tl;dr for such a well-renowned local bakery, the pizza crusts are shocking subpar on otherwise delicious pies Unless they've been living under a rock, any Center City Philadelphian would probably recognize Metropolitan Bakery and its freshly baked bread and pastries. The brand was established in 1993 by Wendy Smith Born and James Barrett, two restauranteurs who met by way of White Dog Cafe. Now, MB boasts locations in University City, Rittenhouse, and Reading Terminal, and plenty of Philly restaurant stalwarts showcase MB products on their menus. I've been fond of MB's baked goods for years, so their pizza-forward venture, aptly named Metropolitan Pizza, has been on my shortlist of Rittenhouse restaurants for some time now. The cafe is adjacent to MB's Rittenhouse outpost, both just a half-block South of the Square. You can't miss the recognizable gold logo in the window. The inside is simultaneously comfortable and modern. Abundant, warm-hued filament bulbs, each nestled in their own mason jar, hang throughout the space. The subway-tiled kitchen is complete with a wrap-around counter and industrial pizza oven. Wood slats loop under the kitchen counter, past the pastry and deli displays, joining with the back wall; the remaining whitewashed walls remain tastefully unadorned. The only table in the customer space is monopolized by staff sorting coffee beans and performing other ho-hum tasks. Quirkly instrumental tunes resonate around the restaurant. My partner and I recently visited to try one of their pizzas. Upon entering, a staff member point us toward a raised desk with a stack of printed menus. Notably, Metropolitan Pizza currently only offers takeout -- and, frustratingly, its online ordering systems wouldn't allow the option of in-store pick up (only delivery, with long wait times and plenty of associated fees). Since we were only a few blocks away, we resigned to ordering in person and then twiddling our thumbs in hungry anticipation. The pizzaiolo tossed the dough and decked it with topping before our eyes, and soon handed us a moderately heavy pizza box. We opted for a large (16") pizza, 1/2 Pepperoni and 1/2 Sausage. Immediately, I was struck by the stunning aroma of freshly melted cheeses and baked meats. But as I picked up my first slice, I watched in horror as half of its topping immediately slid off the crust. Really, the toppings had no chance: in the middle of the pie, the crust was paper thin. However, it became progressively thicker towards the edges, eventually reaching Papa John's-esque proportions. And, like Papa John's, the cornicone was bland in the texture and flavor departments. This was a stark contrast to the clearly premium toppings. The pepperoni half-pie generously sported two salami varieties, each offering equal parts spice and flavor. The rich taste was delicious enough that I could overlook the floppiness of the pepperoni slices. On the other hand, regarding the sausage half, we were fond of the added red onion but found the pie to be fennel-forward almost to a fault and stingier on meat. The pizza ran us just about $25, and it proved to be a fair size to split. While the ordering system rubbed me the wrong way, I nonetheless was glad that Metropolitan Pizza accommodated our request for 2 pizza varieties on our single pie. Between them, the pepperoni was a clear winner -- but even its outstanding flavor profile couldn't make up for the poorly executed crust. I'm a big fan of Metropolitan Bakery, so I was looking forward to trying the pizza here. Unfortunately, I left disappointed. I had the sausage pizza, with fennel & red onion. The sausages were good, although I wished there were a few more. The problem with the pizza is the crust. It tastes fine, but even with the edges slightly crisp the bottom of the pizza is not at all crisp. Even though the slices are small, you can't hold up a slice with one hand and eat it, without the crust going completely limp and the slice falling apart. My co-worker's pizza was the same way. With so many places to get pizza, Metropolitan has got to do better to get my repeat business. My meal ended with a slice of chocolate cake. The same cake you can get next door at the bakery. It's very rich and very good, but I can just grab this at the bakery for take out without coming into the cafe. Service was friendly but a bit slow as there was no communication between the person making pizza and the person slicing the cake. I definitely owe my friend for showing me this hidden gem. I love metropolitan bakery but I have a feeling I will love this addition even more! There is a hearty selection of toasts, pizzas and breakfast all day options for lunch and dinner. Best of all, you order and pay at the counter and they bring the food to the table. Makes it a quick and easy spot for anytime of day. My thoughts on what we ate ( shared amongst the 4 of us) 1) Avocado toast - Devine. Love their rosemary-olive oil sourdough bread. However, the affitional baked goods I bought were inedibly dry -- lemon cake, millet muffin. Caught clerk putting in an item I hadn't ordered -- even when business was slow, trouble paying attention. Used to find their desserts craveable, now just dry and tasteless. Even a cup if tea with them couldn't help them. The bread seemed denser than in years past. Something has changed in that kitchen. Upside, if you miss getting to the bakery during their limited hours, their cafe next door sells several of their leftover baked goods. I've always loved getting breakfast at Metropolitan Cafe (especially with their morning granola bowl), and was excited to try their new pizza for the first time for lunch today! Was shocked to open yelp and see it having such poor reviews. I've always found service great at this place, especially for not being a sit down restaurant! This was always a cafe where the workers were friendly and willing to