I've been to Mexicali 4 times so far. The good news: ambiance is great, staff is always attentive, seating/dining area always clean, restrooms clean. Ceviche tastes fresh, guacamole is fresh, salsa is pretty good (I like a watery salsa), chips pretty good, mixed drinks (Paloma and margaritas) are good enough, chicken tortilla soup is filling. None of this is so good that I would recommend driving 15 minutes + out of your way for, but decent enough. The downside: most of the food is lackluster. Tamales: dry (thank God for the watery salsa); rice and beans: dry, with beans slightly on the flavorless and burnt side; the burritos: vegetables are fresh, but meat always tastes dry (chicken) or slightly flavorless (beef), (thankfully most burritos served with a cheese sauce as well, but the lettuce and tomatoes that are served with it are always cheap and flavorless); enchiladas: one-note, the salty sauce and cheese covers up other flavors ( if there even are any); tacos: forgettable and one-note in flavor (needed guacamole, salsa and hot sauce to provide any depth of flavor); street corn: a complete joke, and covered with a mayonnaise-like condiment containing Sazon. For entertainment, order the street corn! Ask them to split it in two so that it can be for two people. Depending on who the chef or waitress is this could turn into an interesting conversation (about whether corn can be split in two vertically, seriously- the waitress left our table and returned asking if we meant split a cob of corn vertically or horizontally). She then stared in wonderment at us when i said "we just want 2 portions"; i felt like i was making an Abott and Costello bit, when she replied "sooooo, two orders split in half or what do you mean?". I mean one ear of corn cut in half so one person can have one half and another person can have one half. She nodded in amazement, saying that it would be really hard to cut an ear of corn in half but maybe if the chef has a good knife, maybe this amazing half corn could happen. Then it arrives, yes split horizontally in two, she looked very proud. Now, what's supposed to make street corn street corn is that it's grilled and seasoned, then covered in a Mexican crema and cotija cheese topping with lime and onions. Mexicali boils their corn in unsalted water, doesn't usually cut it in half or season it afterwards, leaves the corn probably for the whole shift so that each of the kernels gets really shriveled and dry like an old raisin, then coats it with mayonnaise and sprinkles Sazon on it. It's an entertaining experience, if nothing else. Definitely have an adult beverage- at least those will have flavor and hopefully make the whole experience fun/worthwhile! read more

Food: The tortilla chips was fine, but salsa is on the watery side but it tastes fine. You get 3 tacos with any of the choices and you can add the topping as you go. I got the Mexico City tacos which had tender steak with sweetness of the mango and sauce. I wish the rice and beans were separate as the rice became soggy sitting with the beans and I think the beans were a little bit burnt. Service: Server was nice and attentive. Went to Mexicali last night, 11/15/24. The food was excellent! Our server was very attentive and the employees and manager said hello and greeted us with smiles. I do wish there was a seperate room for groups. The group of women last night were so loud that you could hear their conversation. My husband I had to repeat ourselves to talk to each other. The more the alcohol was served, the louder the group of women got. This is the only time this has happened so far, but this problem should be brought to attention of the manager. read more

Right out of the gate, I'm a fan! A huge fan actually! First few experiences were takeout. Everything was Uber fresh and basically just deconstructed for you to make your own magic. Then I dined in and everything changed. The level of attentiveness and friendliness of the staff makes you feel like you are in straight VIP seating. Over the top! Incredible! The food is phenomenal. Mexicali is one of my favorite restaurants. This is the first time at the Webster location. I usually eat at the Westborough restaurant. Fortunately the Webster Mexicali location was open with indoor and outdoor seating. Eating out during the pandemic is not as fun, but the food was tasty. We had a mid-afternoon lunch and started with a jalapeño margarita and a Grande margarita. For lunch we ordered a Street Burrito with carnitas, a combo plate with a chicken enchilada and mole sauce , pork tamale and beef burrito. Everything was delicious, especially the mole sauce. Mexicali definitely enforced limited seating with about 8 tables occupied inside the restaurant. The wait staff was a bit slow, but overall enjoyed our lunch. read more

