Was referred by JAPAN ENGINES, where I purchased a used tranny and had METRO install it. Went like clockwork with no surprises. Dealt with and will only deal with "HUNG". He's the "mgr." and usually answers the phone. After 3 months I was experiencing some hesitation in acceleration and Hung said to bring it in and they'd put the diagnostic "code" reader on it to see if it was the tranny they installed. Turned out it only needed an oil-change and NOT the oil-sensors or tranny that I was afraid of. $65.00 for the diagnostic and oil-change and I'm sleeping like a baby again! Deal with Hung and he will tell you straight-up where you stand. Why believe me and travel to this "rough" side of town? Been in the auto biz for 19 years (sales) and know a BS artist from 20 paces! In 2010, I blew my engine on my 2006 Scion Tc and was looking for an honest mechanic, which I knew would be hard to find unless I knew someone, who knows someone that owns a reputable shop. After being hookwinked (deceived) by Concord Toyota, my coworker told me about Metro Auto Repair's responsible prices and quality service that she's been receiving for years. She said "Talk to Ming" (owner) and I did right away. Long story short: I gave my new engine to Metro and they installed it within four days for less than one thousand dollars. Any parts they remove from my vehicle they'll give them to me, and show me the new replacement parts. To this day I still go to Metro, even when I was living in Brentwood. read more

I've always had the good fortune to have been able to take my cars to some really good and honest mechanics. The staff at Metro Auto are just the opposite. They are very negligent and incompetent and I will explain how. I've had nothing but a bad time with them and, after following up with the Better Business Bureau, it's easy to see why. They've had their business license revoked and have changed business names a few times, probably to get their license back. Look it up and see for yourself. How it started: The engine on my car basically died, and I ended up buying a used engine from a company that referred me to them. I hadn't found any negative information about that shop on the 'net at the time, so I went for it. These guys are SORRY. They did a poor job of working on my car because they left MANY issues unaddressed and the issues they did address were basically hack-jobs and jury-rigs. The car was seriously neglected by its previous owner and needed a lot of work just to function correctly. They had the opportunity to contact me and point out MANY things that were wrong, such as the old and brittle upper and lower radiator hoses, worn serpentine belts, leaky valve cover, faulty idle speed controller, and some others. Instead, they opted to just do enough work on the car just to get it barely up and running. Granted, they were originally hired to install a used engine and replace a worn clutch, but a competent mechanic would've expressed some concern at least, about those other issues. They didn't bother. I instructed them to re-use parts from the old engine onto the new engine. They did not do this correctly. The old engine had 4 NGK spark plugs (4 cylinder) They used 3 of the NGK plugs and replaced one with a Champion sparkplug. Why? They never said so. The gap on the Champion plug could've been different for all I knew and the engine could've been mis-firing. They told me they used a new timing belt on the new engine because the old one was worn. I recently had the car inspected by another mechanic and he found that the timing belt was just about ready to snap. Thanks for nothing, Metro Auto. That alone could've ruined the engine had it failed. In closing, I strongly urge the reader to avoid patronizing this so-called business. They never showed me the old engine, they never showed me the old parts. They don't seem to know what they're doing. Stay away. Thanks for reading. read more

I was referred to Metro from JapanEngines, a company that sells used engines and transmissions previously used in Japan. I had Metro install a transmission in my 1990 Honda CRX (automatic). The installer called me to let me know that the transmission I had brought in didn't work. Most installers would have said, "Your problem" but Metro took out the bad one and then installed a second one at no additional charge! What more can I say but "Exceptional!" After 250 miles of use, it is working great. read more

I won't use a company that leaves a dog tethered outside exposed to the elements for hours on end. Their "guard dog" has oil in its fur, isn't taken inside when it rains, and has to hang out all day next to his own feces. Not the type of people I want to support with my money. What a Great Place! Honest auto repair facilities have always been hard to find, but this place sets the standard not only for honesty, but for going "above and beyond" in trying to help the customer. I too was referred by Japan Engines (like Jason S.) and got a used engine. Running on 3 cylinders I barely made it into Metro with the old engine, but Minh, the manager, drove me to Japan Engines to get the replacement engine, & took care of all the details of obtaining periferal parts (water pump, clutch) that were necessary to make the new engine run well. The prices, both from Metro Auto Repair & Japan Engine were very fair; Metro's prices were definitely lower than other places I compared with. The new engine ran very well, but after a week I noticed that it was dripping a little oil. No problem: Minh said that it was actually a defective seal in the engine, and should have been Japan Engines' responsibility. But he took responsibility for it, & took the engine apart (a substantial job) to replace the seal at **No Charge** to me (and it stopped the oil drip). A few weeks later, when the 30-day labor warranty should by rights have been expired, he again did some follow-up work on it at no charge to me. The location just a block from the Fruitvale BART station makes it easy to get to this place, from SF & elsewhere in the Bay Area; if you have to have major work done on your car it's definitely worth the trip. BTW, after looking at Mike F's Yelp review, I checked with the Better Business Bureau. Their page on Metro, at: http://www.bbb.org/greater-san-francisco/business-reviews/truck-repair-and-service/metro-auto-repair-in-oakland-ca-30072 says: "This business has no rating at this time" and lists zero complaints. The State's page with Bureau of Automotive Repair lists a valid license with no disciplinary actions. Six months later my engine is still running great! For vehicle repair needs, you can't make a better decision than to deal with Minh at Metro Auto Repair. read more

