It wasn't what I requested. I asked for just a little trim, but he cut off almost all of my hair and left me nearly bald. I also asked for a fade, but he refused to do it. When I mentioned my beard, he said no because he wanted to take his break instead of finishing the service. To be fair, he wasn't rude or disrespectful during the appointment. Why do some barbers give you what THEY want, and not what YOU want? Is it ego? This was supposed to be a five minute tiny trim not the Sistine Chapel. I'd grown out my goatee so it could start to be clipped into a point. I was very clear that I wanted as little as possible trimmed off, a tiny bit, and showed him with my fingers, and leave the rest (sides, lips, etc. full). I said I had a fat face and wanted the beard to cover as much flesh as possible. I was very clear and deliberate. He clearly said he understood. What he proudly did was trim my goatee very thin and very small all around and clip the hair so short there could be no point. I have to start a long process of growing the whole thing out and trying to shape it again! When I handed him my VISA he looked stunned, as if I'd dropped out of another century, and said they only accepted cash, but pointed to an ATM in the corner that charged me another $2.25. Call me dumb for not creating a scene, but it was too late. For several months I'll look like a balloon with a cotton ball glued to it. read more

I'm going to have to call this place out. If I pay $45 for a haircut, I expect professional work, especially if it's in SF. Instead, I got some amateur clipper work that's uneven and just straight-up butchered. Why would you cut straight through the corner of my forehead and make a floating patch of hair on both sides (red arrow)? If your hands are that unsteady, you should not be cutting hair. Even worse if your steady hand makes a cut like that. The blue arrow shows the line where the barber basically shaved off my sideburns with a bald clipper. No amount of blending can fix that. Lastly, I explicitly asked for a length so that I didn't have to comb my hair. When he finished, he combed it and said, "Looks good, just have to keep product in it." It's a shame that I wasted my Saturday afternoon at this place and got ripped off with this terrible haircut. Also, one star for ambience. Very user friendly. Easy online scheduling/appointment system. I was able to schedule my haircut appointment with Rafael from Germany. The shop itself was very visually appeasing. I arrived early, but didn't have to wait too long before being attended to by Rafael. This may be a bit biased, but having a barber that pays attention, takes his time to cut your hair to your liking, while having the visual concept of what you want your hair to look like, is light years better than getting my haircut from the military base that pushes customers through like clockwork. I've been to many different barbershops, but this one by far was the best experience. Everything from the initial greeting and sitting down on the chair, to the warm towel treatment at the end that leaves you smelling like roses. When I moved from SD to SF, I decided I would never ever check out a barbershop that costs more than 25$. After two tries at various locations, I was very dissatisfied with the amount of time that those barbers spent on my hair. I just wanted a nice skin fade, and oh my the fades were awful. I decided to ball out and go to this barber shop for 40$ and boy was I satisfied. Not only did Rafael take his time with the fade making sure there were no jagged edges but the technique he used made the fade even all around starting from the side to the back taper. (Some barbers struggle with this). Not only that but he was also able to pick out the flaws that the past barber seemed to have made on my hair. Rafael did an amazing job fixing the mess I had from Geary Salon and honestly you live in the city so you get what you pay for. If you're looking for just a simple 1 on the sides then don't spend 40$. But if you're all about that nice fade on the sides and great lineups, Metropolitan Barber Shop is the way to go. These guys are pro and chill! I guess I better eat more at home because I'm coming back for that 40$ skin fade! read more

I travel a lot for work and have been to over 100 barbers Coast to Coast over the last 12 years. Finding a good consistent barber is a rare thing. A month ago I stumbled across the Metropolitan Barber Shop and had zero expectations. The shop is the perfection embodiment of what I expect in a barber shop. Clean, good atmosphere, plenty of class and character. I found myself in Luis, the owner (unbeknownst to be me at the time), 's chair. The conversation was causal and friendly. I got a hair cut and a hot shave w a straight razor. Little did he know I pay attention to every little thing and am quietly very judgmental to what a barber is doing. His attention to detail was impeccable. He seems to have spent many years mastering his craft. I just left Luis's shop for the 2nd time in a month equally as pleased my second time around. 2 stars for ambiance and vibe. haircut was the legit so bad I wanted to cry. I'm not kidding. 50$ with tip (haircut was $40) and no, I'm not going to withhold tip because I'm not an asshole. Guy just didn't listen. Showed him pic of desired look. Showed him up close pic of part, messed up both to the point of them being dramatically different that photo. My hard part was CURVED. What? No one said to do that and that is not in pic. No one has ever done that before. It looks ridiculous. You know it's bad when your lyft driver is like, what happened to you hair? ugh. I've been going here probably for the past two years now and my opinion about this barber shop hasn't changes since the beginning. I always go to Elijah because he's the first person I went to for a fade at this barbershop. Before going to Metropolitan Barbershop, I was going around other barbers in the city to see who can do a nice, tight fade (for my liking). I tried Fellows, Peoples, Attention to Barber, and more. All of them are great and sometimes I still go to them when needed, but Elijah's fades are sooo clean; he knows what he's doing. He's usually available from Thursday-Saturday, so book early! I've also had cuts from the other barbers in the shop, and their work is equally as great. All of these men are talented and need more recognition. Pricing is also good as well, considering that it's in Downtown San Francisco. Just make sure you bring cash because they do not accept cards. read more

