This is the closest place to me that has Mexican food that seems close to authentic at a quality beyond any of the bigger chains. The chips are thick and the salsa has fresh flavors that speak to much fresher preparation. I got the mexicali burrito for my main meal and was very happy with the ingredients and portions. Nachos are also my favorite of the appetizers. The deep fried ice cream is my favorite dessert here, but the dessert burrito was also very satisfying. The environment is bright and vibrant and the booths are large enough for a small party. The music was at a suitable volume and the staff are wonderful. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area to go to! I can't believe I haven't written a review yet. This is the best Mexican food that you can find in the area by far. It's not the most authentic taste I've ever had, but it certainly meets my expectations when I'm craving enchiladas. I love that there are a ton of options for vegetarians that are flavorful and protein-packed. The servings are very generous as well! I have never had a problem with the service here. It's also certainly not too loud, so you can eat while having conversations with a large party. Looking forward to coming back soon! read more

I'm not a fan of Mexican food but I happen to love this place! There are things on the menu for me to order and the food is very good. Staff is always friendly and attentive. First, my appetizer was served with plastic in it. No one came over to acknowledge it or apologize. I actually saw a woman shake her head no and refuse to come over to our table. Next, the chicken in my salad was so over cooked it could not even be picked up with a fork. When I asked to speak to the manager, our server told me one moment, and brought the woman who originally refused to come to our table. She began telling me our server said she didn't trust us, and that I was acting crazy, and there was nothing she could do about the situation. Never in my life have I been treated like this in a public establishment. Would give 0 stars if possible. Las Cocinas is right up the street. It is delicious and they appreciate your business. Best decent Mexican food in the area but has been lack-luster since COVID started. We have been going here for a long time; always a favorite. Service and quality are having some speed-bumps on the last couple takeouts. 1. Fresh guac had no salt / lime; not a huge issues and easily fixed. Once fixed it was back to good level. 2. Missing wraps, chips or other. Last 3 orders at least 1 "misc" item was either missing or laughable short ie: "3 small wraps" for fajitas for 2 or a 1/2 bag of chips when ordering fresh guac. I just order extra extra wraps, chips and salsa to make sure something gets packed to a minimal level now. 3. Meat is sometime great; sometimes overcooked, bland and dry; seems very spotty at best. Overall will still use when looking to fill the craving; but no longer a weekly must go. read more

Updated: Dropped review from 5 stars to 4. Our take out experience recently was a disaster. We had to wait over 30 min beyond our scheduled pickup time because all the staff were confused about what we and others for take out had ordered. We got drinks to go, even paying extra for the premium tequila, and ended up with coconut margaritas that we didn't order (staff didn't label them so got them mixed up). Food was cold when we got home. It was disappointing particularly since we were returning after a stellar first visit (sit down). My recommendation is to skip takeout altogether. Parking in the back is not quite adequate on a busy day (especially since it's partially reserved for the library when it's open) but the grocery store is right there so still have ample parking to choose from. The bartender during our first visit was so friendly and so nice. Our favorite thing about the place was how laid back it was. The food was classic and comforting. Ask for hot sauce! read more

My rating reflects the poor service and unbearable entertainment during our most recent visit to Mexicali on New Year's Day evening, not the food. In all the times we've patronized Mexicali over the years, this was the first time we received really bad service, and were unnerved by the atmosphere. We were promptly seated in a booth after our 5 p.m. arrival. A handful of people were eating or drinking at the bar, and the dining room had a couple of tables filled with customers. We noted that the dining room itself was manned by several servers, so lack of staff and bustling business could not possibly be the reason for the subpar service we received. Our very blasé server (I will not mention her name) didn't appear at our table with menus for several minutes. It took another several minutes for our simple drinks (a beer and an iced tea) to be delivered to us. When they did arrive, I was disappointed to see that my iced tea glass was only about two-thirds full with warmish tea and a couple of melting ice cubes (the tea must have just been brewed), and was garnished with a tiny limp piece of lemon which rendered only a tiny amount of juice. My companion's Modelo Negro was fine. For the most part, our food was very good. But, again, timing was off. We weren't sure if it was the fault of our server or the kitchen expeditor. The flour tortillas for our fajitas, though they were in small warmers, were brought to us way too early (3 small tortillas to each order. We wished we'd had one more tortilla a piece). About 10 minutes later, while they were rapidly cooling off, our sides and condiments were brought out. We waited another 15 minutes for our sizzling platters of fajitas. My pork and my companion's chicken fajitas were very good: of ample size, well-seasoned, well-charred, and screaming hot. The sides were good as well. No complaints here. From the time of our arrival until we finished our dinners, we were plagued by an awful musician. This so-called guitarist/singer spent the majority of his time tuning his guitar and doing sound checks, which was extremely annoying. When he did finally find the courage to perform, his cover song selections were questionable and badly executed. Did anyone actually audition this dude? The guy also had the audacity to put out a small white bucket reading "Tips 4 Bait." What the heck?! He should stick to fishing and hang up his guitar and microphone. I actually felt a little bad for him as no one applauded any of his renditions. Note to Mexicali management: PLEASE stick to piped-in traditional music or hire a mariachi band when you feel live music is necessary. read more

