I just got done eating the best chicken & waffle... I mean all the way down to the bone . That seasoning on that chicken was thunder... I bit into it and the juicy from the meat squirt in side ya mouth... and the skin fried just perfect... you know i had to dip my chicken in the syrup omg it was orgasmic moment for myself.. the sirup was on point... the whole meal its self was experience.... i dont think Gladys Knight has anything on metro . The most comfortable and honestly the most loving staff. Our waitress Alexis was wonderful... but truly the best part was how caring the staff seemed to be about one another. They all complimented one another well with work and they all were keeping the energy upbeat while working. On top of that when they said goodnight to a waitress that was headed out they all said goodbye to that staff member. This felt more like a hometown dinner with good vibes... and less like it was just dinner and done. We are coming back to this spot! read more

My fiance and I were looking for a new breakfast place to try. I am not much of a breakfast person, but my fiance is. When we arrived, the Diner was packed to the brim with customers, and it's pretty easy to see why after you've had their food. I ordered the Breakfast Pizza, and my fiance ordered the Chicken & Waffles. Together, along with our coffees, we spent around $30-$35 dollars. However, their Breakfast Pizza was one of the best I've had. The breading they use is really good (biscuit, I believe) and the hollondaise sauce they put on it really helps bring out the full flavor to the pizza. The portion sizes for us were very generous as well. I could have easily shared my pizza with someone, and ended up taking half of it home with me. read more

Was referred to Metro by a fellow hotel guest while staying downtown this weekend. He said he had made the short drive down everyday while he was in town, so I thought we'd give it a try. Well worth it! Reasonable 15-20 min wait on a busy Sunday morning. The specials were a fried chicken and waffle Benedict (couldn't pass that up) and strawberry cream cheese stuffed crepes (my daughter jumped on that). The food and service here were outstanding. Will definitely go back to try some other plates on the menu. Side note: I watched a fellow patron throw down a huge plate of fried chicken, a huge plate of waffles, and two plates of hashbrowns with mushrooms. I had an amazing meal here and loved there somewhat retro style menu. Unfortunately I'm giving this place 2 stars because of what I witnessed during the course of service. I ordered a crab cake Benny advised by my waitress. This was very yummers and warranted a proper gobble. It had formed skin and couldn't melt the lowest form of cheese which isn't even cheese known as "American cheese". I'm patriotic but American cheese is plastic and never enters my body knowingly. I'm mortified to send things back and honestly don't partake in the behavior. However a member of my party righteously sent that "shit show" back. And when I say "shit show" I honestly mean it in the nicest possible way. When it came back it was perfect grits. And what was originally advertised. After all this still not the reason for the two star. Are we ready for why this perfectly charming place gets a two star. Mind you I loved my food even though my fries were cold. It was the waitress who was nice that earned the two two star. She visited the table twice to ask "are the grits hot enough for you now." It came across very snarky. And to check twice was odd..like she didn't believe us. After all we returned to another server because we couldn't locate her. It very much seemed that she had no idea they came out of the fridge And no one heated them up. We can all heat garbage in a microwave. It's grits we aren't expecting much. The concern is not "hot enough" the concern was did you kill the bacteria in the food. To reference the first part of this review. My eggs where perfect. Grown in a chickens body and not Exposed to our dirty planet until cracked in a pan and cooked to perfection. The concern was .....do you understand food.? If you forgot to heat the grits and fries. The very first Metro Diner still at its original location in the San Marco/Lakewood section of Jacksonville. A bit cramped, always crowded (especially on weekends) but always delicious. On my most recent trip, I let my daughter do all the ordering and she ordered the Breakfast Burger and a Caesar Salad for us to split. The salad was just okay but the grilled chicken that came with it were amazing. Note to self get more grilled chicken and skip the Caesar salad. The burger was AMAZING. I have been to most of the local burger spots and this burger blew most of them out of the water. It had hash brown, egg, crispy bacon and ....burger. Just plain delicious. read more