Chicago has some awesome barber talent so I was worried about finding something comparable in SF. Being in Nob Hill and hoping to find something close by was starting to look grim as another shop I'd given a try in the area just wasn't up to par and had bad customer service. Tried it out for the first time. Ended up being matched with a guy who seemed pretty novice although he had good intentions. I think his name was Jesus. Wouldn't recommend unless you like being directive. He basically asked every 20 seconds what I wanted. I am used to giving broad directions and the barber to do their job without much more guidance. That's what I expect when I pay $40. I've had some people clean up my beard in the distant past, and it was ok but never seemed worth it. Then I roll in here with a 10a reservation. At 10a they offer me a bourbon, and Louis does a great job cleaning up a scraggly ass beard without a mistake, and gets it all done in ~12 minutes. We were in SF for the week and my brother just needed a spot to get a haircut for that mop that was on his head. I yelped around for a place near the SF Marriott Marquis. I was blown away that most haircuts were at $40-45 at a barbershop. In NYC, the average price is around $20. In any case, we gave them a quick ring about 30 min beforehand and they were able to squeeze us in. They offered us both drinks when we first got in. Jesus gave my brother a haircut, it was pretty good and styled well. We were able to get in and out of there pretty quickly which was great. It's nice to find a barbershop where the guys are true to their craft! Smooth with the clippers, hot shave cream, great conversation, sharp with the scissors, and all in a man cave style atmosphere! Walked in and was offered a drink, beer, whiskey, tequila, or water! Right from the start, my kinda shop! Was handed a frosty cold Pacifico and then I sat down in the chair and let Rafael go to work on the rustled curly locks and the chia pet I was growing on my face. After a cool hour in the chair talking basketball, football, and the dismal capabilities of the Seattle Mariners, I emerged with expertly trimmed locks and a chiseled beard cut that looks amazing! The true test, I got back to my room and my girl went.... WOW!!! And her eyes lit up with what surely were some fantastical thoughts! I am lucky to have found Metropolitan when I moved to SF. It's the first barbershop I've tried since moving here, and it will be my go-to as long as I'm in the area. I've been cut twice by Luis since. Guys know how hard it is to find a good barbershop. It's always a pick 1 (sometimes 2) of 3: 1. Good cut 2. Friendly barber 3. Easy reservations & staying on schedule At other barbershops, I've had a chill barber that cut well but was always 30+ min past reservation. I've also had an on schedule barber that cut well, but was a dick. These guys hit the trifecta. The cuts are on point, all the guys are friendly as hell, and you can make reservations online. 1. Good cut I walk out of the shop feeling fresh to death, nothing much more to say. I always get a tight fade on the sides with a combover on the top, and I can confidently say Luis does the best version for my head. Other patrons I have seen tend to get similar cuts, either a taper or fade with a combover or mohawk top. I'm sure they can do general mens cuts just as well, but know that this is a "San Jose style" fade barbershop. Doesn't make much sense to pay $35+ when you don't need a super sick fade, brah. 2. Friendly barber Talking to all the barbers is like talking to your friends. Luis did a great job hiring barbers that are legitimately chill. We have talked about what bars are crackin, American Psycho, California hairstyles, girls, MMA fights, defending yourself against SF crackheads, etc. Manly shit. 3. Easy reservations & staying on schedule I have made all my reservations online through their website. Quick and painless. The front desk even has a monitor with barber timeslots. So there's never a question of what's going on, unlike other barber shops where you have to constantly make the mental note of who was there before you. They offer beer or whiskey while you wait, which is dope! I've never had to wait more than 10 min past my appointment time, just enough to kill a beer. Manly magazines like Maxim, Car & Driver, and Playboy are laying around, as well as cool decor on the walls to look at. read more
