They also have ice cream and refillable water at all times. They even offer towels. The workers are always kind and helpful. The pool area is always clean and welcoming. Everyone who attends and goes to Merritt Clubs is always fun and nice. It's always a great vibe, especially in the summer. I would not recommend Merritt Athletic Club based on my family's experience. What concerned me most was what I perceived as a lack of safety and accountability around the pool during summer camp. In our experience, children were not consistently supervised in a way that protected other paying members, and we felt that the camps were prioritized over the regular membership. When we raised safety concerns after an incident involving an unsupervised child, we felt that responsibility was shifted onto us rather than the situation being addressed. We also observed lifeguards allowing behavior that, in our opinion, created unnecessary safety risks for other swimmers. My interactions with management were equally disappointing. Diane, the manager, spoke to me in a manner I found unprofessional during our discussion, and I recorded that interaction because I was so uncomfortable. When I later decided to cancel my membership, I expected to simply complete the cancellation paperwork. Instead, I was questioned by Liz in front of other people about why I was leaving and where I planned to go next, which I felt was inappropriate and embarrassing. The final comment that confirmed my decision to leave was being told that these issues would improve once school started because the summer camps would be over. That reinforced my impression that the camp program was being prioritized over the experience and safety concerns of year-round members. I've been a member for a month so far. The gym is clean and I have enjoyed the classes I've taken so far. I also enjoyed personal training - you get two free sessions to start. I enjoy the pool and feel so much joy going down the water slide and the lap pool, especially before noon. The adult swim time is an awesome 15 minutes at the top of every hour. At first I thought it was unnecessary, but it's great and much needed, because the pool is overwhelmed with kiddos mostly without direct adult supervision. They're splash and cannonball happy which has led to a wet book and a splashed kindle lol. They're young and don't know but adults should. The pool is also full of day campers after 12:15 this summer. I've found quiet (surprisingly) near the kiddie (under 4) area and me and my books are splash free sitting on the edge of the pool near the water slides. read more

I love this gym! It's another "family oriented" Merritt club, such as the towson location, unlike the canton location . Everything is brand new and very modern from the pool to the cardio cinema! The group fitness instructors are the highlight of the place. They have the best Zumba instructors in town and once a month they take it outside at the avenue! I've been a member of Merritt for years now and while I like the clubs, my instructors are amazing sometimes, depending on what location you go to the equipment needs to be updated. Specifically at the White marsh location I wish we could have upgraded version of the current spin bikes that we use especially because that's a class that I take multiple times a week and when I go to other gyms, they've had two or three different types of bikes at this point especially with the current rate increase. read more

I started using this location as well recently because it is so close. The classes they offer have all been wonderful with the nicest instructors. There is a good variety of classes offered every day of the week. 3 studios all with a fantastic sound system to really get you energized. Great facility, but extremely questionable service in areas. So, My family and I have recently become members and have been enjoying the gym for the most part. The cleaning staff do a great job of maintaining the cleanliness of the place and the childcare center has great play area. However, the pool staff is often lax as other guests participate in often questionable activities. My daughter was recently hit in the chest by a football being tossed around by a group and my wife was concussed today by another flying object. Upon notifying the management, these injuries were downplayed further adding insult to literal injury. I don't know if I will be renewing. read more

The White Marsh location is one of my favorites. It's generally clean and the showers have great water pressure. There is plenty of equipment, including multiple squat racks and flat benches, as well as treadmills, cardio and weight machines. Some times are busier than others, but that's every gym on earth. I've got two complaints, however. First, there are not enough classes. It seems like the cycling studio sits empty a lot, and it would be nice to have more 6pm and 7pm cycling classes, as well as yoga and pilates offerings. My second complaint is more about the people that go there. I honestly don't understand why people don't re-rack their weights properly. I don't often see folks doing curls in the squat rack, but would it kill you to put your 45lb plate with the rest of the 45lb plates, and not over top of the 25s and 10s? read more

