My husband is a truck driver and has eaten at this place many many times. The food is always great. The service was a little hit and miss. If this place is truly closed, we would love to purchase the grill from you. He hasnt stopped talking about that grill since the first time he visited years ago. We were headed from Moab to Monument Valley and knew we would have few dining options at our final destination, so we scoped out this place in the speck of a town called Mexican Hat. It. Is. Worth. The. Visit. I promise, you've never been anywhere quite like this. First, the Swinging Steak is very easy to miss - trees obscure half the sign. Once you're there, it's, well, let's say unpretentious. The restaurant is outdoors, a space formed by two wings of the adjoining hotel and the open air kitchen. Simple plastic chairs and tables are scattered around the space - welcoming, clean and uncrowded. Your eyes will be drawn immediately to the swinging grill; that's not an expression, it's just a description of what you'll see: a grill about 3 by 6 feet, swinging over a deep steel pan of flaming wood. The cook, "JD," resplendent in jeans, cowboy hat and boots, will be tossing big slabs of beef on the grill, while nudging the grill with a huge fork. The menu is limited - you pick from one of about five cuts - and they all come with a side of salad and a big scoop of beans. The steaks were perfectly cooked, and "paired" with a bottle of Polygamy Porter, the meal hit the spot. We did not at all begrudge the 18-percent tip added automatically. Go. read more

Arrived in Mexican Hat and decided to give Swingin Steak a try. Walked over from Hat Rock Inn and was surprised they didn't open till 6. Menu was very simple, choose your steak or a chicken breast and it comes with dressed simple salad, pinto beans, and apiece of Texas toast. I ordered the flat iron and my Dad ordered the sirloin, both medium rare. They we both good steaks, not best ever, but definitely solid especially given dinner options in Mexican Hat. Toast, salad and beans were fine, nothing spectacular and the beans could have been warmer. It was nice to go somewhere and have several beer options. I liked open air seating but with open air comes a different standard of clean imo. 18% tip add didn't bug me, in fact it saved me money. Prices were a tad high on steak but come on, you're in the middle of nowhere, would have been twice that at a Disney Resort. read more

Our service was okay for the meal but we wanted to have a beer while we were finishing and no on came around to serve us even though it was obvious we weren't done yet. I'm a meh on this one. Gross. I spent too much time in the Valley of the Gods taking sunset pics so here I am. This is one of the worst places we've stayed on my summer long road trip. Tiny room. Smells beyond bad. Medicinal mixed with death. The AC barely works. I have it set to 68 and there is Luke warm air blowing out. I'd leave but I have no where else to go and can't car camp. There are bugs everywhere in this room. I've killed 4 large creatures and I'm pretty sure I'm sleeping on a bag of bed bugs. This mattress is crap and makes odd creaking noises with its metal springs. Yes this thing is so old it has metal springs. I'm not even getting under the sheets. A - too damn hot and the ac sucks. B- bed bugs. C- the sheets are gross. I wouldn't let a dog sleep here. If I wasn't so exhausted I'd demand my money back. This place charged me nearly 100 dollars. It's maybe worth 20. Or 5 bucks an hour which ever comes first. And the WiFi is a joke. I keep getting rejected from logging in. When I finally got a connection I could do nothing. Remember dial up? Yeah? That's blazing fast compared to this crap. Avoid staying here at all costs. read more

This was one of the few places that was open in Mexican Hat when my husband and I finished up our horseback ride through Monument Valley, so we decided to give it a try. This restaurant is quaint and the menu is small but we were really hungry so we each ordered the hamburger. They don't have buns or cheese, it's literally a hamburger patty. We enjoyed our beers outside and watched as our burgers were cooked on the infamous swinging grill. The burgers were served with beans, salad, and a piece of toast. Everything was good! To say the least there is nothing fancy about the joint, the bar server/waitress doesn't want to make any small talk and doesn't have the inclination to humor you with all of your culinary questions. Man! There is something about this place! We are giving this place five stars for its unbelievable southwestern atmosphere and great great food.... And this is coming from 100% pure city folk :D We stayed at the motel just one night and even though, the accommodations were modest, it was clean and we couldn't help feeling like we were in a western movie (where the heck is my horse??), especially with all of John Wayne's pictures and western memorabilia. But the greatest part of our stay was the dinner prepared on a swinging grill - slowly grilled hamburger with Texan toasted garlic bread, baked beans and salad. Yummy, yummy :) And two XX beers following made the meal complete. The smell of the dry air and grilling meat just got us and now every time someone grills we reminisce about our vacation and our stay at this motel. We will definitely go back on our next trip. Please note, that this is NOT a 5-star hotel. It's very standard with no fancy amenities, just the western ambiance, but that's the point, isn't it? read more

This place was kind of SUPER awesome. The steak was not only amazing, but cooked by a real cowboy. He wasn't very friendly, but what cowboy is. He grilled everything on a swinging grill, over a pit fire and it was simply mouth watering goodness. The beef was thick and perfectly cooked. This place was amazing and I can't imagine it is easy to find, as it in is a town that is so small, you can literally run right through it in a matter on minutes. Overall a solid meal in a town with limited options. I am on the fence with this being between a 3 or 4 star but given the choices in town I would recommend The Swingin Steak. There are not a lot of options on the menu but the food was cooked to order...we sat and watched it swinging on the grill. They appeared to be slightly short staffed, however, both servers were very friendly and made sure we had what we needed throughout the meal. Solid ranch style dinner: steak, beans, and salad with a vinaigrette. Since the flat iron cut was above average would image the sirloin and ribeye would also be good. The meal's simple but the beef excellent. And after five days in the area from Bluff, UT to Monument Valley, and around, no restaurant with good food has low prices. This place is true to its name: there's a grill that it on a swing to cook the steak. We ordered medium rare, but it came out a little rare. They were very friendly and got it to medium rare which had great flavor. It's a very simple dish that comes with salad and and beans. The ribeye steak here was amazing. I've eaten at Wolfgang Puck's Cut in the Beverly Hills Hotel, Boa Steakhouse in Santa Monica, and in various steak houses in Chicago. The ribeye here was the same and possibly BETTER. If you're in or near Mexican Hat, you must go. read more

While passing through town for just the night, we decided to try Swingin Steaks because of its 4 star review for dinner. We arrived at the joint at around 8:45 excited for some great food and to see the "swinging steaks". We were promptly seated and decided upon our dinner fairly quickly since the menu is only 5 items. We ordered a hamburger, a flat iron steak, chicken breast, and an extra slice of their Texas toast. We finally got our food at around 10:15 and we expecting some BQQ perfection. Each plate consisted of a slice of Texas roast, the meat, a side salad, and some beans. Everything was EXTREMELY bland. I tasted no salt whatsoever on anything and had to add quite a bit. The vinaigrette from the salad began mixing with the watery juice from the beans as they were on the same plate. The steak was completely rare even though we ordered it medium. The chicken was tough. The hamburger was just the patty no buns or anything else. The most delicious item on our plates was the Texas toast which was crunchy and flavorful. The service was really what topped of this experience. The two waters working here were also the cashiers and busboys and looked thoroughly miserable to be working here. The ONE chef cooked only three orders at a time so with this making the process go slowly, the swinging grill made everything much slower as well. When you are given the check, which really shows the outrageous prices for such mediocre food, a tiny square of brownie is given to each person at the table. We later discovered these brownies to be nothing more than cut up Little Debbie treats. read more
