Such a cute hole in the wall! Great service. The server was very patient with us and offered great recommendations. They have a big private parking lot. The ambiance was very traditional, felt like home. Bottomless chips and salsa. As always, I ate too much chips but they were so warm and good! I recently went here when mistaking trying to stop in at Alamo Tamale's a couple days before Christmas. A couple of co-workers and I found this place and turns out it was an okay place. First glance, it has a "hole in the wall"/local restaurant vibe and I was greeted and seated very quickly. Once sat, we ordered our drinks and was given in a timely manner and had a decent experience. The more I write this, the more I realize I don't have anything to rave about. I ordered off their breakfast menu, which is open all day, and ordered their Migas. I was given corn tortilla along with eggs, cheese, and pinto beans... I was very disappointed in the lack of salt and black pepper on my eggs and potatoes. Conveniently they had black pepper and salt on my plate, but if they added a jalapeno, this breakfast would've been great and salted their potatoes off the frier. If you're ever needing something regular and not Ninfa or El Tiempo, I would recommend this place. read more

Our last two times to Merida have been very disappointing, so much that we now prefer breakfast in the small family-run Dona Maria restaurant two blocks east of Merida, which is inviting with very good, friendly service. The wait staff is fluent in English. Merida seems to be on its last legs, the parking lot was empty and restaurant closed on Sunday morning Dec. 30 after we left Dona Maria. A Bobcat was in the parking lot. ??? Were they having work done? Were they closed for good? The original Owner came to our table a few years ago. He has a home in Mexico and said his son runs the restaurant now and they could get $1 million for the property but they will keep it until they decide to sell it. Years ago this restaurant was busy and bustling and frequented by many, especially downtown (lawyers, policemen, business people). Not now. Sad. I'm writing this as I the waiter takes my plate and I have zero complaints. Actually no. The only complaint I have is that the salsa needed a bit of salt. I'm not sure why other patrons are giving bad reviews based on the customer service. They must have eaten here on a bad night. Our waiter was on top of everything, was very polite and very knowledgeable about the menu. The Merida Special had some items that I've never heard. The waiter explained them and I ordered it. Well, this restaurant certainly emphasizes the "meh" in Merida. We hadn't been in over a decade, but it was more due to its location than our memories of a mediocre gustatory experience. Now, after that memory jostling meal, we probably won't be back for another decade, or so. While the waitress was sweet as can be, our meal left much to be desired, such as a better meal. My chilaquiles were okay: tortilla chips, scrambled up with eggs, onions and jalapeno peppers, wait, wouldn't that dish be called migas? The order is accompanied with cubed fried potatoes, refried beans, and your choice of maiz or harina tortillas. Could've been fantastic, but it wasn't. The bf ordered the enchiladas Veracruzana. The enchiladas were hidden under a gloop of cheese, with a lone olive in the mix? I guess this distinguishes it as Veracruzana style enchiladas versus enchiladas without an olive? The martini of enchilada dishes! NOT! Also, the table salsa lacked heat and flavor. I regretted not packing along my own bottle of Merida (the city, not the restaurant) derived Mr. Pikante for emergency situations like this. While Merida is located next door to a church and a cemetery, they appear to be by-passed for Ninfa's, El Tiempo, and Dona Taqueria down the street. Their parking lot was barely full on a Sunday, at an obvious time for brunching it up. That observation, like those made in horror movies, should've have been heeded. read more

Came here after we decided to give Ninfas a rest as everyone goes there and does not give the other restaurants a try. Place was packed but staff was friendly and the food came out fresh and hot. My wife had the fajitas here, hot fresh, and great flavor. I tried one of the Yucatan specialties the Panuchos. Homemade stuffed corn tortillas with pork, beans, and much more. Great flavor and taste. Really enjoyed this flavor, much different then your traditional tex-mex. We will def be back here to try more. read more

