Mexican Spice is undoubtedly one of the best places to get authentic Mexican food in a casual setting. I've been going with my family at least once a week literally since they have opened this location and have always had an amazing experience. The ambiance is great, with lots of cute decorations, they're always trying new things, and the people could not be friendlier. Everything on the menu is great but my personal favorite is the chicken tinga quesadilla, which has the perfect amount of filling and is super easy to eat. All of the salsas are awesome too, and are actually spicy. My only complaint is that they are not open 24 hours a day, because that is how often I want to eat it. read more

Finally a great Mexican spot in Chatham! We got the taco trio 1 carne asada,1 chicken tinga, and 1 carnitas all very yummy. The Mexican bowl was also delish, note slightly spicy w the poblanos in it. Chips and guac were also very fresh and super tasty. We will be back. read more

I've only had the burritos but they are full of meat with little filler like rice. I really like the pork burrito best. Ask for extra guacamole. The only disappointment is that they automatically add a tip. 20% for the person who makes the order and the person who hands over the bag when you walk in. Great Cooks, poor chef, overly priced.' I've ordered a few times. Consistently very good taste, but poor presentation, dish construction and business leadership. Tonight's example; I ordered (4) tacos [chicken, shrimp, beef and pork] as well as a side of some chips and guacamole.l, and soup. The tacos were the meh. Each had ample portion of protein, and they were each individually delicious. The problem was that there was absolutely no attention paid to presentation, and worse, texture. Each taco was protein filling with some onion and cilantro. Again, the proteins were plentiful, moist and flavorful, but no texture or depth of flavor from other fillings that offered crunch/acid/color existed. All of them were "mushy", save the onion. It seems to me that small changes, such as reducing protein and adding some ingredients to increase color and texture, would immensely add to appeal, without raising food costs, and so, are easily attainable. The guacamole was good, the chips were a bit stale, but it's been raining like mad, and humidity is high. so a pass there is deserved. read more

I decided to try this Mexican place because they claimed to be authentic and also because I like to support Mexican businesses, unfortunately i ended up totally disappointed. I placed my order inside and I was told that my food and drinks were going to be brought to my table outside. My kids and I were waiting and waiting but nobody came to bring us anything, not even our drinks. My kids were really hungry. After 30 minutes, I went inside to see if my food was ready. I told a lady who was behind the counter that I'd been waiting for 30 mins. She seemed to be very annoyed and went and grabbed my food and drinks. She apologized but I could tell she was mad as if it was my fault. I grabbed my food and brought it outside but the food was COLD!!!!! I ordered tacos. The chicken tings needed more seasoning. My kids ate them just because they were very hungry and we didn't have time to go anywhere else to eat. I felt discriminated against. read more

Had high hopes based on previous reviews but the food was uninspiring. The crane asada and carnitas tacos both suffered from a general lack of flavor. Had they been served with a piece of lime, I think the acidity would have helped a lot. The empanadas were better. Very crispy. The churros were ok. The tres leches cake had absorbed so much of the milk it was more of a pudding. And not sweet enough. read more

Beware on delivery orders. When the food is actually cooked, it's great. Today I was delivered flautas that looked and felt like they'd been dipped in a cold vat of oil. It has potential but the food is flat -- and seems to be pre-prepared, so not as fresh as I'd expect. I've tried it several times thinking I just mis-ordered, but it's just blah. Given that I don't even like spicy food, I can only imagine how blah you'd find it if you like spice. Rationale for the 4-star rating: Food gets 5 stars! Service, regrettably is only a 3, for now. I believe they are committed to improving the takeout service, but sadly it has been disappointing the past two weeks. But I believe they can work out the kinks in their system. I'm cutting them some slack because they just moved locations from nearby Madison. Three complaints: 1) We placed the order before 5:00pm and asked that the order be ready to be picked up by 6:50pm, 7:00pm at the latest. Got there at 7:00pm and still ended up waiting 20 minutes. Not sure how or why that happens, but I hope they can figure that out. Soon. 2) Was very specific that the trio of carnitas tacos was not to have any onions due to a food allergy. The girl repeated the entire order back so I know she heard it and understood it. What happened? The carnitas had onions. This is bad. The diner had to swap her dinner with another person in our party. 3) Ordered 4 dishes, but got only 3 salsas. I know it sounds trivial, but seriously, it's not that hard to do simple Quality Control when the food gets placed into the bag. Should be an easy fix. I'm all for a juicy quesadilla but the thing was dripping all over for me. 12 dollars for cheese and chicken on a tortilla; NO SIDES. by the time i took it home the thing was practically a soup. You're better off hitting up an authentic mexican place or at least something less commercialized and more focused on aesthetic than food quality and reviews from half baked washed up food companies that they wear proudly on the wall. The service was a 6 out of 10. Maybe one more point because of the fact that the water bottles were TWO DOLLARS EACH but the lady was kind enough to only charge me a dollar for it after i made a comment about how insane that was. I mean two dollars!? What is this? What are we in? A water shortage? If thats the case, show me to the bathroom i'm better off drinking out of the toilet like the cheep dog i am. Forget authentic mexican spot. You'll get more bang for your buck getting a quesadilla at APPLEBEES than this place. Granted: they did ask if i wanted sides I THINK... but don't ask. We had Mexican Spice cater an engagement party and they were fantastic! The Taco Truck and traveling Cantina were a huge hit. The tacos and quesadillas were excellent! Toppings were fresh and fantastic. Margaritas were outstanding - very unique and very tasty. And, the fancy churros were a perfect ending. The servers were fun, friendly and helpful. I work in Summit, NJ and kept hearing of this great Mexican spot close by but never went until yesterday. Those who know me know I LOVE shrimp tacos and when i saw them on the menu i knew what my next move was. I ordered at the counter (which was quick to prepare) payed and shortly concluded that these were the BEST SHRIMP TACOS I've had in a long time. The staff was fantastic and super nice. We did a last minute curbside pick up and they were quick and so kind. Their chicken and cheese quesadilla was fantastic! Great flavor.

I have to say, i just tried the trio of tacos for the first time for lunch today and wow. In my opinion, since moving to NJ from NYC almost 2 years ago I think this was the closest meal that resembles amazing nyc cuisine that I ever had. So so so good and I am thrilled with this place. I will be ordering all the time. I got chicken tinga and pork tacos with the amazing crema sauce on the side. Please anyone considering ordering from here - do it!