I had token a car couple years ago just to get clutch fixed ,I dropped it off ,,5 min later mechanic calls me ,saying come back we have to show u something,,I go back and dey show my water leaking from radiator,from the top ,,,the mechanic purposely hit it with something to crack it,,cuss I swear I was always watching the engine and before I got there I looked at everything, and there was no leaks at all...2 other Asian mechanics were looking at the mechanic that broke my radiator kinda like smiling before I they showed me the leak....he tot he was going to full me like he probably been doing to all there customers..I made him change it for free, I was so pissed...wish someone do something to close there shop down!!,, after that incident I realized why another car I had tooken der years before was always having issues,,they were messing with that car so I can keep taking it there to RIP me off read more

METRO AUTO REPAIR WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT (the picture in the photo show the nasty guy wearing a blue/teal jacket under the uniform) On november 1st I spoke to Minh the owner of the place(according to him) to get my toyota prius 07 car engine replace we agreed and he said it will take 3 days but still took 7days and I was fine with it but when I called to check on the status another guy told me the owner is gone for 2 weeks oversea and I MUST BUY engine oil, transmission oil and filter if I need my car fixed I replied no I should not buy anything because that is included in the change of engine cost beside why would you change an engine without adding cost of oil change if it is necessary? he just mumble (that's when I started losing confidence)but at this point I cant retreat so I went and bought everything he asked for. Fast forward following Monday I called again and he said oooh your car is ready come get it(he was supposed to call me to pick it up but he didn't) When I showed up I asked him if everything was okay and everything is put into place he said yes with an ANGRY voice and then I asked him for a receipt and he showed which seem to me a blank piece with total price on it. then I asked him how about warranty he said NO NO NO this no warranty only the engine seller will give you warranty THEN I protested only after he wrote on the receipt 90 days warranty. After I left the shop I went to my mechanic(he doesn't change engine btw) to say hello he asked right of way is the A/C working I tried and said yes he said okay good park and I will check the car for you if everything is correct/sealed, as soon as he looked into the hood he notice the big hose wasn't tight at all and he told if had driven home for only 30 minute the engine would have overheat and blow on me so I called the shop where i fixed the car he denied stating that I don't know what I am talking about until when I told him I am at a mechanic shop right now and he is showing it to me as we are talking then he decided to come take a look. He showed up 45 minutes later with MY LEFT OVER coolant I bought from the Toyota dealer for $79 and fixed the loose hose and refill the coolant as he was leaving I asked if i could get that coolant just in case he said yes its yours (why you kept it then?) afterward I stayed to chat with my mechanic and when I was ready to leave it was getting hot so I put the a/c on and it wasn't working anymore but my mechanic told me to drive around maybe it will take a while so I did just that but today November 14 I went back to the shop and explained about the a/c he first denied that has nothing to do with changing the engine and then I protested and he said oh oh you need to go a/c station you out of freon I told him he let it out so he need to fix it after me educating him on his job he said okay that I should come next week because he cant operate the freon machine(why was he sending me somewhere if he has one?) I said I cant drive a car with this weather without a/c he replied i'm not the boss and its not his problem. I told him if I should refill somewhere and he will refund me and he said no way. So I left my car there blocking his garage door telling him he will fix it or he can't close the shop. Not sure what they will do to it but I am ready to sue them. I looked the company online and found out these guys are crooked and counterfeiters, please read the reviews yourself I only wished I looked at it before I went there. I will do everything possible to revoke their license , this is not fair taking advantage of citizens like me who pays their taxes, and not to mentioned he told me if I paid the repair cost in cash he will give me $50 discount (he is trying to sneak without paying the taxes) So I said no I will use my credit card. read more

Had been going here for years, minh the owner allowed someone who he claimed to trust manage the shop. That guy was a snake! I later found out when my engine died, that they had not done the tune up's or transmission service i had paid them to do. when i went to get my money back the owner acknowledged that he new the employee had been doing shady business because he had already had three complaints. Minh tried to get out of giving me my money back, eventually agreed. he wrote me a check, which when i went to cash turned out to be NO GOOD, When i went back to the shop to get cash, he gave me a fake 1 hundred dollar bill among my refund. THOSE are the reasons i am choosing to write, when ming new he was wrong he didn't do what he should have as a business owner to make things right, instead he chose to act like a criminal himself.