I have been a member, along with 5 other family members, for 7 years. Today, we find out the rules at the pool were apparently never enforced. My 7 year old wears floaters because they make her feel comfortable, she swims fairly well. Apparently, I must be in arms length of her at all times because she chooses to wear floaters. I said I am not able to, so I will have her just take them off. I was then told I couldn't do that either. This place pushed personal training on me when I joined. First of all, it's $79/month for a membership, which is so steep considering what other options are around. Still, they have great options like classes and a pool in the summer months, so I bit the bullet with the intention of attending classes with other members. When I came in to finish registering, they pointed out that as a member, I had two free sessions with a trainer and scheduled it for me. When I showed up, it wasn't a session, it was a sales pitch. I, being a known idiot, signed up for the whole kit and caboodle - personal training once a week for six months. I got home, looked at the contract, and realized there was no way I was paying another $196.00 a month for the gym. I immediately emailed to cancel it after the first month so it wouldn't be reoccurring. I ended up going to three sessions with the trainer - 2 free, 1 paid for. I was terrible every. single. time. I'm just super out of shape for the exercises that we were doing. And the sales pitch was totally wrong anyway. We never did additional fitness tests, I never got my exercise plan from the trainer. My trainer was very lovely and kind but it felt like neither of us knew what we were supposed to be doing. I had scheduled my fourth session and the trainer cancelled. We never rescheduled. I have avoided the gym for the past few months because I don't want to see the sales guy and be pressured about the training. I emailed them today to inquire about a refund for the three sessions I haven't used, but instead, got an email from the sales/head of training about rescheduling my appointments. I feel too intimidated to go to this gym anymore. I'm paying $79 a month for essentially nothing. For the remainder of my contract, I plan to use the Towson gym instead. This experience has mostly been of my own doing based on my anxieties and insecurities, but no one at this gym has been immediately helpful. I'm sure they work on commission, but I don't want to be accosted by a sales person when trying to figure out my physical fitness. The gym itself is fine. It's honestly nothing special. There are always clean towels here, and now they have different size towels for either shower or workout use. Lots of free classes you can join, family friendly with a full kids zone and swimming pool! I met my personal trainer, Courtney, here a few months ago and training with her since February has been very beneficial for my health and fitness goals! This gym in general has a lot of very well educated staff that can also offer nutrition advice besides workout and personal training, so if you're looking for a major lifestyle change look no further than Merritt! We've been members at this location for a while. It's nice and new and usually clean. Except when it isn't. Pool: This is what my family uses the most. Especially now that they are offering summer only memberships, the gym and especially the pool are far too crowded. In fact, it has been so unpleasant that we have only gone to the pool late in the evenings all summer. There are no seats or shade (even though it seems that almost everyone I talk to says they have also complained about the lack of shade and we are all told they are getting umbrellas--must be coming from overseas because I've been waiting 2 years on these umbrellas...). We even had to leave recently because a life guard told us my kid couldn't eat outside food (a lunchable, Twix bar, and vitamin water). He was hungry, I hate the restaurant there (kind of expensive for what you get, sloooow, rude staff...), so we left rather than me telling my kid he couldn't eat. Ridiculous. I get that they want us to use the restaurant on site, but it's not like we brought in a pizza. Honestly, I definitely knocked the gym a star because of the restaurant. I know they are a separate entity, but Maria Ds has negatively affected my experience there many times. And where is this done they've been promising since day one? It makes me feel like they are willing to tell us whatever to appease members or get you to join, but stuff doesn't seem to happen. (I also felt like this about the 24-hours, but they did finally go 24-hours.) There are also so many people not watching their kids. Small kids too. One woman is at the pool every night and leave her 3 kids (one younger than 2 I would guess) alone while she goes to physical therapy from what I understand. On particularly busy days, the pool deck is a wreck. The pool guests have no problem leaving wet towels, trash, food and even dirty diapers wherever they want and I guess they expect the lifeguards to pick up after them. It's gross. Classes: I like the classes, and the schedules and how full they are has definitely gotten better. Equipment: I usually use the exercise machines. There are plenty and usually most are in working order. As for the weights, my husband says they are often left out of place and the area can be very crowded. He actually avoids working out or cuts it short sometimes because it's too crowded. My son loves the kids area although it can depend on what other kids are there. There used to be a game room with stuff that was better for older kids, but for some reason they took it out. He has also enjoyed a couple of the camps. I guess this is probably pretty typical for gyms, but it really bugs me that everyone seems to be paying a different monthly fee. Some higher and some lower than me. I have been a member of Merritt in White Marsh for about six months. What I Like It's the newest and nicest gym in the area. I like that it is more serious than Planet Fitness (e.g., it has power racks, grunting is allowed, etc.) but not a total meathead gym. The equipment is all immaculate; new, shiny, well kept. There are a lot of good classes; mostly aerobics or yoga. The personal trainers are hit or miss but there are a couple of good ones (ask for Kim). Though crowded and full of children, the pool is great in the summertime. The gym area itself is not usually super crowded, so you rarely have to wait for a piece of equipment. They also have child care, which is a huge plus for those with kids. What I Don't Like I don't like that it is very expensive. I pay $130/mo for me and my wife. That's a lot of money considering gyms like PF or Spunk are charging $10/mo/person. I don't like that they don't have the small details down for that high price. Example 1: Never enough clips for securing plates on barbells. Example 2: They don't buy new ab wheels when people (apparently) steal them. When you pay that much per month, you expect that these minutia will be taken care of. I don't like that I have to pay the full price when I don't utilize all the services. For example: I don't have kids, so I should be able to buy a membership package that is less expensive because it excludes childcare. Finally, I don't like the one year contract. Most gyms (even non-PF ones) are going month-to-month now with no commitment. I wish Merritt would do the same. Summary (TLDR) Merritt is a luxury gym. It is very nice and offers a lot of features, but is very expensive in return. Despite this, they can't seem to spend small amounts of money to fix minor issues. As the first to review, I want to make it PERFECTLY CLEAR that 3 stars is NOT because the club isn't beautiful and shiny and new. The staff is nice enough, though a bit overwhelmed with the influx of new people and trying to show everyone around. I was able to get a free week because a friend is a member. What I found is the equipment is UBER fancy, I mean touch screen EVERYTHING. Substantial weight area, tons of cardio equipment. Enough space for several classes to be going on at once. The classes were PACKED, and I wasn't able to get myself into them. Now, I've taken group fitness classes before, and I'm familiar with Les Mills, so if they hold true then they're going to be a good class. The area for kids makes me want to be a kid again, think McDonald's play place meets an arcade meets childcare. I didn't go in, but I could see it from the cardio area on the second floor. Outside pool for laps, a family pool for the kids and areas to lay out in the sun. To summarize the PRICE is what has me bringing it down. You would think that with all these amenities that it would be worth more, and I assume that's their business model. What concerns me is that when I'm able to find time to lay out in the sun, I can guarantee that half of White Marsh will be there with me... and I won't get a chair. Same with the classes. If I can't get into the group fitness or the pool what this becomes is a fancy shmancy Planet Fitness, only $120/month more expensive for a household of two. This is geared towards families, I can guarantee it. They'll benefit the most out of the family package pricing. I'm not saying don't go, I'm just saying I don't think it's going to be for me. read more

