We called ahead to see if we could make a reservation and while they don't take reservations, the gentleman I spoke to asked how many of us there were and what time we were planning on arriving. When we arrived, we were seated right away. His name is Craig and it turns out he has part ownership. Our waitress Kayla C. was also incredibly kind and knew what she was doing. Our food came out at a reasonable time and that's when we began putting ourselves into a food coma. We all ordered different things but it all was amazing! The atmosphere is quaint and very inviting. If you are ever in Jacksonville, you HAVE to try this place. It has some of the best breakfast that I have ever had. I have been here three times and I have yet to be disappointed. Two out of the three times that I have been here, I have gotten the chicken and waffles. This dish definitely blew it out of the water for me. The fried chicken is so crispy and juicy, and it is probably the best fried chicken that I have ever had. The waffles are super fluffy and they compliment the fried chicken perfectly. The chicken and waffles come with strawberry butter, and that may sound strange, but it is absolutely delicious. It also comes with syrup mixed with Louisiana hot sauce on the side, which is perfect if you want more of a savory flavor. But for the absolute perfect bite, I recommend taking a bite of chicken, a bite of waffle, and then slather the strawberry butter on top. It literally tastes like heaven in your mouth. Also, if you decide to just go as a party of one, I recommend only getting a half order, or else you most likely will not be able to finish it. If you are dining with someone else, you can try and tackle the full order together. Metro diner is definitely a great place to eat, and you need to try it if you haven't already done so. I have been going there for years, and it has progressively gotten worse and worse. Today was pretty much the last straw. Went there with my daughter, she ordered chicken and waffles, the chicken was so overcooked there was only dry, almost powdered meat under the dried up, burnt skin. I ordered the philly cheesesteak, and for the second time, the barely there meat and cheese, was only second worse to the overcooked, hard bun. Took a few bites, got disgusted and paid my check and left. On the way out, I thought I should let someone know that this is the worst its ever been, and told our waitress, and her reply to me was, "Well, we are shorthanded, and we have a line out the door", and she just walked away, as if it was no big deal. I now wish I hadnt tipped her because I felt it wasnt her fault the food was so bad, but obviously, either she is getting tired of all the complaints, or just doesnt care. I truly wish Guy Fieri would revisit this place, I am sure he would take back all the good things he said about the place. read more

Came here Saturday afternoon for brunch with my boyfriend and I was blown away! Everything was fresh and well presented. The food looks as good as it tastes. My colleague and I decided to try this place on a whim and we definitely got lucky because turns out this place was featured in Diners, Drives-ins, and Drives! Everything I've had from here has been really good. This includes Benedict, corn beef hash, omelets, and pound cake French toast. One menu item absolutely stands out however. Drum roooollll... CHICKEN & WAFFLES OMG They give you an entire fried half chicken and a couple Belgian waffles. It's a miracle the servers can even carry it without the mountain of chicken tumbling off the plate! The chicken is fried to golden crispy perfection and its seasoned just right. On the side there is this syrup hot sauce concoction that dances perfectly with the salty savory of the chicken and berry butter melted atop the waffles.. For a breakfast that is really great, try the 'Yo Hala on the Square'. A thick slice of challah bread stuffed with a mixture of bananas, brown sugar, cream cheese, and hazelnut syrup, then prepared like French toast. Delicious! Must stop have when visiting or driving by Jacksonville. The service was wonderful! The manager felt that it was unacceptable for how long we waited for our food, which didn't seem too long for how busy they were so they covered the check. We went here this morning around 9am. We were able to get a table inside without a wait & got fast service. I ordered one of the specials & when the food came out, my burger was still raw in the middle. I'm one of those people who hate sending things back, but I mentioned it to the server & he assured me it wasn't a problem to have another dish made. After a few minutes, the manager came over & apologized. They were able to get my replace dish out quickly & it was really good. The manager & the waiter both apologized several times & they comped our entire meal. I've never had a restaurant be so nice about a problem. We will definitely be back! read more

Metro Diner continues to offer great varieties of food, affordable prices and good customer service. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash and my boyfriend got the Juevos Rancheros. We also ordered a half order of Yo Hala on the Square to share. Everything was delicious! The Yo Hala on the Square is a signature item features on DDD and it always delivers. The one issue with this location is that they have discontinued their call ahead service. You used to be able to put your name on a list when you were 10-15 minutes away to shorten your wait time. With this option no longer available, coming in with a large party like we did can be a challenge. read more

I could eat breakfast any time of day. Lucky for us, Metro has a wide, delicious variety. Collectively my friends, family & I have tried 10 different dishes. The greatest hits are the omlets, home fries, and biscuits with gravy. Some other things to consider are the breakfast pizza (we prefer no hollendaise) and the pound cake French toast (very sweet). This last visit, my friend and I sat at the counter. The cooks and our server made for good company. I enjoyed watching them make thousand island dressing and gravy. This is my go to restaurant whenever I come home to Duuuuvvvvalllll. I found this "Jewel" when I lived in Jacksonville. I've only been to the Hendricks location. I always get the same thing, the Charleston Shrimp and grits. The food is always dee-licious. The staff is attentive and awesome!!! I'm looking forward to trying the locations in the Virginia area. Here's my Charleston style shrimp and grits dinner from Metro Diner off Hendrix in Jax. Was going to order the fried chicken, but went for the shrimp and grits instead. I thought they were really good. The great cakes had awesome consistency with a nice little crunchy on the outside of each of them. I thought the gravy could be a little thicker with a touch more salt. But, that's just my preference. Maybe some of the stock reduced down from the shrimp cooking? Just needed more of that umph.
