My husband and I were excited to try this spot since it came at the recommendation of Chef Kevin of Callie and Fleurette in SD. We also love supporting small local businesses and after an afternoon at the Zoo Safari Park, why not some killer tacos? When we arrived it was already jumping with seats full and a line out the door. It really seems like a place locals love to come to, which is exciting to see. We had our two kids with us, so a party of 4 is tight especially since the place is very small (but part of its charm). Everything is made in-house, which is always a plus! We sipped on their agua frescas while we waited for our food (luckily a larger table opened up right inside!). We ordered two bean and cheese tacos for the kids. Unfortunately my kids didn't like them because it was just whole black beans and a little sprinkle of cheese in a tortilla. They're used to refried beans and lots of cheese, but that's okay. Personal preference of theirs. For us, we did a few combinations of their mole, cochinita pibil, and steak Jalisco. We really wanted to like them, but they were just okay. We got there right when they opened on Saturday. The cashier was super friendly and talked us through the menu as more people filed in. You pick a meat from their many options then pick between a taco or burrito. $4.50 for a taco and $8 for a burrito. Not a bad deal! The burritos aren't giant but you order 3-4 tacos or 2 burritos and it's solid. The meat is really good and the tortillas are delicious and made in house. They do have vegetarian and vegan options too! The space is pretty small, about 3 tables inside then a couple tables outside (which in the Escondido afternoon is harsh). Starting with the repeats of Steak Colorado & Chipotle Chicken... the chicken was just okay this time. It wasn't creamy or sticking to the chicken like last time. The steak Colorado didn't taste the same at all. My best description is it had a very earthy taste that wasn't there before. This tells me there may be a consistency issue. The 3 new tacos were the chicken mole verde, pork salsa verde & the Rosarito. The 2 verde tacos were good, but the Rosarito on flour ($12) was outstanding!!!! I stopped by on a Friday around 11:30 AM right as they were opening. I was the only one in line at first, but within a few minutes of ordering, a handful of other people came in. The space inside is pretty small, with only a few tables, but there's some outdoor seating if you want a little more room. I ordered the: *Steak Colorado Taco *Steak Jalisco Taco Both were excellent. The flavors really stood out and felt different from your typical taco spot. The meat was cooked well and had a great taste on its own. They offer a couple of sauces to add on top. I went with the orange one, which they said was medium, but it didn't have much heat, which was perfect. It still added a nice flavor though. The food came out in about 10 minutes. It's a casual setup where you pick up your order at the counter and bus your own table. You can pick between a variety of different meats, including steak, chicken, vegetable, etc. You can then decide whether to make it a taco, a burrito, or a quesadilla. I am glad that the algorithm wizards brought this place up on my feed a month ago. I sent it to family and when it was time to find a restaurant, this place popped up. If you're looking for a simple set up with amazing flavors then I present Mesa Agricola. So this place is great to order take out or if you can chance with the limited seating, as they are small. Three small tables inside. They have some outdoor seats and outdoor standing tables. Great for pairs of people who aren't necessarily trying for a full dining experience. It worked well when I went with my family, but I want to make sure you know that before. Also, they close at 6. My family likes to eat earlier then that so it wasn't a problem. Parked behind the building in their off street lot and walked around. When you walk in there they have their menu outlined on little chalk boards to your right. It's simple, tacos or burritos. That said, they were really great at walking new customers their their menu and explaining what goes into it. I ordered four tacos, chorizo, mole turkey, steak Jalisco and barbacoa. I really enjoyed each of the tacos. The flavors were fantastic. They had three kinds of hot sauce out and the sous chef came out and asked if we liked spicy and brought us a behind the counter hotter hot sauce. After we ate we had a good conversation with the sous chef about the restaurant and the menu. Eight of the dishes are staples and the sub out four. Tomorrow they are making a verde mole, which I'll unfortunately miss trying. I will be back here to try more of the menu. This is not a taco shop, even though they sell tacos and burritos. The options are more focused and change based on the chef and sous chef. I've debated writing a review of Mesa Agricola for 3 reasons: 1. The best hidden gem in all of San Diego will be exposed 2. I don't want long lines (even though word has already gotten out) 3. I don't want my favorites to sell out But this place deserves its flowers for the tender, love and care. The freshly made guisado tacos, burritos, drinks and desserts are just mind bending. Know this is not your average carne asada, pollo asado bullshit you can get most places. It's guisado tacos and burritos which means slow cooked, long simmering and bang of flavor. I dream about their tacos bc it brings me so much comfort and joy . When I'm happy, sad or stressed, I want to go to Mesa Agricola. Im working my way through the entire menu and have come almost 3x a week. Here are my absolute favorites: 1. Special Rosarito Taco on flour tortilla is a MUST 1000/100. Cost worth it bc the meat portion is big. Melted Mexican cheese, the harmony of flavors is unlike any other taco I've had in San Diego. 