How I missed dining at this long standing place... Lunch today - fairly crowded. Parking lot next door. Clean; fast and friendly service; and cooking area is open and right in the center of the restaurant. Large menu - not sure if I would call it Tex-Mex, maybe a bit more "Mex". Free chips and very good salsas (one was pretty hot). Had their famous pork tacos - very good, with the usual refried beans (with a radish on top!), rice, lettuce, tomatoes, and marinated onions(!). Decided to come here instead of the popular locations across the street with a group of friends for a weekday lunch. Came early, around 11:30 AM and was able to pull into the parking lot and find a spot instantly. We walked in and were greeted and seated right away! The staff was friendly and our waitress was great, glasses stayed full and she was very attentive. We started with queso & the salsa, both were spot on. From there, I ordered the chicken kabobs, and boy was I impressed. In my mind, I envisioned a few small kabobs, but I was way off- the order came with two HUGE kabobs! I got black beans and guac on the side too! The kabobs had grilled chicken, onions, tomatoes and bell peppers- perfect for me since I'm trying to watch those carbs! I even had enough for lunch the next day, so keep in mind portion sizes are rather large here. My friends all had leftovers too! At the end of our meal, the owner (I'm assuming) came over to check in and asked about our visit. I was very impressed with not only the food, but the service and the our overall visit! Being raised in south Texas has spoiled me with Mexican/TexMex food. The most frustrating thing is trying to find comparable taste and authentic quality in new locations. Merida Restaurant, a mom and pop business, exceeds my expectations in every way from service, food to atmosphere. I'll even plan my travels (since I live out of state) when I come through Houston to get here in the morning for their massive breakfast tacos. I mean one taco has about 3-4 eggs in it! Well worth the money IMO. If I'm here for lunch it's the carne guisada or tacos cochinitas for me. Theretofore, I love this place and I'd give it 6 stars if I could. :) read more

