Growing up on the east end, I have fond memories of visiting this place with my family. During the baseball season, I decided to take my family here for dinner before the game. It was slow inside and a few of the tables were dirty (hadn't been wiped down from previous customers). We sat down to eat and were quickly greeted my our waitress. She brought out the chips and salsa that where unfortunately inedible due to being stale and old. Service was slow from that point on, never got a refill on my tea. The food took awhile to come out. My family and I ate here on Friday 5/10/13, to kick off my Mother's Day Weekend. My husband called before our arrival to confirm they served Mojitos. Their mojitos and my experience of a Mojito are drastically different. Lemon juice and rum?? Their offering was horrible!! Another Mexican eatery who can not do a Mojito!! The food was good, I will say. The guitar player was excessively loud and as a result, conversation was difficult to hear at our table. I live in Eado in a nice gated townhome community. This place is walking distance from my home. I have been once because Ninfas was so crowded and honestly I will never go again. Granted we decided to have a dinner super late on a weekend, and El Tiempo Cantina had a long wait. We came here since it's a local restaurant. I'm a pescatarian, but I was looking for some vegetarian options. They didn't have anything for vegetarians, and when I asked if they could accommodate me with even some spinach and cheese enchiladas, she said no. Worst Mexican food I've ever had. I ordered online; from yelp took almost 2 hrs to be delivered. I had a Chimichanga $9.95, says fajita but was actually ground meat, & they forgot to put my Pico De Gallo, sour cream & guacamole SO basically ground meat wrapped in a tortilla. My husband had the "Nachos Imperial" $7.95 and was just chips with cheese they forgot all the toppings (also said fajita but was ground meat as well). This is NOT good TEX-MEX and by all means NOT authentic. I will never order from here again and do not recommend. read more

Regular Tex-Mex done right! The service is always excellent, the food is as authentic as you'd expect Tex-Mex to be, and the atmosphere is great! This neighborhood is definitely coming up, and you don't have to be scared to go there at night anymore. The prices are great, especially considering the prices of nearby Ninfa's and El Tiempo (which are related). The restaurant also is super helpful in the community, even supporting local educational programs. I'd be surprised to see another local restaurant do that! This is a place I love to visit, and unless something major changes, I'll keep coming back! read more

After seeing some of the more recent posts I hesitated to go to Merida's again. I think it has been more than 4 years since I went. Like some of the more recent posters I had been to Merida's going way back (at least 15 years). I'll get to the bottom line now. We went and it was great just as it has been every time I have gone. To give you some perspective, my last name is Peniche. While a lot of people think it's either an Italian or French name, it is actually Hispanic. My father was from Progeso, Mexico in Yucatan. As I understand the "Peniche" history, the first Peniches came to Yucatan via Spain (and my family in particular was Spain, to Canary Islands, one generation, to Yucatan) arriving in the small village of Espita in around 1900. Espita is between Cancun and Merida. Years ago our family drove through and stopped on our way to Merida. I understand the high speed highway from Cancun to Merida bypasses Espita now. Anyway, Peniche is a very common name within the Yucatecan Peninsula and we have many relatives there in Merida, Progreso and the nearby state of Quintana Roo. As kids growing up as "Army brats", but mostly in Virginia, we thought "Mexican food" meant panuchos, salbutes and cochinita pibil and the like. It wasn't till I came to Texas in 1981 that I learned about Tex-Mex and that was what most "Americans" think Mexican food is. My brother was in town last Saturday and we were reminiscing about Dad and the Yucatan. He was going home today so last night we went to Merida's to wrap up a nice family visit. In our group was my wife, from Colombia, who had never had Yucatecan food, her son, my son, my brother and our Mom. Everyone thought it was excellent. My brother had the cochinita pibil and my wife, Mom and I each had the Merida Special. OK, so the boys had quesadillas, not wanting to partake of Yucatecan cuisine. If two of you are going, I recommend one get the Merida Special (a mix of panuchos, salbutes, an empanada, a "pibil" style taco and black beans), while the other get cochinita pibil. Our waitress was nice and attentive. As authentic Yucatecans (OK, we are half as Mom is from Kentucky), my brother and I heartily recommend Merida's for the Yucatecan food. I imagine the Tex-Mex and other Mexican food is good too but to truly experience Merida's, and what sets it apart from others (and yes, I like Pico's, El Tiempo and the original Ninfa's), is the Yucatecan food. That is why you should go there. And my Colombian wife thought it was great too, as did my Mom who learned to cook Yucatecan food so many years ago for my Dad. read more

Wonderful old school Mexican restaurant right outside of downtown. Great food and the people are very nice. Located next to one of the oldest churches and cemeteries in Texas and the city just redid the street to have a walking park on the median to walk to all the restaurants down the street. Yelp said that restaurant delivers, but after painstaking placing the delivery order, I got a call from Eat24 saying that the restaurant "did not have enough drivers tonight" to make the delivery. Very disappointing. On a Saturday night for crying out loud. Eat24 called and advised me of this within 5 minutes of placing the order, so that part of it worked well. read more