The gym itself is nice and clean for the most part. The staff up front by the entrance are friendly and helpful. The only negative is that several times a week there are no towels in the women locker room. Oh one more thing lol some of the guests never put their weights after using which sucks especially for women who needs to put back four 45 pound weight when they only need like two instead of the six that's hanging. I feel like this something the staff/trainers/employees should keep an eye out and either restock the weights on the correct weight shelf or speak to the members via email or letter or in person. read more

So I agree with everything with what Sarah said, except value. The only other comparable club in this area is the monstrosity that I'm sure will now soon go out of business around the corner. There are good gyms, but this is the only other all encompassing gym around. You pay for bells and whistles and this place delivers. Now when I lived in Falls Church (in 2004) and was a member of the WAC, I paid $95 for a single membership. For a family membership of 4, I don't even pay 50% more today than I did in 2004. So it might not be a bargain, per se (I mean depending on what you value), but it's a price tag that I think is justifiable and unfair that its rating suffered because of it. read more

The gym was beautiful, new, and had great features! The locker rooms were clean, lockers were spacious, and they even had a sauna in there! I did notice that this gym has a bar, which is unlike any gym I have ever been to before. It seems like they were trying to go for gym/ cool hangout place, which is a fun idea. I also appreciated that there was a kids play area, which I would imagine to be a big plus for anybody wanting a place to entertain their children while they were working out. The equipment is new, the staff is friendly, and the classes are all really fun. Best of all, it's located really close to the Costco, so I can get shopping and a workout in all in 1 trip! The locker room is beautiful and boasts a sauna in addition to usual amenities. The best part of the gym is the dark and private movie room. Cardio flies by when you get engrossed in a movie! During the yelp event I thought the cycling instructor from Jersey was awesome! The only reason I didn't give 5 was because I was given a hard time about using the 30 day pass I was given at a yelp event because I had joined a friend at the gym over a year ago. They allowed me to workout that day, but told me I would have to speak to a manager to come back as I was "flagged" in the system. It made me uncomfortable. read more

