I arrived at 5:02pm to find the gate closed and the staff at the gate turned me away. Her response was to come back the next day at 8am (when I'm working). I under stand operation hours, however the rigidity displayed by the staff was unhelpful given the small size of the load I was trying to deposit (a single couch). I'm sure there were still other customers inside at the time. The hours of operation are ridiculous as well. It is a disservice to customers for the waste station to have traditional banker's hours and not have alternate hours available during the week. These hours conflict with the availability of most working customers.

I ordered 4 yards of bark and 4 yards of soil and expected there to be a delivery charge, however…read morethey delivered both at the same time and charged me $110 for each product. Although they gave me a discount of $30 dollars. the total delivery was $190. I was not told how much the delivery would cost when I placed the order. If I had been I would not have accepted. When I called to complain they said "This is the way we've always done it". No apology. There are plenty of places in town that have great products. I will never go back to McFarlane's.

Recycling Adventure:…read more I recently had to clean out my garage and a couple of rooms inside our house in order to prepare to host some visitors from overseas for a couple of weeks this summer. I'd accumulated 20-years of junk! It looked like a job for Extreme Make Over - Home Edition, but without the army of contractors or Sears and Ty Pennington to help. It almost looked like an episode of Oprah about folks who hoard everything! I had all the usual junk that would typically be recyclable curbside, but I had both too much of it for a single curbside load, as well as plenty of 'stuff' that wasn't on the curbside list of recyclables (like block Styrofoam packaging, etc). Of course, some of the stuff I wanted to jettison was perfectly reusable and I didn't want it to simply get tossed (working, but old computer and home electronics stuff, etc). And while some of the stuff qualified as Salvation Army and Goodwill candidates, some didn't. I discovered Portland's Metro Recycling Web-Site and Hot-line and they supplied me with a list of local resources for all the various types of junk that I wanted to recycle, including the block Styrofoam packing material. Portland has great curbside recycling, but where do those items go? If you bring your non-ferrous (not iron or steel) metals to Calbag, you will have a pretty good idea of where they go, because they are pros. What's a pro? Well they are conversant in classifying metal waste into categories like Barley, Cocoa and Dream, all specific grades of copper for recycling: http://www.isri.org/CMDownload.aspx?ContentKey=41c2f107-0576-4a61-a0aa-078cab920e84&ContentItemKey=c15fde3c-074c-4ad4-a717-1b1b0b19ccae. Then they trade those on the world market. I usually just drop copper house wiring off for free, but they also buy metals, and will be sure it gets recycled. Same would be the case for aluminum, like storm windows without the glass. Keep in mind this is an industrial facility, be safe and respect the workers. Industrial buyer of non-iron/steel metals for recycling in Portland's industrial area that will get it to where it needs to be reused.

what a lovely group of people on a much needed, noble mission to make our world a better place…read more i stumbled upon james recycling depot on happenstance. like many of my neighbors and friends of the planet, my family and i have taken many steps to cut down on the waste we generate. and while we've strived to cut down on as much plastic as possible, plastic is so gnarly and ubiquitous that we inevitably have had a stash of styrofoam (ugh!) and some #2 small plastic vitamin bottles. enter the wonderful humans at James recycling depot! this weekend, i decided its time to finally tackle the pile and find a place to responsibly (as much as we can) give a second life, hopefully. james, 27 years old and on the autism spectrum is like me and you: we both have a deep passion for the environment and nerding out about recycling. at 17, james decided to collect plastic recycling from neighbors that wouldn't be accepted in commingled city recycling. fast forward to even talking with a local industrial plastic recycling company who made an exception to no household recycling after hearing about james and his story, the depot was born! in addition to styrofoam, james recycling depot takes hard plastics like clamshells, or even bread clips to lids, straws, contact lens blister packs and more! the key though is that items that are taken in our curbside are *not* accepted like cardboard or plastic film is not accepted (film is recycle+ or at drop offs at stores etc!) hours are on some weekdays, with a pop up event on a Saturday about once a month per what i gather. the website is definitely the place to know where to find the next collection event! there is a small cost to recycle some items like styrofoam (reasonable honestly: $10/45 gal bag) and plastics (a small box of supplement bottles ran us $1). card is accepted. i absolutely love that james provides employment and enrichment opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum is so inspiring. also, i appreciate that you can reach out if reducing fees are an economic hardship. james recycling depot is a non-profit and donations are accepted. thank you, james and team! you all are incredible people.

The service is excellent and a good value. The volunteers are friendly and well organized with zones for different types of plastic. And the business was started by a person on the Autism Spectrum. As a parent of an adult child with autism, I know the struggles faced with employment and independent living. It warms my heart seeing James following his passion while doing good for the community and the environment. I used to have Ridwell collect recyclables at my home, but I didn't generate enough material to make regular collection worthwhile. James Recycling makes it easier for me to store items and drop them off when I'm doing another errand. I recently dropped off a mountain of Styrofoam (filled my trunk and back seat). They quickly got me checked out for about $12, despite it being busy with multiple customers waiting. Nobody waited very long. It was faster than checking out at the grocery store.
