Came here last night and their cart outside in the front makes the best kofta kebabs and great grilled kebabs in general and the rice is fantastic!!! OMG can't wait to come again very soon!!

Yemeni cuisine at it's best! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yemeni_cuisine It is a new restaurant in the same location as the former Ubol's kitchen. http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/ubols-kitchen/ I was not a fan of Ubol's Kitchen and I tried them twice! So Glad this new Yemeni restaurant is here now! Awesome! First the decor ,they put a tremendous amount of thought and money into the decor. It is so beautiful. I had the "bad camera" (it's what we call it.) So the pictures do not do the space justice. There are large screen TV's playing classic movies, comfy silk chairs, exotic art and lamps, brick walls, and marble tables. The restaurant is well heated which is very important to me and most important it is clean. A nice place to eat, sit, talk, and watch movies, a relaxing experience in a frenetic city. Now what you are waiting for about the food. The bread is the size of a large NYC pizza. I say NYC because in general NY has larger pies than the rest of the country. The Fava bean dip was so much better than the Yemeni restaurant we went to in Brooklyn. The one in Brooklyn had a bitter taste. This has a tomato base and was close to a chili taste. I do not eat meat often but had the lamb Segar. It was outstanding. It is a lamb sizzler with spices and vegetables that include cumin, coriander, cinnamon, scallions and tomatoes. I am going to go back super soon and try a fish dish. I mainly eat fish and vegetables. The fish is more expensive and we were short on cash. But it was so worth the guilt I have over eating meat! ( I do not know if it was cash only but we want to pay cash when it is possible.) There was a bit of a language barrier so we just pointed to what we wanted to order. At the time I go back if it is as good as it was last night they get 5 stars! It is at least 4 and a half stars easily! I usually do not award 5 stars on first visit and when I have I regretted it! This is a destination restaurant for sure! Come from any of the 5 boros from NJ, from Ct, as a tourist ,come from Philly come from anywhere! I like Yemeni cuisine it is not boring and more rare than other Middle Eastern cuisines. I think there is a Felafel shop on every corner of Manhattan. Yemeni cuisine is more rare more exotic but not weird just delicious! It is 11/28/12 and as of now I am first to review.

Middle Eastern food, best for take out. Love their shish kebab and kofta kebabs. Most of the food is made on charcoals. If you are craving for a authentic middle eastern food, you should definitely give them a visit.

Mixed grill combo minus the chicken
    Aniqah K.

Mixed grill combo was a good amount of food for 2 people. We got to try all the different kababs. The feta salad it came with was definitely not cheap on the feta. I wasn't too crazy about the meat broth soup it came with but I'm not complaining because it was decent for dipping my bread. The baba ghanoush appetizer in my opinion is better than the bean spread like appetizer. I loved that the baba ghanoush was nice and smokey. They didn't have hummus either of the 2 times I went which was disappointing because I was really looking forward to hummus.

Absolutely the best Yemeni restaurant in town. I have tried another Yemeni restaurant in Brooklyn (Yemen cafe), and I found this one way better. Great food, great service. It sucks though they only accept cash.

Some good Haneeth! The lamb is so tender and tasty.
    Irene K.

Really good food with great portions and reasonable prices. I tried the Haneeth, which was awesome. The lamb was tender and flavorful. I'll definitely be back to try the rest of the menu. The service is also great, which is always a plus for me. So go and enjoy.

Its a small mom and pop shop so I was excited for its authentic and variety of Indonesian dishes. Their menu was quite big so I appreciated the QR code to see pictures. Started off with the Sate Padang (A4) which were beef tongue skewers in a curry-like sauce. Interestingly the skewers had different textures from tender pieces to harder/chewier cuts. The sauce was spicy and less creamy than a traditional curry that went well with the rice cakes. The Nasi Ayam Goreng Urap (R15) featured fried chicken as well as mixed veggies with shredded coconut. Loved a sweet-savory part of the veggies and how the coconut gave it an extra chew. Rice, chicken, and sambal was the perfect combo for each bite. The Kari Bihun (N7) had the rice vermicelli that I was craving. Their curry soup was spicy and aromatic. Loved how the vermicelli was cooked just right and stayed intact/chewy throughout my meal. Enjoyed the mix of tofu skin, tofu puff, fish cakes, fish balls, egg, and beansprouts! I was getting too full to check out their desserts/drinks but definitely want to try their cendol next time! It was popping late on a weekend so service was alright. Took a while to place our orders but food came out at a reasonable time!