The bacon chicken avocado sandwich was fantastic just six months ago with a jack piece of chicken breast complemented by the other ingredients. Main Street Spencer, MA Horrible! I'm Jewish and I make better Mexican. Ordered takeout only once in all fairness but the 4 or 5 things we tried were tasteless and just plain wrong! Looks cute and cozy from outside on Main St but we will never go there again. The best part wa the free nacho chips. Parking for pickup was sparse. Workers were uninvolved and inattentive. It was one of the worst experiences. This place has really gone downhill. Our waitress, named Paloma, was not attentive. We had no place settings at our table for about 30 minutes, so we had to grab our own off another table, which was crazy because the place was pretty much dead (it was 2pm on a Thursday). They charged me for a side of sour cream when it clearly stated on the menu that my meal included sour cream. When I questioned the waitress about this, she told me I was wrong. I told her to look at the menu, and she finally fixed my check. The place was dirty. Flies were everywhere. And to top it off, a member of our party had a $5 coupon that they would not honor. We asked to talk to the manager, and Paloma said that she was sorry, but the manager was not in. We said we could call him, and she walked away. Then she came back to say that she called the manager and they would still not take it, which is so hard to believe. We didn't really care about the $5, but it was the principle of the whole thing! She couldn't be bothered by us. After all our troubles, I was at least hoping the food was good, but it was not. Save yourself some time and money and just skip this place. read more

I've usually had fantastic experiences. This past time was not good. I picked up my order and got home, to realize I was given one wrong item, so I went back and returned it, no big deal. Thankfully I live close. Then I got home again, and I had received the most burnt dry fish tacos with no sauce, pico, or cabbage. I was fairly upset since I paid almost $20 for these, and my sister convinced me to call. The manager was fine over the phone, apologized and offered to give me a gift certificate and gave me the sauces and items I was missing. Upon arrival, there was a man with a massive order and they messed up his too. I was given the sauces and dismissed. It was my THIRD time returning to the restaurant. My tacos al pastor were dry, chewy, and the tortilla like leather. No rice with my beans either. Highly recommend you travel to Mexicali In Ware. Never have had a bad meal or service there, super efficient and friendly staff. And the margaritas and food are excellent! It is sad that two locations in same chain are so radically different. It's kind of hit or miss for me, I love burritos and tacos and the like which is why I come here now and again since it's the closest. The food is so so, if you're dying for a burrito it's good. If you're really starving it's good. But there are other places with the same kind of food that sits better in the stomach. Beyond the food, I usually plan to wait a bit to get my takeout at this point. I've had to wait over 45 minutes once (more than when they told me to come). I've also had my takeout bag sitting there another time and no one to check me out for 15 minutes, so that time my food was kinda cold. Historically I have run into long pickup times for take out orders. Being proactive, I called at 4:57 to place an order for 5:45 pickup, and verified with the employee twice that this was not a problem. At 5:45, I picked up soggy, cold food that had obviously been sitting for some time. I asked to have the order redone. The manager came out and rudely stated that no restaurant would ever take an order that far ahead. I explained that I asked if it was a problem when I placed the order, and he then yelled at me twice that now HE has a problem. First, NEVER speak to a customer that way, apologize for the inconvenience to the person who is paying your salary. Second, educate your staff appropriately. Third, I spent two days with gastrointestinal problems so you've permanently lost a customer and as many more that I can tell. read more

Came here for Paint Nite. They had a nice separate room downstairs with a private bathroom for the event. There were a decent amount of servers and they were great. There was chips and salsa on our tables already. I also ordered two appetizers: Fiesta Sampler and Taquito bites (with chicken). They were both tasty. Not sure the Sampler was worth it. The chips were plentiful but took a lot of unneccessary space on the plate considering they're free. The quesidillas were also mediocre. Delicious wings though. Wish I ordered just that! The taquito bites were the best. Loved that it came with guacamole. Crispy deep fried tortillas with tender chicken inside. I've been to Mexicali several times and it's always an enjoyable experience. Carlos is almost always our waiter and he's the sweetest. Dinner consisted of: Tortilla soup, Mexicali soup, Tex-Mex Chimichanga, and Puerco Avocado. After being seated you're served a huge basket of fresh tortilla chips and homemade salsa. Their salsa and guacamole is ALWAYS made fresh and the guac is made right in front of you. #bestguacEVER The only thing we're not fans of is the amount of cheese that's put on the food and beans. I scoop mine off and put it on the bfs roll up he makes with his Puerco Adovado. Next time we'll tell them to ease up a bit. I, also, love their "Mexican" rice. It's flavorful but not salty. The restaurant has a bar section with 4 huge flat screens to enjoy the games. Definitely a plus! The drinks are priced right and perfectly balanced to enjoy the flavors of all ingredients (not too watery and not too boozy) Will always be one of my top three in the area. read more

While the food is good, there is one thing that is consistent: the service. Sometimes we can tell that the waitstaff simply doesn't want to be there, or they are being robotic in their motions like they want to say 'I will just do this to get through the day so I can get home and go drinking with my friends' This time around, due to the pandemic, we requested curbside delivery. The site asks to let them know when we arrive so they can bring out the food right away. We do that, the lady who answered said it will be out in five minutes. Twenty minutes later my wife masks up and walks in to see a half dozen to-go bags lined up, along with ours which was sitting on a chair. Get the food to our car (we are so hungry now we decided to eat in the supermarket parking lot adjacent to the Mexicali parking lot) and the food was lukewarm, like it had been sitting for 20 minutes. Couple this with three other vehicles who came in after us who were also waiting for their food, and I wonder where the waitstaff's head is located, as she obviously has continued the tradition of poor service this establishment is known for. Food is great. Frequented this location since they opened. However i noticed a few years ago one of the main waitresses always looks so angry and she mixed up our orders with another table with barely an apology. She fixed it but she seemed almost mad at us for the mix up. Customer service is a huge part of the job and this lady is just miserable. I'm trying to celebrate and it's difficult when you get a deeply unhappy waitress. Discovered the Ware location and that is where I go now due to the amazing waitresses. read more