This gym is a life saver for me. Since having a baby, it's been so hard to get to the gym and make time for myself. With this club, I'm able to walk in the door, get greeted by the nicest people ever (who somehow have remembered my name after only being a 2x a week visitor), get a sincere smile from the man vacuuming (they're CONSTANTLY cleaning while I'm there and it shows!).. the staff in the kid zone have helped my daughter feel extremely comfortable in there since day one! I am a stay at home Mom so my daughter isn't used to being dropped off anywhere. Within a week, she was RUNNING in to play! The girls in the locker room folding towels go out of their way to say hello (shoutout to Destiny who introduced herself and always tells me to have a good workout)... and the icing on the cake is going to Jennifer Brock's yoga class Her voice, the lighting, the music, the entire practice is relaxing, challenging, encouraging.. simply perfect. Tara is also an awesome, supportive and fun class instructor if you're looking for something more high energy! The pool is beautiful and the food at the connecting restaurant is really yummy and reasonably priced. It does get a little overly crowded in the summer with camps and birthday parties of people who are non-members and that can be frustrating.. but overall, I can't say enough about this gym and all their employees. My family has been members for several years. This summer, we've noticed a strange, chilly vibe from staff. Kind of a "gaslighting" effect, in that you get this feeling that something's off, but you second guess it. Then I personally had a disturbing experience at the front desk where the person working asked me to wait not once, but twice. No one else was around. No apparent reason to sideline me. In fact, the second time, the employee had already started to address my issue when she switched from me to someone who had only just walked up. In the absence of other apparent reasons, you're left to wonder--did the employee make these choices because of my skin color? My sex? Be aware that there could be an informal Social Justice initiative going on with the staff toward customers of a perceived social identity. My guard is now up, and I'll be politely expecting equal treatment w every interaction. I encourage people of all skin colors and genders to do the same. read more

My fiancé and I signed up and were very excited because we had heard great things about the club. We went for a walk through it was so nice and spacious, nothing like any other gym we had gone to. We signed up and started to go, we were set up to speak to Jason so that we could set up some sessions with a personal trainer. We were paired up with a great guy named Terell, he was amazing and really understood the path that my fiancé and I wanted to take in order to get in shape for our upcoming wedding. We trained with him for about two sessions. He sent us helpful tips on eating and so on. Unfortunately he ended up leaving the company, he called us informed us of this and told us to contact the club and things would get resolved in our BEST INTREST! My fiancé and I discussed things and we decided that we did not want to train with anyone except Terell because he pushed us and we just felt comfortable with him. So I contacted Jason who had set us up and informed him that we wanted to cancel our training sessions and would still keep the membership with them. The entire time I was on the phone with Jason all he kept saying was let me see who I can put you with. Umm Hello are you not listening to what I am say. No I do not want anyone else I would like my $360 back because we are not going to spend our money on something we do not want. I just felt like he was not trying to understand where we were coming from and he was just pushing us to switch trainers so that his commission check was not fucked up! After repeating myself and getting a little nasty with Jason, he then proceeded to tell me the reason behind our trainer leaving. I felt it was so unprofessional of him to do so. What happened between our trainer and the organization has nothing to do with me. It seemed like he wanted me to get a bitter taste in my mouth about the trainer and change my mind. Negative did not work, it made me rethink why my fiancé and I even bothered to join this fitness center. Jason stated he would have his manager contact me, that NEVER happened. I only got an email back when I went on the website and gave them feedback and stated we would be canceling our membership as well and all the friends we had referred would be doing the same because of the horrible service we had gotten from the white marsh location. The GM contact me through email and a phone call. She apologized and stated we would be getting a FULL REFUND for the training, gave us 4 guest passes that value up to $100 on our account. I thought the issues had been taken care of, boy was I mistaken! It has been over a week no money has been returned to us, each time I contact the GM she tells me that it is still being worked on. I'm sorry but I have worked in the Banking industry before and it does not take 2 weeks for you to refund me my money, second why am I contacting you all the time. If they run into issues as they say then I need to be updated to that I do not feel like I am getting the run around. These people take your hard earned money with out thinking, but when it is time to give it back, oh you better be patient. I do not feel like the situation was taken care of in the correct manner and the customer service has been awful. My family and friends will not join the club after this and if we could get out of our contract without having to pay an arm and leg we would. The facility itself is beautiful, I love the pool and the classes. The facility itself is fantastic but the quality of service is awful. I would not advice anyone to join at this point! read more

