I lived in the Middle East and ate Yemeni food weekly. Aden Restaurant is one of two Yemeni restaurants in Astoria on Steinway, which is an area with a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants, shops, and food carts. We got the usual maraq soup to start out and some salad and tea. For the main dishes, we had chicken ogda and lamb zerbian. Both were good but the ogda was a potato version without tomatoes. The bread was freshly made and good. They do not serve Yemeni dessert here. Aden Resturant is surprisingly hard to find! Located on Steinway Street in the heart of Astoria, Aden, a Yemeni eatery, does not have a street awning in English. So Glad this new Yemeni restaurant is here now! Awesome! First the decor ,they put a tremendous amount of thought and money into the decor. It is so beautiful. I had the "bad camera" (it's what we call it.) So the pictures do not do the space justice. There are large screen TV's playing classic movies, comfy silk chairs, exotic art and lamps, brick walls, and marble tables. The restaurant is well heated which is very important to me and most important it is clean. A nice place to eat, sit, talk, and watch movies, a relaxing experience in a frenetic city. Now what you are waiting for about the food. The bread is the size of a large NYC pizza. I say NYC because in general NY has larger pies than the rest of the country. The Fava bean dip was so much better than the Yemeni restaurant we went to in Brooklyn. The one in Brooklyn had a bitter taste. This has a tomato base and was close to a chili taste. I do not eat meat often but had the lamb Segar. It was outstanding. It is a lamb sizzler with spices and vegetables that include cumin, coriander, cinnamon, scallions and tomatoes. I am going to go back super soon and try a fish dish. I mainly eat fish and vegetables. The fish is more expensive and we were short on cash. But it was so worth the guilt I have over eating meat! ( I do not know if it was cash only but we want to pay cash when it is possible.) There was a bit of a language barrier so we just pointed to what we wanted to order. At the time I go back if it is as good as it was last night they get 5 stars! It is at least 4 and a half stars easily! I usually do not award 5 stars on first visit and when I have I regretted it! This is a destination restaurant for sure! Come from any of the 5 boros from NJ, from Ct, as a tourist ,come from Philly come from anywhere! Mixed grill combo was a good amount of food for 2 people. We got to try all the different kababs. The feta salad it came with was definitely not cheap on the feta. I wasn't too crazy about the meat broth soup it came with but I'm not complaining because it was decent for dipping my bread. The baba ghanoush appetizer in my opinion is better than the bean spread like appetizer. I loved that the baba ghanoush was nice and smokey. They didn't have hummus either of the 2 times I went which was disappointing because I was really looking forward to hummus. read more

We came for iftar nearly two hours after sunset, looking hopelessly like kafirs who were just eating Yemeni on that particular evening in hopes of a cheap but filling meal. But thankfully the proprietors of this restaurant looked past this, showing us the diyāfah that is central to the spirit of Ramadan. (I'll stop it with all the Arabic now.) The owners even humored us when we requested to start the meal/break our non-exist fast with a date, just as the prophet is said to have done. We didn't mean to blaspheme, I just really like dates and the Arabs have access to the best in the city. The next courses were a bowl of filling barley soup and plates of vegetables. We ordered one plate of spinach and another of mulukhiyah. My take on the latter remains generally unchanged from previous encounters - you really had to grow up on this bitter leaf for it to be enjoyable in any respect. The spinach was nice though, especially when round crispy bread came out of the even for dipping. The main course was predictably oversized, a rack of lamb with yellow scented rice piled high on a separate plate. It would have satisfied no matter how long it had been since our last meal (just five hours in this case). Coming so late meant that all of the true believers had long since eaten and returned home, so we had the place to ourselves, along with the owner and an interested Al Jazeera Arabic documentary on Indonesia. I'm not Muslim, but on evenings like these, with hearty food and a warm reception, I wonder why not. I've eaten here quite a few times. The guy who owns the cart and works the late afternoon/night shift has a disgusting attitude. The first time I payed no attention to it. Christmas day at around 6:30 pm I asked him if I could pay with card because the kabobs were made outside. He sarcastically asked me "is this your first time here" knowing I've been there a few times before. I replied "yes but I've always paid with cash and in the past I was told to pay outside separately for the kabobs as they were 2 separate businesses. I myself have been working in hospitality for 10 years and would never speak to a customer in such a disgusting manner for absolutely no reason. I replied by telling him to speak nicely to customers and he started yelling and getting agressive. I'll never be back after this. I went to this spot on Friday Feb 12 and bought 2 meals. There were 2 person working and the younger one took my card to charge it inside the store and asked my zipcode. He took his time to charge me. Charge was right until few hours my credit card is continuously being charged from different store and websites. Over $700 of transactions was made and I called my bank to report this. I am 100 % sure that the person took my card to charge me took a photo of it and he knows the zipcode started making all these transactions. Why i am sure, because i dont use this card this much and when i do i use contactless payments. This is the first time the card was out of my sight. Its hard to believe that people would do such thing. I am also sure he has done this to many other people. There was an elderly women right before me at that time and he also took her card to charge, maybe she wont check and might end up paying hundreds of dollars for him. Do not order delivery from here. Instead of just calling me to cancel my seamless order because their delivery person hadn't arrived to work, they make me wait over an hour for nothing. I called the restaurant to find out where my food was and he told me of the staffing issue. I came here in August with my cousin who had just landed from Detroit. This place is not good at all. I am being generous with the two stars because I came here in April and the service and food was much better. First of all the place is huge. Too big and has a somewhat buffet feel to it, except since there's no people or dozens of pans to serve yourself from, it simply has a quiet and empty environment. Second, the food is very expensive and not great. It's ok, but again not great, and considering the price, it should be mind blowing food. Third, they don't accept credit cards, and direct you to the 1.75 ATM machine. If you're going to charge avg. 60 dollars for two people, you SHOULD take credit cards. Fourth, the lady who served us in August was really bad. She literally frisbee'd the plates on the table, and wasn't really friendly. My husband and I ordered a mango smoothie to share. -1 star there...the smoothie was not worth the price, it tasted like processed mango pulp. We got the salad and soup that came with the entrees and they were delicious! Beautifully seasoned broth and the salad has a tasty dressing and feta cheese was a great accompaniment. I had the Haneeth there and it was delicious, I try the same dish at different Yemeni places and this was hands down at the top of the rankings. Okay so, this place is NOT somewhere you wanna sit at. Service is terrible, the chef looks somewhat unsanitary and it's just filthy. The food however, is A-freaking-1. My recommendation is call them up to order and pick the food up and eat somewhere else lol. The lamb Haneeth is the best thing on their menu. We were the only one in the whole place so you think you get the waiter attention but unfortunetly we were forgotten, the soup and salad came in first but we had to wait for almost one hr for the main course.
