put the fresh ones in- not very professional, however I did tell him it was okay to do so) So, that turned out okay. BUT a major gripe I have is the quality. They gave hardly any rice (which is like the cheapest item you could give someone at a restaurant) a couple chunks of meat, and for $10 for a plate- not worth it to me. My second ever five star rating. Just ordered the take out here at work for second time....and the 3 girls that ordered with me all agree - 5/5. Im not Dominican.....im not even Spanish so my experience with this type of food is limited, but i can't imagine other Dominican food tasting much better than this! EVERYTHING we all got was all fantastic; a pulled pork dish, ox tail stew, and some sea food lump thing (kinda like a big crab cake but harder and thicker.....can't figure out what the medium is). As good as everything was I'd say the scampi sauce with the seafood thing was the most impressive. But just get whatever your in the mood for cause everything is phenomenal. Many times ethnic food like this tends to be over-spiced....this food is NOT. Great find in the North Shore of Nassau LI! Just happen to look up Dominican Restaurants on my phone and bingo! :) It's a small, unassuming place that serves great Dominican food (Yeah, I know none compares to the home cooking in DR) at a good price. Juicy pernil and crispy chicharron, flavorful seafood salad (mariscos) and maduros that aren't too sweet and go well with the arroz habichuelas. And you will receive a generous portion! This spot is fairly new. It is the ONLY Dominican spot in the area, (let alone Spanish restaurant, in which you'd have to travel to hempstead and risk you life for any other Spanish spot). So ice had the oxtail, the beef stew, and the chicken soup which I really wasn't too fond of. The beef stew is out of this world. The OXTAILS is a great beef dish as well. The rice and pink beans are cooked to perfection, and the platanos add just the right amount of sweet balance to any dish. The lunch prices are unbeatable at $7; you get a meat and to sides. The food has soo much flavor, not nearly as bland as most Spanish food I've eaten. The owner is a doll. You can order ahead if time too because parking is limited. read more
