I do not wish to compose a negative review about this small business. However, the unprofessional & unkind treatment I received necessitates that I do. Metro Cleaners just lost a potential loyal, congenial customer. Earlier, I called a few times to inquire about a service. My phone connection was poor initially so we couldn't hear one another. Finally, I was able to speak with her. My polite "Good morning, I'm Celeste. How are you?" was met with "Uh OK. What do you want?" I remained polite asking about dry cleaning service for a 2-piece suit. She stated the price is determined when it is seen. That's understandable. I'll accept that policy given the good quality results claimed from other reviews. After my "Oh okay" the call was abruptly ended. I was going to inquire about the price range and time of completion. I called back a few mins later to retry - still cordial. Again, I was met with rudeness. Her words "I am busy with a customer" "... I told you the price depends ... if you don't like the price" were inconsiderate. Customers that call via phone are customers too. If busy, simply ask them to hold. The unprofessionalism and disrespect is a NO for me. I wanted to love this business based off previous positive reviews. Plus, it's less than 10 min. from my home. How disappointing. read more

This is a quaint drycleaning store a stone's throw away from Stanton Park on The Hill. The owners are very friendly and their service is efficient and their prices are not over the top. Personally, I love it because it is an Organic Drycleaning (which means no use of perc in their cleaning process) and I take the loveliest walk through the Historic Capitol Hill District to get there. read more

I didn't have any problems with laundering my shirts here ($1.85/shirt) but I found the service quite abrasive. It was as if you were intruding upon her personal space and she wanted nothing to do with you. I handed her a credit card and she told me "but it's only $3.92" with an attitude of disbelief. Most places at least post a disclaimer about minimum credit card charges. When I asked for a receipt, she wouldn't give me one and told me to look for my original claim ticket. I'm giving Metro Cleaners the benefit of the doubt that it's NOT the worst dry cleaner in town. Nonetheless, it definitely ranks as one of the worst cleaners I've ever visited. The most recent review of this business is from 2010, so I might as well shed some light on its recent changes. The biggest complaints about this place have been that they don't offer receipts and they are unfriendly. As a 2014 customer, I can say that they do neither of these things now. Receipts are offered without question and the owners have been very polite. I noticed that when they iron dress shirts, they ignore pleats on the sleeve, which made it look wrinkly. This was an unprofessional mistake, but the owner was very receptive to my critique and promised better service next time. All in all, I believe that this business has acknowledged the negative reviews online and have made positive changes. I have been coming here for years and it's always been very convenient (best parking situation of any cleaners on the Hill / Swamp), but over the last 7 days everything has changed. Every time I drive by there someone is now parked for hours in the spot out front which is supposed to be for 30 minute parking ONLY! Who would be so rude as to park so flagrantly in a clearly marked 30 minute spot? Needless to say I've been unable to drop off my dry cleaning this week and am wearing rumpled shirts to work! Brought clothes in to get tailored/dry cleaned. Returned a week later to pick up clothes. Everything was there except for a pair of suit pants. For several weeks after, she would not return our pants to us, insisting that we had a pair of pants that belonged to another customer. Called my cell phone 5+ times a day, and even came to our house unannounced demanding that we return pants that we never had. Do not use this dry cleaner. Find another one that is less expensive and more customer-service oriented. To the customer missing a pair of pants: We do not have your pants. I am assuming that the owner will not reimburse you for the missing pants because she insists that another customer has them. This is not the case. I do hope your pants turn up. read more

