Went to this hole in the wall spot cuz I like Merguez and fries and I wasn't disappointed. Fresh crusty bread, freshly made fries and merguez sausage cooked on order filled me up. The service was leisurely since the cook also served me while I sat outside in the patio. The space could definitely use a refurb or makeover, but the food is good, filling and affordably priced.
They have outdoor covered seating, but most get takeout. They don't have tap water but bottled water for $1 which isn't bad. Everything is pretty affordable here. If you pay in cash, you can avoid the tax. We got the 3 meat platter. The merguez sausages itself didn't actually have much flavor. The kofta was seasoned decently although could have used a bit more seasoning. The liver was not bad. The fries were mediocre - I would have appreciated more crispiness. They also gave us bread. I liked the chickpea pie and the flatbread more. The chickpea pie had a custard texture and came with harissa. The flatbread was reheated and had a little crisp but mostly mushy, stuffed with tomato and onion. I think it's a 3 brought up to 3.5 given how cheap it was, but I don't understand the hype.
Came back after three years or so and Merguez and frites is still banging. And I have to give them props for keep their prices the same after all this time and economic turmoil. After having had the life changing French taco in Paris, Morocco and Canada I was delighted to discover Merguez and frites had it on their menu all along. Theirs does not come in the traditional brick shape but I loved it anyway. It satisfies the craving even though it's not EXACTLY like the real deal. The Merguez and frites sandwich is as amazing as always, a simple but absolutely delicious sandwich. Oh and I finally got to try their mahadjeb and it was beautiful! Chewy and crispy thin bread with a slightly sweet but savory tomatoey caramelized oniony filling. Took me back to Barbes in Paris. Really nice people working and super laid back, casual vibe. Gonna keep going back again and again.
Ordered: Merguez Sandwich (~$10): with fries Pizza Kari (~$2) Aya's take: This Merguez Sandwich has been on my mind for some time now! I didn't know it was possible to crave something you never had but here we are. I've never had Algerian cuisine before but Merguez is a spicy sausage made of beef or lamb. It was soft, not as snappy as a hot dog or typical sausage and extremely well-seasoned and full of flavor. The bread was also super fresh and soft! The fries could've been crispier and the sauce was a little light. For ~$10, the Merguez Sandwich is loaded with ingredients and definitely a solid street food. The Pizza Kari tastes like a homemade pizza my grandma would make. It's doughy and the ratio of cheese to tomato was surprisingly just right. I was worried the tomato would be overpowering but that wasn't the case. Great spot on Steinway, would definitely go back!
With all due respect to vegetarians and vegans, I seldom choose the vegetarian option on a menu. I love vegetables, but I usually love meat and seafood more. However, I came to Merguez and Frites specifically eyeing the kabantita sandwich even knowing it did not have meat and it was the best thing I had. The other food was good - we got a meat platter and tried their pizza, but the kabantita is chef's kiss. To this day, I still talk about it and tell my brother he needs to go here for the sandwich alone. So y'all should follow suit. Delicious. It's a small place, but they do have a bit of seating and the staff is so nice. Definitely support this local business; your taste buds will thank you.
Absolutely incredible food. Good people who love to feed you. They let me try each soup before I picked, they gave us desserts on the house, and they packed th plates full!! Highly recommend the white bean soup, merguez and frites sandwich or place, and the chicken parm special. Honestly anything you get will be fantastic. Couldn't recommend a place more.
Merguez sandwich with fried within it: a solid sandwich, it's filling and satisfying without being overly greasy or heavy. The sausage is flavourful and tender, fries were nice and added texture. It wasn't too spicy despite the spicy sauce (optional). The bread was really nice and soft and tender too. All this for $10 is very reasonable, I would recommend. I enjoyed the pizza, the crust reminds me of the thin crust Chicago style pizza, it's almost like a pie crust, nice and flaky but not overly buttery. The cheese was kinda odd, it didn't seem like mozzarella, tasted more like a cream cheese, maybe Laughing Cow? It's definitely worth a try, and at only $2 it's a no brainer! Quick, courteous service. There's no seating inside but there's an enclosed outdoor patio at the front. I'll be back to try the chicken sandwich and get more of the pizza, the chicken looks really good too!