In this day of rising prices I decided to go to a favorite of mine even though it's a long drive.. They are obviously saving money by the use of a paper menu with extremely small print and very dim lighting... So me and my mom drove over there @ 11:00am on Sunday... my mom could not read the many and I had to use the light off of my cell phone so she could read it... the waitress noticed this and brought a small hand held magnifying glass for mom to use along with her prescription glasses..( I though it was very thoughtful that they had a magnifying glass for customers to use...not ) remember this is straight up noon on a Sunday... (never had this happen before at any restaurant) (a cashier/owner noticing that we were just sitting there so she assumed that we were waiting an extremely long time for the check when in reality we were waiting on our order) When I got my food I had to ask the waitress where my charra beans were and she told me that my order didn't come with beans.. on my plate was pico, guacamole two tacos and a large portion of rice... I thought that rice and beans were spoken of in the same breath.. I never had a plate that comes with only rice but no beans so after I told the waitress that is was on the menu she agreed and brought me a bowl of room temp bean soup (a la charra)... a few minutes later the cashier/owner came by and asked if everything was ok?... I am usually the silent type not saying anything but a couple of years ago I decided to change...(Don't ask me if you don't want an honest answer is my new policy)... I watched as she took my beans to the microwave and proceeded to nuke them..I kinda thought that they had a pot full of already cooked beans and I would simply get a new fresh bowl not a recooked/nuked bowl As I was preparing my Carbon Tacos I noticed something strange about the meat.. Merida was empty.I liked the decor.It looked like very Mexico.I opened the menu.I found that the restaurant specialized in Yucatan cuisine.I went to google and learned Merida was the capital city of Yucatan.Cancun is the most famous city in Yucatan. I ordered Cochinita Pibil.I got salsa and chips.After I finished one basket of salsa and chips, I got Cochinita Pibil. I liked it. The size was big.Then, the server brought one more basket of chips.My stomach was full.The server brought a check.I was surprised.It said around $21. First time trying the lunch/dinner menu. I got the carne guisada and my boyfriend ordered the chicken mole. Both classic dishes! Let's start with the carne guisada- it was really tasty. The meat was tender and the rice and beans were on point and not dried out like most Mexican restaurants. TBH- this was my first time actually finishing the rice and beans aside from being at home. The chicken mole was good. The mole sauce could've been better though and less watered down. The chicken was seasoned very nicely so the chicken basically saved the dish. Upon tasting the salsa I decided to order queso in an attempt to enjoy the chips, but alas was disappointed again with watery cheese that doesn't stick to the chip. Queso was too thin and plain - looked like cheese-colored water, with nothing else added to it. I got the enchiladas. Tortillas were dry, chicken was very dry. Rice and beans were standard, but those are hard to screw up. Overall everything was subpar. Probably won't come back here again. I'll try a different Mexican restaurant. So I I end this by saying, I will never return here for breakfast during these hours . Their loaded breakfast tacos are really burritos. I could eat them every day for the rest of my life. Also, they have the best refried beans in all of East Downtown. Alright, I will nip this one in the bud. I HAD to go somewhere for Mexican food close to my house because I had a guest from out of town here, and Ninfas was ridiculously packed. Who knew they took reservations... not I. Who knew they only took a certain number of reservations which already filled up by Saturday at noon... not I. (both of which are shameful since I go there so often) So off we went to Merida to try it out. It was recommended by my neighbor, so I thought it was worth a shot. So in I go with my family friend from Japan, my roommate and my parents. Our friend from Japan is a Mexican food novice, so we got him the Merida Special which was basically 3 different Yucatan specialties all on one plate. I was jealous. He loved it, and did what he joked he always does when he travels to America: ate entirely too much. I got the Carne Guisada, which was cubed steak marinated in this mild sauce. It had a decent flavor, but the meat was only just slightly above room temperature, so I was hugely disappointed. My roommate got the chicken tamales which I tried and they were absolutely delicious. We also shared a pitcher of margaritas which will definitely get a second try soon. Oh, but by "shared" I mean my parents didn't want any, our Japanese friend had one glass and quit, my roommate was sensible since she was driving across town and only had one-ish... so I did my best to take down the pitcher. Wow. I am lucky I live close and didn't have to drive. I usually don't even like margaritas on the rocks, but ya... they did the trick. All in all it gets 4 stars. Authentically Mexican, uniquely Yucateco, hands down one of the best restaurants in all of Houston. Twenty years ago, while a student at U of H looking for an inexpensive meal, I came upon Merida's Restaurant located on Navigation trying Cochinita Pibil for the first time. That meal forever changed my outlook on food, realizing more than just tacos eating Mexican varies considerably with each region, in this case, from the Yucatán peninsula. Most importantly eating is about culture, comfort, love and family the basis for sabor a la Mexicana and ultimately the nourishment food provides. This past week, suggesting to the wife Merida's after visiting family in Houston's tough Eastside Barrio, promising she will not be disappointed, yet internally hoping it still is from what I remember, she agrees. As soon as we walked in, I blushed as the memories gushed for the restaurant looks and feels as it did twenty years ago. Accenting the walls are decorative pyramids, iguanas, and rainforest paintings. The ambiance is festive, not touristy, more of a smaller divey place frequented by locals on the Mayan Riviera for a pleasant dinner. We both order perfectly delicious Margarita's! The alcohol to mix ratio is balanced, with fresh squeezed lime juice accenting high-quality tequila. The salt on the rim is the cherry on top for this liquid delight. The chips are good, but the salsa is disappointing. Very tomato-y, very red, and it lacked spice similar to canned tomato puree. Recognizing his error, the waiter apologetically returns replacing the tomato sauce with a freshly made salsa guarantying satisfaction. It consisted of chopped onions, cilantro, and garlic, blended with tomatillos, jalapenos and seasoned with salt. It had kick but was not unbearable a perfect companion to the chips. (BTW I'm guessing that red salsa is their non-spicy version, avoid it). Honestly, for me a menu was unnecessary blindly ordering Cochinita Pibil, the wife playing it safe orders the Tacos al Carbon. However, when the food arrived her eyes and mouth widened with a regretting twinkle and gasp. It was not that the Tacos were terrible they were quite good, only they were underwhelming compared to the star Cochinita plate consisting of black beans garnished with decorative radish, rice, garden salad, marinated red onions, and braised slow-roasted pork. Yes, it is as I remember, paradise on a plate. The meal is filling, savory, and succulent. I wholeheartedly recommend visiting Merida's for experiencing Yucateco style dishes without having to fly down to the peninsula. Enjoy! read more

I was excited to see that they had the cochinita pibil so of course we ordered the plate and the tacos. I will say that the flour taco tasted the best, however they were drenched in grease. Usually cochinita pibil is served in a some broth but this was just really greasy. I cant say I particularly loved or hated the plate. It was just ok for me. I still cant decided if I liked the chips and salsa, I mean I did eat them all but that's true of any chips that are placed in front of my face. The salsas were a bit too watery for me but still held a certain kind of flavor that would be enjoyed by some. Overall, this place is good but there are so many other better places on this block alone that would be a better choice. read more