Okay, if I lived in the Jax area, I would eat at one of this local chain's restaurants nearly every morning. We Yelp!ed and found this one, and I believe it might be the original location. It's a tiny, TRULY local spot. Like, there are houses right beside it. It's in the middle of a neighborhood! Which can make for some interesting parking. That aside, everything here was top notch. The service, the food, you can't go wrong here. We liked this location so much, we actually looked on Yelp! For another one on our way out of town and tried it as well. We were in Jacksonville and wanted to check out the Metro Diner that was featured on the TV Show Diners Drive-Ins & Dives. We arrived on a Saturday about a hour before closing and waited on 20 minutes. We were seated in the back dinning room(watch your step on the carpet by the kitchen, you can feel the grease on the bottom of your shoes). Our waiter Marcos was the top notch, he helped us order items that were not on the menu. Since I don't get to Jacksonville that often, I wanted to maximize my eating experience. With Marcos' help, I order the Chicken & Waffle Eggs Benedict with Hash Browns and a side of Biscuits and Gravy. The W ordered a half order of the Yo Hala on the Square (with Apples, the special of the day) for us to share and the Pittsburgh Steak Salad. From Hash Browns, Biscuits and Gravy, Waffle, Chicken, Fries -- everything was incredible but the Yo Hala, that was out of this World. It's not something that I would normally order, and I probably wouldn't order it separately -- but I have never tasted anything like it. There is limited parking so if you see a spot, park there. The food was good, but the waitress ruined the experience. My friend and I are in town for Rockville, and we needed breakfast before going out there. I saw this place on yelp and decided to try it out. The Oscar omelette was pretty good, but there was very little crab in it and not enough Hollandaise sauce. Their chicken and waffles was just ok, but definitely not nearly as good as Nashville hot chicken. The best part about the meal were the cheesy grits. Granted, the grits themselves were extremely bland and needed a lot of salt and pepper. They put the perfect amount of cheese to truly make them cheesy. The waitress was nice, but I felt extremely rushed. I understand it was a busy Saturday morning, but we were sitting at the bar area. I don't think I was taking an overly long time, but felt a lot of pressure to try and eat my food as fast as I could. She almost took away the plate before I was done with it, and she brought out our checks before asking if there was anything else we wanted. When I told her I would like a second orange juice, she seemed annoyed that she had to go and modify the check... which she would've had to anyways since she put my friend and I on a single check (since she was in such a rush to get us out, she didn't even ask if we wanted them together or separate). I came here on my Annual TV Foodie Road Trip. It had been featured in FoodNetworks DDD for the Meatloaf and gravy. I love a good meatloaf. So of course that's what I ordered. Unfortunately this was the worst meatloaf I ever tasted and the gravy was a congealed mush. We also ordered a salad which was crisp and fresh. The place was very busy with locals. Another Tv show was even there filming in the back room since it's so beloved. This must have been a fluke. So if you do try Metro I just suggest you stay away from the Meatloaf. We phoned in a takeout order at the Metro Diner on Lockwood road in Sarasota. My wife ordered the fried chicken and waffle dinner. When I got home we discovered the order was incomplete - there was no powdered sugar on her waffle, no strawberry butter and no syrup and no the sweet and spicy sauce. Since we had no syrup in the house, we simply tossed out the waffle. I ordered the fried chicken dinner, it was also incomplete - no brown gravy for the mashed potatoes and no sweet and spicy sauce for the chicken. Several of the pieces of chicken were so undercooked I didn't think they were safe to eat. It's clear there is no attention to detail or concern for the customer at the Metro Diner. Probably the best breakfast I've had this year. I enjoyed the Belgian waffles loaded with blueberries, strawberries and bananas and a side of sausage. Of course I topped it off with warm syrup and boy oh boy!! I could literally eat this same thing tomorrow morning and enjoy it just as much. The waffle was perfect, fruit was fantastic and the service was excellent. I will be back without question because everything on the menu looks amazing. If you're in the area METRO DINER is a must. This is a great little diner on San Jose. I watered a French dip sandwich that was made with hoagie roll and a great tasting Aus Ju sauce. I had served it with french fries, Which made for a great lunch meal. The service was great and the employees appeared to be very happy. The seating was a little tight and the room set up is a little unusual. They have two separate areas for seating and they also have outside seating. I've been burnt by over-hyped brunch spots featured on tv shows in the past, but Metro Diner was a pleasant surprise! The service is friendly and efficient, but not super attentive. The prices are fair and the portions are large. I found the crab cake benedict to be excellent. The cakes were low on filler and seasoned nicely, the eggs were properly cooked, and the home fries were cooked crispy per my request. The chicken and waffles is a meal for two. It's a half chicken and a full waffle. I'm a total snob when it comes to fried chicken and am a devoted disciple of Gus' in Memphis. That being said, the fried chicken here is very good. The batter is well seasoned, but it doesn't stick to the meat very well. I loved the waffle with strawberry butter, but the "house special dipping sauce" is the single most ridiculous table-side service I've ever seen in a restaurant. Our server walked up to the table, put an empty sauce cup on the table, picked up the hot sauce from the table, splashed it in the cup, filled it with maple syrup, and said, "trust me, it's good." I'm not making this up! The entertainment value alone is worth ordering this dish again. We wouldn't hesitate to head back here and explore the massive menu a little bit more. read more

Been a real long time since our last visit to one of the best restaurants in Jacksonville. We moved a ways away so it's been this long to making another visit. Actually they are close to my doctor so Maddy suggested a return. Any way we used to go there when they had the old mugs of coffee cups with the advertising on them. Which we own two of. They are chipped and comfortable to have a cup of brew out of so they are staying with us. Even if Metro wanted to buy them back they can't have them. Decided for the first time ever to order Thanksgiving Dinner from a restaurant. Ordered Thanksgiving Dinner that feeds 4 people from the the Metro Diner: Ordered pecan pie and got 4 pieces of pumpkin pie (very disappointed as we had our mouth set for pecan pie for dessert which is my husband's favorite). Then the paper bag that had '4 dinner rolls' written on the outside of the bag contained 2 dinner rolls. I will say that everything tasted very good. Just wish they would have gotten our order correct. 11-28-20: Update: I was asked to contact Ed at the diner, called him and as he promised he "made good on this".