Do you like scratchy towels? Do you like group class schedules that change all the time? Do you like kids running around and playing on equipment and lax rule enforcement? Then this gym is for you! It's not the worst but for $80/month they can do much, much better. If you want to try whatever new fad is around they will have it and send you nonsensical emails about it. Plenty of weights and racks and such, there are like 30 ellipticals but only about 8 stationary bikes. It's relatively small too. No designated space (or mirrors) for body exercises like planks, stretching, etc. Pet peeve and a bit of a rant. The towels . There is one size of towels, mid-sized, which is the wrong size for the two purposes for which towels are used at the gym, showering ( too small so I have to take 2 or 3 irritatingly) and while using the machines, too large so I sweat and have nothing to wipe off myself or the machines. Where did you buy these scratchy, low quality towels? They just feel terrible, all the time. This is not a $10 or $20/month gym this is $80/month and I expect much better. Class schedule? Not consistent. No published schedule, it's online and always changing. The staff is nice and helpful (Eric, John) and the floor is clean, good showers, good locker room, but in comparison to the other Baltimore gym I belonged to that was relatively the same price-wise, it's a distant second. I think the MAC spoiled me with better facilities, better kid management, better rules, a published class schedule. If my office wasn't .5 miles away I would join a different gym. Location, location. The gym is amazing for the most part, a majority of the staff is super down to earth and cool. Equipment is always clean. My complaint comes from the kids though. This is a premium athletic club "they advertise that heavily" and it's flooded out with children. They do an awful job with controlling that. If you want to lay outside by the pool on a Monday afternoon to relax good luck... You'll be searching for a decent seat for awhile and be sprayed by kids. They allow the kids to use everything in the pool area, even the lap lanes. I was also told to watch my mouth for saying "damn" in the locker room by one of the children's staff members. The gym during non peak hours is great for experienced individuals however if you don't know what you are doing, no worker will step up and give advice. Additionally, they have several great front desk staffers whom really make you feel like your not just a member (karen). Daycare decent but they let the big Kids pick on the smaller ones. If I could give them no stars for this review " I would". First I would like to start off by saying I have been a member of this club in the pass. I was invited to a birthday party for a 7 year old child at this location and the staff member by the name of Diane was so rude and unprofessional. They did not want the kids to enjoy the pool and the inside party room after My sister in law had booked her party for both. My sister in law also booked for her party to be extended and was told that she had to get out of the party room because another party was coming in to use it. The lady Diane started to bust all her balloons, throw her stuff In the trash and speaking to her in a very unprofessional tone. I hate to pull the race card but if you are black and live In the White Marsh area Don't get a membership at this club or visit the pool because at the end of the day...... I feel like the only reason why she treated my sister in law and her guest the way she did was because we are black!!!!! Oh and after it was over I request to speak to her and she refused sending the manager Jeff to the desk instead. My review is based on the children's dance classes that the club provides. My daughter has taken dance with Ms. Nina for 3 sessions and it has been great. We are not members of the club, but they allow non-member children to take classes (for a slightly higher fee). Even with a bit of a higher rate, I love the price point for the classes without a long term commitment that some other dance studios require. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is the front desk staff when you come in seem uninformed and confused at times. When I have come to register for classes I have been met with confusion and they sometimes need to get a manager- as if these classes are a really fringe service. Also, when we arrive some staff insist we need to check in, while others say is unnecessary as we are not members and only there to attend the dance class. So there is some confusion and inconsistency. But overall this has been a really good experience. read more

My home club is the Fort Ave. location becauae of its proximity to my job, but the White Marsh location is beautiful! Brand spanking new! I love the cinema room and that everything is not cramped together. read more