give advice on what to order and information about what's inside certain items. There are always plenty of items I enjoy here, and had a hard time choosing one to try. I asked the people working here for their advice for something vegetarian, and they recommended the asparagus and farm fresh egg pizza. It comes with truffle cheese and is so delicious! I wasn't craving pizza when I came here, but was so happy with what I ordered, and was glad I got to try something new! I also ordered a cappuccino. Metropolitan gets their coffee beans from Green Street, and I always love the taste of their coffee (and I can be a bit of a coffee snob). I noticed they now have homemade ice cream at metropolitan, which I will have to try during my next visit! I hate to say it, but the avocado toast was not as mind-blowing as usual (my past reviews are on the Metropolitan Bakery page - they've split the listing). The coffee is still excellent and I love the vibe, but the toast was burnt first and after one bite I had to give it back. They remade it, but it was still really hard to eat. I picked my hotel around being near her for breakfast, as I've been doing on my last few Philly visits. :) But the avocado toast was a disappointment. Also they don't open til 11 am these days on weekdays, which was a surprise - lots of us were lined up outside on a hot day. But I would come again for the coffee and hopefully the other dishes here. I have been here twice and I really like it. We first came in the fall/winter and had take out. I just remember how good the candied lemon and fig pizza was super fun and tasty. The mushroom with taleggio is so dang fantastic. Like cream of mushroom soup with lots of mushrooms. The have a lot of non pizza stuff in the case that I have not gotten, but looks so great, like savory pastry type things. They also have seasonal options; we got a half pizza (yeah, you can just buy half!) with summer veggies and farm eggs. I really liked how the yolk was on every slice. Overall great experience from The moment my girlfriend and I walked in the door. We had just bought a soup to go from next door and came in to grab a bite. When my girlfriend requested to have her soup warmed up, they instead just gave her a warm bowl of the same soup. Oh, and the pizza was on a different PLANET!!! We got the farm egg pizza and the chef whipped up something that I had never seen before. Pizza with delicious bacon and egg with just the right amount of runni-ness. Pizza was cooked to perfection. I opened it up and there was very little turkey and no bacon. I took it back up to the counter and told them. The quality of the service has really gone down hill. I used to enjoy this little spot so much before the pizza oven moved in and the regular staff moved out. On my recent visit, it was difficult to place my order since not one staff member at the counter asked me anything close to "May I help you?" I got a "wassup" and "how's it going" a couple of times from a young staff that acted like they were to cool to work there. Someone should explain to them how to present themselves professionally and ASK the customer if they would like something. Favorite pizza in Philadelphia! Taking the place of honor from Pizzeria Vetri. Please ignore bad reviews about service. We came in at closing and they still made two pizzas, and even apologized for the wait. It looks like most of the bad reviews are people bitter that it's changed from what it used to be, but the staff could not have been more friendly or professional, and the food is absolutely incredible. They have lots of options besides pizza as well- pot pie that looked delicious, a salad, frittata, and amazing pastries from the bakery next door. I love their pizza here, however I have issue with the way the place operates. On weekends when it gets really crowded, tables are left messy and I often have to ask staff to remove dirty dishes. It's also not clear whether you are supposed to bus your own table when you dine in. I had a strange experience tonight which I should have mentioned to them but it felt awkward. Ordered a pizza and salad, and watched the guy making pizza do it with bare hands, no gloves. Not only was he incredibly slow, he really seemed like he did not want to be there. At one point I thought he might be high. He touched all the toppings with his bare hands which I wouldn't have minded entirely if his hands were clean and he was only handling food, however he went next door to get more ingredients, came back touching the door handles, and went back to making the pizza. After what was the slowest pizza making I watched (there were no other orders) he brought my food, then took out the trash and bussed dirty dishes out of the tub. Once all of that was done he then played with his phone. I did not see him wash his hands after touching all these germy surfaces and I felt uneasy about him prepping and handling food with those bare hands. My husband and I used to eat at the Metropolitan Cafe once or twice a week, outside or inside. When the conversion to the Pizza & Cafe took place, we were disappointed that the inside space was reduced significantly to make room for the pizza oven and counter. We ate outside until the weather turned bad, but the food just wasn't the same. Last week we succumbed to try the pizza inside and it was a disaster. The tomato sauce on the pizza was burned, not overcooked or 'prepared intentionally to be dark in color by a special technique' according to the gentleman that prepared the pizza. One taste told us that it was burned and would upset our stomachs if we choked it down. We asked for a salad to replace it. They were accommodating and exchanged the lousy pizza for a salad that was tasteless. We ate what we could and left. Not that it will matter to them but with their conversion to a Pizza & Cafe, they've lost 2 loyal customers. read more
