It was a decent size, and the remaining half was still good the following day. The Birria Taco was the best thing we ordered. The Crunchstack was good, but it was lacking the "crunch." They had a variety of hot sauces labeled with the level of spice. My favorite was the hottest one. The people working there were nice. Absolutely DELICIOUS! Found this place on yelp! First time trying Birria tacos and our family didn't know what to expect. We got several Birria taco combos (two tacos plus chips and salsa) and it was so good that I ended up purchasing several more combos in the same setting. The tacos were so flavorful and the accompanying sides (pickled onions, pico de gallo, radish, and red dipping sauce) add the extra oomph. I must say, you need to go on a Tuesday, which coincidentally it was, as they had a special FREE Taco with the combo order. If it weren't for the extra taco, the price wouldn't justify the value as the combos were running at $14.99 which would've been almost $7.50 per taco if it weren't for Free Taco Tuesday. I last visited this spot when it was Tofu House. Now I was here for my old team's monthly lunch. Nice of them to still invite the retired guy. I ordered 2 birria tacos. Tortillas were crispy and on the dry side. Birrea was tender and full of flavor. The staff here seemed to be not as friendly or welcoming almost like they were forced to be there and take your order. The food however same quality as you expect. I've heard about Mike Tacos over the years and never had a chance to try it. Boy, am I lucky that they opened one in the neighborhood. I ordered the red quesadilla and it's amazing!! Such a great addition to the area. One of the biggest perks is that they're open late, and there's plenty of parking, which makes it an easy stop any time of day. I've driven past this restaurant several times, and their bright red decor really caught my eye. I also noticed that it's always crowded. I decided to finally check it out on a Taco Tuesday. I ordered the Mike's Meal online, and it contains 2 birria tacos and cheese. It also has chips and a container of consome. I love how when they package it in the box, they separate the cilantro, onions, limes, radishes, and pickled onions from the tacos, so that they don't get soggy. Also, it allows for you to control the amount of each topping that goes onto your tacos. The birria tacos with the consome were delicious, and lived up to the hype for me. A perk of ordering on Tuesdays is that you get an extra taco when you order Mike's Meal. A con of ordering online is that the wait time can be pretty inaccurate. Mike's Red Tacos! I was very excited to see what the hype was all about. I knew lines would be long for Taco Tuesday so I ordered online at 6:30 pm. The online system estimated my order would be ready in 15 minutes which seemed aggressive. I arrived at 7:10 pm and despite presenting my online order confirmation was confused that I was told the order did not appear in the system at all. I was asked to come back and check in later. I finally got my tacos at 7:30 pm. It would be great if the online system could be improved to more accurately reflect wait times. The tacos were quite good and I can understand the hype! I ordered Mike's meal which is a Taco Tuesday deal that comes with 3 Birria tacos (usually you get 2). The meat was juicy the consume was delicious and I appreciated the onions and cilantro. Wow! Pretty darn good! Love the consume! We used to go to Tofu House (previous restaurant at this location) all the time so coming here was a little bit hard at first. BUT leaving yesterday I was very impressed. I really like the vibe, the outside patio area is beautiful and prettied-up really well. The tables were fun (decorated with Mike's bold logo) and the chairs were really comfortable to sit at. The main area in front of the order counter is roomy and inviting and you're greeted and acknowledged. The menu is clear, bright and easy to read as well. My husband and I ordered the Mike's Meal, which is the two Birria tacos, chips and consume. First of all hats off to Mike who opened this unique type of restaurant which, as far as I know, Mira Mesa has not yet been blessed with. Until now Haha. I've recently found a new love of quesa birria tacos with their wonderful broth to dip them in. My first try was up in Vista at a tiny little place. I remember feeling cravings for more even before I got up from the table! Here, Mike's tacos were delish, being crunchy and then chewy with the cheese plus dipping them in the consume elevates every flavor. The meat is so tender and rich and putting just onions and cilantro with it is all you need. Although I did try a few of the salsas that weren't too hot and they were amazing as well. OK, my only critique and personal opinion (emphasis on personal) to elevate the tacos even more: crisp up the shells with cheese on the outside and a little less in the taco itself. As I'm saying this, I'm thinking maybe you DO have it on the menu or can ask for it that way, I'm not sure. (If I missed it, I'll update my review.) We were debating this place or another place, but my husband ended up picking this place. For being after 