This was my first visit to this restaurant and I am glad that I stopped by. The restaurant was slow on this particular Thursday night and as a result of this, I received first class service. I ordered the Beef Fijitas that comes with Charros Beans and Guacamole. This was some of the beef figitas that I have enjoyed in a very long time. This plate was very reasonalbly priced when compared to the Tourist Trap that is three blocks to the east of the restaurant. I got to enjoy the happy hour margarita that runs until 9:00 PM at this wonderful restaurant. I will stop by again the next time that I am in the area. read more

I heard about this place when I was looking for good breakfast tacos, but when I went, they had so many other breakfast options that I didn't even try what I had originally been on the hunt for. We went around 9, so it was still pretty quiet. By the end of our meal, service was slowing down because the other tables were filling up. The chips were warm and crispy, but the salsa was nothing special. The horchata was really good, and I had almost drained it before the food arrived. The migas were just how I like them - only eggs and chips, but I know that other people might feel like they're lacking the usual onions and peppers mixed in. The sides, including refried beans, potatoes, and bacon, were decent but not great. The tortillas, both flour and corn, were hot and fresh. The huevos y fajitas was also delicious, with well-seasoned meat that came out very tender. The food, though very good, did not stand out from other great Tex-Mex breakfasts, but the prices were very affordable. I'll be back to check out that breakfast taco I had been craving. read more

I went to eat here on Saturday before the Dynamo game. The service was slow, I had to ask if we were going to receive our food. We were seating before two tables that were seated around us and both tables got their food before we did. Had to ask for a water refill, as the waiter was not attentive. When the food did arrive, all three orders were incorrect. the only good thing was that you get 20% off your order with your Dynamo ticket on game day...but you won't get what you ordered and you might miss the game because of the slow service. with so many other Mexican options, I will never go here again. read more

First time here, looking for a break from the high prices of the chain Mexican restaurants just down the street. It's what you would expect, an older hole in the wall restaurant mainly serving locals. The food was good and fairly priced for what you got. We thought the drinks were fairly priced as well until we got the bill. We ordered a large margarita which was advertised on a display board as you entered as $10.95. First problem, very little if any tequila in the drink. Second problem was when we got the bill with a price adjustment of $4.00. We asked the waitress and she explained that this was a premium for the 'fresh lime' margarita that we ordered. She never explained this up front and was not mentioned anywhere on the menu. We complained to no avail. You get one time to make a good first impression and this didn't do it. Won't be back. read more

Food is among the best mexican in Houston always good on any given day. Too bad they get over looked by being across the road from original ninfas, and el tiempo. Salsa is always fresh. Huevos Rancheros are are always done right, bacon could be crispier and coffee needs improvement. My favorite dish is cochinita pibil. My son loves their cheese enchiladas. Stopped in for lunch today. Not the best idea but very hungry. The service was awful. The waitress dropped off a basket of hard crumbs for chips and left. Had to get our own menus, she came back and took our order after a while. When our food was given, one plate at a time, we sat and waited for forks that she gave us from her hand, no big deal to me but I know that's unsanitary. She left and we never saw her again. The food was not good to say the least. The rice was watered down and no flavor. The beans, the three of us had refried beans, one of us had a scoop of dried up play dough and the other two were watered down. There are far better Mexican food restaurants around. read more

A mom and pop shop with unique Yucatán cuisine. It's been family run since the 70s. One of my favorite spots in Eado outside of down town Houston. Merida's is one of our favorite restaurants in town! I initially fell in love with their chicken mole, but have since tried other dishes on their menu as well and have been consistently pleased with everything I've had. Great food, bad customer service. I ordered a plate that came with scrambled eggs, but asked for them to be over-easy instead. The server said okay, but when they brought my food it was scrambled. I told the server, and he told me they couldn't do over-easy eggs with that plate. (Dunno why he told me okay when I ordered.) I then asked him if I could just have the scrambled ones taken back and just replace them with over-easy eggs (this seems like a simple fix??) but he got the manager who came up to me and kept asking what I had ordered bc that plate didn't come w over-easy eggs. I told her I didn't remember the plate name, but I had asked for over easy. She then told me "NEXT TIME, read the menu before ordering" (umm what kind of management??) I gently reminded her I HAD read it and that's why I asked for them to be changed when I ordered. I'm really not sure why it was so difficult to take some damn eggs off the plate and replace them.. once they finally gave in and gave me some over-easy eggs everything was delicious. The wait staff is sometimes overloaded, but always friendly and responsive. This is the place to go for a solid delicious Mexican meal without waiting in lines. I discovered this place from Eat24. They deliver to my house. I'm pretty lazy and pretty hungry so I'm always down for delivery. Unfortunately, the food was not good. Beef enchiladas came with rice and beans. I could barely eat any of it. Rice was dry, beans were like clay, beef enchiladas were super orange greasy and nothing had flavor. I went here for dinner with my girlfriend and it was pretty decent. We got a shrimp cocktail to start with, chicken fajitas, and flautas. The fajitas were alright, but I only got two flour tortillas with my meal and I had eaten the rest of the chicken by the time he came back so I finished off my fajitas with no tortillas. Also, the onions weren't carmelized at all so I didn't bother with them since I don't really care for raw onions. Overall pretty good, but nothing out of this world. read more