2. Chorizo con nopales is a beautiful mess in the best way possible. 8.5/10 3. Cochinita Pibil 10/10 - i fall in love 4. Steak Colorado 8.3/10 5. Chicken Tinga 8.1/10 - great flavors but the rice surprised me. Will ask for no rice next time. Flavors are verrrry good. 6. Chicken mole in verde 8.2 - eat this before you do pork or steak tacos 7. Chicharron 4/10- dont expect crispy chicharron. It's not crispy. Tasted fine just not as good as the others. 8. Pork in salsa verde- 8.9/10 - i love this dish when I'm looking for more pure pork flavor instead of a mole style sauce. 9. Bean and cheese burrito 10/10 - i looove the dark black beans with the white cheese. It adds the right amount of salt, savory and slight crisp from the edges of the tortilla. 10. Basque cheesecake and Brew Cafe De Olla- MUST GET 10/10. Cafe doesn't need cream. Smooth with the perfect punch of Mexican cinnamon. I've also been to "Guisados" in Los Angeles and this spot is BETTER. Juan, Jose, Megan and the rest of the team: bravo for holding true to an amazing farm to table taco/burrito experience. Food is fantastic! I had two vegan tacos (there were 4 on offer!!!), my favorite was papas à la Mexicana for the salsa. To make it a meal I would recommend 3 or 4 tacos. This place is very small, but I managed to get a table for us squeezed between the window and the long queue that reached to the door. Would go back to try the other two. Super cozy, cute, warm, and authentic taco shop in esco! The staff are very helpful and kind. I liked that you can only get a taco or burrito, but you can choose from the many filling options. However, I think it did taste very clean and healthy. It did not weigh down on me like most greasy tacos I've had. Went here for a quick lunch during the week. It was a bit hard to find, as the sign on the door is not very apparent from the street and there are a lot of different businesses in this little strip. There is a small lot in the back that is shared by the businesses and free to park, or street parking on the side or front of the business. The food was pretty straightforward, the owner was very nice and explained to us about all of the different options and how you could choose a taco or burrito. We went with the taco options and tried a few different ones. They don't really have side items, the rice or beans go inside the taco or burrito. Tacos come on corn tortillas and the burritos come in flour tortillas. The birria taco was pretty good, the meat was just the right consistency and not mushy or fatty. They piled the meat on pretty high. I loved the green shrimp tackle the best, I would order this again. I did not have a strong flavor that was good. The Barbacoa was my least favorite, it had some different spices in it that I just didn't care for inside of a taco. It has chickpeas in it which I do like. I don't know if it's because we came so early in the day, but I do have to mention that the food was lukewarm at best. I am a person that likes my food service very hot so this kind of put me off a little bit. I did mention it to them and they replace one of the tacos. You try to go back at a later time of the day to see if there is a difference in the temperature. They serve the food Chipotle Style, where the meat is Heating in the bins. It's possible they try to keep the fire turned on low so it doesn't dry out, but I do think it might be better if they turned up the fire just a bit. The place is very busy, and there is not much seating, maybe about three small tables inside and a few small tables outside. There is not much Standing Room inside once you order, so I can get a little crowded. The food did taste very fresh, and so did the drinks that they make in house. They have a watermelon one that I liked as it was not too sweet. They also have a pineapple one that's got a little bit of spice to it which I did not try. I really enjoyed their meat and fish offerings, and I'm I am so excited about their vegetarian and vegan dishes as well. The accompanying salsas and sauces hit the mark too. The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. They really took the time with us and explained everything in detail. The watermelon agua frescas and the fermented pineapple drink were so refreshing and flavorful. If you're just looking for standard taqueria fare, this place is not for you. They offer an interesting variety of super-tasty tacos and burritos filled with "guisados", which are slow-cooked dishes featuring meat and/or vegetables in a sauce. The blue corn and flour tortillas are house-made and have great flavor and a fresh texture. There are several guisados on the menu including a few vegetarian versions, plus specials. I tried the Turkey Mole, Chorizo & Nopales, and Steak Ranchera tacos (only served in groups of three for $4.00 each) which were all fantastic! Other luscious looking options were Yellowtail Veracruzano, Shrimp Poblano, Smoked Marlin, Chicarrone Ranchero, Beef Lengua Amarillo, and Short Rib Birria, plus rice and beans. I didn't catch the three veggies options. The burritos are Norteno-style (Northern Mexico), which is a streamlined burrito focused on excellent tortilla quality and just a few simple, flavor-rich fillings. There are a couple of tiny cups of unique salsas available, but they're not really needed. The only thing missing for me was fresh chips and salsa.
