The uttapam, a pancake with onion and herbs, was my favorite dish - absolutely delicious. The lamb was really well cooked and not too heavy on the spices. The bite of my wife's burger was excellent: juicy, flavorful, and really great bread. The fries with the burger were a little too heavily seasoned for me, but someone who really loves Indian spices might not feel the same way. Drinks were excellent. Finally got to try this place and it did not disappoint! Visiting from Gainesville, I was nervous that this may not be a great atmosphere for a toddler but everyone was so nice and welcoming, and I was relieved to see there were high chairs and other little ones enjoying their meals. We sat on the patio, which was lovely, and our server was friendly and attentive. I was pleasantly surprised that they asked up front about any allergies and were so gracious in accommodating. The food was delicious, from the marinated cucumbers we got as an appetizer to the chicken curry and paneer curry we selected as our entrees. The salmon, fries, wings, pav bhaji ( potato, pea, tomato, buttery pav), watermelon salad, and shrimp and grits. The watermelon salad was a delightful seasonal surprise! We couldn't get enough! The pav Bhaji was so unique and delicious. Buttery bread filled with potatoes, peas, and tomatoes. The wings were amazing, such great unique flavor and crunch! Everyone loved the salmon it was not my favorite but I would recommend it if you like salmon. The star was the shrimp and grits. It's made with Basmati grits and they were so creamy. Our favorites were by far the naanchos and the salmon mole but all of the things we get were amazing. So good and so everything else. It was a MARVELOUS experience to taste something new and that was the food of Chef Saji, Southern Indian, and Kerala. **The Vibe** From the outside, it is a non-descript house looking building that was easy to miss and we drove by while looking for the restaurant. Once on the inside, I noticed the music, host & servers wearing all black, and I felt a low-key, easy-going, chill, vibe that permeating. **The Service** David served us. He was well-informed, generous with recommendations & suggestions, and set the expectations high for the food (and his service). He checked in after each course to ensure that we were pleased (and to sanity check that he was right). Most importantly, David had really good energy. We could tell that he loved what he does and he loves the food at Mesa which makes Mesa so much more than the food. "Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name and their always glad you came." **The Food** We started with the sweet potato samosas. They look like crab ragoon but are sweet potato stuffed and fried in coconut oil. It was very light and tasty. For me, the cranberry chutney was the star of the appetizer. David noted that his favorite dish is the Salmon Molee and it was fantastic. I never had a Salmon curry dish in my lifetime. The dish was as delicious and exquisite as it is unique. The Molee is highly related, well known, and recommended for a reason.The yellow curry w vegetables over the salmon and rice was incredible. David recommended or touted everything we are, so you can add the prefix "David recommended..." to everything that follows. His next favorite dish was the Mesa Chicken Curry with rice. If you know, you know. If you don't, go and order. The Chef's favorite dish is the KFC sandwich (Kerala Fried Chicken). We ordered one of those also. The fry was a good portion, crisp & crunchy, and well-seasoned accompanied by fries. It was good but the Molee and the Curry were so much better. I almost forgot about what I heard to be paratha (flatbread) but is actually malabar parotta (a layered, flaky, textured, light, and tasty bread) and yet another new Indian dish that we have never had. **The Drinks** Scarlet Sangria and Mango Lassi. The Lassi was good as was the Sangria. **The Dessert** Was the only "it's ok" part of the meal (for me). The Chef asked and I noted that I needed more banana in the banana bread and more banana in the ice cream for it to be "good" for my taste. And more fat/butter because it leaned towards drier and crumblier than how I like it. **The Chef/Owner** Saji George is a treasure. We must protect her at all cost. Please read her story because once you meet her, she is unforgettable. She stopped by our table twice. The first time she talked about Southern Indian cuisine, preparing "lighter" Indian food, and cooking with coconut oil. The second time around she stayed for a while asked us about our food. Check out this modern South Indian restaurant on Hershel street! As a South Indian, I was thrilled to try Mesa's food! The tellicherry lemon-pepper flavor of the wings was so unique and flavorful. The Pav Bhaji was also very delicious, with the buttery pav