I was contacted to schedule a consultation by a designer at Arjay's who happens to be the Graber provider in our area that's partnered with Costco. By the time we received a phone call we had already priced out Norman shutters with a local dealer and decided to go with the Hunter Douglas instead. I wanted to call the Arjay showroom to thank them for following up and let them know we are no longer interested. However, since they're a local business and had taken the time to call I was going to ask if they carry the Hunter Douglas line because we were ready to move forward with the ordering process. The woman who answered was cordial at first until I mentioned we had been contacted from a Costco referral. She cut me off before I could finish and let me know "I'm just a Costco person" and "no I cannot be considered a regular client and switch product lines, I belong to Costco!" and they don't give any other discounts on the lines they carry other than that "budget Graber line" and that Hunter Douglas was much more expensive and "doesn't do discounts". Never once did I ask for or even use the words discount, special, promo. I let her finish speaking because I'm not rude even though I couldn't believe how she was speaking to a potential customer. I calmly let her know she misunderstood. I am not interested in Graber, my husband had filled out the request. I was just calling to say please don't continue calling us, we're set on Hunter Douglas. Yes it is pricier, but that's fine it's in our price point. I had thought I'd offer them the business if they carried Hunter Douglas, but I can see now I'm mistaken. Immediately she started to back peddle and say "no it's just that all I meant was you're in our system as a Costco client, but we can probably get Hunter Douglas for you!" Ohhhh but I thought no exceptions could be made??? I said no thank you, there's an authorized Hunter Douglas dealer in Ventura with a very friendly showroom that I'll be working with. Moral of the story just be nice, don't be quick to judge. There were so many ways your receptionist could have worded things to ask questions without making assumptions or being insulting. Maybe let someone else answer phones. This is the first person your potential clients are interacting with.
