Special - penne pasta with short rib

Good but pricier than it should be for the size of the dishes. The cheese plate came with one tiny piece of hard cheese and one tiny piece of soft cheese. We added the charcuterie which was 4 small pieces of salami and 4 small pieces of prosciutto. The mixed grill dish was 2 tiny cubes of tuna and 2 shrimp. Everything was good but such tiny portions that you had to order sooo many dishes to fill up. Drinks were good. Staff were nice and explained all the dishes to us. Cool ambiance and vibe with trendy art. Wouldn't be upset to come back but wouldn't go out of my way either.

I'm only giving this place 2 stars because of the serving sizes. The food was excellent but I think $22 for 3 scallops is ridiculous. We ordered the soup and crab cakes to start out, both were good but also micro sized (crab cakes). I was so hungry that I asked the waiter for bread which I had to pay for lol! The drinks were awesome, you get what you pay for in that regard. Just don't go here on an empty stomach you'll leave feeling like you were taken advantage of. I hate to be so harsh but I didn't eat much all that day and was ready to eat a hearty meal and got soup and and barely a mouthful of scallops and crab cakes. For $198 including drinks.

The MOST FANTASTIC small plates place in the OBX, or really anywhere for that matter!! Mark and Matt and their Team are the amazing!!! By the way never walk away without having the Soup!! Kills it every single time!! WOW!

I would bathe in the asparagus soup while sipping the duck confit from a straw. The service, the food, it's all quality. This is the place.

Neither one was worth the money. Everything is expensive anymore when you eat out, I don't mind paying if the food is good. The soup had no signs of fish or seafood in either serving. It tasted like a spicy vegetable soup. It was good but no fish and not worth $9. The Quinoa bowl was average, tomatoes were spongy and tasteless and 3-4 pearl mozzarella balls. How is that $19? Very disappointing. I gave 1 star for our wine and our waitress Emily did an awesome job. She was prompt and took care of all the tables in the dining room. She did a fantastic job ensuring we had everything we needed. It wasn't her fault for the food. We are both locals and wanted a girl lunch, and appreciate the challenges restaurants face. Trio is always busy So not sure why today's food was so poor. I still bought wine at the store, again great shop.

I also tried to order a French 1605, and while they didn't end up having all the ingredients, the bartender was still completely game to make something off-menu and clearly knew their spirits well. Always appreciate a bartender who actually understands balance and flavor instead of just reading recipes off a card. We also ordered the deviled quail eggs, bulgogi lettuce wraps, and potstickers. Everything was good, though our other table ended up being ready way faster than expected, so we had to take most of it to go. One small PSA: the menu calls them "jumbo" quail eggs, but quail eggs are tiny creatures of nature to begin with, so don't walk in expecting chicken egg-sized deviled eggs.

Let me start with this: Pane E Vino has the unique distinction of being the first restaurant in thirty-four years to have a waitress who made me cry. I don't think this was her intention, but I wasn't expecting to get shamed (roasted? Aggressively judged?) for my choice of wine. Listen, I have my reasons. I could only have one glass of wine, and I wanted it to be one I liked. But when I ordered a glass of their Pinot grigio, the waitress made a disgusted face and was pretty forceful in suggesting something else. She said the Pinot grigio was not good. Scrunched her face and shook her head. I stammered for a bit and reluctantly agreed to a different wine. When I tried it, it was not what I wanted or liked, and I was embarrassed to have been called out so aggressively and wasted my one glass, so I went to go cry in their restroom (which was very clean, +1.) When I returned, a glass of the Pinot grigio was at my seat because my husband is an angel who can read the room. Our server did not ask how I liked the replacement, but didn't charge for the forced glass, so eh. Okay. I reset my mood in preparation to receive our steak, octopus, and mussels. This seems to be a place where there ARE right and wrong orders. The chef asked how we wanted our steak and we said medium rare. Personally, I like more medium, my husband prefers rare. We compromise like pros. The chef seemed to prefer the "rare" temp so our steak came out nearly raw. My husband said it was the perfect steak, so if this was his review, you may be hearing a different story. But friends, I'll attach a picture. There is no land where that steak was cooked to the temp we asked for. I ate three of the shrimp from the top, which were fine (my husband said "a little chewy.") The octopus was good, but certainly a sharing portion, so not very much. Don't count on it to be a meal, but that's implied. The mussels were well flavored, but quite crunchy. We agreed that they were not rinsed out properly or something-- they had a ton of grit and some significant little pearl-like chunks in them. At this point we were just wanting to leave, so we didn't mention it. In summary, I cried, my husband liked the steak, and we went straight from here to somewhere else to get me some dinner.

The restaurant was busy for a Saturday evening, but we were able to get a reservation earlier that afternoon with no problem. Our party shared a combination of happy hour appetizers and full dinner entrees. The dishes were innovative and unique, and tasted amazing. The mussels in jalapeño cream were particularly delicious and something I want to return for. After dinner, we opted to take the pumpkin cheesecake home. We were pleasantly surprised to find when we arrived home that they had packed a bag of ice to keep the dessert cold on the drive home. Truly just next level service and amazing attention to detail.