We've just endured our last poor experience at Metro Cleaners. We will never go back there again. Just to give you a picture of the past year: 1) They will not give you receipts... seriously???! Isn't that sort of basic? 2) Repairs: I took in a cotton dress with a small rip on the seam and asked them to repair it. I have never seen such poor sewing work. There were threads hanging from the seam, wrinkes in the stitching... I could have done THAT myself. 3) I picked up a small load of just a few dress shirts. The total cost was about $8. The owner refused to let me use a credit card, even though they do not have a credit card minimum posted ANYWHERE in the store (which she confirmed), but she wanted me to walk several blocks to an ATM despite the fact that I had to get to work, etc. And she wasn't even nice about it!! 4) When we picked up a load, my fiance received a shirt that did not belong to him, and was missing one of his shirts. Admittedly, it took a couple of months, but when he brought the shirt back and asked that he be compensated for the lost shirt ($20-$30 would have sufficed), they argued with him to no end, at one point trying to convince him that this extra small shirt DID in fact belong to him. They didn't listen, they didn't empathize... they DID cut off their nose to spite their face. This was the stated last straw. 5) They are NEVER nice!! I always feel like it's putting them out to give them business. I really can't think of one redeeming quality, except for the fact that they are conveniently located near our house. Try the place across the park, Capitol City Cleaners. We brought our stuff there after this last experience with Metro and they were incredibly nice with reasonable prices. These people are horrible. I started going to this dry cleaner because they claimed to be open at 7 AM. I went twice and neither time were they there until about 7:15 AM. Today, I went a third time and they were not open again. This time I waited in the rain while these people never showed up. I am done with this dry cleaner and not returning. The two people who run this are abrasive. Finally, they are in violation of their Mastercard agreement by having a sign posted that requires a $10 minimum on purchase. read more

I just created a Yelp account so I could register my opinion of Metro Cleaners. My experience with Metro Cleaners is simply the worst customer service and lowest work quality experience I have had in Washington. I should've known things were going to be bad when I walked in and was greeted by the staff with gruffness. The woman who assisted me at the counter literally said fewer than ten words during our entire exchange. The hem had fallen out of a pair of suit pants, and I had seen that Metro Cleaners had same-day hemming service. She said she'd have it finished by the end of the day. When I returned at the end of the day, the pants were indeed hemmed. I paid my $6.50 then went on my merry way. A few days later, I looked down at my pant leg and realized that, instead of "hiding" the hem like the other leg of my pants (the hem was not visible on the outside of the pant leg), the tailor had instead sewn right through the outside of the pants, and the thread was plainly visible every inch or so. It was terribly shoddy work, and I'm going to have to get it fixed. You get what you pay for, I suppose My girlfriend's experience was even worse. She took a number of garments in for cleaning and tailoring before I realized they did shoddy work on my pants. They refused to give her an estimate on the cost, and she just got the bill: $180, including $65 for some simple alterations on a jacket, and $35 for cleaning a small purse. We had used this dry cleaner for nearly three years for convenience since they are right around the corner from our house. A recent experience, however, was at best unprofessional and at worst outright thievery and will have us trekking elsewhere for our dry cleaning. After a cleaning, one of my wife's favorite blouses was torn badly (and it was in pristine shape when it was dropped off). We realize that happens from time to time but what followed was shocking. My wife never received an apology from the owners and it became a ridiculous negotiation to get a $30 discount off the cleaning charge for the other items (the woman owner had the gall to attempt to haggle down the discount amount). But that is the least of it - then it just got surreal. When my wife asked for the blouse back, they refused. I came over to the store since I was wondering what was taking so long and witnessed the episode that followed. They adamantly refused to return my wife's blouse claiming the $30 discount on the cleaning covered the price of the blouse. When I said the blouse was our personal property, the male owner became enraged and screaming and came close to attempting to push me - I guess taking umbrage with a customer's request to actually receive back their personal clothing that his company had damaged. Realizing that her co-owner was acting in a self-defeating manner, the woman owner (who I agree with Brian B. is usually very sweet) pushed her husband out the front door and locked it so he could not come back inside. While she spoke in a more reasonable tone of voice, she basically said she couldn't give us back the blouse at that time and we needed to come back later. The bottom line here is that absent some remarkable about-face and mea culpa, we will not use this dry cleaner anymore. It doesn't matter if you are a regular customer or not - things will go wrong at some point and that is when you will see the true colors of this establishment. read more