Average food (at best) ... but what can one expect from a town like Webster where rolling up the windows and locking the doors before driving through town are mandatory? I probably wouldn't eat here again based on the food I had. (the Tamales Mole' seriously tasted like drywall with joint compound on top). Tacos and Fajitas were so-so. The cuts of meat were kind of tough. This is good 'drunk' food ... so if you are looking for a place to have 3 or 4 Margaritas and then eat ... from a social standpoint, it's alright. We were surprised how nice the décor was inside. It looks a LOT classier and bigger than it does on the outside. The 3 stars are for the décor alone. However, I will say that it was freezing cold INSIDE the restaurant (January). They could stand to turn on the heat. We ate with jackets on and most of us had cold noses during the meal, which made things a bit uncomfortable. Warmth is crucial inside a restaurant in winter time. If you are fan of places like Chili's, Olive Garden and TGIFriday's ... the food here will probably be to your liking. If you are someone who likes more of a freshly prepared food ... this might not be for you. I guess it's more of a social spot than a foodie spot. This was our first visit. We started off with an appetizer of Chilichanga, not having had it before, but it sounded interesting. It was a good choice. Very delicious with the chicken in it. I ordered a Taco Salad and my wife ordered soup with chicken after asking the waitress whether it was spicy. She said it was not. Well, it was. My wife said the avocado was the best part. Really glad this little gem has stayed open during the pandemic. I did a take out order today, and it was very good. I had an order of loaded beef nachos, an order of beef fajitas and churro for dessert. Nice big portions, lots of sour cream, guacamole and salsa, all homemade. The steak for the fajitas was very tasty and tender, with plenty of grilled veggies to add in. All nicely packaged for keeping hot till I got home. Love this place. The food is usually decent and always comes out quick. We came here for dinner on a Friday and we're seared pretty quickly as well as chips and salsa being delivered to the table. The salsa and chips are great and we recommend the guac. Our only issue was the service, besides the initial drink the waitress brought she never offered a refill and we went most of the dinner without drinks. We were planning on ordering margaritas as well but due to the waitress never stopping by we never had a chance to put that order in before finishing dinner. We planned on getting the deep fried cheesecake as it is pretty good but this time we passed as we were waiting for 20+ minutes without anyone stopping by and we didn't want to be there for much longer. I sent this via private email, but haven't received a response... Hello David Brambila, Thank you to you and your staff for a tasty meal last night at Mexicali, Natick. HOWEVER, when I presented my debit card to Kristine (?) at the bar to pay for our dinner, she could not return it to me because she could not find it. I was the director of operations for a major food truck for years and understand that while people make mistakes, sometimes recompense is necessary. I also appreciated it when a patron contacted me directly vs. airing his/her grievance via social media. I paid full price for my meal and tipped generously. I was able to do this because I memorized my debit card number and was able to provide it to the manager. I stopped by Wellesley Bank this morning to report the incident. They recommended that I cancel the card due to the unusual circumstances. This is very inconvenient for me because I pay online for all of my expenses including life insurance via Penn Mutual, car insurance, medical insurance, AT&T, two missionary support payments, IRS and MassDOR monthly installments, and many more. I now must wait for my new debit card to arrive and have several auto-payments due this week , so risk penalties and cancellations on accounts - I am very troubled and anxious about this circumstance. Why did your staff not at least request my phone number in the event that they recovered the card or that a patron may have returned it? While the staff was friendly, (except I had to request Kristine's attention twice because she was talking with a gentleman waiter at the other end of the bar), and the food was good, I expected the customer service to be as good...thoughts? I don't know if this place is under new management or what, but it is no longer a place of choice for me at this point. The restaurant has gone down hill over the past 5 years that I've gone. The food is all microwaved and shows little to no pride or effort. The tables are all scraped up, no coverings on the back of many seats, seats themselves are torn and the bar typically has gnats flying around. This all has NOTHING to do with COVID-19, this particular location has been going poorly beforehand. Aside from some of the waitstaff/bartenders, Rachel being my favorite and who keeps me coming back (I only order drinks now, no food, because that stuff is just ) even though I find the restaurant itself to be in less than stellar condition and poorly run. So it's a low budget Mexican restaurant like a 100 others in the area. Food is fine but nothing special. The problem is just outrageously bad customer service. I bought a Groupon and used it on my last visit, paid for the meal, then realized they never applied my Groupon. Instead of doing the right thing and handing me $20 back the manager said that all he could do is give me a hand written and signed coupon for my next visit. Insane but I took it and left. Then today I go back and use my hand written and signed $20 coupon and the manager,who himself had created and signed it, did everything he could to refuse to accept it. Just amazingly outrageous! I'm in there fighting with him for 15 minutes just to honor the credit the he personally signed and guaranteed. He just wanted to rob me of $20, and that Groupon cost $12. So he's being as terrible as you possibly can be to a customer over what's essentially an $8 discount. Remember this was there screw up from the beginning. Takeout orders are a complete mess. Every time I picK up, the orders are very wrong. Missing protein from burrito bowls, wrong rice, missing rice, missing sides. I called and asked to speak to a manager, manager didn't want to address and said he would call me back. No call back to date. Very disappointed. You need to hire more efficient front end staff that can properly take orders and check orders for accuracy.