The restaurant is a hole in the wall with an essentially open kitchen and some seating in the covered patio and stools along the back wall. The inside was clean and maintained well, although I do wish the outdoor seating area was a bit neater because the tables looked like they hadn't been cleaned for a while with many crumbs and stain remnants. My friend and I shared a Merguez sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich contained spicy lamb sausage, fries, and little red sauce (harissa?) on crusty white bread, and despite having such few fillings, it was incredibly flavorful from the warm and rich spices in the sausage. Neither the sausage nor the harissa were spicy for us, but there certainly is a light kick. The sausage casing is soft rather than crisp or snappy, and the sausage has a crumbly texture without at all being greasy or dense. The fries more so add the crispy textural contrast. My only complaint would be that I wish there was more sauce on the bread because it was a little on the drier side in an otherwise starch-dense sandwich. The side salad, which was similar to a Greek horiatiki salad with lettuce for a fuller meal, was refreshing and just what we needed to contrast a heftier sandwich. Lastly, the staff was friendly and the service was very quick without compromising the quality, freshness, or attention to which they prepared our food. This casual joint makes for excellent quick lunches or late night bites, and for $10, is certainly worth the value! I will definitely return to try other menu items!
This place has been on my list for a long time. As far as I know, Merguez and Frites is the lone outpost of non-Moroccan Maghrebian cuisine in the New York region, following the closure of the Tunisian "La Goulette" in Williamsburg a few years back. I had the garantita sandwich, which offered a flavor profile with few corollaries to other dishes I've tried. The custardy chickpea flour (besan)-based filling is almost like a savory flan, served with a mild harissa paste on a toasted baguette. The dish this came closest to reminding me of is faina, a chickpea cake served underneath Argentinian pizza when ordered a caballo (on horseback). Truly a unique gem in the city that I hope stays for the long haul.
Small, causal Algerian restaurant known for their merguez. They are also halal. I had the mixed platter with merguez sausage, kofta, and rice. They meats were very good and flavorful! Their mahadjeb was very good too. It's similar to a paratha with a pepper, tomato and onion filling. Great food and friendly staff. Will have to come back to try the sandwich, garantita, and the Algerian pizza!
Polite owner behind the counter serving great merguez and frites sandwiches. They were unfortunately not serving the pizza when I went due to Ramadan. Nice outdoor space in front for that part of town
I'm conflicted with giving 3 stars because on the one hand, the food was delicious. But in the other hand, I was overcharged for my order. I got a slice of pizza and an onion pie, both of which were great. I asked for 1 platter of a little merguez, kofta, and meatballs. I wanted to try a bit of each. There's a meat combo option on the menu, and I thought I articulated what I wanted. The dude then came out with 3 separate containers of each. I was charged $36 for everything, which seems like a lot since all I wanted was a mixed platter and the platter is listed on the menu as $14. I asked him if the amount was correct and he said yes. The receipt also didn't break down my order so I have no idea where this number came from. Again the food was amazing, and they gave me a slice of walnut cake on the house (also amazing). But I still left feeling annoyed at how much I spent for everything.

Small place, mainly for take out orders. They do have some outdoor seating. Everything on the menu looks good and affordable. I ordered the kofta over rice. The menu just stated that it was seasoned beef, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I am so happy I ordered this - the kofta was similar to hamburger patties and they were flavorful. It was served with a creamy sauce. Not sure what it was but I reminded of a mixture of ketchup and mayonnaise. The rice was also delicious. The portions were generous as well. This place will be one of my go to spots for cheaper and delicious food options. read more

The northern part of Steinway Street is still flush with Arab and North African culture, community, and cuisine and Merguez & Frites provides visitors a delicious taste of The Maghreb. The thing to get is obviously the merguez frites, preferably with extra merguez and extra spicy (which is mild by comparison if you're acclimated you heat). The merguez are full of flavor, the frites are just right, and when melded with the red pepper spread and the pillowy baguette...each bite is perfectly balanced and delectable. The namesake sandwich is obviously great, but if I had to name one item that is a must during every visit, it's actually the Algerian pizza. The crust is thin and tasty without being flimsy while the tomato sauce and herbs provide plenty of flavor so you're not missing the cheese. There are a few other options on the menu including kofta and chicken, which are also worth trying, but he warned the platters are extremely generous so you better have help eating! This is Queens dining at its finest: a traditional Parisian street food popularized by Algerians that is perfect when washed down with a Brazilian guarana soda. Highly recommended! read more

I ordered from here and didn't realize they had canceled my order, as they had run out of what I'd ordered. As they were closing, I showed up and hadn't realized they had run out of my order. The man working didn't have my order and had no idea, as it had been canceled. Without hesitation, he gave me an amazing layered potato, cheese and chicken dish and apologized. He refused payment and was exceptionally gracious and insisted I take what he had. In hindsight, I fear he gave me food he was planning to take home himself. The dish was amazing. It was like scalloped potatoes, thick with cheese and layered with chicken. It was delicious. I can't recommend this place enough. Not only for his kindness, but due the quality of the food. read more

Even in a neighborhood that has every possible cuisine, Merguez & Frites offers authentic Algerian classics you don't often see. Everything was packed with flavor. A fair amount of vegetarian options. The mahadjeb (onion tomato stuffed flatbread) stood out--you'd be looking under and around the flatbread wondering how they possibly fit in so much flavor. The Garantita is moist and flavorful, if you're not familiar with it, don't assume it is dry like many chickpea dishes are. Generous portions and perfect service. Clear menu and prices. read more