You'll find yourself lost in the hidden gems of Levant Lebanese and Egyptian culture. Made my journey to Levant for the first time and it was a pleasure. What got my attention the chicken and beef shawarma that was spinning on the counter dripping with fats, juices and flavor. Right when we got seated, the manager brought us freshly prepared, piping hot pieces of Falafel. Very good and well prepared. Very nice of him. Then So I ordered myself their chicken shawarma. The chicken was a little dry but it was still flavorful and delicious. A little hint of Sumac. What I would recommend is management to take a little more precautions on their customers. We ordered their famous Mixed Feteer, which is basically like their house pizza. And it took about 20 minutes to make and I totally understand that it gets a little busy but we have to prioritize the first customers all the way to last. But I would love to give my love and appreciation to management for serving a complimentary plate of their house sweets. It was heaven! We had their Kunefa and chocolate baklava. Mouth was watering to the extreme. I would definitely say that giving Levant in Astoria is well worth the drive if you're coming from out of town like myself but they offer really high quality Lebanese and Egyptian cuisine.

Pros: seated quickly, ambiance was lovely, appetizers came out quickly, the Lasuni Gobi was delicious. CONS: My husband and I waited 40+ minutes for our main dishes (dal + rice and the Paneer Tikka dish) to arrive....... And we watched the people who were seated AFTER us receive their MEAT dishes before we got our ours and we most definitely ordered first. We asked our server MORE THAN ONCE what was taking so long and we got the same answer each time "I've told the kitchen to hurry, it'll be out soon" To make matters worse, the person who brought us our dishes (maybe the chef? Maybe the manager?) brought them without the naan that we ordered. When I asked, "where's our naan?" He had the audacity to rudely say "it'll be out in a few minutes", as if we hadn't already been waiting 40+ minutes for vegetarian food that I could've whipped up myself in 20 minutes. His attitude towards us was so unacceptable considering the circumstances. We have absolutely no idea what happened or why it took so long for our simple dishes to arrive. It's especially perplexing considering that the people who came in AFTER us got their meat dishes first. The server apologized and decided to bring us some kulfi (ice cream) to try to make up for it, but we try to avoid eating sugar so that was useless. I felt bad for the server because it wasn't his fault that our food took a ridiculous amount of time to make it to our table, and it's not cool that a manager never stepped in to try to reconcile. As someone who waited tables for 8+ years, I was shocked at the lack of support this server received from his management team. The dal and paneer tikka dishes were average tasting at best (and overpriced), making another trip here completely unfathomable, most especially considering how we were treated. Note to management: do better. Support your staff and step in to reconcile with unhappy guests if this happens again.

The food has always been freshly prepared, in large portions, and cooked quite well. I'm thankful that has not changed much. On my most recent visit, we got a Mix Grilled and Vegetarian Plate to share between four people. There was so much food that we did not have dessert next door as originally planned. Prices are higher nowadays, but you are receiving great value for what you pay. Both chicken shawarma and the beef kufta from the Mix Grilled tasted great, especially with the provided zesty white sauce. I also added hot sauce to mine, which made it more satisfying. The chicken kebab was not bad, it had a nice char, but slightly dry. All of the accompanying humus (a bit salty), salad, rice, and garlic pita were excellent too. For the Vegetarian Plate, though good, I would like the falafels to be fluffier. The best things I enjoyed on the plate was the fried eggplants and baba ghanosh. It also comes with cous cous, which was good. Fresh middle eastern cuisine, made with quality ingredients and care, this restaurant may not be my first choice in Astoria because it's not as sexy as some of the other offerings, but I'm glad that they are still around when I just want a quality meal at a reasonable price.