I'm here to give Merida a good review. My partner and I eat here every weekend for breakfast. No, it's not my mother's Mexican breakfast, but it's very near close. The flour tortillas are the absolute best, handmade and ALWAYS made to order. We do frequent there for dinner and I do admit, they have very, very heavy dinner offerings, however, it's nothing short of what's expected from Tex-Mex. I read through the complaints here and found most were about non-traditional dishes, pricing (really? maybe you shouldn't eat out at all if you complain about pricing here), and service (really? If you want 5-star service, march your but across the street to El Tiempo or Ninfa's, though you don't nearly receive service equal to those price points). The owners are probably trying to explore other dishes that are probably great tasting across the street. Anyone with good common sense and experience eating @ a hole in the wall place like this should know not to try it. Stick to your Tex-Mex basics and you'll be happy here. If you want great tasting bar drinks go across the street. Yes, Merida has a full bar but they do not employ a bartender. read more

So I first went here because it was my favorite food, really close to my house, and advertised happy hour margaritas. I went and fell in love! I come here about once a week. Everything that I have tried has been wonderful. A few of my favs are the flautas, all of the enchilada/taco combos, and the charro beans and chimichanga are to die far. Their margaritas are great, especially for the price! Sometimes they have live music on the weekends and it can get pretty packed, so we try and go during the week. Breakfast is really good too! Only been a couple of times but plan on more. I am always weary that food is not as good when catered or in large quantity, but not this place! My bachelorette party went here for dinner before going out in Houston. They put up some extra decorations, had everything set up perfectly, bottomless pitchers of margaritas, and the food was excellent. This is my go-to Mexican food and margarita and I have so much fun introducing friends and out of town guests, especially when they see where the place is! You know when you've got great memories of a place from long ago, and then you revisit it and it's so bad that you can't decide if your memories were wrong or if the place just fell into steep decline? Yeah, that was my experience at Merida. I remember coming here in the early 80s and standing in line to get into this place. Flash forward to today, when I visited this lonely, decrepit building with only 13 other people inside (including employees and my party). I'd invited 6 family members to join me, based on my memories of this place from years ago. BIG mistake. I arrived 15 minutes early so I could secure a table, but needn't have worried since there were only two 4-tops in use. I had a drink at the bar, told the guy behind the bar (who seemed to be the owner/manager) that I was expecting 6 more people, and waited for my party to arrive. While he was pulling tables together for our group, I told him to make sure that I received the bill. With only 4 other diners in the place, I thought this would be something he could remember. BIG mistake. We were seated and got chips/salsa right away. We put in food and drink orders, and I have to admit the service was pretty good (not the same guy as behind the bar, where did this guy come from?). TB had the cochinita pibil, which looked overcooked and dry. He was gracious with his comments, but only ate about 4 bites. Kids had quesadillas, which were fine. I had the snapper Veracruz, which is something I often make at home. Theirs was a watered-down sauce with maybe one olive on the entire plate. The fish tasted like it came from the freezer compliments of Sysco. The tortillas were slightly stale. Seriously, I wouldn't serve this food to my dog. I spent the entire meal apologizing for the food. Then the bill came and it was promptly left in the middle of the table. WTF?? How hard is it to understand "Make sure I get the bill"?? I guess that when a restaurant's limelight fades and it drifts into obscurity, it has to sacrifice quality in order to help the cash flow. I've eaten here many times and I have to say that this place is fantastic. The waitstaff and owners are excellent. The food is perfect as well. We were initially going to eat at Ninfa's Original Restaurant which is a block down but it was packed. I had seen Merida many times as I had driven by to eat at Villa Arcos and finally decided to try it and since that day, I've been back many times for breakfast and dinner! It has become one of my favorite spots. Oh...and look closely at the mural that was painted back in the 70's. There is a tiny little naked guy on there peeing and a naked girl watching him. First visit here was for breakfast after a workout down the street. I was being "good" and ordered eggs, a few of the other ladies ordered pancakes. I was so jealous when our food arrived! Don't get me wring, the eggs were delicious but those pancakes looked amazing. Two Saturdays later, after that same workout session, I stopped in to try those awesome looking pancakes. OMG, they were so fluffy and delicious that Merida is now my favorite pancake place. The bacon is good too. Fast forward to this weekend....my 8 yr old niece is staying with me and I knew just where to take her for breakfast. We orderd migas and pancakes to share. That was in Friday. Saturday and Sunday she has been pleading with me to come back for more. We are back, Sunday for brunch and ordering another round of migas and pancakes to share! Note the service is not 5 stars, a bit slow and you can't be shy to grab someone when you need something. However they are very friendly and I have never had an order be wrong. read more