11pm there was a lot of people dining in. They have a salsa station with several different salsas and I actually liked every single one of them. I didn't get to try the hottest one because I like to enjoy my food, not burn my mouth haha. If you're craving birria, this is the spot, easily the best birria I've had in San Diego. The meat is tender, moist, and full of flavor, and the consomé is just as rich and flavorful. Im not sure what all this hype is about? Ive had the other location and always thought it was so-so and this is the same. The parking lot is spacious and they have a soda machine so you can get your own drinks. They also have a sauce station. The place is fairly clean and it wasnt too busy when i went. However, for only 2 people ahead of me, it took soooooo long for my food. Mike's red tacos is so overpriced and then they charge for everything. Cheese, consome, and almost 7$ for ONE birria taco. Its better to get their "deal" that comes with TWO tacos and consome for 15$. And even THAT is NOT worth. I guess if people want to pay these prices for food then dont complain about inflation. Ive had soooooooooooo much better elsewhere. If you get a single taco, the consome doesn't come with it. Its 2.50$ extra. My problem with this taco is that it had cheese BUT not ENOUGH and the shell is hard and tasted stale. However, the consome was delicious. I think the birria ramen may taste fabulous! Although, the ramen is almost 17$ thats a pretty disgusting price. If i didn't have better birria tacos that came with oozing cheese at no additional cost this past week, id be more lenient, but this place is a pass for me unless i wanted churros. The strawberry churros were awesome! Its sooooo good and their whipped cream was also fluffy and yummy. The nachos came with house seasoned tortilla chips, Mike's beef birria, a South West style queso, a dallop of guacamole, a drizzle of sour cream, chopped onions and cilantro, and refried beans. My excitement was premature when I tried to order and didn't see anything but beef as the main protein on their menu. I asked the front person why there was no chicken. She just told me that they specialize in birria and beef is the main ingredient. This is very disappointing since the real traditional birria is usually goat or lamb, NOT beef. Since they have gone non-traditional with beef, why not with chicken too? They are cutting off a large segment of customers who couldn't eat beef due to allergies, gout, or who just want a lighter/healthier alternative. But there is plenty of parking on the side street and it's not a far walk. The staff is amazing!!! Several of the employees stopped at our table to see how we were doing. I have never had a Birria taco before so I don't have anything to compare it to, other than to say it was delicious and absolutely packed full of flavor. I thought with the red color it would be spicy, and that is not the case. We almost got everything on the menu just to try and everything was fantastic. The menu is simple but has variety. I've been so excited waiting for this Mike's Red Tacos to open up and it's finally here. This one is located on Mira Mesa Blvd, where Tofu House used to be. The parking can get a little crowded but there is a lot of street parking available. I came on a Sunday evening and the line was out the door. There are kiosks but I don't think they're up and running just yet so it took a little while to get an order in. Once we ordered it took less than 20 minutes to get our food and the servers were all very apologetic about the wait and really nice. I ordered a loaded fries and breakfast burrito to share with my husband. The fries were delicious and crispy with a lot of the flavorful birria loaded on top. We added some salsa from their salsa bar for a little extra kick and flavor. I really enjoyed the chunky salsa which was acidic but fresh with a little spice. The breakfast burrito came with eggs, hash browns and birria. I wish the hash browns were a little crunchier but the birria was obviously delicious and the eggs added a good heartiness. It came with tangy pickled onions on the side that I wish I could've gotten more of. I love the food at the other Mike's so I knew I would like it here too but this location also had some nice features that made me like this one a bit more: there is a good amount of seating, both indoor and outdoor, including booths, tables, and barstools along on walls. I also like that they have kiosk to order that will hopefully be in use soon. And I was very happy to see a hand wash station apart from the restrooms because sometimes the birria is so juicy I just need to wash my hands. Sooo excited they opened a location in Mira Mesa!! They just opened and honestly so impressed at how quick their service was considering there was a line all day. We came on a Sunday at 12:30 for lunch and waited about 15 mins to order, then another 15-20 for our food. Ordered the red quesadilla and that paired with the consume to dip is sooo good. Food quality here is the same as the other locations as well. Can't really go wrong with the Birria tacos, the quesadillas and of course the crunch wrap which is amazing but huge.