Victor (cook) was so kind, gave recommendations and cooked the merguez so attentively. Unfortunately the restaurant is too cold, and the staff have to brave winters with little to no heat inside the restaurant. Outside seating has two heaters but they run low and we could not feel anything so we left early. Many others decided to take to go because the restaurant was just too cold. Owner should install heat inside, not freezing while laboring is a basic human right. read more

Garantita Sandwich Europe once was defined as all the land around the Mediterranean Sea. North Africa is no longer considered part of Europe and neither is the Levant. But even today when you look at the food in the lands around the Mediterranean, you will find a lot of similarities. Take for example Panisse (from Provence, France), Panelle (from Sicily, Italy), Falafel (from Levant) and Garantita (from Algeria). They are made from Chickpea Flour. In Italy they are triangular shaped, rectangular in France and Algeria, and ball shaped in the Levant. They are all humble foods because they are easy to make, do not cost much, and are very filling. There are many places in NY/NJ where you can get a decent Falafel/Panisse/Panelle, but probably the only place where you can get an excellent Garantita is Merguez & Frites (located at 40-06 25th Ave, Astoria, NY 11106). Garantita as opposed to the rest is baked, not fried. It has eggs (so is not vegan). Typically you eat it like a sandwich with a smear of hot sauce (Harissa). This was Algeria's food during its. Independence struggle. It is today one of the most popular street food in Algeria. Merguez & Frites has a lot of excellent food to offer. Its signature Merguez & Frites Sandwich (Lamb Sausage with fries in a Baguette) is its best seller. The Rosemary Baked Chicken is outstanding, but go there to try "Garantita". read more

I came back to change my review cause they're food just doesn't miss, grab yourself a merguez and fritas sandwich with a Guava Jarrito and you are set. I don't like that they close early sometimes but the food is amazing. Papito in the back on the grill is the man! read more

Rounding from a 3.5 because the price point was decent. I got the merguez sandwich and North African pizza from here the other day. The merguez sandwich had delicious fries inside and I liked the sauce a lot. The sausage itself was not the standout unfortunately. The North African pizza was a good little snack. I'm not sure how authentic it is to the North African style, but I'm not sure I would label it as a pizza. Overall though, it was a pretty good meal and a nice inexpensive option for the area. read more
Algerian food in NYC is pretty hard to find, i would have never known about this restaurant and its location, since its tucked away in a very small spot near the corner of Steinway and 25th Ave. while i just had lunch somewhere else, my colleagues from work stopped by and commented about the sausage, fries in a baguette?? Ok i am listening, so this place has a home made grilled spicy lamb sausage, harissa and fries as the basic fillers, this is sounding good, too bad i ate lunch and i am not hungry anymore. When we walked in, we were met by a friendly grill man who is taking orders and engaging customers as they walk in to the store. In mind, i could only sense 2 things, the smell of grilled lamb and freshly made Algerian Pizza. So my friends ordered and i felt the URGE to just try something because it all looked freshly made. So i got a slice of Karantita with extra Harissa. The first spoon full was fluffy, can taste eggs, chickpeas, cumin,spices and onion. The Harissa pairs itself perfectly to add a balance of flavors and depth. Meanwhile my friends are chomping down on a baguette packed with fries and lamb sauce drizzled with Harissa, so while the visual of their meal seems more empowering and engaging. I have to say my slice of the soft warm Karantita was delicious, flavorful and very filling, i was advised they serve it with baguette but in my opinion that would be too heavy and I really wanted to taste the flavors and spices in the food. Will come back and have a sandwich for sure as as try the tomato pizza which reminds me of a Sicilian slice. My only regret was not waiting for lunch but i am always ready to take advice on great food.. read more
Friendly service, authentic and fresh food, low prices, and outdoor seating (well, three tables during covid)--what's not to love! Got the namesake sandwich with regular spiciness and was not disappointed. The lamb sausage was zesty and hot, the roll crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the fries chock full of flavor, if a little too soft. Can't wait to drop by and try the pizza. read more

I'd never had a merguez sandwich in my life before coming to this shop and I can pretty much say that it was the missing piece of puzzle that I didn't even know was missing. The kind man behind the counter who is now forever my "Mr. Merguez" treated me like family the moment I walked in and most casually offered me some fresh sliced watermelon for free. His delectable merguez is grilled to order and placed in generous portions over a French baguette next to some of the best fries I've ever had (big deal). The merguez really speaks for itself and you'll find yourself chewing for 10 minutes straight while shaking your head up and down in agreement with its flavors until you're finished. Can't recommend it enough. read more