complementing the potato filling nicely. For my main entree, I got their Kerala-style chicken curry and it was outstanding. The coconut milk added a richness to the dish. I opted for medium heat, but next time I'll definitely go for Indian heat. Eclectic and fun, Mesa is a new take on Indian cuisine. Styling itself as a unique, upscale take, they have a nice selection of different styles and dishes. We got the puri, chicken wings, and lamb chops. The puri was an interesting texture, my husband liked it but I wasn't a fan of the crème fraise in the middle. The chicken wings were incredibly crispy and meaty, the sauce was a little overwhelming. I'd have asked for it on the side. The lamb chops were so well seasoned and perfectly cooked at medium rare, the arugula helping cut through the fat. The dish was perfect and our absolute favorite part of the meal. Our server was super sweet and friendly, and tried his best to help us manage the elements. I had the lamb chops and the meat quality was up there. very juicy and have a good crispy Skin, wasn't overly seasoned, but definitely had flavor honestly, the most surprising thing on the plate that I really enjoyed was the arugula salad. It had feta cheese, and some sort of seeds. I truly enjoy whatever dressing they put on top of that was 10 out of 10 the gunpowder potatoes were just OK. I would prefer them to be crispy, but still decent. The cilantro sauce was very unnecessary didn't really make any portion of the meal better. the mango lassi was so delicious. I had that first, natural mango flavor loved it, and the crème brûlée was definitely delicious and the dessert was large enough to share. The service was so nice majority of the employees I talked to have been working there for years. They seem to really enjoy working there and they all gave suggestions and spoke really highly of the owners and the overall ambience 10/10. My two experiences here have been beyond fabulous. I love the spin on south Indian cuisine here. This restored home turned into a restaurant is such an inviting theme. You feel warm and welcome as soon as you walk in. The service on both occasions - WOW; amazing. I actually happened to get the same server both times I visited out of luck. She was so patient and kind knowing it was our first time at the restaurant so of course we had questions, and wanted to know what items were some of her favorites as well. She gave great feedback and even let us know when the menu was changing based on upcoming seasons. I loved that. That's actually the reason for the second visit. I wanted to try some of the fall appetizers and drinks. I know many have tried Mesa and rave about it, but part of me still feels like this restaurant is slept on and more need to experience Mesa. I'm very excited to bring friends and family here. I love spending quality time off with my favorites catching up over delicious food and drinks at niche gems such as this. I definitely think it's a love language of mine I'm happy to share. My entree pictures, as well as dessert, and most apps are from Mesa's summer menu, and they are now on their fall menu. From what I remember being told while there on my first visit - it seems like most entrees remain the same each season, maybe one or two small things are tweaked, and it's the apps, desserts, drinks that change with the coming and going of seasons. Honestly it's all good - summer or fall, it doesn't matter when you visit because the entire menu is good. I still Love Jax Spice for North Indian food, but Mesa is a much closer option location wise for me and the South Indian blend here is extremely unique and light. It's almost like Indian food mixed with a little bit of Florida - you have fresh seafood, light and flavorful apps, drinks, etc. If you are sensitive to spice, don't let that keep you from visiting. Nothing I ordered was overbearing and you can always tell your server how spicy or not spicy you would like your food as a precaution. I personally like spice so our meal was perfect for us, but we requested the entrees to include some heat. Get the wing appetizer, and the carrot flatbread. Wings were crispy with some mild to medium heat , and the carrot flatbread is a mix of ricotta cheese, lemon, and hot honey - I could easily eat two of those for myself. The fresh fish and rice entree I had was a huge portion. I had enough to take home and eat the next day, and my dessert was not overly sweet - a nice subtle finish to an amazing meal. Had dinner here on a Tuesday night. Walking in, the hostess greeted me and walked me to the dining area. The decor was very pretty and the mural was beautiful. Paired very well with the curry. We asked the curry to be "Indian spicy (spiciest level)" but it really didn't end up being that spicy so they brought out the "spice bomb" paste that took it up a level or two.
