Tried this place for the first time and can honestly say the food was very homey and tasted very good! I had the red chilaquiles with chicken and a pork tamale and they were both in point! The masa is really freshly made and have meat from end to end! The wife had Pozole and a quesabirria and the once again they did not disappoint! This is a discreet location with very good food! We came here based on Yelp reviews, so we walked in optimistic, even though it looked a little questionable at first. We ordered and paid for our food, then went to the restroom to wash our hands. To get there, you have to walk through the kitchen all the way to the back, and that's when everything changed for us. Back there, we saw large bins of food, what looked like beans sitting out, open containers of chips, and food exposed with doors open. It didn't look clean or properly handled at all. The bathroom itself also wasn't in great condition. On top of that, there were shared sauces on the tables in open containers with spoons sitting inside, which didn't feel sanitary. After seeing all of that, when we got our food, we honestly didn't even want to eat it. We ordered birria tacos, carne asada, and carnitas. My husband didn't finish his food, and I didn't let my daughter eat any of it. Unfortunately, after eating there, I ended up getting very sick and was dealing with what felt like food poisoning for about a week, which affected the rest of our trip. The only thing that tasted okay was the lime water. I don't understand how this place has such high ratings. Based on what we saw and experienced, I would not recommend it, and I think it should be looked into for basic health and safety standards. We would not return. read more

Located in Escondido near downtown. I finally got to try it. Get the tamales and the tacos! Can't wait to come back and try everything. I ordered pozole (it's red here), 2 adobada tacos and 2 chicken tamales. The pozole was good, and the portion is for 2 persons. watch out for bones. My only gripe is it comes with radish, limes and shredded cabbage and no onions. The tamales are amazing, super moist but on the small size for $3.50. I will buy tamales again because of the high quality. The tacos can be bought with generic tortilla for $3 or handmade tortilla for $5. It was good, but a lot of carbs. Wait, the adobada is one of the best I have had in San Diego, consistent with other reviews. The chili oil for the pozole was about level 7 spicy and builds. The cashier was very nice and welcoming, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, the food seemed to lack the most important ingredient -- flavor. We also noticed quite a few fleas inside the building, which was very concerning, especially while dining with our 7-month-old baby. The restroom was tucked far off in a corner and there was a strong smell of weed in that area. On top of that, there was no baby changing station available, which made things difficult for families with infants. I was in the area and in the mood for tacos. My typical move is to get on my Yelp app and search for "Mexican" and apply the "$" price category and hit SEARCH. Boom. All the great taco places pop up. I noticed they feature "handcrafted tortillas". That's all I needed to hear. It was about 11:00 on a Friday morning so it wasn't busy. I was greeted by Stephanie, (daughter of the owner) who was very pleasant. I learned you can get a street taco for $3.00 that comes on two small mass produced tortillas or a larger taco on a handmade tortilla for $5.00. That's not a hard decision. I ordered two $5.00 Adobada Tacos with onions and cilantro, one with guacamole salsa and one without. Stephanie brought out two very tasty salsas (one light red and one green) that are chilled and in a plastic squirt bottle. She tells me they are on the mild side and for me to beware of the bowl of hot chili oil that's sitting in the middle of every table. Just put on a drop at a time she tells me because it SO hot....that's cute. All I can say is they tasted fantastic. I literally poured the chili oil over the top and filled in with the other salsas. I really liked the guacamole sauce and will definitely get that on my tacos the next time. The fresh handcrafted tortillas are absolutely delicious and everything was made to order. As I was heading out the door, Stephanie mentioned that they are known for their Birria and to come back and buy that the next time. I asked myself, why not get one now? It's only 11:00! So I ordered one Birria taco for $5.00. Delicious again. This is a great family run spot. Stephanie's mom is the owner. They also sell chips, tortillas, Mulitas ($8.00), Quesadillas ($7.00), Burritos ($12.00) and tamales ($3.50 each or $42.00/dozen). I think this is my new "Go To" spot for quality Mexican food in Escondido And look forward to trying more things. It's an easy 5-Star review for me. read more