The service is not friendly, but I was willing to put up with that because it's so close to me. However, rude and bad cleaning is not something I'll willing to keep paying for. read more

He said "yes, I can't be on the phone that long with you--I had to ring in a credit card. I can't be on the phone." I have now been to this cleaners three times. They have a posted opening time of 7 AM in their front window, but on no occassion have they opened at 7 AM. In my experience, the open after 7:10 AM to 7:15 AM. My whole purpose for picking this cleaners was their hours. This is the most conveniently located dry cleaner for me on the hill, however, it has the absolute worst customer service, pricing, and actual expertise. I asked to get measured for a tuxedo for a wedding while dropping off shirts for cleaning. They said it would be $5, despite it being a service most shops like this offer for free to customers. I said ok, because "convenience." I hand over the list of measurements needed, and after being unable to find measuring tape for about 5 minutes, the woman begins measuring me. About 3/4 into the list she says she doesn't know how to measure some of the needed measurements. I say ok and that I will to somewhere else, but thank you. I leave my shirts. Fast forward to a week later and now they are refusing to give me back my shirts unless I pay for their incomplete measuring service, which they had agreed to remove from my charge originally. The gentlemen working the counter even told me to call the cops if I wanted my shirts back. This is about the principle and this business care nothing for their customers. read more

I went in here today to have a simple bustle put on my wedding dress. i had a relatively pleasant experience while in the store and was quoted $70.00 for the bustle and steaming of the wedding dress and veil. i left feeling very happy only to get a call a few minutes later...i was told that i was erroneously charged $28.00 for an evening gown instead of $120.00 for a wedding gown! Mind you, I bought my dress off the rack at Macy's - it is not even considered a wedding gown and it only cost $100.00!! I told her that this was ridiculous...she lowered the price to 60. i politely asked her if she could just do the bustle and the other alterations and she told me that it was all or nothing!! either i payed the full price to steam and do the bustle or they wouldn't do it at all!! i promptly turned around and got my dress from the store only to be treated with the cold shoulder. she wouldn't even put my dress back in the bag and only helped me struggle to put it back myself when i asked her to help...long story short, if you come here for anything wedding related - prepare to get the standard "because you are a bride" 500% markup read more

I have never had a worse dry cleaning experience. I brought a brand new dress here to be pressed for an event (tags still on). Because it was delicate and white, the owner insisted that they needed to send it out which was fine with me. When I returned to pick it up (on the day of the event), she charged $15 which seemed high for simple pressing. However, I was in a hurry and just paid it. After walking out of the store, I quickly noticed a giant burn mark on the dress. I immediately returned (within 5 minutes of walking out) but the owner became incredibly rude - she refused to take any responsibility and even to return my $15. My $200 dress was ruined with a burn mark and she just yelled at me about how it wasn't her fault. I originally asked for some of the value of the dress which she completely refused. Eventually I asked her to just refund my $15 which she even refused. I will never return and would HIGHLY encourage you to look elsewhere. There are two great places further up on 7th St. I made the stupid mistake of trying this place because it was slightly closer to my apartment - lesson learned. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. read more

Amazing quality service!! I have been coming to Metro Cleaners for years, but I am repeatedly surprised by the outstanding and attentive service that the proprietors provide. In addition to run-of-the-mill dry-cleaning, I have also come to Metro Cleaners for many tailoring needs. As a fuss-budget myself, I tend to fret over details and have been very disappointed at other locations. But here, the quality is always excellent! For some of my more complicated tailoring needs (formal dresses, etc), I've found Mrs. Lee to be imaginative as well as meticulous. She is an artist! She has also time and again been willing to complete emergency tailoring on very short notice. She has come through for me again this afternoon, so it means I'll be ready to go for a out-of-town dinner meeting this evening. I am hugely grateful for having Metro Cleaners in my neighborhood, but even if they weren't nearby, I'd still schlep a good long distance for their services.
